Caribbean Travel Thread

Recommended Posts

Since I vacation exclusively at beaches I figured I'd start a general thread for Caribbean travel.

First up... Nassau.  I'm headed down there in september.  I'm timid to stay at Atlantis even though it seems to be the only good casino.  What are hospitality recommendations for a early 30's couple with no kids?  Some background info on activities and dining around the hotel area would be nice if you have some insight.

Thanks!!

Jamaica. We really like the Iberostar Rose (or something like that). Great food. We never left the property so I cant speak much for the rest of the island. Just amazing service all around.

We looked hard at jamaica but there was a travel advisory issued right when we were looking to book something. Consolation prize is Nassau in early september.

Nassau and Jamaica?

Heres what I’d look at

St. John, BVI, Providenciales, Isla Mujeres, Anguilla, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, St. Barth’s, Exuma, Eleuthera, St. Kitts & Nevis.   Start with those.  I probably missed a couple.

Eleuthera is incredible. Went last summer. Very small. I’ve been to 90% of the islands and this is by far my favorite. Especially if you are wanting to unplug and relax. You will most likely be the only people on the beach for miles.

Look up French leave resort and the cove.

Not true...Baha Mar is a much better casino...of course I might be biased since I worked on the project for 5 years.

As for other Islands, I really like St. Lucia, Martinique, and Dominica

Grand Cayman is my favorite so far. Nice beaches, solid diving, things to do, and no 3rd world country feel like T&C and others have felt. Stay at Rum Point and avoid the cruise ships and high traffic areas of 7 Mike Beach. We’re renting a house either fall break or Christmas break again this year.

Just curious, where else have you been?  Grand Cayman is one of my least favorite Caribbean Islands.  I found it to be lacking a distinct culture and way too expensive.

3rd world may be a little strong, but not all that far off when comparing it to GC. We stayed in a house near Chalk Sound for part of the week and then bailed on that for Amanyara and the Gansevoort the rest of the week. It’s the only place we’ve been that we pretty well agreed after a couple of days we would skip making a return trip. The resorts were nice, but we typically try and stay off resort. The gated communities on Sapodilla Bay were nice though. It was also a couple of years ago around the time they had several home invasions occur.

GC, Turks, several stops through the Bahamas and DR at this point. We are going back to GC this year and then looking at Exuma or St Lucia for another trip this fall. The culture part doesn’t bother me as I’m looking for beaches, diving, fishing, and off resorts places to stay with limited people. Turks was nice on resort, but that’s not what we’re after.

Depends on where you stay, your definition of sanitized, and what you’re looking for. We rented a house in Rum Point away from the main tourist areas and ate the local places there and on the East End. We made one trip over to the Seven Mile Beach area for the kids to go to the turtle center and that was it. When we go to the Caribbean we look for some place where we can get a house away from the resort areas on the beach, it be relatively safe and accessible, and there are other things to do.

I was more talking about the country itself. It has some uh, odd, natives.

No judgement or anything, you like it then that's all good. Just stood out because it's just not a place that gets much love usually, mostly known for being a place to stash Russian mob money with no questions asked than a place to vacation.

If you want some houses away from it all, I'd recommend looking just north of Staniel Cay in the Exumas towards Compass Cay. One or two on each island in a lot of cases.

Nicaragua. Maybe you’re a badass traveler who would just stroll the streets on Managua right now, but I’ll pass until this subsides.

I don't think they'd have any problems on the Corn Islands, but this is a shame. Nicaragua has been the cheap relatively safe destination recently.

I like St. Barth the best of all the places I have been in the Caribbean.  Rent a villa with a good view and pool.  Hit up beaches.  Fantastic food.  Almost no casino/cruise/Sandals all inclusive type trashy people.

By staying in a villa and eating out mainly for lunches and only a couple dinners, I don't spend any more money there than I do on any other vacation.

Yeah this makes me sad. Went down there a year ago, it was awesome. People were super friendly and usually a little surprised when we told them we were American. They get a good deal of Canadian and European visitors, not as many as you'd expect from the States. People would frequently ask what we thought of their country and their glowing reaction when we responded positively was pretty cool.

Don't know how accurate the article is, but it leads one to believe there are protests nationwide. If it's limited to Managua, who fucking cares. No one goes to Nicaragua to stay in Managua. First thing you do is get in a car and get out of there, even when there aren't protests.

Exactly. Small island, French culture (amazing food, beautiful people, topless beaches), no cruise ship port or cruise ship crowds, no mega resorts or mega resort crowds. It's harder to get to and that's probably a great thing. Arriving by plane is a trip. The only difference from what you described is we do hotels and we eat out nightly. The nighttime dining might be the highlight of the trip.

My first trip to St. Barth ruined the rest of the Caribbean for me. I doubt I could ever be convinced to go anywhere else down there. Maybe I'll visit Tahiti or the Maldives one day, but that's a different discussion.

I get that. When it was just the wife and me going, hotels made sense. I’ve stayed at high end places like Le Toiny and Eden Rock and lower end places like Normandie and Le Village.  Loved them all. And if went back just with wife, I’d do the hotels

But now with kids villas make more sense. Nice to do a beach then a nice lunch then a beach and then a dinner at the house. Wife and I cook listening to music and watching the view while the kids swim. It’s a little pain with kids to rush back to villa and clean up before dinner.  Much more relaxed to eat in and let kids swim

We went ten days over Thanksgiving 2017. And ate in half the nights.  And of the five nights we went out, two we went solo and had a babysitter watch kids. Part of it was some of my favorite spots were still shut down do to the hurricane.  Santa Fe, Eden Rock and Le Toiny were all out of commission.

Interesting takes regarding Aruba. Didn't know people frowned upon it. Is it considered a place where poors go? I mean, I'm a poor, so that makes sense 😛

No, it's just a meh island that gained it's reputation through great marketing...similar to Nassau only WAY further away

Wife and I are planning our 25th to somewhere Carib.  Never been anywhere there.
Making a long story short, we're looking at Barbados (although after reading thru this, I'm going to look at Barth's).  Or at least the farther islands (Windwards).  We'll go to the traditional popular spots another time (the "St's", Caymans, Hispanola area, etc.).  I had a GF who was Bajan, but we never got back to her home, dammit.

We kind of want to go to a less crowded, touristy island, broad white beaches (not necessarily little coves or hills jutting up from the beach).  Looking maybe Airbnb.

We're considering Aruba, too, but after reading through this not sure it's worth the trip, not even to find Natalie Holloway's bones.

I've heard good things as well about Martinique, Guadelope, and Dominca.  Not sure if they're back up from the hurricanes, but hear most of them are.

Thanks for the 2 cents.

If you want big white beaches then Providenciales, Turks and Caicos is almost impossible to beat.  Anguilla would be another I’d look into.

The beaches on St. John and the BVI aren’t huge but they’re mostly beautiful.

If you want quieter go to Anegada in the BVI.  Fantastic island and people and the beaches go on and on and on.

I would strongly consider St. Barth or Anguilla.  I like St. Barth the best.  You can check out villas on Sibarth.com.

https://www.sibarthrealestate.com/sibarthrealestate/

Last November we went for almost 2 weeks and stayed at Villa Bikini.  It was perfect for us since we had our kids.  And was in the perfect location and the price was very fair.

https://www.sibarth.com/our-villas/bkn

How many people are going?  Just you two?  If so, you may want to consider a hotel.  We went for two weeks for our honeymoon and stayed at Eden Rock and Le Toiny, two of the nicest hotels on the island.  And while they were awesome, I kind of felt like we did not get our money's worth.  St. Barth is a place you really don't spend a lot of time at the hotel or resort.  It is a small island with 20+ beaches.  So the typical day would be wake up, have breakfast, go to a beach some where there are maybe 10 other people on, either picnic on beach for lunch or got to a restaurant, go back to a different beach in the afternoon, come back and swim, get ready for dinner, go to dinner, come back and screw/sleep.  So besides sleeping, screwing and showering, we really weren't at the hotel much.  You are at the beaches, shopping, renting a boat, exploring the island, etc.

My point is that when we went back two years later, we stayed at a much cheaper hotel (Le Village in St. Jean) that cost less than half of the others.  It was still plenty nice and truthfully I had just as good of a time.  But if money is not a big concern, Eden Rock and Le Toiny are two I stayed in that are perfect.

Even if it is just you are your wife, you can rent a 1 bedroom villa.  They all will have a pool and daily maid service (except Sunday).  Now we exclusively rent villas.  I like waking up and running to the bakery for croissants (which will cost you a grand total of about $5 for breakfast for two).  Having my coffee while watching the sun rise.  And the privacy.  Having a pool right there to swim in while the wife gets ready for dinner.

St. Barth is not a place to go if you need casinos, golf, or shit like zip lining.  It is a small, beautiful island with beautiful people.  There are a handful of beaches that have bars on the sand (actually now I think it is 4 -- St. Jean, Shell, Lorient (Eden Rock put something there recently), and Gran Cul De Sac.  St. Jean has 3 or 4 now.  Nikki Beach is my favorite.  You can go there for lunch and it starts off tame.  The music steadily gets louder as the afternoon progresses and people get drunker.  Or you can go to Saline, Gouverneur, or Colombier where you can find a spot where no one will be near you for 100-200 yards.

You will need a car.  They aren't expensive.  And driving is fun there.  You will learn the island quickly.

Also I recommend going in Mid October and to Mid December.  Weather is perfect.  Almost no chance for hurricanes.  And that is the low season price wise.  If you go from Mid December to Mid January, that is silly season.  Prices on accommodations are 5x more and the island is crowded with regular people and all the celebs.

February to June are also great times to go.  But given the price of low season, I love late October to Mid December the best.

My favorite restaurants are Santa Fe, Eden Rock, Eddys, Le Tamarin, Le Gaiec (at Le Toiny), Shellona, Le Repaire, Mayas, and La Langouste.  Vietnam is also good and a great value.

If it is just the two of you, try and book early on one of the cheaper flights on Tradewinds from San Juan to St. Barth.  They fly you in on a Pilatus and it is almost like flying private.  I only do that if it is me and the wife, because it is more expensive than going through St. Marteen.  But much less of a hassle. Only customs you have to wait for is in St. Barth, which is a joke and takes two seconds.  Saint Marteen can be a big delay and the airport is in a tent right now due to hurricane Maria.  I think the building is supposed to open soon.  But flying to San Juan and taking a tradewinds flight is so much quicker and easier.  Otherwise you have to get up early, fly from Houston or Dallas to Charlotte or Miami, then connect to St. Marteen, then take another flight or boat to St. Barth.

If you fly to St. Marteen, try and book early through St. Barth Commuter.  It is much cheaper and much better than the other air option -- Winair.  Or you can take the Voyager Express.  It is cheaper than both but takes 45 minutes instead of 10 and the schedule isn't as good (the airplanes leave every 20 minutes or so).  The flight into St Barth is fun.

Rent a boat one day.  It is not that much.  We use Jicky Marine and rent a center console inflatable.  Boating around the island with a cold Presidente and the music going is fun and there is a small island 10 minutes away by boat that has a cool beach and you will likely be the only one there.  You can also go to Colombier, which is an awesome beach that you otherwise half to hike 30 minutes to, and just hook up to a mooring ball.

I have been to a lot of places in the Caribe.  St. Barth is my favorite. The people are great.  And you don't have a lot of the riff raff other islands have with the cruise ship crowds.   And given the island's demographics and wealth, has come back from Maria much faster than anywhere else.  I was there just two months after Maria and they had most of it cleaned up.  The 5 star hotels were not open, but they will all be open by this fall, I believe.

I personally really like Aruba.  The local beaches, like Malmok Beach, where there are no hotels are great.  When we went to Malmok Beach, it had great snorkeling right off shore and had few people there.  Driving around is easy.  Get away from the resorts and there's a ton of variety for dining.  Quite a few European restaurants, an Argentinian steak house, Cuban restaurants, local upscale restaurants and shacks, etc.  Hiking or mountain biking in Arikok NP is good.

I don't believe Jhawk is traveling as a pair anymore.

I'll be traveling with a loaded pair of nuts though.  Had a friend go down to puerto rico when his career started to get serious.  He knew it was one of his last stands so he took viagra and bought some coke down there.  He was there for 4 days.  He didn't sleep and he fucked 12 hookers that week.  Came back, slept through the entire weekend and then got back into the work grind.  Met a responsible gal that went to school to get her Mrs. degree and married her within 18 months.  Not a bad way to go out if you've got to grow up fast.  He is now the top financial guy at a very big restructuring firm and doesn't have time to fuck around.  His wife is basically a glorified housekeeper taking care of everything he doesn't have time to do while making his big paycheck.  She comes complete with a monthly allowance.

So much on here sounds great.  But, which of these islands is accessible by either a normal size jet or a larger regional jet directly or that flight plus a boat / ferry ride?  In other words, no puddle jumpers or sea planes would be involved to get you there.

Yeah but supposedly the one is better with their finances than the 12.  He said it was like $75 a pop and they brought the coke.  Hookers down there don't even know their own value.  His wife spends like she is $8k a month and he is traveling all the time so I bet he only gets it in a few times a month.

If you book one room in the Villa you linked do you need to worry about them booking the other rooms or do they just not give you access to them?

The latter. They just lock those bedrooms.  You will have it all.

There are some nice ones with good values that are just one bedroom. Or two.

Everything I listed with the exception of Anegada which I’d make an exception for anyway since it’s so awesome.
