Today's Golf Match: Lefty & Barkley vs Manning & Curry 2pm TNT CT

Here's a rundown of the pertinent details.

Date: Friday, Nov. 27

Course: Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, Arizona. The par-72, 7,317-yard course is among Golf Digest's Top 100 in the United States and was designed by Jay Morrish, who was a golf architect for Jack Nicklaus from 1972-82.

Start Time: Broadcast begins at 3 p.m. ET

TV Info: TNT

Other TV Notes: A "Cart Cam" live stream will run before and during the event on the Bleacher Report website. TNT's broadcast will feature Brian Anderson, Trevor Immelman and Andre Iguodala. Cheyenne Woods and Gary McCord are set to be on-course announcers, while Eli Manning and Michelle Wie will have a pregame show and be part of "Cart Cam."

Charity Info: The event will raise funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities while promoting awareness and spotlighting opportunities for diversity and equality in sports. Additional money will be raised through unique hole challenges.

Format:  The competition will feature Curry/Manning and Mickelson/Barkley in a modified alternate shot format.

For non-speakers of golf, modified alternate shot means each player will tee off, and the teams will use the best drive and then alternate shots from there.

So, no matter how much success Lefty has had on the PGA Tour and in majors, he'll surely be relying on his Basketball Hall of Fame partner to carry a significant share of the load for as long as the match lasts. And don't look now, but Chuck sounds at least sort of certain that he's up to the task.

"I have put the effort in. I put the work in, and I'm hoping I just can handle it under the pressure," he told Dave Shedloski of Golf Digest. "Let me just say this: I'm not bragging about it, but nobody has worked harder than me to be better at golf. I have hit balls five hours a day for the last six months.

"I just really wanted to get better at golf."

Curry is pretty good, right? (Like he'd be a decent am or club pro) I'm not sure if he's good enough to make this interesting, but Phil may or may not try that hard.

Curry plays all the time in Celebrity tournaments and usually finishes somewhere close to the top 10.

Curry has also played in pro golfs Korn Ferry tourneys...

Not because he qualified for them 😅

He carded an 86 in his last go-round on the web.com/KF. He is nowhere near that level (NTTAWWT).

Found this...

So to suggest that Stephen Curry, a full-time NBA star who's played two events on a minor-league tour, provides real competition for a dialed-in Lefty seems a stretch of gargantuan proportions.

But to suggest Curry is entirely without chops would be quite an error, as well.

The Golden State sharpshooter has been rated between a 0 and a 0.6 handicap golfer over the years, and he'll no doubt be motivated to put on a show once the cameras go live Friday.

As for Manning, he's no Tiger Woods. But he probably won't have to be.  He was listed among the 10 best NFL golfers a few years back by Private Club Marketing, a consulting firm that works with private clubs and golf communities. He was listed alongside Tony Romo, who has played in four PGA Tour events.

Golf Digest listed Manning's handicap at 4 in 2016, at which time the ex-Denver Bronco and Indianapolis Colt had recorded a pair of holes-in-one in his golfing career and fired a 77 on the championship course at Augusta National.

Yeah, which is a good HDCP for a decent amateur or middling club pro. This is a good article that breaks it down:

https://www.seriousgolftalk.com/post/how-to-become-a-pro-golfer

It basically argues that you need somewhere around a +5 HDCP to even get a crack at being a KF regular. The top 5 OWGR players are probably around a +10 or higher on any given day.

I'm sure you understand this, but for the layman - the difference between a scratch handicap and a +5 is absolutely massive. From a quick Google - Curry might be one of the best 50,000 golfers in America. There might be 350 Americans playing on either the PGA or KF tours.

It's basically the difference between making any D1 roster in the country and making the NBA.

The Match golf tournament picks, odds, time: Phil Mickelson, Charles Barkley, Stephen Curry, Peyton Manning

By Kyle Porter         10 mins ago

In what is becoming less of a one-off event and more of a recurring special, The Match: Champions for Change (a.k.a. The Match III) will feature four all-time great athletes (and personalities) in an 18-hole battle at The Stone Canyon Golf Club in Arizona. This time, Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley will team up against Stephen Curry and Charles Barkley in the modified alternate shot match play format.

The Match III is being held on Friday with a start time of 3 p.m. ET on TNT. It will feature all the goodies we've come to enjoy at events like these, including golf cart cameras, microphones everywhere and plenty of interviews throughout the day.

The entire thing should be slightly more laid back than the first two editions -- both of which featured Tiger Woods -- but will also serve to raise money for HBCUs while also highlighting diversity and equality. The whole show should be a nice post-Thanksgiving capper on a week with no PGA Tour golf.

Let's take a closer look at what you can expect on Friday.

Wait, where's Tiger?

It's a good question with an intriguing answer. The Match executive producer Bryan Zuriff told CNBC that it might not necessarily be a bad thing that Woods is not involved this time around. I don't know that he wasn't invited -- given his draw, I'm sure he was -- but it's maybe not the place where his gifts can best shine. "I think it's more than just golf," he said, "and Tiger is the greatest golfer of all time. But to spend three hours with these guys in the golf carts where they should open up, you don't get that with Tiger."

Wait, Charles Barkley?

Barkley has been involved in the broadcast for the first two of these, but now he's teaming up with Mickelson, who said recently that they have some "Chuck tees" at The Stone Canyon Golf Club. Barkley guaranteed a victory, but the format could be problematic for him if Mickelson has to rely on Chuck at all in the alternate shot format. His long -- and often hilarious -- history with golf should lend itself to some terrific television, but I'm not sure it's going to result in a victory.

"We're losing maybe the greatest golf of all-time for maybe the worst of all-time," Zuriff told CNBC.

Where is the money going?

In May, The Match II raised over $20 million for COVID-19 relief. This time around, universities like Morehouse College, Howard, Alabama A&M, Hampton and Winston-Salem State will be the recipients of money from WarnerMedia. Also, there will be on-course competitions (i.e. hole-in-one contests) for money to go to these universities, and the golfers have all teamed up with a school to donate to.

  • Phil Mickelson: Jackson State
  • Charles Barkley: Tuskegee
  • Steph Curry: Howard
  • Peyton Manning: Grambling State, Southern University at New Orleans and Lane College

Curry previously provided enough money to Howard to operate a men's and women's golf program for six years.

Should we expect this every Thanksgiving?

It's starting to sound like it. The first edition of this event -- Mickelson against Woods -- happened on Black Friday in 2018, but the event was skipped last year before reappearing in May to help out with COVID-19 relief. It does sound like it will be a rotating cast of characters on Thanksgiving moving into the future, which should help keep it fresh and fun as long as there are microphones and cameras all over the place.

Viewing experience

TNT will televise the event at 3 p.m., and there will be a ton of folks broadcasting, including Brian Anderson, Trevor Immelman, Andre Iguodala, Cheyenne Woods, Gary McCord, Cari Champion, Eli Manning and Michelle Wie. The B/R Live application will have a cart cam going the entire time, and the pregame show begins at 2 p.m. ET

Odds, prediction

Curry and Manning are -170 favorites over Mickelson and Barkley, who are +140 to win, according to William Hill Sportsbook. I would imagine this is the first time ever (?) a five-time major winner has been an underdog to two non-professional golfers, but that's the effect of Barkley being on your squad.

I said on the First Cut Podcast recently that Manning and Curry are probably swinging it as well as Mickelson is right now, which is ... mostly a joke. I do want to pick Mickelson and Barkley because I'm getting a five-time major winner at plus odds against two non-pros, but Barkley is going to be a problem. I know Curry is legit, and Manning showed out pretty well in May at the match with Woods. I'll reluctantly pick those two to win even if it feels a bit like a sucker bet.  Pick: Manning and Curry -170

I put a little bet down on Phil and Chuck +125. They're going to take Phil's drive on every hole, and I imagine Barkley will just try to get the 2nd shot generally in the direction of the hole. They should be able to par the 3s and 5s. They just need to manage the par 4s and they will have a shot.

Love the matchup. Can't wait

I watch it a bit, and it was a shit show. Can't believe there are many who actually want to sit down and watch a bunch of Am's playing golf.

It's 2am, I'm watching the replay. Thoroughly entertained. Love the commentary, back and forth. Phil is entertaining. I can see how people are entertained.

I have no idea how the side with hall of fame golfer on it was the underdog. Don't care how bad Barkley is. Phil could have had my mom as his partner and he still woulda wore Peyton and Steph the fuck out.

it is Surly, so I thought I should mention that pictures of your mom are not showing up
