China Sucks

I read an article a while back talking about how even if we move our manufacturing to Vietnam, India, or even bring it back here to the US (or Mexico, Brazil, etc.), the Chinese will still try to have a hand in it in some way. Several reasons given for why, but basically came down to money and fear of missing out.  Wonder if the filings are a part of trying to have a finger in every pie or something.

Well, China did make its own IP systems more robust about 15-20 years ago and they do go ahead and file outside of China.  Not sure Vietnam and Indonesia have useful patent systems and that's where you want to go in the first instance (country of manufacture), but big markets are a close second.

One thing that's rather curious is that current Chinese patents (and Korean patents), tend to be much more "western" than Japanese patents in terms of having more "fulsome" disclosures and illustrations.  They seem to be fairly "ready to go" in western jurisdictions like the US or Europe.

The Japanese file bazillions of patents, usually one- or  two-pagers with one or two drawings, that get published (not granted) in Japan and left to die.  It seems that on occasion, they'll pile a half dozen or so of those into a single US application and do that often enough to make Canon the biggest US patentee or one of them, for quite some time.

Article quotes the Chinese at being upset that trade with the US is down 14% this year due to our trade policies. Imagine that is hurting their economy and jobs.

This is great leverage we have over them especially in terms of China staying out of helping Russia more. I suppose they could take an opposite stance by giving more aid to Russia but that is playing with fire.
