Last night was super shitty.  I spent all day w kids at SeaWorld so I didn’t get to the tables until 9pm, planning on getting 6 hours or so in.  Very first orbit I run QQ into KK and get felted.  I actually made a good comeback but then kept running into bad spots with good cards pre that looked terrible post.  Didn’t drop the full 3 buyins which was easily possible if I were a calling station, so that was a positive takeaway.

Day 20: 6 hours, -$765 (-$127/hr)

  1. QQ, -$490; AKo, $55; A9s, $40; KJo, $40; A4s, $85; — -$310 (-$310)
  2. JTs, $35; AJs, $105; KK, $60; AQs, $55; 99, $25; — -$55 ($255)
  3. 66, flopped set, $210; KJs, -$25; KTs, $75; TT, -$250; T8s, -$140; 55, -$45; — -$295 (-$240)
  4. A5o, -$30; KK, $440; AA, -$165; Q9s, -$210; — -$280 ($15)
  5. QTs, -$95; KTs, -$50; KJs, -$55; TT, $85; AQo, $25; — -$430 (-$150)
  6. TT, -$25; Q9s, -$190; — -$765 (-$335)

I’m just posting my pocket cards and the net result of the hand for any hands of significance (generally $20+ win/loss).  I show this per hour, and at the end of the hour I show my status in the current session and in parentheses I show my +- for the hour.

Occasionally I’ll put some hand notes in if I think the action might be interesting to get into w you guys later.

Always feel free to ask questions, post critique etc.

Picked up 10 hours towards the goal, but it wasn’t productive.  I’m starting to get a lot of my opens folded around.  I may have a reputation as too tight.  Not changing yet, but an observation I’ve had after getting no action w AA, KK, AK a lot recently and these are how I make money.

I’d like to do another stream, but they mostly play $5/10 uncapped which is above my comfort level.  My quiet personality and tight play probably don’t make me a preferred player for them to invite.  I’ll keep trying though

Take notes.  It’s crazy how different my perceptions still are from reality.  If not for these notes I would have told you I played in half as many hands because I wasn’t getting cards.  It’s also interesting to watch AA come and go

Wild day. Hour 5 was among the most brutal sustained beatings I’ve taken at the table.

All things considered, down $750 somehow feels like a win

Literally my first hand today (AQo). UTG limped and (thinking about your post) I said fuck it and just limped behind which I never do. BB joins for free.

Ac 9c 3c. UTG makes it $15 and we both call.

Th. Checks through

2s. BB makes it $25 and we both call. BB shows 8c4c.

Great start to the session

200 hours, $3,035 profit. $15.17/hr.

Going to take a few days off and then digest this a bit w stats etc.

Initial reaction is obviously great disappointment, but an interesting baseline has been established if I want to try to improve upon it.

During this process do you think your intuition of being able to predict what others are doing has gotten better?  I think that is what separates those who just play their cards versus predicting what the other guy(s) have at the table by the way they are playing.

Yes, but I feel that the regulars learned more about me than I did of them. The old guys in particular seem to be pretty close and I got the distinct impression they took/shared notes on me. Over the last week I saw a lot of guys reaching for chips to call, then noticing I was the raiser and folding instead. It got to me, frankly.

I knew what they were doing, but now what? The appropriate response would be to open my range until they stopped, but then that leaves me open to being outplayed on the flop with weaker hands.

I need to study. That will be in my next set of goals for sure.

If they have you pegged for playing tight, then play more hands. They shouldn't hang with you to the flip of they think they have them beat. Until they can figure out when you are stretching or not, you should have a good run.

Agreed, why not use your table presence to push some people around.  Eventually they will start calling again and you can go back to a tighter game.

Right, clearly an adjustment needs to be made.  The difficulty is in switching gears but then not overplaying weak hands into their monsters and getting stacked.  When I'm only playing monsters, that's pretty easy to avoid.  This strategy also requires me to be more appreciative of each individual opponent.  The old rocks have this image of me, but the other randoms probably do not and I don't want to expect them to put down anything due to my image alone.

Yeah, I tried to find a connection there.  I'm pretty sure I did indeed do better nights/weekend while struggling more during weekday morning/afternoon sessions.   I might work around that a bit more in my next go.  The other thing to factor in is the high hands (which contributed $600 to my total) are only awarded 10am-noon, 2pm-4 and 8p-11p, so I liked aiming to get two of those covered each day.

I've been watching some of my Jonathan Little videos again and can already see where I got off track from my strategy.  I think I was calling into too many multi way pots vs 3betting (which I probably need to raise my price for so that I don't get more than 2 callers) or folding preflop.  That was bad.  I was also not very committed to my "never limp" mandate, particularly during the high hand hours.  Also, I was probably falling into the "fit or fold" trap post flop.  I need to be more aware of my equity vs opponents ranges and not just assume that their bets on the flop are because they have a hand.  In many cases my range is better than theirs on the flop and they may weaken on future streets if they know that.  Also, I should be check calling or checking rather than cbetting with my middle made hands and middle draws on the flop, while raising/cbetting my strong made hands and strong draws.  Finally (and I need to do more studying here) I was probably getting bet off of too many rivers.  I need to be more confident in my equity on the river vs weaker hands my opponent could be betting the river with.

Just wanted to get in a few hours thinking about some of the topics I’ve been working on. First hour was really just run bad, running top pair into sets twice.

Flopped Q high w AQ in second hour and it was quite obvious opponent had a flush draw. He jammed turn and I snap called and held to win net $475

April 3

2. AQs, $475; TT, $105; TT, -$40; — +$160 (+$510)
3. AKo, $100; 44, $50; AKs, $45; AKs, -$25; — +$260 (+$100)

UTG limps, I make it $30 in UTG+1 and get 5 callers. Ace on flop, UTG and I check, MP makes it $65 and gets two callers. I fold.

I’m UTG and open to $25 and get 4 callers. Ace on the flop and SB shoves $150. I fold.

What’s really ticking me off is that for the last few weeks I’ve frequently had my Aces and Kings folded around to. Today I suddenly get a half dozen callers and then lose.

Last hour, guy opens to $35. I make it $125 in SB w QQ and he shoves $450. I’ve not seen him before and give him benefit of doubt and fold. I then watch him play like a maniac for several orbits, kicking myself. Last hand he again opens to $35 and this time I have KK in SB. I again make it $125 and he again shoves. I can’t get it in fast enough. He shows AJo. Ace on flop. I can’t be mad at getting it all in 70/30, but DAMN the run bad.
