The US Capitol has been Breached [News]

So people are surprised at the National Guard troops sleeping/resting in the Capitol, which tells me they don't know any soldiers, because one of the first things you learn is how to sleep/rest when you have nothing to do.

Edit: On a side note, I expect we'll see a lot more Texas National Guard (and the Texas State Guard or whatever the fuck that weird paramilitary organization is) downtown over the next several days.

I have friends who work downtown, who are being told to stay home Wednesday.

Imagine that funeral later this week.

"Sorry for your loss.  How'd he go?"

"Uh...cardiac arrest.  Doc said it was real peaceful like."

"really?  I read it was an electric shock to the ball sack."

"Goddamit...it was a regular heart attack because of the taser!"

"Well what was he doing tasing himself?"

"Sonofabitch...he was a patriot!  Balls, heart, brain...who cares?  He's fucking dead!"

"Okay, sorry.  We was just wondering which taser death charity to make a donation to on account of his patriotic bravery."

Houston police officer accused of penetrating Capitol could face federal charges, Acevedo says

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said during remarks Wednesday that a Houston police officer on his own time attended the Trump rally in Washington and then “penetrated” the U.S. Capitol building last week.

There is an investigation underway and Acevedo said he is “highly confident” he will be facing federal charges. He is now on administrative leave, Acevedo said.

There’s piles of armed troops sleeping in broad daylight on the floor of the public atriums in the Capitol building. You literally couldn’t even make up that scene in a movie.

if you aren’t surprised by the entire scene, you’ve become numb to it.

We are in a simulation.

I'm more referring to people thinking that they should be doing something, like hurry up and wait or something.  From what it sounds like they are running shifts around the clock.

But yeah, it's really fucking surreal.

If the crazies come out, they will have plenty to do, and more people will discover what "fuck around and find out" means.

That officer is gonna have a really awkward time at next year's "Blue Line" fundraising gala.

"Uh, Officer Pham...weren't you just a few feet away when your fellow insurrectional terrorists beat a fellow police officer to death with rudimentary objects?"

"Well yeah, but we gotta hold the blue line.  My wife and I made this pie to sell this year."

Who was your 7th grade social studies teacher that failed to teach you the difference between the seat of the U.S. Government (hint, it's not the White House) and a Duane Reade in midtown?

If there is no vote on removal from office, there can be no requirement it was passed with a 2/3rds majority.  There is a deal underway to skip that step since he'll already be outta office.  No guarantees obviously since we are in completely uncharted territory.  /noCR

Agreed on uncharted territory.  No official has ever been convicted on impeachment after leaving office.  There is quite a bit of discussion going on that for that reason, once Jan. 20 hits, the articles become void.  One judicial guy I saw today said that if that happens, a "removal from future office" ether cannot take place or wouldn't be clearly legal.  It would almost certainly go through the courts to decide.

If Democrats go ahead with a trial and vote, conviction is almost 100% unlikely.  And if acquittal happens, the official can't be bared from future office since he was "not guilty" of impeachment charges (sorta double jeopardy type of thing).

Skipping the trial on the articles and moving directly to future office banishment would probably be the best shot, but it wouldn't be settled after a vote to banish.  It would certainly be up for judicial ruling.

Not something we've ever seen and no one knows what the final outcome would be.

Yeah, the more I think about Mitch's master-stroke of genius, it will end up being challenged in court.  But the good news is that it'll uphold and we've got time---nearly 3 years.  Bad news is 3 years is a long time for uncertainty and will make more and more Republicans try to "out-insane" one another.

The real question is---who brings the suit to invalidate the 14th amendment Senate vote?  Trump himself, I guess?  The DOJ, the RNC, U.S. Solicitor General.......none of those folks are gonna touch it.  I'm guessing it's Trump v. U.S. and it starts at D.D.C.  And he'll lose there.  Kicks up to D.C. Cir. where it's evenly-split between Rep. & Dem. nominees.  And if it makes it through there, it's on to SCOTUS where he curries much more favor.  The GOP elites will do everything and anything though to prevent this though because while all of this is shaking out in court...it fucks with midterm efforts to take back the House and Senate, and it puts any other viable candidate in a shitty holding patter---they can't raise money for 2024 with that big albatross of a human being stirring shit up in Federal Courts.

And therein lies the rub, he's gonna raise another $100mm for the legal battle.  So bank on Trump fighting this thing if only for the money.

Completely uncharted waters for our nation for him to not be removed from office, term out of office, hide out in Scotland/Florida, be banned from federal office forever by the Senate, fight it legally for 3 years, and still hold his party hostage from afar.  If he's half the showman I think he is, he's gonna make a reality show out of this somehow and I admit---I'll watch the shit out of it.

It would appear that GOP is done with Trump, but Trump ain't done with the GOP.

Saw that firsthand before 70 years ago after Puerto Rican nationalists tried to take over the capitol in San Juan.
(as our school bus drove by the building under armed escort - regular US Army troops - back home to Fort Brooke).

pretty unsettling for a 1st grade kid to see.

Alright, I'm a little guilty of it myself...we're CR'ing up this thread again.

Let's get back to fun news like photos of a military occupation of our own Capitol building.  Lots of chatter turning to these guys storming other monuments/buildings of interest around D.C. during the Inauguration since the security focus will be on the Capitol.  It's like some of these people are just trying to invent ways to get shot.  I'm done pretending to care though, I'm actively rooting for these "patriots" to be imprisoned, gunned down, or better yet---blow themselves up accidentally.  And we will laugh and laugh about this until we are very old men.

All fucking traitors must fucking hang.  And those of you defending their rights, you continue to lead your mediocre lives...the world needs ditchdiggers too.

I’m not cheering for any violence. I’m cheering for these guys to realize that their “delusions of glory” aren’t going to lead them to where they think it is. I’m hoping they come to their goddamn senses and return to “fighting” at the ballot box. An armed conflict between right wing nut jobs is the last thing we need as a country right now.

Great. You want a civil war at worst and more McVeigh’s at least. You’re a dumbass.

No, I don't want a civil war, and we already have a shitload more mcveigh's. I'd just rather all the loud seditious insurrectionist assholes finally face some fucking repurcussions so they'll stop acting fucking crazy. There's already support from the police and military members for this sedition - the capitol assault could not have happened without it.

Facing a fucking problem head-on tends to have fewer long-lasting repurcussions than relying on the civility of bad faith actors. Hitler didn't rise to dictatorship the first attempt, and the interim years of trying to not anger a dangerous base only enabled the nazis to grow quietly and in the dark.

Put some sunshine on these fuckers. Don't let them slink away into the dark corners of the internet. Put their shit on blast.

I hope they're dumb enough to fuck around again, so that there can be no equivocation or deflection from the evil and rot that they are. And ya know, seeing the gravy seals square off with the national guard would be at least something for the last four years of madness

It’s really easy to spew this bullshit when it won’t be your ass dodging bullets. These right wing nut jobs are fucking idiots and the world would be better without them, but they are very well armed. It’s not much of a leap to assume that in the event there is violence that they won’t be the only ones harmed. There will be casualties from the National Guard. You’re really quick to volunteer other people to put their asses on the line.

I'm not the one fomenting revolt and inciting violence, nor am I making excuses for them. I'm not someone who's equivocating the open revolt against democracy to protests and riots against police brutality.

I'm not volunteering their asses to be put on the line - the insurrectionists (who also believe COVID is just another flu and that facemasks are tyranny lol) are the folks causing this. They're the people planting IED's in the cradle of our democracy. They are THE THREAT! They aren't going to just go away if we're nice to them and give them a safe space.

And yeah servicemembers are probably going to be harmed if the red hats start violence at state capitols and in DC. But I also know that it'll be the fucking END of their madness and trumpism at large. And that's what's important with dictators and fascists. You gotta stop them cold after the first coup attempt. The second time is when the seat of your democracy is destroyed and the extremists seize power.

Facing repercussions legally and facing repercussions violently are two different things. You posted a “let them fight” suggesting that you would prefer that these nut jobs face off with the military. I would rather they be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Your guts and glory boner for “red hats” is fucking disgusting simply because you will be cheering from the sidelines. Maybe sign up for the guard so you can shoot a few of them yourself since you want this so badly.

Go after anyone that threatens violence against the government as some of these people have. But the last thing that should ever be hoped for is actual violence. I don’t want a single person to face a bullet over this.

That's a good point, there will be unnecessary casualties in this next wave of uprisings but that ain't on us.  It's on a small handful of "leaders."  Some people are gonna hang/die for this, it's a question of whom at this point.  Surely you see we're past that point.  It's a question of who they are and how they chose to be taken into custody.  Many of those folks who did this and who are thinking of doing this again simply don't have the mental faculties to understand our judicial system.  They don't grasp that they are in serious trouble and will either be taken to federal prison for decades or they can die by firefight.  And then there's the third group which has already reared its head...there are those that are going to take their own lives once they realize what they've done (we're already at two there, and counting).

The people that will be attempting/committing atrocities in the name of "patriotism" or "liberty" or "stolen elections" are the cannon fodder that has been unleashed by their handlers.  Right now, as we read this thread...there are normal Americans in rooms with "less normal" Americans, winding them up, hyping them up, convincing them to do shit next week that is beyond the pale.  The idea is to show force, but still leave a little wiggle room to let a few nutjobs come out of the woodwork and try to infiltrate the SCOTUS building, or the Eisenhower Building, or the Lincoln Memorial, or something similar.  Capture and arrest those folks, and then interrogate them to see who is really winding these people up behind the scenes.  People are already flipping on one another.  I think traps are being set to grab more of these guys and get to the real people behind this.  It works for every other chain of command in criminal enterprise, it should work here.  Plus these guys leave the stupidest digital footprints.

Just spoke with a colleague here on campus who runs UT's governmental internship program (both in D.C. and at the Texas Capitol, probably the biggest of its kind in the nation in terms of students placed).  They've been getting call after call for the last week from crying students who are terrified at what happened to them last week in D.C.  They're asking to come back and maybe resume the internship later and not risk losing course credit or their stipend.  They are frightened at what's going to happen next, hearing all kinds of rumors from fellow staffers in other offices about how deep this goes, and not really looking to get 3 credit hours for being an inch away from losing their lives.  Remember, these are effectively still kids even at age 19 or 20.  On top of that, calls every hour from a parent of one of these kids asking to bring them home as they cobble money together to get their kid a last minute flight back to Texas.

But let's make damn fucking sure the next wave of people to commit murderous and seditious acts are treated with non-violence, unity, and liberty.

Hey now mr putting words in my mouth, I have no dream of committing violence against my fellow American. I just want them to face appropriate consequences for their actions, and especially so now that our nations capitol has a fucking DIVISIONAL LEVEL DEPLOYMENT to guard against the insurrectionists.

This is a really dumb thing to be picking a fight over tbh, there's much more significant and concerning things happening if you haven't noticed. Almost begs the question why you spend so many words deflecting from the seditious insurrectionists and framing them as victims

If (big if) things do get violent, I’m hoping for a swift end to it with as little bloodshed as possible. I want all those responsible for what happened last week to be held accountable for it. I want anyone threatening more violence to be held accountable. I want those morons to be proven to be too full of shit to actually follow through with any “plans”. I fully understand being prepared. THE 20,000 NATIONAL Guard troops preparing for pro-Trump demonstrations this weekend in the nation's capital will be armed and permitted to use lethal force, the headquarters overseeing them says, marking a striking escalation in the way authorities there are preparing for repeat violence after last week's deadly mob.

I can't speak to whether or not it is an Austin chapter of the Democratic Underground, but I can speak to my own experience.  I'm sure you all know that I'm an old.  I'm also very far from being a woke proponent of the cancel culture.  I'm a proud Texan whose family has been here since before the Republic.  I'm proud of the fact that I have ancestors that signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and fought and died at the Alamo.  I'm also not so proud of the fact that I had ancestors who shed blood for the Confederacy even though I was moved when I walked on some of the very ground where they fought.   I'm a proud graduate of the University of Texas.  I love the University and am extremely grateful for the opportunities that my education there provided for me.  The Eyes of Texas never fails to give me chills, and I will be extremely saddened if it goes away.  I am also part of the generation that turned Texas from blue to solidly red and put Ronald Reagan in office.  I always believed that the Republican party stood for law and order, liberty, and freedom from government interference in my life.  I have never voted straight ticket in any any election (I don't even believe that it should be an option), but have never voted for a member of the Democratic Party for any statewide, or national office (I did once vote in the Democratic Party primary though).  It's been obvious to me since the second Bush that the Republican party has been drifting away from the principals that it once stood for and I have been voting strictly for third party candidates for statewide and national offices.  I firmly believe that the strict two party systems does a great disservice to this country.  I, like many, was appalled at the violence brought about by the BLM movement and believe that those responsible should be held accountable for their actions.  However, I absolutely cannot fathom how anyone could watch the actions that precipitated that movement and fail to understand that there is systemic racism within law enforcement and the justice system in this country.  I am just as appalled at the violence that has been perpetrated against citizens of this country by those who are supposed to uphold the law, and serve and protect those citizens.  I also believe that those responsible for those crimes should be held accountable for their actions.  It's clear now that the Republican Party is no longer drifting away from its' ideals, but rather riding the crest of a tidal wave created by a narcissistic sociopath who would spend his, and this country's, last breath in  a futile effort to hang on to power.  The fact that there are such a large number of very vocal people who fail to see that the events that unfolded in the Capital Building were nothing less than an effort to subvert the democratic process, called for by the very man that is supposed to be the leader of the free world, has me very very frightened for the future of this country.  If you would have told me in 2016 that one of this country's major political parties could turn itself into nothing more than a "cult of personality" I would have laughed in your face.  Well I'm not laughing anymore.  I can also tell you one thing for a fact. I will vote against Ted Cruz in any primary that he runs in, and if he wins in the primary I will vote for his Democratic opponent no matter who it is.  As bad as I feel a strict two party system is for this country, a strict one party system is certainly not the answer and that is the road the the Republican Party is currently leading us down.
Yes I know TLDR
Old man yelling at the clouds
OK boomer
Whatever, at least President Trump has the excuse that he’s a narcissistic sociopath.   Ted Cruz’s only excuse is that he’s hanging on to Tump’s nut sack for dear life.  It’s enablers like him that will give the Republican Party what they lust after, a country where one party holds the Presidency and both houses of Congress.  I hope he enjoys it.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming of banging sluts while the country burns.

This right here. Every bit of it.

20,000 that we know about?  Probably another few thousand if you include those in plain clothes, DC Metro, Capitol Police, and Secret Service.

I know most of y'all Back the Blue and Support the Troops but ain't no like the maths.  That's nearly an entire Corps.

This is not Division level, this is a Corps level in total count.  This is now probably a 3-X/3-star command given all the elements (yes, I know not all elements fall under military command given all the other state and local agencies involved).  That's insane, we have a Corps-level safety posture at our own seat of government for our own "peaceful" transition of power.  Think about how fucking crazy that is.  We have less than that when we hand-off power in Germany, Japan, Afghanistan, or Iraq.

But I'm sure that Corps-level deployment is because so many patriotic, anti-socialist, freedom-loving Americans just want to watch a peaceful transition of power.  Your team is just itching to fuck around and find out.  You invited by incited.

It wasn't my lawyer that said, "Let's do Trial by Combat."  It was your guys' lawyer.  Mine told me to shut up and pay her.
