So people are surprised at the National Guard troops sleeping/resting in the Capitol, which tells me they don't know any soldiers, because one of the first things you learn is how to sleep/rest when you have nothing to do.

Edit: On a side note, I expect we'll see a lot more Texas National Guard (and the Texas State Guard or whatever the fuck that weird paramilitary organization is) downtown over the next several days.

I have friends who work downtown, who are being told to stay home Wednesday.

Received this email this morning.

Quote

This was sent to me from the III Corps Force Protection Cell.  If you don’t have any reason to be in Austin and especially around the Capitol, you may want to avoid the area.

BLUF: The FBI reports that protests are being planned in all 50 state capitols from 16 JAN through 20 January 2021.  The Austin Regional Intelligence Center (ARIC) reports that Austin protest-related activity is centered on the capitol grounds.  The primary days showing activity are 12 JAN (opening day of the Texas legislature) and 17 JAN.  There are indications that some of these events will have armed subjects in attendance.  The situation remains fluid so events from 13-17 JAN may pop up with little to no notice.   There are no specific threats to DoD personnel or facilities in the Austin area at this time.

Event#1: REFUSE TO BE SILENCED: ARMED MARCH ON ALL STATE CAPITOLS.

When: Sunday, 17 January beginning at 1200 HRS

Where: Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Avenue, Austin TX 78701

Synopsis: Planned gathering at the Texas State Capitol to demand an end to unconstitutional mandates and show support for President Trump. Supporters intend to advocate for “freedom and liberty.” There are indications the event may be organized by known armed groups.

Event #2: Texas – Freedom Event.

When: Sunday, 17 January beginning at 1200 HRS

Where: Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Avenue, Austin TX 78701

Synopsis: Planned gathering at the Texas State Capitol to show unity of the American people in spite of “seeing how our government has polarized us against each other.”

Event#6: FREEDOM IS NOT A PRIVILEGE. FREEDOM IS A RIGHT.

When: Sunday, 17 January beginning at 1400 HRS

Where: Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Avenue, Austin TX 78701

Synopsis: Planned gathering at the Texas State Capitol to demand an end to unconstitutional mandates and show support for President Trump. Supporters intend to advocate for “freedom and liberty.”

Surprised the 20th is getting a pass in this, but I would avoid the capitol 16-20.

20,000 that we know about?  Probably another few thousand if you include those in plain clothes, DC Metro, Capitol Police, and Secret Service.

I know most of y'all Back the Blue and Support the Troops but ain't no like the maths.  That's nearly an entire Corps.

This is not Division level, this is a Corps level in total count.  This is now probably a 3-X/3-star command given all the elements (yes, I know not all elements fall under military command given all the other state and local agencies involved).  That's insane, we have a Corps-level safety posture at our own seat of government for our own "peaceful" transition of power.  Think about how fucking crazy that is.  We have less than that when we hand-off power in Germany, Japan, Afghanistan, or Iraq.

But I'm sure that Corps-level deployment is because so many patriotic, anti-socialist, freedom-loving Americans just want to watch a peaceful transition of power.  Your team is just itching to fuck around and find out.  You invited by incited.

It wasn't my lawyer that said, "Let's do Trial by Combat."  It was your guys' lawyer.  Mine told me to shut up and pay her.

20,000 ain't a Corps.  I know because I worked for a corps level command structure, 7th Corps under General Franks, before and after Desert Storm.  A corps usually consists of 3 to 4 mixed divisions or more as in Dessert Storm, your talking about 70k to start?  20k is division size and is probably pulled from multiple states.  Also a lot of military is conservative and there are probably some who may support this.....

I realize the initial announcement of 20k is basically just a large mixed division and stated as such.  I qualified my “corps” observation with the fact you have to take into account dc metro, Capitol police, plain clothes military and law enforcement, staties from everywhere between New Jersey and North Carolina.  You out all that together, you’re probably talking 50k+, or Corps size. And again, for the third time, I know that doesn’t all fall under a 2 or 3 star command.  It’s just that the force posture will be the equivalent of a Corps level deployment.  Which again to protect our own buildings from our own people during our own ceremonial peaceful transition of power.......is fucking insane.

My office building downtown (by El Arroyo) sent out a memo that our building is going to “lock down” and can only be entered with our key fobs. Seems like an odd place to expect something bad to occur. Wondering if this is just what most buildings are doing or if they have some specific concerns.

Pretty sure most of the buildings anywhere close to downtown are doing something similar.  A mob that clashes with cops, then flees or moves the melee a few blocks, can cause mayhem farther away from the focal point than you'd think.

Similar precautions were taken with respect to planned demonstrations on police violence issues this summer.  Fortunately, almost all of the shenanigans remained localized around APD HQ.

I think it's because you're physically close to the El Arroyo marquis sign which incited the MAGA crowd this morning and may cause violence.

I'm assuming this was a joke? Unless they changed it, today's sign isn't inciting anything other than a craving for queso.

The DOJ news conference was enlightening. DOJ referred to it as an "insurrection" and FBI called it a "siege on the capitol"

Big quote was: "We are at about 270 cases at the moment and we expect to be beyond 300 after the day, and then increase exponentially after that"

Skip to 12 minutes if you care to listen

  • 98 active Federal felony charges
  • 140,000 pictures and videos reported by the American public
  • 40 arrests
  • 140 in custody
  • "If this was a football game, we're still in the first quarter"
  • "You attack one of us, you attack us all"
  • "Every FBI field office in the country is looking for you. In fact your friends and family are tipping us off. So you might want to turn yourself in instead of wondering when we'll knock on your door. Because we will."
  • ~37 suspects in Officer's Sicknick's death (ABC News estimate)
  • No direct evidence yet of kill/capture teams
  • Devices did not explode on the 6th, they were disarmed by special teams
  • Regarding whether there was any involvement from lawmakers, the agencies are looking into it
  • Several people have turned themselves in with Defense lawyers. "We are not cutting deals with anyone, they will still be held accountable. In some cases they are reporting activity of others. We encourage anyone to turn themselves in, it may benefit you." (paraphrase). As others have pointed out, these seem like a contradiction, but turning yourself in and cooperating can achieve things like reduced sentences, which is not the same thing as cutting a deal.
  • Regarding definitively how Officer Sicknick died... still under investigation.
  • Journalist asked: How credible of a threat are the upcoming days? Not answered

So Maryland's Governor's office just called our terminal in Frederick, MD to see about the requisitioning (with pay, of course) a few straight trucks to bring additional barricades/"riot control devices" (whatever the fuck that means)/etc. into D.C. proper this weekend.  The last time we got a call was in the days after September 11th when they asked for refrigerated trailers to move the pieces of crushed dead people out of Ground Zero.

This is not the next America.  This is the one we're in now.  The future didn't bring us this, the past did.  We have to haul in tens of thousands of pounds of anti-violence equipment because we can't hand over power peacefully.  I gotta worry about hardworking, god-loving truck drivers going into harm's way to unload riot barricades because millions of fucking idiots don't understand when they've been defeated.  If they'll beat a cop, they'll sure as shit beat a truck-driver.  These fucking idiots still don't get it.  When somebody has their boot on your throat, shut the fuck up and accept your fate.  The reason they're scared that this moment of feeling significant is fleeting...is because it is...because people like us designed it to be.  You serve no more purpose.

Domestic truckers gotta move riot equipment for our "peaceful transfer of power."  Jesus Fucking Christ you fucking children.  This is the kinda shit they do in North Korea.

Bolded that bullet because it reflects the advice a federal judge gave me should I ever get a criminal defense assignment (which ended up happening -- understand that 90% of such assignments are drug conspiracy cases).  He explained that while you need to look at the evidence carefully, and see if you have a meaningful defense, if they've got your guy.....your job is to get him to flip FIRST.  That way, he gets the most-reduced sentence.

You're still getting convicted of everything they charged you with.  But if the set of charges has a range of 5-10 years, your guy can get closer to the 5 year end.  That's the game to play.  Flip, get 5.  Stand firm and refuse to talk, get 10.

Your move, MAGAs.

Finding out.

I am sad about this.  A lot of mentally ill people being swept up into criminal justice but that’s what we do.  I’d guess 10 percent need to be hung from the neck for sedition but we’ll get the wrong ones.

Friends that work downtown just a block or two off of Congress) were getting the same memos from their building folks.  They are expecting a shitload of these people to be driving up and down Congress in front of the Capitol and near the Governor's mansion (they really really fucking hate Abbott).  Their building folks said Congress and some other streets may even be closed off near the Capitol.

Expect people who couldn't pass a PT test or can barely lift their rifle up like these types.

If it gets crazy, we need a gameday thread, preferably with a live cam on people fucking around with DPS Troopers and finding out.

Left out of that press conference:  139,000 of these photos and videos were taken by people being investigated by the FBI.

A lot blows my mind about last week, but these things are sticking out right now, with all of the arrests and charges:

  1. These people literally had the opportunity to remain masked everywhere they went, which might have protected their identify.  But nope, gotta show the world their mugs.
  2. Idiocracy is in full effect, with these people documenting damn near every crime they committed last week.

And then combine those two things:  "We aren't going to cover our faces, which could conceal our identity, and we are going to post all over fucking social media as we break in, fuck around, and eventually find out!"

That escalated quickly.

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/texas-state-capitol-to-close-saturday-through-inauguration-day-due-to-planned-armed-protests/

Quote

The Texas Department of Public Safety has announced temporary closures at the Texas State Capitol and grounds starting Saturday and lasting through Wednesday of next week in preparation for possible armed protests.

Quote

“The Texas Department of Public Safety is aware of armed protests planned at the Texas State Capitol this week and violent extremists who may seek to exploit constitutionally protected events to conduct criminal acts,” said Texas DPS Director Steven McCraw in a press release.

The agency said it has deployed additional personnel and resources to the Capitol. It is working with the FBI and the Austin Police Department to monitor any events that may happen.

Quote

Texas DPS tightened security at the Capitol after armed protesters showed up Tuesday at the start of the Texas Legislative Session.

Quote

According to several legislators in both the House and Senate, Texas DPS said law enforcement officials are monitoring several groups who pose a threat of violence, ranging in size from 60 to hundreds.

Quote

Ahead of the expected armed protests, businesses surrounding the Capitol have already started boarding up. G4S, a national security services company, is offering advice to those preparing for the unrest.

There is a protest march in Lansing, at the Capitol tomorrow, same groups that were here off/on all summer. The National Guard has all ready been called up, and I'll drive by today to see if they are deployed and if fences are up.
Crazy shit - there is some group protesting at the Capitol almost every week, but nothing like the show of guns that have been a regular thing this year.

For the past 30 minutes I've been able to hear a chopper circling the Capitol from my front porch on the East side. They are indeed not fucking around. According to twitter there's not much more than a handful of armed clowns out there now though? Still is weird to hear the chopper and know why it's been circling. Could also be media though, who knows.

Everybody's been paying attention to what's going on over at the Capitol, meanwhile Abbott is sitting in the Governor's Mansion facing off against a bunch of anti-maskers.

They look like idiots because If you're going to carry in Texas around public areas, and you are going to rock a cowboy hat and cowboy boots, get with the fucking program, leave the M4 and body armor at home (Norks aren't invading, nor are the Cubans), and carry this:

640px-WinchesterModel1886cutout.png

Or even better, one of these

Berdan_Sharps_rifle.jpg

I give no fucks about M4s.  They are boring.

Carry one of those rifles above, I'm going to stop you and talk to you about it.  Especially if it's a Sharps, that's been on my bucket list to shoot.

Those M4s look like fucking douchebag toys, especially when carried in front of an overstuffed tactical vest. I had a plastic M16 when I was 6 that went ratatatatatatat and it was cooler than the M4. What an awful cliche.

If you're going to carry, lever action looks cool. I've got a Winchester John Wayne commemorative 1892 .44-40, with the trigger guard big enough to accommodate riding gloves. I'd put it on an oiled king ranch leather strap and carry it against my back.

Thats the only appropriate way to tote a long gun. Not like you're walking point, gun at the ready, near the ho chi minh trail.

Speaking of overstuffed (although as a whole, yeah, DPS is not in a fuck around and find out mood).
