Most people seem to think Lawrence is a better prospect than Luck was. I don’t know about that but he’s certainly better than the Goff, Wentz, Mayfield, Darnold, etc. of late.

Fields put up great stats, but so did Haskins in the system. He also had some subpar games against meh teams. Bailing on UGA because he couldn’t beat out Fromm seems weak to me so maybe that’s why I’d stay away from him in the top 5.

Wilson has intangibles in his play style that I really like. It’s too risky to take him over Lawrence since he (like any prospect) could be a bust, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up the better pro QB.

Lance...who knows? He basically played one year and he’s in FCS. Mac Jones...did great playing with a bunch of fellow future first rounder picks on OL and WR. Tua was supposed to be the greatest prospect ever and people are cooling on him after his rookie season, so you have to wonder what would make Jones better than Tua?

Fields didn't have an opportunity to beat out Fromm. They were sticking with what was working and he decided to find a place to play. Clearly he upgraded.

TALES FROM THE SENIOR BOWL

Quote

I always love being in Mobile for the Senior Bowl. But this year was different. Veet’s and the barroom at the Battle House were hollowed-out shells of what have been in Januarys past. The great restaurants downtown, places like Noja and Dumbwaiter, were walk-up-and-get-a-table empty during what normally is a busy week. Which, of course, is due to the situation we’re all in as Americans.

But from a scouting perspective, and for the reasons we laid out in this week’s GamePlan, the week was as important as Senior Bowl week has ever been. There’ll be no combine in 2021. Pro days will be managed and limited. Teams won’t be able to fly players in. All of which made this week the only chance coaches and scouts are guaranteed to have to watch the players move around in person and talk to them face-to-face.

So what was learned? Here are a few things …

This is another bumper crop of receivers. Even with LSU’s Ja'Marr Chase, Alabama’s Jaylen Waddle, Minnesota’s Rashod Bateman and Purdue’s Rondale Moore absent (and Bama Heisman winner DeVonta Smith there but only for interviews), the receivers were clearly the most talked about position group. A number of them helped themselves.

D’Wayne Eskridge, Western Michigan: I had one exec tell me Eskridge won every one-on-one he saw him in this week. He’s a little small, but he’s got lightning short-area quickness, sticky hands, and always seems to be open. Literally everyone I talked to loved him.

Amari Rodgers, Clemson: He showed burst, savvy and play strength that, combined with his collegiate production, evoked some Sterling Shepard comparisons.

Kadarius Toney, Florida: He had accountability and maturity flags, but word is Toney really turned the off-field stuff around in 2020, and he’s a stick of dynamite as a player. He had a couple drops and a fumble in practices, but his movement skills are undeniable, and he got comps to fellow ex-Gator Percy Harvin from multiple scouts I talked to.

Tylan Wallace, Oklahoma State: He’s built like a running back, and is a really good route-runner, which had him winning in drills consistently.

South Carolina’s Shi Smith and South Dakota State’s Cade Johnson elicited mention too, and you get the picture.

The quarterback group didn’t generate very much excitement, and that includes Alabama star Mac Jones. That’s not to say Jones didn’t practice well. He did. It just wasn’t enough to change many people’s minds on him, good or bad. One scout I talked to said, “I think he’s just a guy,” while another called him “O.K.” I’m not positive Jones will go in the first round. We’ll see. He might. I just don’t have conviction on it after this week. Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond showed enough that one evaluator called him, “an intriguing developmental guy.”

• While top guys like Alabama’s Patrick Surtain and Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley weren’t in Mobile, and that’s part of the reason here, play at corner had NFL types believing that it’ll be a down year at the position. UCF CB Aaron Robinson and S Richie Grant were two guys who did stand out in the secondary. Robinson showed ball skills and an ability to play man-to-man, and both he and Grant showed polished technique and smarts for their positions. Washington’s Keith Taylor is another who had a good week—and played well in the game.

• A couple of defensive linemen helped themselves, UCLA’s Osa Odighizuwa’s name was one that came up consistently, as a disruptive, long-armed, upfield/inside type of pass rusher. Notre Dame’s Daelin Hayes was another who showed good versatility. And Washington’s Levi Onwuzurike, more of a pure defensive tackle, was among the best players on the field—one 2020 opt-out who didn’t show much rust.

The running back group had a couple stars in it too. North Carolina’s Michael Carter showed quickness, burst and vision all week. Virginia Tech’s Khalil Herbert also impressed with his quickness. And Demetric Felton, primarily a tailback at UCLA, played a bunch in the slot and looked really good.

Wisconsin-Whitewater interior OL Quinn Meinerz came in as a dice-roll pick by the Senior Bowl staff, and he really changed some people’s minds on him. Showing good strength and an ability to handle a power rush answers what’s always going to be a question for a Div. III lineman trying to make it to the NFL. Western Michigan’s Jaylon Moore was another lineman who stood out, with his ability to play four positions. Conversely, Bama’s Alex Leatherwood wanted to prove this week he could play left tackle in the pros and showed the athleticism to pull it off.

A couple safeties who elicited mention and were interesting to me: Virginia Tech’s Divine Deablo and Florida State’s Hamsah Nasirildeen. Why? They’re both gigantic. So fire up your Kam Chancellor comps.

And so begins draft season. Big shout out to Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy and his staff. What they pulled off this week, under these conditions, was pretty mind-blowing.

Obligatory caveat: Matt Miller is a Texas fan.

He has both Cosmi and Ossai going in the second round, Sterns in the fourth, Ehlinger and Graham in the fifth, Brown and Eagles in the seventh.

Still hoping for Ossai to go in the 1st Rd due to his high motor.  Been seeing Cosmi falling to the 2nd Rd in a lot of recent mock drafts.

Interested to see Caden's Pro Day results for the 40 and shuttle.  Some have him in the 4th Rd, but there are concerns he may fall as far as a 6th Rd pick.

The rest of the TEXAS players is a crapshoot at where they may end up in the draft...

Article says "good arm strength" WTF?? (Poor Ehlinger always with shoulder problems because mensa used him too much on power running plays.)

Projection   Fourth round to seventh round

2021 NFL draft profile: Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger

February 11, 2021

Quote

Longhorns Wire will create a draft profile for each former Texas player transitioning to the NFL in 2021.  Each profile will be updated according to where the player is eventually selected in the 2021 NFL draft and/or where they choose to sign as undrafted free agents. Texas’ beloved quarterback Sam Ehlinger is up next.

Class: Sr. Height: 6-2. Weight: 220

Pros

He’s clearly a very strong runner. Not the fastest player, but he plays with power and elusiveness that’s made him an open field threat — both on designed runs and while escaping pressure.

Good arm strength. When he does push the ball down field, it has a good arch and distance on it.  Accurate on short, underneath routes. His bread and butter for moving the chains has been the under 10 yard passes which have been pinpoint on the spot.

Good game awareness. He is able to avoid pressure and keep the flow of the game alive. Doesn’t take sacks late in the game and gets rid of the ball when the play is busted.

Cons

Not a very accurate deep passer. Despite his ability to throw it deep, he doesn’t consistently get the ball to his receivers down the field. These passes are often overthrown or thrown too close to contention from the secondary.

Takes too many hits as a runner. When running upfield (not on QB power), instead of sliding, he’ll try and for extra yards by taking on contact.

Stares down his receivers way too often. Against Big 12 defenses, staring down the person you’re going to throw to will have almost no effect, but will get you kicked out at the next level. Instead of masking reads, he’s made his decision from when the team lines up.

Analysis

His leadership, athleticism and will to win is what people mention most about Ehlinger. His intangibles make him an attractive prospect for teams looking for a developmental player.

He needs to work on his deep ball accuracy, protecting himself and his decision making. He can’t settle for short routes and needs to work on not giving away where he’s going with the ball to opposing defenses.

Still, with a 30-16 career record and traits that a lot of teams can work with (deep ball, mobility), he’s going to get a chance in the league. It won’t come any higher than the fourth round, but his name will get called.

Projection

Fourth round to seventh round

OUCH-- "Cosmi and Ossai are each worthy of first round grades, but it appears the draft may not play out in their favor."

NFL Draft: Could Joseph Ossai and Samuel Cosmi slide out of the first round?

Shane Carter   February 22, 2021

Offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi and edge rusher Joseph Ossai are expected to be the first pair of Texas players taken off of the board in the 2021 NFL draft.  Each rank among the top prospects at their positions and have been selected in the first round of numerous mock drafts. Additionally, they play premium positions teams are always looking to upgrade and draft higher than other positions.

Cosmi has been lauded for his large frame, long arms and his pass blocking abilities, which were among the best in the country and the highest in the Big 12.

Ossai has been lauded for his flexibility as a defensive end or outside linebacker and his ability to play the run, among the best in the country.

They’re skilled enough to be first-round picks. Unfortunately, not only is the draft impossible to predict, but they’re in circumstances that could cause each to fall out of the first round.

Cosmi is among a very deep offensive tackle draft. Penei Sewell, Rashawn Slater, Christian Darrisaw, Jaylen Mayfield, Alex Leatherwood, Liam Eichenberg and Teven Jenkins are first-round worthy offensive lineman.

In drafts that are deep with premium players in a position, players who would normally get picked higher end up falling in the draft to the next day. Teams instead opt to take first-round talent at positions that are not nearly as deep.

For example, Texas ex Connor Williams was thought to be among the best overall offensive lineman in the 2017 NFL draft. That draft included other tackle prospects Mike McGlinchey and Kolton Miller. Williams fell to the 50th overall selection in the second round.

It benefits Ossai, but also hurts him, to be in a draft class without an elite edge rusher prospect. There’s no Myles Garrett or Chase Young in this draft that teams are confident will be a star.

The most common names talked about at the position are Azeez Ojulari, Gregory Rousseau and Kwity Paye. None is being talked about consistently as top 10 overall draft pick and there’s no clear No. 1 edge.

It’s helpful because edge rusher is a premium position that’s continuously getting drafted higher than others. It’s one of the highest regarded in the game.

The issue is this year’s draft class of edge rushers reminds me a bit of the 2013 NFL draft. The best edge rusher that year was Ezekiel Ansah in what was overall a disappointing draft for the position.

Ossai could end up taken in the first round, if nothing else, for his position flexibility. It’s not a great draft for teams looking for players to get sacks, but Ossai’s ability to go from playing in a two-point stance to a three-point stance could be enough for a team to take a chance, even if it’s not in the first round.

Cosmi and Ossai are each worthy of first round grades, but it appears the draft may not play out in their favor.

So who all is expected to participate in the pro day?

Ehlinger, Cosmi, Eagles, Ossai, TQ, Sterns, CBrown...am I missing anyone? I think in the past we've had players from previous years who were still giving it a go participate. We had Ash come back and throw one year but that isn't necessary with a qb prospect already involved.

Or it might. Probably depends more on who gets taken in the top half of the draft and how much  the teams picking late like them since they won't be there at the back of the 2nd round.

Great point... Could be better for Cosmi and Ossai to get drafted late in the 1st Rd if they go to great organizations...

BR actually put together a really impressive group of scouts to grade prospects on a scale of 1-10 and put together the top 100. I’m on mobile so I can’t spoiler it, but I’ll post the link below.

Cosmi is ranked 44th and Ossai 50th. They listed Ossai as the best run stopper of the edge defenders, which I think is correct. Cosmi will need to test really well and Ossai will need a really good 3 cone time to go in the first round. Ossai may also just have a team fall in love with his character and leadership and take him in the first.

NFL QB sleeper getting some run as Top 5 pocket passer entering this year's NFL Draft...  DAVIS MILLS -- Stanford

Projected to be 5th or 6th QB taken.... probably 3rd or 4th Rd.

Ossai's motor on the football field should move him into the 1st Round.  Joseph's a damn winner!!! 🤘

Yeah, I don’t see any way that Ossai won’t be a productive NFL player for a long time, but he’s not an athletic freak and he doesn’t have that quick twitch a lot of teams want in their first round picks, so he may slide even though he’ll likely be better than guys picked ahead of him.

Hopefully since Joseph plays the run a lot better than most rush DE's, teams are him as more valuable because he will be able to play more downs than other DE's...

I’m sure they take his run D into account, but his problem is he’s not really an elite pass rusher.  Guys going in the first round will not be coming off the field for run plays, and the run game has never been less important to teams than it is right now.

Still using Pro Days in place of the NFL Combine...

"The NFL listed all 323 players who have been invited to compete in this year's modified scouting combine.   As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional scouting combine has been canceled. Instead, eligible draftees will work out at their school's pro day and stage virtual interviews with interested teams."

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Jets, Panthers swap top-10 picks and both land QBs, Eagles and Packers get receivers

By Pete Prisco     Mar 9, 2021

My second mock draft this year includes one trade — and it's near the top.

I have the New York Jets moving down from the second spot in a trade with the Carolina Panthers. The Jets would get the eighth overall pick, a first-rounder next year and a third this year to move down six spots.  Carolina would make the move to go up and get BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, who would seem to be a great fit in their system with Joe Brady. In this scenario, I have the Jets taking Justin Fields with the eighth pick, while they also could keep Sam Darnold. They would play Darnold for the year and then let Fields take over. Or they could trade Darnold and get extra picks.

The Jets have options. I would play Darnold and not draft a quarterback with the eighth pick, but this is a mock — not something I would do. So, for now, I have the Jets taking Fields with the eighth pick. The move up would be a bold move for Carolina, but if Wilson is who many scouts think he is as a quarterback, it would make sense.

One thing that didn't change in my mock, and won't going forward, is the emphasis on offensive players at the top. I will be shocked if more than two defensive players are among the first 10 players drafted.

So expect an early emphasis on offense, with offensive players going 1-8 in this mock. That won't change either.   My next mock will be after free agency, so there should be a better picture of what teams need. Until then, get angry about this one.  I know you will.
