I'm with ya on Jake.  Don't expect him to be an AA next year but do think he has more untapped potential than Moore.  Jake is the best route runner on the team, perhaps even faster than Moore (his words), and can actually create separation.

Is he though?

IMO, yes, and it's not even close.  Who would you put up against him?

I'm hardly a WR evaluation expert, but it seems to me the best route runner, fastest WR on the team, and "guy who can create separation" wouldn't pull complete-game disappearing acts where he never seemed to be very open at any point.

What the fuck am I reading about Jake Smith being someone who can get separation and run great routes? Is this real life? Holy shit.

It's irrelevant anyway. If Jake Smith doesn't drop 15 pounds, get his quickness back, and figure out how to actually consistently catch the ball, he'll be dropped through a trap door this spring.

I get where you're coming from.  I expected a lot more from him.  I'm no expert either, but I've seen him run routes that no-one else has (dig route).  Moore and perhaps Washington are as good or better route runners but the number/diversity of routes I've seen from them was very limited compared to Jake's.

Who would you say on this team consistently created separation.  I'll hang up and listen.

Yeah Smith seems like the perfect example of the Herman/Yancy "overbulking" of players that's been alluded to. I fully expect him to slim back down and be a better player because of it.

2021 Recruiting Class: Meet the Longhorns early enrollees

January 24, 2021

The Longhorns 2021 recruiting cycle will finish next week after the second signing day period. A portion of the 2021 class has already started arriving on campus in Austin. Nine of the 21 signees have started getting accustomed to the Forty Acres.

The current class is ranked No. 17 according to 247Sports composite rankings. While these players originally signed to play for Tom Herman, they will have a new head coach and staff to get accustomed to. It will be an interesting dynamic with Steve Sarkisian running the show for the burnt orange, but many are hopeful for the future of Texas’ football program.

Here are the full nine early enrollees:

  • JD Coffey, Safety: Kennedale  Height  6-0.5  Weight 180
  • Jamier Johnson, CB: John Muir (CA). Height 6-0   Weight 170
  • Derrick Harris Jr, DE: New Caney Height 6-2.5  Weight 215
  • Terrence Cooks, LB: Shadow Creek Height 6-2   Weight 210
  • Jaden Alexis, WR: Monarch (FL) Height. 5-11  Weight. 185
  • Hayden Conner, OT: Taylor (Katy) Height  6-5.5  Weight. 317
  • Gunnar Helm, TE: Cherry Creek (CO)  Height 6-5  Weight 225
  • Charles Wright, QB: Austin High  Height. 6-1  Weight. 194
  • Isaac Pearson, P: Pro Kick Australia. Height 6-2    Weight 215

The Longhorns social media department recently put together a video of the early enrollees arriving to campus.

Looking at Charles Wright's hudl, he actually seems like a really good eval and a good fit for Sark's system. He has a fast release, can throw from multiple angles, and he is accurate. The last 3 star QB we had with similar qualities seemed like he turned out ok.

Why would I say that there is one and what does that have to do with the point you attempted to insert, which was that Jake Smith actually did get separation?

Do you know what a red herring is? I'll stay online with bated breath.

Ok,  Jake Smith never, ever once created separation.  You're right.  He's the least separation creator on the team.  Go ahead and dodge the question I asked because it's not relevant to your conversation.

He's a big kid, too. And I'm guessing he's used to being hit playing behind that line.

That famous play where he dropped the critical 3rd down pass, he made just a stupid good spin move on the snag route iirc to get wide the fuck open. Then he dropped the pass of course.

Good lord, this doesn't even look like it's worth the fucking minor effort.

Your rhetorical shit is weak and you post all retarded. I didn't say anything of the sort around Smith being "the least separation creator on the team", nor did I imply it. You took the challenge of someone calling out the premise that he actually got regular separation, which he didn't get in 2020, and chose to respond first with a red herring by trying to redirect the conversation with a new premise, unrelated to the original issue. That bullshit maneuver got called on you, so you then respond with hyperbole, which is akin to name-calling in a conversation when you've lost leverage of the logical direction and need to yet again redirect. At the same time, you also bitched that the other poster somehow lacks merit in their position because they had the temerity to ignore your original bullshit tactic in the first place.

Do yourself a favor and just admit that you like Jake Smith because ... reasons, and that you don't have a fucking clue when it comes to evaluating separation or route running and that you used those terms because you hear them when people talk about WRs and you thought it would legitimize your take about Smith being a potential 2021 All-American. (Also, Jake Smith as a 2021 All-American - HOLY FUCKING SHIT!)

Or maybe you could show up with proofpoints that we can buy into around his great route running and separation skills. I watched a guy that was actually criticized by announcers for shitty route running this season, who was rarely open except in either blown coverage or broken plays. Maybe I missed some shit and his banana routes were drawn up by Herman and Yurcich and it was all on purpose.

Lolz.  You're something else.  I had to bold it for you in case you missed your hypocrisy.  And, you're asking for "proofpoints".  OMFG, you do the work..

Let me break it down for you.  Conversation started as AA candidates and Moore's name popped up.  I brought up Jake's untapped potential.  I did not take the "challenge of someone calling out the premise that he actually got regular separation".  I asked who on the team consistently creates separation, not implying he does.  Ya know, to show me who's potentially better at running routes.

So, I'll ask you again but make it easier for you:  who on this team has shown the ability to create separation at a college level?  Let's start there.  Or, you can just resort to name calling and hypocrisy.

You lost an argument and tried to change the topic of conversation. That's the whole "red herring" thing that ctj cited. Take the L so we don't have to watch this incredibly lame internet ass kicking continue, as he's too stubborn not to post like five hundred five-dollar words calling you stupid.

Oh, it’s broken down alright. I knew it wasn’t worth my time. I don’t owe you shit regarding your mouthbreather question as it wasn’t what I engaged on in the first place. It’s clear the premise of a red herring is lost on you and I can’t, in good faith, engage in actual football dialogue with someone that posts wearing clown makeup from a padded room.

Cool, you win.  Congratulations!  Your time must be very, very valuable spending it here.  Send me an invoice for your services and carry on.  I'll take the L if it means I no longer have to wallow in mud with you.

Don't even bother, that's his shtick when he doesn't know the answer. He resorts to name calling and trying to turn the conversation around. He's a narcissistic sociopath who projects.

I thought that was called "moving the goalposts," though? A "red herring" is when you put information in intended to mislead someone down a wrong path.

I thought that was called "moving the goalposts," though? A "red herring" is when you put information in intended to mislead someone down a wrong path.

Like when you put your mistress' blood-soaked cocktail dress in the trunk of your business partner's BMW.

Jake Smith being praised for getting separation? Someone post a clip from the 2019 TCU game where he ran his route, I will call it a “curl” right into the defender who was in zone coverage thus resulting in an interception. I’d never seen a receiver so drawn to a defender standing flat footed in zone coverage.
