Burton: Real Meetings Begin

IIT Staff.   Feb 11, 2021

We can point to yesterday and say that’s when it really began. Because yesterday, with Steve Sarkisian at the helm, the Texas football coaches, team and support staff were finally able to meet together in person for the very first time.

Not on Zoom. In person.

Yes workouts had been going on beforehand. And yes coaches had met with some players.

But yesterday was the actual day when there was a bona fide team meeting.

I’m told the team met together with Steve Sarkisian laying out his expectations for the team and officially introducing his coaches. Then the team broke into groups of offense and defense and had a team dinner together.

We’re still working on what was said in the meeting.

Eric will have more details tomorrow as we’re able to talk to some more folks.

I spent the last couple of days thinking about OU and comparing their starting lineup to that of Texas.

My question boiled down to this:

How many players on the Texas offense would start at OU?

Truth is, beyond Bijan Robinson, there is no single Longhorn that would be a sure-fire starter for the Sooners.

Yet Texas stacks up fairly well across the board.

I had the preconception that the Sooners’ receivers were much better than the Horns. And while the Okies definitely are better, a grouping of Jake Smith, Jordan Whittington, Troy Omeire and Josh Moore is no slouch. Don’t get me wrong the Sooners have an excellent group of pass catchers. But the Horns have a pretty good group returning, too.

At tight end/h-back, OU’s Austin Stogner as a pass catcher is a clear winner over his Texas alternative. But Jared Wiley is likely a future pro himself. Maybe the biggest difference is how the Sooners will deploy Mikey Henderson next season as H-back. He was tremendous as the season wore on.

At quarterback, Spencer Rattler certainly would be given the edge over either Casey Thompson or Hudson Card. But Rattler is far from perfect. He’s definitely not in the same category as Kyler Murray, at least not yet.

So that leaves the offensive line. Texas loses one starter, Sam Cosmi, and possibly a second, Derek Kerstetter, who has still yet to announce his intentions for 2021.

Cosmi is a big loss for Texas. But so are four-year starter Creed Humphrey at center and Adrian Ealy at tackle for the Sooners. The Sooners will likely start three seniors on the OL next season and two sophomores.

Texas meanwhile could start as many as three sophomores - Jake Majors, Andrej Karic and Tyler Johnson. And that doesn’t include Isaiah Hookfin, also a sophomore, who could challenge for a role at multiple positions.

In all, the Sooners are more talented than Texas on offense. They’re also more experienced, specifically at QB. But the biggest difference is likely on the offensive line, where the Sooners’ depth and talent is a big difference maker.

Texas needs to beat OU in October. On paper, that looks tough. But games aren’t played on paper.

TARS to the rescue... Thx @Machinator

Quote

- As the Texas staff has gotten to work in recruiting in 2022 and 2023, prospects and coaches are starting to formulate their opinions of the new direction of the Texas program under Steve Sarkisian. A name I've heard a good amount about is safeties coach Blake Gideon. As I reported earlier this week, Gideon is hot in pursuit of the state's top two safeties Bryan Allen Jr. and Bryce Anderson. There's an energetic aura about Gideon that is impressing these guys as he's worked close with newly-hired cornerbacks coach and pass game coordinator Terry Joseph. These two have started their working relationship off on the right path and have conjoined to recruit some of the biggest secondary names in the state for the 2022 class.

- Since coming onto campus, defensive line coach Bo Davis has been busy handing out offers in 2022 and 2023. In talking to a head coach of a recently offered recruit, Davis has done a good job in relating with his player and is already working towards improving his weaknesses. "You can tell (Davis) really cares about his well-being and wants him to succeed no matter where he goes." In a room with a lot of top talent, Davis seems to be the relationship-building type, so expect the d-line group to be one of the closest knit on the team and one of the most competitive.

- When the entirety of the new staff was announced, arguably the most exciting hire with the Texas fanbase was offensive line coach Kyle Flood. Since arriving, he has gone to work in the 2022 class after inheriting a lackluster 2021 group. In talking to multiple recruits, Flood is "all business" and has done a good job conveying what the Texas offense is going to look like. I asked if the all business approach was off-putting in any way to one recruit and that was met with a firm "not at all." While there is still work to be done, Flood has put Texas back in the conversation with multiple top-tier offensive linemen in the 2022 class.

WHAT I KNOW ON NCAA DEAD PERIOD EXTENSION

Reports surfaced earlier today that the Division I Football Oversight Committee recommended to the NCAA to extend the recruiting dead period through May 31. The Division I Council will decide on the recommendation at a Feb. 17 meeting.

I talked to a recruit today who had an SEC head coach tell him that he expects the dead period to be extended to May 31, and that it is of the understanding that it will not be extended beyond that.

The Division I Council enacted the emergency recruiting dead period back on March 13, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has since extended the end date four times. It currently is set to expire on April 15 pending the Feb. 17 Division I Council meeting.

I can literally run just like that dude, you baby giraffe. My littlest boy enjoys acting like he's Sonic and he runs like that and always makes me do it with him. Plus, been doing the US3 with the others while you're holed up in the north Heights, oiling up your choad and burping out potato chip and PBR breath by noon each day.
We can think of the Surly Sprint-off on September 4th, 2021, as a bit of a medley of racing and track competitions, I guess. Beyond the 100 yard flat out furious sprint-off, I'd do a 40 yard Sonic Sprint against you fuckers. We could also mix in some midget tossing, an office chair hammer-esque throw, and a broad jump in which we stack dead Shaggy servers on top of one another until only one person can successfully clear them for the title. Stuff like that, I think.
You guys can fuck around and find out. I'm already working on a sponsorship deal for the festivities.
Who is BBQing for this?

IT team notes

  Reveal hidden contents

*Offseason started to pick up this week with the first in-person gathering of the entire team and new coaches. The meeting also included breaking up into offense and defense and was capped by a team meal.

*Steve Sarkisian held court with his intent to deliver program expectations. He came across as serious yet genuine (sorry for the overuse of that word. We either hear he’s genuine, real, or some other variation saying the same thing).

*He spoke of the virtues he expected his program to have. It will be an accountable group that doesn’t whine, complain, or make excuses. At the same time, if they have an injury or something wrong, it’s their job to communicate those issues so they can be remedied. Don’t sulk without communicating what’s bothering you. The coaches are there for the players. You can see how he’d come across as serious, then personable.

*He preached maturity, professionalism, and the importance of communication. We’ve noticed he’s transparent in press conferences. As he’s said publicly, he’s also said privately: these are skills that help you in life that transfer over to the football field. If you do things right off the field, football will take care of itself.

*Known for his high-flying offense, he was much more interested in discussing how his team would be physical and how his team would be intimidating. Their opponents week to week would be faceless. There will be no big games to get up for because they consistently prepare the right way regardless of opponent. This will conjure shades of going 1-0 each week but this is simply time honored “focus on the task at hand” jargon.

*After Sarkisian spoke, Jeff Banks was welcomed to the stage. He preached the importance of special teams and how each player will be on at least two phases of special teams. He said special teams plays a major role in team mindset, mental toughness, and identity.

*The team then broke up into offense and defense and met with coordinators and then position coaches.

*On Friday (today) players will begin working on the basics of install. As we reported last week, the defensive staff doesn’t want to start from scratch, more so they’d like to build on what’s in place. This extends to personnel, at least in the beginning. We haven’t heard of any major changes yet, i.e., Chris Adimora is still at nickel (at least for the time being). This is just a logical starting point and nothing should be read into how things will look by the end of spring ball.

*With the defensive front being multiple, there are effectively three positions to coach: Jack/X OLB, interior d-line, and defensive end. The X is basically the Jack at the other end of the line to the boundary. Jacoby Jones has been working with the Jacks/X’s.

*There remains a ton of excitement within the program, but that’s not just centered around the new staff. These guys want to get back to football in general. There’s a team-wide sense of ”spring football can’t get here fast enough.”

If I see Bijan play a single down on special teams (other than possibly kick return) I will fucking lose it

Spoiler

Some small off-field administration news here.

I’m hearing that Taylor Searels, the daughter of former Texas offensive line coach and currently working in the recruiting office for Vanderbilt, is expected to become the Longhorns’ new director of on-campus recruiting. Searels would follow Texas’ new director of football operations Jason Grooms.

Additionally, I am told that Bobby Brown, a defensive quality control and recruiting specialist at North Carolina, is expected to become the assistant director of player personnel for the Horns.

Still no official word on who the new director of player personnel will be.

In a perfect world, Sark would have done everything he could to keep BC. (He may have; who knows?) Dress it up any way you want, Carrington's going to SC  to recruit. We're going to miss him a hell of a lot. You can point to all the rainmaking coaches we hired, but why not couple them with a proven off-the-field guy like BC? Hate to lose him.
As long as Helton is still running the ship it wont make much diff in our recruiting efforts, SC will pull in a few top west coast kids no matter how badly they suck. But as someone already mentioned, might have a few more portalers headed west.

not saying it doesn't happen, it's just that it's pretty rare to be successful for those who haven't played college ball like Seth and Rashaad have. I know Mike Leach did it but I'm not sure that many others have.
Forget position coaches, there are numerous head coaches past and present who never played other than Leach. Off the top of my head, Sonny Dykes, George O'leary, Coach Fran..and I know at least one long time Texas HS coach (hall of famer but name escapes me) that didnt play football at any level.

Of course that doesnt mean Carrington is going to rise to the top of the profession, but if he puts in the same time and effort he does recruiting, it will work fine. Think he played in HS, some on the never played list didnt even do that

So Burton says on paper blOU has a better 2021 Roster than TEXAS -- wonder if that will be mentioned much next Oct prior to the game at the Cotton Bowl by 9.95er's ??

That's an interesting consideration. I wouldn't necessarily think differently right now. But the vast majority of positions are close enough they could flip after next year. Even if Bijan is the only Horn you'd choose, you'd have him as the #1 player overall in many cases with really Rattler being the only option.

I would take our players on defense any day over ou’s.  ou’s defense is shittastic.  No dL, no lbs, shitty secondary.

Their offense definitely has higher rated players but it’s not like we are Baylor.  This Texas offense has plenty of highly rated recruits on paper.  Let’s see if Sark can get them to produce.  There might be 5-6 teams that have out recruited us on offense the last 4 years.

Lol someone has no clue what they’re talking about. OU’s defense was better than ours by a good bit last year. Losing Perkins will hurt for them but they have some good talent in the pipeline on defense now. The days of them being a tire fire on defense are gone.
