87th Texas Legislature

StassneyHorn

Recommended Posts

Topic for the 87th Texas Legislature. Goes from January through May.

House has made Dade Phelan Speaker. Brian Birdwell is Senate President.

The Senate at the LT. Gov’s request moved from 2/3 majority to 3/5 majority in 2015 to bring up bills w/o Democrats objection and they now requires 5/9 majority as of yesterday. Republicans have exactly 18/31 senators so they have ability to bring any legislation they want up for a vote if they decide.

Thread will most likely consist of Patrick Svitek, Scott Braddock, Jeremy Wallace and Evan Smith tweets, news columns, or Texas Take podcasts. And of course any discussion.

Ken Paxton is circling the drain. Middle finger emoji

I’m about 95% sure US House Rep Roger Williams TX-25 is here at Lavaca Street Bar on South Lamar right now if anyone wants to give him bad looks from a responsible social distance.
Go punch him in the cunt.

Legislature remains mostly white and male still. I usually shy away from posting stories or breakdowns that are geared towards “white is bad” twitter hot takes because I think a good Rep or Senator can have their pulse on their district, but when Hispanics are going to be the majority soon and still remain firmly a political minority it’s weird. With women it’s worse. The hiccups with the census and redistricting having to happen this session will be a constant story.

I see Patrick was able once again successfully reduce the number of senators required to allow a floor vote from 19 to 18. That's the 2nd time in 6 years the GOP has reduced the requirements.

Fuck the Texas GOP

Yea Patrick is doing everything possible to make things hyperpartisan as usual if the party decides to act as one. His committee chair assignments were to be expected, while the House continued to be more “bipartisan” for major assignments.  It’s almost always reverse in regards to House and Senate so Texas really bucks the trend in that regard. My eyes are on Lucio and if he bails out any Republican “defector” in the Senate.

State Senator Joan Huffman is the head of the Senate Redistricting committee. I haven’t kept up with her and her office as much as I wish I had after I finished working there as a dickhead college student, but everyone in the office at the time I was there were “sane” Republicans. Couple of times the chief of staff would comment “he was a tea party loon” after interviews and always had a good laugh about it. I know her husband got into some trouble for a bit, regardless she will definitely be a team player for redistricting as her last election was within 5% and she’ll try to shore things up.

how much will ercot/grid failure derail this session

Not at all. It's not an issue unless there is an unprecedented event. Only poor's and people of color died, you know the kinds of people the state reps want dead anyway so they can't vote. Basically this is a net positive for them, they may double down and put protections in place for ERCOT to kill even more people instead.

Bunch of incompetent fuckheads in our local, state and federal government now and I'm planning on doing something about it in the near term. People are begging for actual representation and all they get is corporate person hood overwhelmingly fucking them over.

Strengthening our state's energy and water infrastructure for a Texas that every single fucking year experiences extreme cold, extreme heat, drought, flood, hurricane, tornado, and wildfire?   NAH, we gotta get more God in the classroom and rid ourselves of cancel culture.  That's what Texans demand!

Scott Braddock and Jeff Leach Twitter slap fights are fun. Jeff Leach has HB19 to limit trucking company liabilities, said there is huge flaws in his bill, but does not have a final version, but wants his committee to vote on it next week.

Yea Sands and the ghost of Sheldon Addelson have thrown quite a bit of money into the Lege this year for casinos.

Corporate casinos suck and Galveston does not need them. What they do need to do is bring back illegal gambling and high quality bordellos.

They are going to fuck over all counties with that bill.  Rural counties use central early voting locations just like urban counties do.  It’s not because of demand but because they have trouble staffing multiple early voting locations.

Making a minor girl listen to the heartbeat of the resulting fetus from a rape or incestual trauma caused by a family member, coach, mentor, priest/pastor, or community elder?  I can't believe nobody thought of this before, what a great fucking idea.

Hughes has said he will remove language for proof of disability. My chronically hurt feelings that prevent me from standing in the sun are a little better now.

They are pissing off a lot of young women, actually just women in general.

Let them fuck around and find out.

I'll support the bill wholeheartedly if it comes with the caveat that the rapist or incest monster has his identity revealed to the public.  Texans are gonna have a hard time wrapping their heads around how many Baptist, Catholic, Teacher/Coach, community mentor molesters and assaulters there are in their little towns.

What's that you say?... We can't have the young lady defame the reputation of someone who could be innocent?  Well, if she has to hear the ACTUAL heartbeat of the ACTUAL FETUS that is ACTUALLY insider her, some of y'all are gonna have to ACTUALLY hear some disturbing shit as well about your beloved local male role model.  You focus so fucking much on how many fetuses are aborted each year by victims of rape and incest and you never stop to question who is doing all the raping and incest.  How are you Baptists so small?

For the record, I'm privately against abortion except for incest, rape, and motherly harm but I want it kept legal because it ain't my fucking business.
