Is Deshaun Watson Done in Houston?

Lance Zierlein and whoever his NFL sources are seem to think the most likely scenario is Deshaun playing for Houston. Supposedly Dolphins leadership is Belichick enough to not offer much for the Tua-to-Watson upgrade; maybe #18 this year and their 2022 first plus to Tua, but not the #3, #36, or a third first rounder. He says Deshaun likely won’t approve a trade to the Jets regardless due to not liking the owner and his politics, but especially not if they lose a shit ton of talent and draft stock to get him. Carolina and Atlanta likely won’t offer much more than Miami and their 2021 picks aren’t high enough to get the Texans in a position to pick their favorite non-Trevor Lawrence QB. Patriots, Steelers, Saints, etc. don’t have a great pick this year and future years’ pick would be worse with Deshaun.

If the Texans play hardball and Watson doesn’t report, they can get the signing bonus back and not pay him His base rate per game, greatly helping their cap position. And if they are shitty without him, their pick in 2022 will be better. There is unsubstantiated chatter that Deshaun’s agent (who also reps Jalen Ramsey and another player who forced a trade) negotiated Watson’s contract extension in bad faith. As has happened in other trades in the past, Deshaun has cashed a huge signing bonus from the Texans and may argue to his next team that his annual base pay is below market rate and needs a raise (double dipping). A lot of the undisclosed sources chatter coming from Watson’s camp was that he wanted input but he also wanted a black GM and coach to be strongly considered. They did hire their Patriot infatuation at GM, but they ended up hiring black HC, DC, QB, and WR coaches. So Watson’s central complaint on which the Texans’ future hinges is about whether they consulted their QB on their GM hire? It may be a lot of smoke and bullshit, but there could be a strategy to fight back at Watson in the PR war if they don’t get a high value trade offer, and Watson won’t increase the number of teams he’d waive his no-trade clause for, and Watson holds out.

Why the Dolphins? They've invested in Tua and he's shown promise. Serious question. The Jets for sure, but what about Pittsburgh? I don't know their cap or if they could take his contract, but Ben has to be retiring soon. Or maybe even NYG?

Big Ben still has like 2 years left on his deal. He signed a 2 year extension last year. He wants to come back he said. At some point, they need to find someone. Not sure if Rudolph is that guy (I doubt it). But they definitely have talent at WR. Watson would add a great dynamic to that offense. They are looking to win right now and not wanting to build. If you think Watson can help you win right now and no drop at off at all, then you make the move and give up the picks. But you have to be sure because he comes with a big contract and you are giving up a lot of draft capital. But QB is the most important and its such a crap shoot to find one.

One team that that makes me wonder is Cleveland. They have a lot of young talent. Baker is servicable and does not suck but Cleveland can be a legit contender with a better QB. Baker holds back that offense and isn't consistent. But I don't see them giving up that much as Houston would want.

Ugh.  That's a pollyanna view.  Could it happen?  Sure.  Is it most likely to happen?  No.  He has a tight window to be moved before his extension kicks in and it gets really ugly.  I'm gonna guess he's traded before then.  If not, then sure this thing can wade into TC or even next year, but the Texans should be ready for agent and UFA blowback, a lot of Watson "soft tissue injuries" and general criticism from media all around.  These situations rarely find their way back, but maybe the new HC can get a meeting and win him over..... I wouldn't run to Vegas on it.

That whole race thing could be true, but kind of seems like an overblown smear campaign by the Texans. Deshaun played for a white HC in high school, chose to play for white HC in college, and played his ass off for a pretty shitty white HC in the NFL his first few seasons. Seems odd that out of nowhere that would be this huge dealbreaker to him, and not the fact that he has no talent around him & the organization makes no attempts at improving.

The truth is the Texans are a trash organization through and through. They literally fired their universally loved PR director for a tweet congratulating Joe Biden. How often do you see sports media personalities all express utter shock that a PR director was fired?

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported sources said Palcic was told she no longer was "a cultural fit" in the organization.

That fired up Blue Check Marks all over Twitter.

"If Amy Palcic isn’t a 'cultural fit,' then the Texans’ culture is absolutely rancid," tweeted ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

Charean Williams, former president of Pro Football Writers of America, tweeted: "The Texans have turned into one of the worst organizations in football since Bob McNair died. @amypalcic was the best. She certainly was too good for what the Texans deserve."

Former NFL receiver Donte Stallworth, who played for the Cleveland Browns in 2008 when Palcic was the team's director of communications, tweeted: "The BS 'cultural fit' the @HoustonTexans are talking about is that Amy cares more for the players than the organization does. Anyone in the NFL knows she’s one of the best at her job, hence the Texans couldn’t cite her performance, but bad organizations always find a way to lose."

"I think you can tell from the universal response from prominent people in the business what type of person Amy is and how well-respected and well-liked she is, both inside of our building and outside the building," Watt said during a Zoom call with the media Wednesday. "Extremely professional. Just really good at her job. Cared a lot. Just wants what’s best for the team and what’s best for the organization. Always trying to do what’s best and was a massive helping hand with me during the hurricane and during my entire time here. I think it's a very difficult loss. She’s an incredible person and I think she’s going have another job in an absolute heartbeat."

NBC Sports' Peter King tweeted: "This is a stunning move. Stunning. @amypalcic is one of the best media-relations people I’ve met in  my 36 years covering the NFL. Top 5."

Former ESPN writer Darren Rovell tweeted: "No joke, @amypalcic is literally one of the best PR people in the world.  The relationship she has with her players is virtually unprecedented. Truth is, her being there hurts her brand much more. Won't be on the market for long."

ESPN's Field Yates tweeted: "So, the Texans fire their PR director @amypalcic because she isn’t a 'cultural fit' and countless reporters - who a PR director’s job is to work with daily - take to Twitter to express how terrific she is at her job. If she doesn’t fit, what kind of culture do the Texans want?"

Former Sports Illustrated writer and noted author Michael Silver tweeted: "Given that @amypalcic is great at her job, and it's early November, this ranks right up there with organizationally pathetic transactions."

USA Today's Mike Freeman tweeted: "So, to be clear, @amypalcic is one of the most talented, dedicated and smart PR people I’ve ever known. Whoever hires her next will get the very best." Freeman also added: "Deshaun Watson needs to get the hell outta there."

NFL insider Matt Miller tweeted: "Disgraceful. Amy is amazing. What are the Texans doing?"

NFL Network's Stacey Dales tweeted: "This move is horrifying. Amy Palcic is a gem, to each and every one of us who covers the league."

All this bullshit about Deshaun wanting a black GM is inanity and mostly reported from people whom have absolutely no relationship with Deshaun or his agent (who is a Texas Ex by the way). My guess is that eventually cooler heads will prevail and Deshaun won't go anywhere, but if he wants to let them stew a little bit yall shouldn't begrudge him at all.

It's stupid either way.  Successful organizations get WAY the fuck past political differences.   Some even leverage them...

Regardless, the Texans ain't that...they need to be broadening their hiring pool, not cutting it in half.

The City of Houston should have pitchforks going after Cal McNair years ago but all those bitch ass pussies could do was whine and cry about BOB.  keep selling out NRG and buying merchandise.

Fuck them all right in their stupid faces.

Fify.

No matter what, tickets kept selling, jerseys kept being bought, and the McNairs keep seeing the money roll in and know it doesn't matter.  Houston loves football and for every fan that says they won't go to another game, there's 10 morons ready to buy those tickets.

There is also something to be said for Houston being a big transplant city. Other teams’ fans are always well represented here.

Mostly agree about outcome, but the reality of taking a subpar trade value for a QB talent like Watson and assuming the immediate $22M signing bonus hit on the 2021 cap that is expected to decrease to $175-180M isn’t very Pollyanna IMO.

Deshaun has cultivated a very positive image as a leader and role model, and the thinking is he won’t want to tarnish his reputation in ways such as “soft tissue injury” Kawhi or “fat suit” Harden (as a person, not a player). Both of those guys are still considered all pro top 5 players but they are also less likeable to most fans.

The other thing is how the NFL wants to enforce honoring of contracts, especially in light of the new CBA that forbids holdouts. A player can negotiate an extension of his free will that includes signing bonus money, guaranteed money, and even a no trade clause, all of which Deshaun did. If he wants out so bad, why not start by offering to terminate the extension and give back the signing bonus? The Texans showed contractual commitment. The other argument of “the team sucks and doesn’t do anything to help him” is bullshit. They tried (poorly) to help him by mortgaging their draft future to get him one of the best LT’s in his prime, and acquired RBs that are dual threat. It got them to a lead against eventual SB champ KC in the playoff last year. The wheels fell off after the shitty Hopkins trade, but even that was done partially for cap flexibility to resign Watson and Tunsil and knowing the 2021 cap was decreasing. Watson signed the extension after the unloading of draft capital and after the Hopkins trade.

The situation is a mess. The Texans made bad trades. They shouldn’t have hired Easterby and should fire him yesterday. Ultimately they hired the GM they’ve coveted for two years, way before any of the Watson drama and even before they hired Easterby, who was kind of like the Caserio appetizer. Again, if Deshaun wants out bad enough and won’t annul the signing bonus and guaranteed money, he should waive his no trade clause so the franchise can maximize trade value. They won’t get it if his approved teams list is limited to Miami, Carolina, Atlanta, and SF and all their teams know it.

He's much easier to trade this year than next when his cap hit for a receiving team goes up to 35 million from about 10m this year.  In other words, the economics of his contract makes it, its own poison pill or artificial no trade clause.  Why have an unhappy asset who could easily decide to protect himself from injury until he's traded.  I get it, you're probably a fan and looking for possible solutions or the best way out of this mess, but as most examples will show you, the walls close in on you and the way out is to trade a distressed asset for cents on the dollar.  You can still do well if you work objectively, quickly, and wisely, but the Texans are most likely not going to do well in this transaction because you have many of the same awful players who put you in this mess, still making the decisions.

Watson is most likely going to leave and sooner than later, how and how well the Texans do will come from how quickly the come to terms with it and how well they work the phones in finding the best deal.  Let the NBA show you the way.  Kawhi's career really didn't see much, if any, but temporary blowback with his situation.  Same with Anthony Davis, same with James Harden, etc, etc, etc.  I doubt Watson's "image" is going to be hurt very much, even if this gets ugly, because the Texans are so mismanaged and frankly, crazy, that the narrative has been already largely written.....  in short, unless they can pull off a miracle (religious or otherwise), they'll be forced to trade him and he'll never be part of the Texans future again.

Add that to Favre's own drama in GB and he is being a hypocrite on this.

And FTR, DW signed the new contract with with Cal, Esterby and BoB, so he knew exactly what he was getting into. He's not an innocent victim in this.

Just because you do not remember does not change reality. He received a lot of backlash from players, fans and coaches. It did not cost him any money because he played. This will only cost Watson if he refuses to play which of course is his choice. He is free to do whatever he likes but like anyone else is not free of financial consequence or free from criticism.

Even in your bizarre Favre analogy you fail to point out that when he retired initially he forfeited the right to his compensation.

He wasn't under contract. Doesn't mean it wasn't a bitch move, but it's not like he signed for 100+ million and THEN told SD he wasn't playing there.

When NFL contracts are guaranteed we can talk about this argument but until then being under contract means jack shit in the NFL. How can a contract that is only binding for one side matter?

You can get one, but for less years and total money. Kirk Cousins got one. But they know they deal before they sign, it shouldn't take them by surprise. Roll the dice for a chance of a multi-million dollar salary or take a regular job like the rest of us chumps.

Name me one HOF that came out against Eli.

Bizarre? He wasn't happy with the direction the Packers were going, drafting Rodgers among other things(sound familiar?) so he quit. Then came back and got traded. What money did he forfeit? When he was traded to the Jets, did he not play under his current contract?

It absolutely was a bitch move. No argument there. But the Giants didn't give him a low ball offer, even though they had more leverage. They made him whole as if he was any other draft choice.

Add that to Favre's own drama in GB and he is being a hypocrite on this.

And FTR, DW signed the new contract with with Cal, Esterby and BoB, so he knew exactly what he was getting into. He's not an innocent victim in this.

The Giants didn't have leverage. San Diego drafted Eli, who said he'd refuse to sign. He would've gone back into the draft next year and SD would've eaten that pick. So Eli had the leverage. The NYG wanted him, he wanted to go there. They made the trade and he signed with NY.

The real drama was from Phillip Rivers' agents. Because he got traded from 4th to 1st, they wanted him to be paid like the #1 pick.

It would be nice if you'd produce an article or news clip of this supposed backlash Eli received. I don't remember a single instance of it.
