Jen Psaki is Good at this Job

I had a meeting so I only caught part of the brief earlier today and only via ear buds, but I wondered if a pundit would comment on this section which I had the fortune to hear and Rupar came through. O'Donnell asks the same question I was howling over when the reporter (I think it was Kaitlin but not sure since I couldn't see) asked it. Psaki had to repeatedly answer a question about the refugee cap and handled that well, too.

Oh, and yes Mr. O'Donnell that is exactly what they think. Well, the dumb ones or the ones trying to 'gotcha' anyway.

She has had several recently. I was a little surprised because it was a 'come on really?' question. Psaki lays out a lot in her briefs, especially on Monday so there is no excuse for that. I was in and out, and when I resumed there were other reporters that were more on point and asking relevant questions about policy.

Welcome to the post-Trump standard of journalism/reporting. Biden doesn’t give them the material so they’re still scuffling.

it is weird. she was nails during the trump administration. but her "gotcha question" works on kayleigh, but not jen, because jen has her shit together. she needs to straighten up and fly right, and stop listening to producers telling her to get the juice. just get the facts.

This is sadly the truth.  Whether Democrats want to admit it or not---CNN, ABC, et. al. pivoted to be basically "What did Trump fuck up today?" news networks.  They wanted to grab the key demographics and they had to do that pivot.  My household, 35-44 demographic with post-graduate education in a decent zip code, went from watching 1 hour of cable news per week in 2017 to 2 hours of cable news per day in 2019.  And now we're back down to 1 hour per week plus a Sunday morning show.  Because while I think Biden has already fucked up a few things, I'm basically in "Let the janitor clean the lunchroom tonight and we'll come back tomorrow and chat about the issues over a meal." mode right now.

Even my monitoring of the old Republican Party is way down.  I was a voracious reader of National Review, American Standard, Cato, and AEI publications.  I stuck with them for awhile after the human tragedy that is President Trump really began his slouch towards insanity in 2018.  To see if they would abandon him and try to course-correct the principles of the party.  But nope.  Now, I don't bother with any of them except what is mandated by my AEI board seat.  Nobody is apologizing, nobody is trying to learn, nobody is trying to grow, nobody is trying to adapt, nobody is trying to look forward.  They're just marching in a circle around a cyclone of doom that's slowly taking away any original thought they once had.  I get the media doing it for ratings/money.  But I don't get why so many intellectuals are going down the drain voluntarily with them.

I was listening to a podcast recently, and the speaker was talking about how Trump and his cohort 'broke' them in a manner of speaking. Journalists were used to politicians lying or dodging around topics, but there were still rules (of democracy) and the blatant corruption, dissembling, and chaos was just not something American journos were used to or seemed to know how to handle. This seemed apparent if one read around in global sources. In addition, because Trump ran everything based as an entertainer/ratings hound the reporters, especially from television, chased those instead of the story or even the truth. His constant attacks on the media, his autocratic take down of the norms, the chaos, and then eventually the overarching attacks of propaganda (half the time the center based media and left based media were in a war of sorts with Fox) and cult left them for lack of a better phrase: suffering from PTSD.

They, if they want to have any self-respect, really really need to stop humoring the GOP and not have on politicians who are only for ratings or soundbites. It is not news.

All of those enablers that are still flying down to Florida and having 'chats' are going to be front and center in 2022 and 2024 when they make their move again. They have the map, we are (according to Ruth Ben Ghiat) now used to death (pandemic) and violence (more death via shootings and the insurrection) and they want us to lose hope. We must remember we defeated the tyrant once. But he and others like him are energized now, they have a cause and they feel they can succeed.

We, too, must energize, summon the strength to take to the streets once more, to volunteer, to campaign, to register voters and keep them engaged and focused. We may not have another chance.

Question about how important it is for Congress to pass the infrastructure bill with the green 'bits' in it given they will be going to Glasgow in November to sign the NDC. Answer is that it would be ideal but they have outlined other pathways (always have backup plans).

Oh, Jen, that was right over the plate. You have way more will power than I do, but damn.

Question about why the President will speak in person during the Joint Session next week, considering the pandemic and considering January 6th. Psaki discusses Biden's history in government and his respect for the institution and the importance of speaking with the people with whom they are working on behalf of Americans and they recognize that January 6th created a set of "unique factors." (and then continued on)

There, all the people maintaining that it wasn't an insurrection can hold tight to that diplomatic response. The insurrection was special, it was unique, just like them. (You might even say it was like a snowflake, but it was still an insurrection).

I don't recall the reporter. Normally she says their name, which is helpful esp. with the masks, but she had a lot to get through today and was pointing with her pen. It was a woman but I didn't recognize her. Biden will be speaking in person, and Psaki explained the President's viewpoint.

Like Blair Erskine or Sarah Cooper, Chelsea Pope has a 'bit.' Hers is Jen Psaki; back story--Psaki has been promoting a version of casual(?) Friday in the briefing room of a sorts and on Thursday she mentioned snacks for the pool reporters. On Friday, she provided home baked chocolate chip cookies which her MIL had made.

Did she say when next year?  And is it weird that Sarah Huckabee Sanders' family encourage to stay on as long as possible?  They even told her to just stay in D.C. after Biden won and just sort of hang out and see if she was needed.

I actually find her pretty annoying, but she would make Republican's heads explode, so I'd be ok with it.

VP Spokesperson to Press Secretary for POTUS is pretty common move.  Jay Carney made the move in 2011 after Gibbs moved on.

If not Sanders, Karine Jean-Pierre (current Deputy Press Secretary) would be great too - and would also make the GOP's head explode, she's young, black and a lesbian.

Is it wrong that I have fantasies about her coming home, kicking off her shoes, curled up on the couch sipping on a glass of wine, and telling me about all the dipshits she's destroyed during the day?

My “Dear Penthouse” letter reads differently.

Karine Jean-Pierre has been giving the audio briefs aboard AF1 when Biden flies to locations further afield (such as his recent trip to Louisiana). Her youth shows sometimes, she's learning how to push back when the line of questioning is stupid, and she's getting better with each one and if Psaki is mentoring her, between the two of them with their smarts, Jean-Pierre can step into the position w/o too much difficulty.

So your's starts off with "So I knocked on Ms. Psaki's door, and she opened it wearing nothing but a leather bikini and holding a cat o' nine tails.  She looked me up and down and said "my internet has been down all day, and somebody is going to have to be punished.""

Or something like that?

Asking for a friend.

Ok, actually, having watched this again, this is EXACTLY the response that should be given to most bullshit artists on the Right.  CALL THEM ON THEIR SHIT.  Bring their nonsense existence to the forefront.  This is a HUGE opportunity for actual news organizations to cut out their "competition".  I know a lot of people don't care, but surely some do.  Right?  Godammit.

Bwaahaha. I had to work today so missed the briefing and was catching up. Psaki had a good response to the inevitable Cheney question (first tweet) and the Daily Caller reporter got called out for doing essentially what Peter Doocy of Fox does all the time (uses another reporter's work). It is people like those two that led my children to opt out of group projects in school.

Click on the tweet below for the video embedded in the article--her response is pretty funny.

She absolutely owns them every fucking time; she's truly impressive and prepared.

The twitter trolls loathe her. It's a stressful job and sometimes she leans into the snark a little more than I like, but I can't say I'd be able to hold back any better when you've got some of the more obvious baiting questions being lobbed. The serious correspondents have asked some tough questions and she has side-stepped a few of those. I do like how this administration is making clear once more the boundaries between different branches of government and agencies. However, that doesn't mean when one is asked a direct administrative question that one can lob it over to an agency to buy time.

Lordy. Reporter (not sure of media outlet but likely a religious one or maybe Epoch Times?) asked a couple of questions relating to religious freedom, etc, then his final  question (I think he was going for a 'gotcha') was about how "Biden's plans were to help America's people but gas prices were so high and affect poor people the most and is the Administration going to do anything to lower gas prices?" I didn't get the sense that he was asking because he really cared to know about poor people and their troubles, but that may have just been his tone.

Ummmmm. Psaki was pretty kind. Discussed the various plans and how they work. Did not slap him back regarding the gas issue really.

My initial response was more like, "Excuse me sir, this is a Wendy's."

He's not wrong in the sense that the money comes in and then goes out and that burden falls disproportionately upon the poor, but the missing context of energy prices and how they are structured, and how our economic system works was a little cringe. "Hey mister, can I explain what real socialism looks like?"

Or am I off base and being too mean?
