TravelTalks by James Fitzpatrick

Anyone else enjoy watching the TravelTalk segments shown on TCM between feature movies?  These short "films/documentaries" were made from the 1930's thru the 1950's.  I find them very interesting as they feature places and people during a time when the world was a much larger place and in some sense still a mystery outside of your local area.  The films reflect the culture and time of the era before many of the cultures of the people was changed or adapted to more modern times.  It is a bit nostalgic to see how things were in a more "simple" time.  You will also find that some of the terminology used in the films are not always "politically correct".

I just ordered the 3-volume DVD set which contains 186 episodes.  Looking forward to viewing it.

I can almost smell the fresh popcorn in the little paper bag and feel the sticky stuff from spilled soft drinks on the soles of my Keds.  TravelTalk reminds me of the Saturday morning movies of my kid-dom (credit Jean Shepherd), complete with newsreels, Flash Gordon serial segments and best of all, full color cartoons.

Fitzpatrick's nasal voice and musical but monotone delivery start to grow on you after a while.  Totally agree with OP - the series provided a window to a world that seemed larger and so much more benign than this one, and in such brilliantly grainy color.

Bravo TCM for introducing TT to us and how appropriately, on Saturday mornings.

"Here we are in lovely Rio de Janeiro, playground of the globe, overseen by majestic Sugarloaf mountain and the 98-foot tall soapstone statue resting high atop 2,300 Corcovado mountain, Christ the Redeemer . . ."

I love those shorts. Especially enjoy seeing what the world looked like 90 years ago. Had no idea there was a DVD set.

Yep. Went online to look for videos to watch and came across the site. Ordered mine through Amazon and it will take just over a month for delivery. Must be printing on demand!
