Garage Door Opener

Recommended Posts

Our old Overhead opener is kaput.  It's probably 30 years old, so it had a good run.

I've browsed Lowes and HD.  Looking for recommendations on an opener for 1 garage door for a 2 car garage.  Wifi connectivity would be a plus to monitor the door remotely.  Chain, belt, all that shit.  I don't know what I'm doing.

I am not screwing around with installing this thing, so recs on that front would be great.

Thanks!

just had a new door and opener installed.  Has the "Q" system for wifi monitoring.

Until I got it, I wasn't aware that you can link your amazon account to the opener, and amazon will deliver your shit inside your garage.  Pretty cool for people that live in shady areas where porch thieves operate

We have the Q thing with the Chamberlain add-on.  We've only used it to monitor the door and have not given Amazon access due to my husband working from home and we're in a porch-pirate free rural area, for now.

I suffer from the paranoia that I've left the door open.  I'd just like to be able to check on it and close/open it remotely, if needed.

I also recommend a belt driven Chamberlain as well. However, I don’t do any IOT entry into my house so I can’t personally comment on the Q link. I’m paranoid and know too many dumb asses that don’t consider security in their dev work.

Nope, not giving someone access to my garage, tools, cars, other hidden goodies.  Not a fan of the wireless entry option for any lock on a door.

Been working on a design for a delivery locker for homes, (and businesses) that could be built into the design of a home garage with exterior access for deliveries without any access to your home.

I bought a locker deal at Costco.  About 18"x18"x18", with a digital keypad run by a single AA battery.

I attached it to the fence adjacent to the entry gate, using carriage bolts.

So, when you put the address in for an order, you use the second address line, like: "123 Elm Street, Lockbox combo 1234#, Anytown USA"

About 9 out of 10 drivers are sharp enough to figure it out and put the Amazon shit in there.

The thing was stupid cheap...about 40 bucks IIRC

In my experience, the MyQ app is a toss up whether it will open/close your door when you try to use it for that purpose, or whether it will shit itself and disconnect from my home network, which is a giant pain in the ass, so I only use it very sparingly for that purpose.

However, I am also afflicted with the "maybe *this* is the first time in my life that I have forgotten to close the garage door" brainworms, so it's very reassuring to be able to just open the app and confirm that everything is closed like it's supposed to be.

On a related note, my external keypad code is BOOBS.

I have a guy who actually gets called to work for [insert prior named companies here] because they get swamped.  He costs less than them.

Send a PM if you want his info... have sent him out to prob. 3 or 4 Shaggers & he did my own garage.  Will make referrals on equipment, etc.  Essentially charges labor only, no parts markup that I am aware of.

In-laws builder used a Genie in theirs and it’s the quietest garage I’ve ever heard. I looked it up once for replacement when mine fails and it was considerably more expensive.   Then I found a guy selling 15 or so 3/4 horse chamberlains that...fell off a truck, for $30/ea.  So I bought a couple just in case.

Pro tip: Take a moment to consider your particular situation and determine whether a silent garage door opener is a desirable feature or a dealbreaker.

Once heard a story about a guy who had his in-laws staying with him for a couple of weeks.  Wife wasn't giving him any pussy because she was weirded out by parents being in the house.  One saturday, FIL goes golfing and wife and MIL go shopping.  Finally, with some "alone" time, he decides to jack off.  He's got some quality porn on his iphone, and he's going to town.  Wife and MIL pull up, the audio shifts to the bluetooth in the minivan, and wife and MIL get treated to the soundtrack of some hottie getting it up the ass.

The Wi-Fi feature is fantastic. Before I worked from home, was great to make sure the kids closed the door when they got home from school and for those moments when my wife or I couldn’t remember if we closed it or not.

Mines a super quiet belt drive so I appreciate the phone alerts when it opens/closes. Has kept me from getting caught doing stupid guy shit.

Surprised nobody has mentioned battery back up. It’s not something I have to use a lot but damn sure appreciate it when powers out during a storm.

I hope you go the chamberlain route with belt drive. Buy a little more horsepower than you need and it will last a long time . They are way affordable at Home Depot. The liftmaster rep I had out told me they make them under that brand.

Take Rofl's rec. Sound like a good deal.

Yep, I bought the Chamberlain belt drive with wifi.  There was an Amazon slickdeal for $179.

Roflbox sent me a PM.  Thanks all!
