MST3K and Rifftrax

We don’t have an MST3K / Rifftrax thread over here yet, do we?  Wrong!  We do now.

What are your favorite episodes?  Here’s my list:

MST3K

1. Space Mutiny.  My father and his father before him... also taped wool to their faces.

2. The Final Sacrifice.  What would coach Don Shula do?

3. Agent for H.A.R.M.  Meet me at the judo range.

4. Soultaker.  Bus taker!

5. Pumaman.  Help, I’m falling at a 60 degree angle, defying the laws of physiiiiiics!

Rifftrax

1. The Guy from Harlem.  Another foreign dignitary, I presume?

2. Samurai Cop. We now bring you an episode of “Are We an Established Gang Yet?” already in progress.

3. Santa Claus and the Ice Cream Bunny.  I said I wanted a blonde one!  Squish.

Any other recs?

I’ve been working through Rifftrax episodes on Prime.  It seems like you have to wade through 9 stinkers to get to a good one, but the good ones are very, very good.

I'd put "The Final Sacrifice" at #1. Rowsdower is the greatest foil in the MST3K series.

I probably mentioned this on the old site, but my son and I have a theory that The Force Awakens is a remake of The Final Sacrifice.  The plot and character similarities are too numerous and too close to ascribe to chance.

"3. Agent for H.A.R.M.  Meet me at the judo range."

HARM stands for "Hot and Ready, Man"...

i always liked the old 50's school films like "Keeping it Clean and Neat"  and "Why Study Industrial Arts?", "What to do on a date?"

This may be the best one, you must watch, “A Date with your Family”

some of the lines during dinner.

Crow: “Emotions are for ethnic people”

”Dad, I’m dating a negro”

”a violent arguement breaks out over who’s day was more pleasant”

Narrator: Seat your mother as you would your best girl. Mike: the less said about this the better”

“Father I had a feeling today...” “well don’t son!”

Fucking lulz

Definitely my favorite short.  And that line is a classic in our family.

I don’t know why but the line that always gets me is when the sexy trainee spy chick gets scooped up by the star in an aggressive embrace, spurring her to invite him up to her apartment.  Servo then riffs: “Uh, I don’t know.  Do you have cats?”  Makes me LOL every time.

That episode is really underrated.  The preppy henchman sequence is fucking hilarious.

My woman calls it "that creepy show" and refuses to watch it haha

I have to go...

1.) Final Sacrifice

2.) Hamlet (don't hate)

3.) This Island Earth

4.) Manos: The Hands of Fate

5.) Mitchell

6.) Outlaw

7.)  Overdrawn at the Memory Bank

8.) Space Mutiny

9.) Devil Doll

10.) Time Travelers (that's right a Jonah)

Honorable mention for anytime Joel says: "Oh woooow"

I fucking eat this stuff up with a spoon.  Love MST3K in college and recently found Pluto TV where they have a channel for MST3k and a Channel for Rifftrax.  I think they also showed episodes of "The film Crew."

Watched the handful of episodes on Netflix (old episodes not the reboot) and today found more episodes on Hulu.

It's pretty much all I watch these days other than old sitcoms.

I recently caught a couple more Rifftrax gems available on Amazon Prime:

”The Dark Power.”  Elderly hero Lash Larue bullwhips the hell out of some Toltec wizard zombies, for some reason.

“Ator: Fighting Eagle.”  This is the first of the Ator series, made famous in Joel and Co.’s riff of the confusingly-named “Cave Dwellers.”  The riffing in this installment is sharper, with some real laugh-out-loud moments.  Well worth the watch.

I tried to watch "Space Mutiny", but I gave up.  It is just not my cup of tea, watching a terrible movie and commenting on it.  I suppose my friends and I do a decent job.

Since researching, I may run some of the https://www.rifftrax.com/catalog/product-type/jokes

Some current movies I think are stupid.

I only made it through Space Mutiny for 15 minutes.  I didn't laugh.

A few Rifftrax worth watching:

Birdemic. One of my all-time favorites. Gut-busting riffs from start to finish. And now I will have “Hangin Out With My Family” in my head the rest of the night.

A Parade of Aquatic Champions. One of the best Rifftrax shorts I’ve seen. WHAM!

Arachnia. Giant spiders and (almost) some hot girl on girl action. Plus an understated Mike Pipper reference or two.

On a similar note and especially for those in Austin or who have seen them while in Austin like me, as an FYI Master Pancake has been hosting on Twitch for free their prior live mocks of movies. Every Friday and Saturday night along with some Wednesday nights. Has been an entertainment bright spot for me during these COVID times being able to see mocks I missed (and even re-watching mocks I have seen in prior years).

Master Pancake is probably my favorite thing to do in Austin. I try to watch and donate as much as possible until the live shows return.

Same here.  I also donate each time as I want to keep them going throughout this. While I get that not everyone watching is also donating, I'm hoping/assuming that they are doing decently with it as they routinely have over 1000+ viewers (and I have seen up to 1800) watching each mock.  That's five times or more the amount of people who could watch them in the big theater at The Ritz for any one show.

There's a random streaming channel on Roku (probably on the other platforms as well) called "Tubi" and it has a ton of Rifftrax and MST3K. they do have ads but they don't pop up very often. I watched one of a movie called "McBain", which is a horrible Christopher Walken movie from the early 90's, and was laughing my ass off.

PlutoTV (free) on Roku and just about every other streaming device have dedicated channels for both Rifftrax and MST3k if you're just wanting to leave them on.

Goto VaughnTv, there are channels the re-runs MST/Riff

Prince of Space
The Killer Shrews
Secret Agent Super Dragon
Eegah
Operation Double 007
Gunslinger
Diabolik
The Brain That Wouldn't Die
Radar Secret Service
Girls Town
The Starfighters
The Beast of Yucca Flats
The Brute Man

Star Fighters is one of my faves and always felt underrated. I’m also an aviation nerd that grew up usaf brat, so it’s easy for me to like this one...the film is almost watchable as an advertisement for the F104 and a vain film endeavor by a future congressman, at least to me.

It was during that prime early Mike period with Trace / Frank, some incredible bits out of the theater (I tell ya it’s bold!!, servo academy men’s chorus), and Frank just makes a better foil to Forrester than BG/Bobo overall.  Kinda the best of the early whimsical Joel ‘aww shucks’ and later Pear/BG/Bobo years where the show had fully matured into its unique niche at the expense of some character.

Ive watched it a dozen times on YouTube.

Also, got this during Cinematic Titanic at the Paramount in 2009.  I took a girl who I was trying to get into her pants*, and she somehow scored first in line for a signing after the show (it was hilarious of course).

I was so incredibly humbled to actually meet some of the people I’d held in comedic reverence for decades that I barely mumbled their names + a quick thank you as I passed each of them, they probably thought I was a weirdo...still better than when I had Bourdain sign my well worn copy of Kitchen Confidential, who took one look at it and accused me of throwing it in the toilet.

I’ve been a MSTie since the show first dropped on The Comedy Channel and ran marathons on thanksgiving, but lost track of it during the later 90’s until my college roommate managed to dig up a few tapes before our junior year when we were living in The Eagles Nest in Stillwater,l for the summer with no cable, no internet and not even a phone.

Our entertainment was essentially tripping, playing the original Tony Hawk or N64 Kart and watching those MST3k tapes...still remember the episodes:  Giant Spider (puppet) Invasion, (the overhead) Projected Man, Phantom Planet (is quilted for softness), Final Sacrifice (ok bring the brats out), Overdrawn At The Memory Bank (it’s a Raul-bix cube) and half of Prince of Space (swing in for some violent porn comics).

Sorry for the novel, feeling reminiscent this morning.  There seems to be two types of people...those that ‘got’ the show and those that didn’t.  The people who ‘got’ it tend to be more the intellectual type in my experience, and always have some great conversations afterwards...which makes sense to me as many of the jokes in the show are a little more cerebral.

*The girl later told me she was going to wait until marriage to have sex again, she was a pretty serious Christian and had broken up with her fiancé a few years prior.  Naturally she got pregnant by a guy fresh out of jail two years after telling me this and is still single.

And I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned one of the all-time classic Rifftrax: “A Talking Cat?!?” If you ever wondered what it would be like if a cat had the voice of Julia Roberts’s drunk, disinterested brother, this is the movie for you! Be sure to stick around through the credits.

And now I’m craving some cheese puffs.
