120k for an Austin life guard is pretty fucking extravagant.

You could probably hire ret navy seals cheaper

Austin doesn't have an ocean last I checked. And you're not talking about the rank and file, but leadership and "specialists" (whatever that means in this context). Hell, an ex navy seal is probably be exactly the type of candidates LA County  looks to hire.

Many have a mental block that someone that serves them, shouldn't earn more than them. This includes all govt jobs. I laugh when someone freaks out how large ISD superintendent earns more than 500K. Do you really want to hire someone that can only command 100K on the open job market? They're responsible for the education today and tomorrow of 100s of thousands of kids. And many employees. Now whether the right person was hired is another question.

The one problem that I do have with some high govt salaries is that it also includes pensions which are effectively salaries for life.  When govt workers start to earn what is the equivalent of private sector salaries, we should phase govt pensions out. Let them fund a 401k, 403b, whatever.  Or the govt pension should top out at a certain point. If you earn a large govt salary, then you should be on the hook for funding more of your retirement not the taxpayer.

So you're saying military personnel should be making a shit load more in salary, especially front line combatants.  The, the hired help shouldn't be making more than me thing is true in some degree, but the headline of this thing must be very misleading.

Lifeguards (not admin folks), but stand sitting, zinc oxide nose covered lifeguards making $200k is a skewed salary.

Have no fear then, outside a few specialists, they aren't making close to that.

Don't put words in my mouth. I don't know what people should be making. It should be based on the supply of quality, replacement candidates and the responsibility level of the worker.

There are a lot of LA county doctors saving a lot more lives per day than a lifeguard can dream of and they aren’t paid near what these top earners are for likely the same hours. Get back to me when people are actually paid for their worth to society. Until then, we have sand jocks bilking LA county for mid six figures. At least it’s legal.

Have you heard about Ryan’s World?

Are you having a stroke?  Should we call an ambulance?

Yeah hopefully not.  It's something with the voice activated feature on my I phone. It duplicates responses occasionally, but *to any response... would have been a more literate sen-tence.

Why are the section chiefs and captains not on salary? Would be interested to know which lifeguards are eligible for overtime.
I wonder if there is a union for LA lifeguards. It’s a topic for another day, but public employees should not be able to unionize. There are no negotiations with the people that are required to pay the benefits.

If we paid teachers overtime, I bet there would be after school tutoring out the wazoo (and also corrupt).

Most teachers put in lots of unpaid overtime - grading, planning, back to school nights, summer workshops....

The butt hurt is strong with you.

How much should they be making ?  I don't know, but $200k would be more than many other professions that are more dangerous, and more skill set/ education/ experience required. Were $200k an average for many of them, would be more than many people who work in essential healthcare, and dangerous military positions. It's already established that the article is about outliers or just click bait, but continue to be a dick it seems fits you well.

LA has issues with overtime in general.  Hell, a traffic officer made $234,000 in 2019.   Seems odd to focus on life guards, as opposed to all the cops earning overtime.

Same for cops & firefighters in Austin & Round Rock.

Yep. An entire thread bitching about how much money beach lifeguards make in LA.

Next up. A thread bitching about how much money certain shrimp boat captains make after a hurricane rolls through and destroys the rest of the fleet.

I can understand why some public employees are allowed OT and others are not. If crime is going up, then the city needs more police work. You can't and do not want to increase the police force by 10% overnight. But you can ask the work force to work 10% longer hours and receive pay for it.

I can see the same argument somewhat for life guards. If there is demand for their services but not enough lifeguards, then you have to offer OT.

EDIT: City govts can hire more full time people if they don't like paying OT. Of course, then you might be stuck with those employees for the next 40 years. Paying OT keeps forecasted budgets lower.

Also, I would assume staffing levels are seasonal. There probably aren't too many life guards qualified for those jobs who are willing to work only during the peak season.

I guarded at Barton Springs back in the 80s for a number of years. To even get an interview, you had to pass a swim test that you probably would not be able to pass if you hadn't been (or currently were) a competitive swimmer in HS. If you didn't pass the swim test, they sent you to a neighborhood pool. If you passed the swim test, they would train you in the life saving techniques, CPR, first aid, blah blah blah.

Then you had to show your proficiency in those skills every other week or so, or you got taken off the schedule.

Backboarding somebody (or worse, playing the victim and getting backboarded) in that cold ass water sucked.

Over the course of maybe 6 or 7 years (couple of summers of HS, pretty much year around during my undergrad years at UT) I had to probably pull 10 or 15 people out of the water, mostly kids walking or jumping into water too deep for them, couple of adults who got cramps, and had to perform CPR once on one old guy who had a heart attack in the parking lot. (During that time frame, one guy did drown at the pool, but I wasn't there that afternoon).

I sure as fuck didn't paid 200K.

Pulled a lotta ass, though.

About 4 or 5 years ago, at BS I saw a lifeguard pull a 30s yr old guy from the water and perform CPR. It was crowded from all the middle and high school kids going to the pool after the last day of school in May. They kicked everyone out of the pool. I had taken my middle school daughter and her friends there. We all knew the dude died. That image of the lifeguard doing CPR still haunts me.

What gets me is that I walked by the pool area where the guy drowned just a few mins before. There was hardly anyone in the water. I think the dude drowned pretty much right in front of the lifeguard. I have no idea how the life guard didn't see the guy.

I know one of the life guards on duty that day drowned a few years later in Barton Creek. I remember recognizing his face when they showed his picture.

Crazy.
