2021 Houston Astros Thread

Why is there no discussion of the position of greatest need: catcher? — Charles L.

Because teams don’t evaluate catchers purely by their offensive stats like some fans do. Astros pitchers love throwing to Martín Maldonado, so the fact he’s been one of the worst hitters in baseball this season isn’t enough for him to lose his job. He hasn’t even lost playing time despite the Astros having a good backup in Jason Castro. That tells you how little they care about Maldonado’s bat. He’s there for his defense, game-calling and leadership.

Even if some sort of star catcher was available — the catcher market seems very quiet — the Astros essentially locked themselves into their catcher situation when they extended Maldonado for 2022 in April and gave Castro a two-year deal in January. You could certainly quibble with either of those decisions, but it’s another reason there hasn’t been any discourse around the Astros potentially dealing for a catcher.
