Texas Basketball Recruiting Notes: Keep Austin Beard

Probably closes the door on Sims, but Disu probably has more offensive game than Jericho. I wonder if Beard can still pull in Williams on top of Disu. Probably not as some of these guys will want to play, and we are starting to see the minutes fill up at the F & C spots.

Nah, if it impacts anyone, it's Bishop.

Spoiler

Chris Beard and staff continue to work toward putting together a roster that is trending to being ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation headed into the 2021-22 season.

Last week, there was a run of good news and addition to the roster with forward Timmy Allen (Utah), combo guard Devin Askew (Kentucky), power forward Christian Bishop (Creighton) announcing plants to transfer to Texas, and guard Andrew Jones announcing his return for one more season.

On Wednesday, Vanderbilt power forward and former Pflugerville Hendrickson star Dylan Disu put his name in the portal with the Longhorns heavily favored to be the landing spot for the SEC’s leading rebounder in 2020-21. IT also learned that Georgia portal point guard Sahvir Wheeler has serious interest in Texas, and the prospects for the staff maximizing season one continues to trend positively.

Texas currently has 295 high-major starts, and over 440 games of high-major basketball experience on next years roster with three or four more spots expected to be filled. The Longhorns ideal want to add a point or another combo guard, and two or three bigs with one being a rim protector that isn’t necessarily a big minute player, but impacts the game for short stretches.

2022 recruiting on fire:
The Texas staff is receiving a lot of positive feedback in the 2022 cycle and beyond. Focusing on the 2022 cycle, here are top targets to know...

PG Arterio Morris, 6-3 (Dallas Kimball)
SG Keyonte George, 6-4 (iSchool Academy)
CG Cason Wallace, 6-3 (Richardson High)
SF Dariq Whitehead, 6-5 (Montverde Academy/NJ)
SF Terrance Arceneaux, 6-6 (Beaumont United)
PF Kijani Wright, 6-9 (Windward High/CA)
C Felix Okpara, 6-11 (Hamilton Heights/TN)
C Kel’el Ware, 6-11 (North Little Rock/AR)
C Vince Iwuchukwu, 7-0 (La Lumiere School/TX)

More names to know:
PG Bryce Griggs, 6-2 (Hightower High)
CG Anthony Black, 6-7 (Coppell High)
PF Zuby Ejiofor, 6-8 (Garland High)
PF Colin Smith, 6-8 (Dallas St. Mark’s)

Wheeler can distribute the hell out of the ball - but at some point don’t we need somebody who can shoot a 3?

Isn't that what Febres, Jones, and the freshmen will do? If Ramey comes back then he can heave them too. You have 14 attempts just between Febres, Jones, and Ramey at a very respectable 37.2%, then you add in Askew, Allen, and Tyson. Hell even Disu has averaged 4.9 attempts for his career, and shot .369 last year. That 4.9 per game from Disu would have been the team leader for the Red Raiders.

If you add up all the those attempts you get to 22.1 attempts per game at a .352, going back to his Little Rock team, 22.1 per game would be the most ever for a Beard coached team.

True.  This could work better if Disu is the 4.  Disu can shoot outside, and Allen can play on the perimeter even if his three point shot isn’t great.  We’d be able to spread the floor and make teams have to guard everyone outside except Sims.

The best part of Dickie V is he will on air support the coaches that get busted for tampering. He has never once in his life had a spine when it comes to holding coaches accountable when they get busted for cheating.

He's of Italian descent.

Just read Vitale's WIKI page. He was a good high school coach, had one season of major success in college (though was pretty good in the other 3 seasons), and was absolutely horrible as an NBA coach for 1 season + 12 games and contributed mightily to the Bostons Celtics 3 championships in the 1980s, albeit as the coach and personnel many of the Detroit Pistons. (Not his intention.)

College basketball transfers, roster winners from Week 2 of the offseason, ranked by Andy Katz

2. Texas
New Texas coach Chris Beard will lead a new-look Longhorns roster, as Kentucky's Devin Askew, Creighton's Christian Bishop and Utah's Timmy Allen will play in Austin next season, as will Texas guard Andrew Jones, who is returning to school. Jones led Texas in scoring last season at 14.6 points per game, along with 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, so he'll play an integral role in Beard's first Texas team.

Allen led Utah in scoring and rebounding last season at 17.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while Bishop was Creighton's top rebounder (6.4 rebounds per game) and fourth-leading scorer (11.0 ppg). Askew averaged 6.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game as a freshman at Kentucky.

(Full article.)

The picture of the 2021-22 men's college basketball season is gradually becoming more clear, at least as far as the players, teams and rosters are concerned. With another week of the offseason, there was another flurry of roster decisions, including transfer players finding new homes, seniors announcing they will return to school or players withdrawing from the NBA Draft.

In the latest March Madness 365 podcast, Andy Katz takes stock of all the roster decisions made in the last week and evaluates who had the best week for the latest edition of #KatzRankz. He ranks the top-10 winners of roster decisions made during the second week of the offseason, reflecting decisions that were made official starting Monday, April 12, through Sunday, April 18.

Here are the top 10 winners from roster decisions made during the second week of the offseason, according to Katz.

10. Alabama
Alabama added a pair of players to its roster in the last week — Texas Tech's Nimari Burnett and Furman's Noah Gurley.

Burnett, a 6-4 guard, averaged 5.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game as a freshman, before departing the program in early January. Gurley, a 6-8 forward, played three seasons at Furman, where he averaged a career-best 15.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a junior. He shot 57.8 percent inside the arc and he made 34 percent of his 4.5 3-point attempts per game, so he could be a player who fits in with Alabama's offense that favors 3-point attempts and shots at the rim, but few shots in between.

Gurley and Furman played Alabama in each of the last two seasons, including last December, when Gurley scored 15 points in a loss in Tuscaloosa.

9. Kansas
Kansas added Drake transfer Joseph Yesufu to its roster after Yesufu posted the highest shot rate on Drake last season, when the Bulldogs went 26-5. When he was on the floor, he attempted 29 percent of the team's shots, while still remaining efficient, with 39 percent 3-point shooting and 83-percent free-throw shooting.

The 6-foot guard averaged 12.8 points per game as a sophomore after averaging 3.8 points per game as a freshman.

8. LSU
Xavier Pinson transferred from Missouri but stayed within the SEC as he will play for LSU next season. The 6-2 guard led  the Tigers in usage rate and shot rate last season — roughly 30 percent in both rates — while scoring 13.6 points per game, which ranked second on the team. He scored at least 20 points on five occasions, including 36 points against TCU thanks to eight 3-pointers and eight free throws.

7. Wisconsin
Brad Davison will return to Wisconsin, where he averaged 10 points per game last season as the team's third-leading scorer, and the Badgers will also add Jahcobi Neath to the roster after Neath spent two seasons at Wake Forest. Neath averaged 5.3 points per game as a freshman and 3.8 points per game as a sophomore, while shooting 34.6 percent from three in his first two seasons.

6. San Diego State
The Aztecs will add Cal transfer Matt Bradley to their roster after Bradley led the Golden Bears in scoring last season at 18.0 points per game, while also averaging 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists. He shot 51 percent inside the arc and 36 percent from behind it. He scored at least 20 points 11 times in 22 games last season, including 29 points in a win over Colorado, which was the highest-seeded Pac-12 team in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

5. Florida
The Gators will have a new-look roster next season as they added to their roster Penn State's Myreon Jones (15.3 ppg), Charleston Southern's Phlandrous Fleming (20.1 ppg), UMKC's Brandon McKissic (17.2 ppg) and Boston College's CJ Felder (9.7 ppg).

4. Tennessee
Tennessee will get another season from John Fulkerson and the Volunteers will add Auburn transfer Justin Powell to their roster. In 10 games, Powell shot 44 percent from three and he posted an assist rate of 32.2 percent, which means that he assisted on roughly a third of Auburn's baskets when he was on the floor.

Fulkerson averaged 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for Tennessee last season.

3. Illinois
Not only will Trent Frazier (10.2 ppg) return to Illinois but the Illini will add to their roster Florida's Omar Payne (3.8 ppg and 3.2 rpg) and Utah's Alphonso Plummer (13.6 ppg). Illinois lost Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn, but the return of Frazier and the additions of Plummer and Payne could help Illinois continue the success that resulted in a No. 1 seed in the 2021 NCAA tournament.

1. Villanova
Villanova could be poised to contend for its third national championship in six seasons after the announced returns of co-Big East Player of the Year Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels. Both players shot 37 percent from three last season and Samuels was the most efficient scorer in Big East play last season with an offensive rating of 124.9.

(Nick Harris) Hardwood Nuggets: Looking at where Texas stands with multiple transfer targets

Spoiler

Since coming on as the new head coach at Texas, Chris Beard and his since assembled staff have been working tirelessly to put together a roster that looked severely depleted upon their arrival.

In the nearly three weeks since arriving in Austin, Beard has secured commitments from three transfers: former Creighton small forward Christian Bishop, former Kentucky guard Devin Askew and former Utah power forward Timmy Allen. Texas has also been able to retain three players from last year's roster: Andrew Jones, Brock Cunningham and Jase Febres.

In addition, Beard was able to flip his lone 2021 signee from Texas Tech, Plano (Texas) John Paul II four-star small forward Jaylon Tyson.

With just seven players secured for next season's team and decisions still pending from multiple starters from last year's squad, Chris Beard and staff have continued to hammer the transfer portal hard as they look to build a competitive and talented roster in a timely fashion.

In this article, we will take a look at all of the possibilities in the transfer portal for the Texas Longhorns as they continue to build the roster throughout the spring.

DYLAN DISU, POWER FORWARD (VANDERBILT)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-9, 220 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 15.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, 49.2% field goal percentage

Despite not being in the portal at the time, Horns247's Chip Brown first reported the possibility of Texas landing Dylan Disu on April 13. On Wednesday, the first step of that becoming a reality took place as Disu entered his name in the portal. Texas is the overwhelming favorite to land the SEC's leading rebounder from a season ago as the Pflugerville Connally 2019 graduate grew up a fan of the program. Expect big-name programs to get involved early but at this point, I expect Texas and Disu to move quickly towards getting him on the roster and secured for next season's team.

DE'VION HARMON, POINT GUARD (OKLAHOMA)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 200 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 12.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists

The Denton Guyer 2019 graduate picked up a lot of attention out the gate after entering the transfer portal last week, but two programs have since found their way to the top: Oregon and Texas.

The Ducks' efforts have been spearheaded by former Oklahoma assistant Chris Crutchfield who returns to the Division I ranks after one season as the head coach at East Central University. Crutchfield was crucial in recruiting Harmon to Oklahoma as he is looking to win the same battle in his first few weeks in Eugene.

Texas' efforts have been strong as they look to add depth to their backcourt, but their fate with Harmon could hang in the decision that Matt Coleman makes in the coming days. If Coleman returns, it will definitely work into the favor of Oregon. But if he were to leave the team, Texas could have a serious shot at landing Harmon.

Other schools that have been heavily involved as the days pass with Harmon have been BYU and Arkansas. A timeline for a decision has not yet been determined.

DEVANTE JONES, POINT GUARD (COASTAL CAROLINA)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 200 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 19.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.8 steals, 86.2% free throw percentage

Devante Jones caught up with 247Sports' DuShawn London on Wednesday in this report where he explained that Texas is one of the three schools recruiting him the hardest right now along with Michigan and Memphis. While Jones explores his professional options, his parents have been running point on the communication with schools. Jones likes the idea of playing alongside Devin Askew and has them as an early top option.

However, the tricky factor will be that Jones is going to explore the professional option to the fullest extent and will wait out his possibilities in that route. This process could be lengthy as he will participate in multiple workouts in search of NBA feedback, but if the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year decides to return to the college ranks in 2021-22, expect Chris Beard and Texas to have a solid shot at securing his commitment and joining what could be an exceptionally talented backcourt in Austin.

BRYSON WILLIAMS, POWER FORWARD (UTEP)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-8, 228 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 15.1 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game, 83.6% free throw percentage

Bryson Williams was one of the biggest contributors in Conference-USA last season for UTEP under head coach Rodney Terry who is now one of Chris Beard's newly-hired assistants at Texas. Williams has already followed Terry once after his move from Fresno State to UTEP and all signs point to Williams wanting to follow him once again to Austin. Williams could provide stability in the frontcourt with reliable free throw shooting as well as senior experience.

NICK ONGENDA, POWER FORWARD/CENTER (DEPAUL)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-11, 210 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 5.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks

As Texas searches for options in the frontcourt, depth is also a concern as they will possibly have to fill multiple spots down low via the transfer portal. Nick Ongenda serves as a high upside player who can come in and provide depth off the bench in year one before possibly expanding into a bigger role with development from the Texas coaching staff. On Wednesday, the native of Little Rock named a top three of DePaul, Oklahoma State and Texas. A timeline for his decision has not yet been determined.

SAHVIR WHEELER, POINT GUARD (GEORGIA)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-10, 180 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 14.0 points, 7.4 assists, 1.7 steals

Despite just entering the portal on Tuesday, former Georgia point guard Sahvir Wheeler has already started to generate some attention from high major programs, with a return to his home state of Texas (originally from Houston) being the preferred option for Wheeler and his family. The Longhorns have made contact with Wheeler as they search for a guard that can come in and contribute in a big way immediately. Wheeler was one of the best facilitators in all of college basketball last season as he ranked fifth nationally in assists and first in the SEC.

JACOB YOUNG, GUARD (RUTGERS)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 185 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 14.1 points, 3.4 assists, 1.7 steals

Could Jacob Young finish his career in the same spot he started in Austin after all? My sources indicate that while his options are crowded, it is certainly a possibility. Young blossomed into one of the best guards in the Big Ten last season and was three points away from knocking off Houston in the Round of 32 last season. Speaking of the Cougars, Kelvin Sampson and his Houston staff are one of many staffs that have reached out to the Houston native. Michigan along with other Big Ten options are other options to watch in this one.

KUR KUATH, CENTER (OKLAHOMA)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-10, 220 pounds

2020-21 Stats: 5.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 blocks

Kuath is another high upside player that could end up being a major contributor in Austin next season if he chooses to join Chris Beard and staff at Texas. While Kuath is another player that is exploring his NBA options to the fullest extent, schools such as Marquette, LSU, Texas, Hawaii, Boston College and BYU have all been in contact with the big man originally from Sudan.

Williams seems very unlikely if Sims comes back and Disu ends up at Texas.

Need to find a 5, like Ongenda, that might be willing to play small minutes until there is roster turnover in 2 years.

Ongenda needs plenty of development. Backing up Sims for a year working with Beard's staff would be great for both the player and Texas.

So

G - D. Jones / Askew

G - A. Jones / Ramey / Febres

G/F - Allen/ Cunningham / Tyson

F - Disu / Bishop

F - Sims / Ongenda

Fuck what a team that would be. I still think that if we land another G that Ramey leaves though.

Gonna be a hell of a turnover the next year if that’s the group with the entire starting 5, Bishop and Febres leaving.

Thank god we hired a guy who is adept at using the portal to reload.

I have no worries - besides 2022 class having some elite guards who should be able to start day 1, Beard can still fill the holes through the portal yet again.

I think you're underestimating how much Beard will like a 100% effort defensive destroyer.

Cunningham has a lot offer in the effort, passing, defense, and even rebounding categories... he will be a valuable bench player who could average 10 minutes a game if he stays out of foul trouble.  With the predicted deep roster, minutes will have to be earned... unlike the days where we had potentially useful situational players sitting on the bench at odd times.

He's taking minutes from whom? If you land that roster you are talking about guys that averaged 133 minutes combined last year. Those guys are already going to have to sacrifice 13 minutes just to get to the 120 that would be needed at the front court positions. There is something to be said about team guys that practice hard to make their teammates better, but Cunningham ain't playing many important minutes if this roster comes to fruition.

Yep.  I forgot that covid didn’t take a year from everyone.  I was counting Bishop and Febres as SRs next year.

This roster Beard is putting together is amazing. Lost in all of it is that nobody is talking about Greg Brown, a potential first round draft pick. A month ago he would have been considered a must return for us to have any chance to be decent. Now, Beard is like who gives a shit.

One of the few things that I agreed with Shaka about was when he said during the Big 12 tournament, or maybe after the ACU game, that he didn’t have Greg in the game much “because we were trying to win the game”.

Greg was an obvious liability late in the season and that’s why he barely played. Now, with a real coach, I don’t think that he would have been a liability, but with all that he DIDN’T learn under Shaka, it was obvious that he was a walking disaster in crunch time.

Once they made transfers get a waiver for the 2nd transfer it made it very unlikely McClung was transferring

This has been the norm in non-revenue sports for a while.

I know a girl who played her freshman year of soccer in the Big 10, then was immediately eligible to play her sophomore year at a college in LA, but then decided to head back home and attend college close to where she grew up and had to red-shirt there before playing her final two years of eligibility. And that was a little over a decade ago.

They've been inconsistently ruling on that for a while now.  Some programs seem to get anyone they want to play immediately and others have to sit out.  Programs make up BS about family issues to get waivers approved or the NCAA just doesn't seem to give a crap half the time.

But what the NCAA is doing now is saying that if these kids transferred once without sitting, they can't use the new rule to do it again.   This would not affect someone like Jacob Young, who sat out a year between Texas and Rutgers.  McClung didn't have to sit because he got a waiver approved.

Again, McClung has already transferred once and got a waiver while doing so. Fields only transferred once. It's very difficult to get a waiver twice to forgo sitting out a year.

Hilarious that the NCAA was like “oh yeah, that definitely could have happened at Georgia. Definitely.” And the response wasn’t even to fight it, just to say it’s stupid. Because that definitely could have happened at Georgia.

Coaching change so you quit? Waiver

Stick it out for a year under the new coach to give them a chance instead of just quitting on the team immediately? NO WAIVER

Pretty sure a Notre Dame WBB player got a waiver Bc the ND team would only be like 6 deep without her.

My favorite was the Fresno State WR Jalen Saunders who transferred to OU.  Fresno State had a coaching change and the new coach was moving from a passing spread to a heavy run pro style.  So Saunders, who was really good, told ESPN he was going to transfer because he didn’t like the new coach’s system.

He transfers to OU.  And gets a waiver based on his allergies because apparently Norman has much cleaner air. Almost as good as Roidacek getting an extra year for being a violent drunk.
