Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

Wells is trash. And most folks thought Herman was a home run, myself included.

Which is why no one should be jonesing so hard for a specific coach in advance, trashing the program as it is now.  It is too hard to know who is the right guy, and shit is constantly changing.

Spoiler

There’s always a silver lining. Almost, anyways, and it’s usually nowhere as good as the gold covering. Alas, we are looking for positives. For Texas, the silver lining of not making a bowl allows for 100% focus on recruiting. Right now the staff needs to work hard to ensure the current class stays committed while also continuing to recruit the remaining elite, must-get prospects. To that end, Jeff Banks and Terry Joseph will go in-home with five-star corner back Denver Harris (North Shore/Houston, TX) next week, and AJ Milwee will be in-home with stud quarterback Devin Brown (Corner Canyon/Draper, UT) on Sunday.

We will continue to monitor for other visits. You can be assured a lot of them are in the works.

Reminder: Steve Sarkisian can only go in-home once per recruit, so he’ll likely start using those as we near Early Signing Day.

The staff needs to regain positive program trajectory. Far and away the best way to do that is to win, but you can also cultivate perception with good recruiting and taking advantage of the portal.

RECRUITING

Jamarion Miller switched UT’s 2022 running back class from plural to singular, leaving Klein Cain’s Jaydon Blue as the lone commit.

Texas re-engaged with Newton three-star tailback DeAnthony Gatson a few months ago. Stan Drayton remains in contact and the former USC commit is certainly one to monitor.

The flip of Miller leads to the question of if any other current commits could depart leading up to signing day.

IT checked on a number of defensive recruits, and it appears the commits are solid.

Ole Miss will recruit Aaron Bryant (Southaven/Southaven, MS) until NSD. He remains solid as of earlier in the week.

Oklahoma and Ole Miss continue to try and recruit DL Kristopher Ross (North Shore/Houston, TX). Ross remains pretty solid. The new head coach hires at LSU and TCU are also very likely to try and make a December run.

Jaray Bledsoe (Marlin/Marlin, TX) and Zac Swanson (Brophy Prep/Phoenix, AZ) remain solid. IT previously checked on Justice Finkley (Hewitt-Trussville/Trussville, AL) and Anthony Jones (Liberty/Las Vegas, NV) and all systems are go.

QB Devin Brown, Corner Canyon (Draper, UT) - 2022: The former Southern Cal pledge recently reopened his recruitment after seeing Ole Miss, UT, and Ohio State recently. Texas and Ohio State appear to have separated from the pack.

Brown has mentioned making an announcement during early NSD December 15th, but a decision could come before that, and it could come pretty much out of nowhere. Texas likes where it stands with Brown at the moment, but we’re hearing Ohio State is equally confident in landing the On3 No. 27 player in the nation.

WR Matthew Golden, Cain (Klein, TX) - 2022: The On3 No. 77 player in the nation will be in Austin today for the K-State contest. It’s an unofficial. UT hopes the visit motivates him to use his official visit in December.

LB Tausili Akana, Skyridge (Lehi, UT) - 2023: The On3 No. 55 overall prospect for 2023 keeps tabs on Texas. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, the four-star holds offers from Texas, OU, Georgia, Texas A&M, and Oregon.

He likes Texas, keeps in touch with the coaching staff who came out to see him play this season. He believes Steve Sarkisian has done well thus far and he’ll attend Texas’ camp during the summer.

“There is a lot to like about Texas Football,” Akana told IT.

He doesn’t have any visits planned in the near future, but a Junior Day trip to Austin next year is possible.

S Larry Turner-Gooden, Bishop Alemany (Playa Del Ray, CA) - 2022:

The 6-foot, 180-pound safety will announce his commitment at the UA All-American Game on January 8th.

Texas, Penn State, Maryland, Colorado, and USC round out his top five. The former Arizona State commit has seen UT twice in the last two months and shows strong interest in the Horns down the stretch.

He will sign during the early period.

TEAM

A few notes we’ve gathered. A couple of them are pretty interesting as we gear up to see the roster reshaped.

The team spent Thanksgiving with a walk through in the morning, some free time in the early afternoon, followed by meetings at night.

K-State looms, and then, mercifully, offseason.

— EDGE Jacoby Jones returned to practice this week and looked more explosive than expected. This is relative to the amount of time he missed due to injury. He’ll be on a pitch count dependent on how he feels and they’ll reevaluate from there. They want him to relish senior day but no over-do it.

— Similarly, Jordan Whittington returned from injury last week. After his shoulder injury he’s up to 215 pounds and one source suggested it’s not out of the realm of possibility he looks at playing safety this spring. IT believes that will be dependent on A) his desire and B) how UT addresses receiver shortcomings between now and spring ball. The source also mentioned he can protect himself better on defense.

— Not so fast on defensive tackle Keondre Coburn leaving early. His name was listed among those who will walk during Senior Day festivities but IT heard he didn’t film a video portion like others did. We would have liked to double-source that last note, but one thing’s for sure, he’s having second thoughts about leaving and it’s more likely he’ll return.

— It’s probably more likely than not T’Vondre Sweat will enter the portal. That could change in a hurry but right now it’s not looking great. More on that at the proper time.

— De’Marvion Overshown’s return is also up in the air. He wants to go earn but doesn’t expect to get the recommendation to leave by the advisory council. There’s a good chance he‘ll get an insurance policy like Bijan Robinson did and elect to return. It’s not set in stone but it’s trending that way. With Luke Brockermeyer’s horrifically timed injury, Texas has even more questions at the position heading into the spring. Overshown returning would be good for the position even if he didn’t play all that great this year.

— Staying at linebacker, Texas does expect to lose two more at the position to the Portal. But the coaches should try Jaden Hullaby at H-back with Cade Brewer running out of eligibility.

— With Texas having so many question marks throughout the roster, it’s a positive development when any starter returns. However, as one source put it, ”there’s going to be the potential for hurt feelings. Sark isn’t messing around this offseason when it comes to addressing talent issues. Just because you started this year doesn’t mean he won’t find somebody better in the portal.” The source was discussing O-line when this particular note was made but it extends to the entire roster.

So is Brown a January enrollee, if he does come? If he is, and can go through spring ball, he's gotta be favored to take over next year. If not, it'll be tough to come in next summer and win the job... although probably still the best option.

Eh… Miller stung bc he was actually good.  Winfield can enjoy blocking in the cold weather in East Lansing.  If Sark covets speed, then Winfield is not a good fit for us.  Our coaches know and Winfield knows it.

Get Matthew Golden and hope some alum can put together 250k with a QB transfer for Stewart.

Also, Coleman needs to be fired yesterday.

Unbelievably embarrassing to have your first commit dump you without telling you. Coleman is done.

Is there a single justification for keeping Coleman on the staff at this point? And don't give me 'continuity' because Sark inherited him from the last regime, he's been around long enough that the WR situation is on him.

I'm sure the sunshine pumpers will come up with some justification. I'm just curious as to what it is and how deranged it will sound.

Eh, I think the sunshine pumpers won’t mind throwing Coleman to the wolves. The derangement will only come if you try and criticize Sark for keeping him

It’s really frustrating that we let go of good coaches who were able to develop players here like Ash, Hutzler, and Giles (argue all you want, we had two guys that ended up Big 12 DL player of the year).  Instead he kept Andre Coleman…. A guy that should either be an analyst or coaching at a Div 2 school.

I mean our run D still sucked but yeah Ford is definitely our best LB

Yes, but the LBs weren't the main reason for that this game, and Richardson made the play of the game with the 3rd down tackle of Vaughn inside the 20 and Oghoufo took away the pitch man on 4th down.
