Quote

Although New York moved its football season to the spring -- practice is supposed to start in February -- Artis has not spent a lot of time in the offseason dealing with recruiting. Instead, his focus has been on improving his craft. "There is no trying to get better for me," Artis said. "There is getting better. No doubt about it. If I had a season this (fall), it would have been bad for the opposing players. It's just going to be 10 times worse in March."

Top 100 linebacker just decommitted from USC. Los Angeles kid - time to see if hiring a bunch of West Coast natives will pay off.

Not pretending I'm some super scout or anything but his height, weight, and 40-time are all identical to Ayodele Adeoye's. Maybe he's a potential edge rusher?

Football is more than height, weight, and 40 times, but even if it wasn't, all of his measurables are from 2 years ago. Nothing is up to date because of COVID.

2 years is A LOT when you're talking about kids who are currently only 16 or 17.Ā

Gerry Hamilton:Ā Assessing 2022, Texas staff contacts more in-state prospects

Spoiler

The newly hired Texas staff is yet to sit down in Austin as a complete group and hold recruiting meetings. With that said, the work has begun with more contacts having been made by the staff in the last 24 hours.

Here is a look at where things currently stand in the 2022 class from an in-state perspective in terms of contacts made.

Quarterback:
Quinn Ewers, Southlake Carroll
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and quarterbacks coach A.J. Milwee have spoken with members of Ewers circle and Southlake Carroll head coach Riley Dodge. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and staff did a masterful job in relationship building with Ewers.

Cade Klubnik, Austin Westlake
Texas re-offered the dual-threat signal caller from the 6A-DI state champions January 21. The legacy ties to Texas A&M are well documented with both parents graduating, as are the connections to Texas with Todd Dodge and Sam Ehlinger.

Running back:
Jaydon Blue, Klein Cain
The competition for the versatile space playmaker includes Texas, LSU, Oklahoma and Alabama. Among others. The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder has a long standing relationship with Stan Drayton and Bryan Carrington.

Jamarion Miller, Tyler Legacy
Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton has remained in contact with the 5-foot-10, 185-pound versatile speedster throughout the coaching change in Austin. Texas is considered the favorite for the #bEastTexas playmaker.

Zach Evans, Rockwall-Heath
The 5-foot-10, 190-pounder had a terrific 2020 season until an ACL injury deep into the talented teams playoff run. Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton offered Evans January 15th, and the Longhorns have vaulted to the top of a list that includes Power 5 offers from Utah, Arizona State and Kansas. If Texas takes two RBā€™s in the cycle, Evans could find his way into the class.

Wide receiver:
Evan Stewart, Frisco Liberty
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and staff have been in contact with the freaky athlete with big hands and the ability to score at any time on the field. The Longhorns have been at the top of Stewartā€™s list over Alabama and Oregon for a while.

Brenen Thompson, Spearman
The 5-foot-10, 165-pounder with designs on running a 10.05 on the track this spring is a priority target for Sarkisian and staff. Oklahoma has been considered the favorite of Thompson himself, but maybe not the favorite of everyone in the family circle.

Chris Marshall, Fort Bend Marshall
One of the big time risers this season has the full attention of the new Texas staff. Andre Coleman and Bryan Carrington have remained on the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder throughout the change in Austin. Texas A&M is formidable competition.

Jordan Hudson, Garland
The Oklahoma verbal with the best hands in a loaded in-state receiver class remains a target for the Longhorns. This one will be an uphill battle, but is worth the effort as Hudson is not just a sure-handed receiver, but one that can make defenders miss after the catch.

Armani Winfield, Lewisville
The Texas verbal is the first commit in the Steve Sarkisian era in Austin. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder has intentions on being one of the ring leaders for the 2022 class.

Matthew Golden, Klein Cain
The near 6-foot, 180-pounder has the full attention of receivers coach Andre Coleman. This is one prospect the Longhorns could offer down the road. Golden is one of the better pure football players in the state in the 2022 cycle.

Nicholas Anderson, Katy High
Texas receivers coach Andre Coleman has remained in contact with the 6-foot-4, 190-pounder throughout the coaching change. The younger brother of former Oklahoma running back Rodney Anderson is a terrific all-around WR.

Tight end:
This one is yet to be determined.

Offensive line:
Neto Umeozulu, Allen
The devastating run blocker has already spoken with Texas OC/OL coach Kyle Flood. Flood and Banks were all over the 6-foot-5, 300-pounder while at Alabama.

Devon Campbell. Arlington Bowie
The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder that can still dunk a basketball even after having gone from 270 to 315 in the last year, has Texas remaining at the top of his list. Texas assistants Jeff Banks and Kyle Flood are all over Campbell.

Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek
Texas OC/OL coach Kyle Flood has been in contact with Banks ā€œseveral timesā€ according to the 6-foot-5, 300pounder than excels in pass pro. LSU has been trending, as has Texas A&M. Texas was the favorite of Banks at the beginning of the process, according to a source close to the Summer Creek tackle.

Cole Hutson, Frisco High
Texas OC/OL coach Kyle Flood has been in contact with Hutson since arriving in Austin. The Arizona State legacy has offers from every Power 5 conference.

Kam Dewberry, Atascocita
Texas OC/OL coach Kyle Flood was recruiting the 6-foot-4, 315-pounder at Alabama, and the Longhorns have maintained contact in recent weeks.

Connor Robertson, Austin Westlake
The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder has had some contact with Texas QBā€™s coach A.J. Milwee, and his father attended Texas. His mother attended Duke, and the Blue Devils have offered. There are family connections to Wake Forest as well.

Defensive tackle:
Bear Alexander, Denton Ryan
Texas, Georgia, and Ohio State lead a pack that includes, Oklahoma, Alabama and Texas A&M for the near 6-foot-4, 325-pound tackle with elite quickness and length for his size. Bo Davis and Jeff Banks are all over Alexander.

Jaray Bledsoe, Bremond
Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis has prioritized the 6-foot-4, 270-pounder, but so has Texas A&M, Oklahoma, TCU and Baylor. Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher is all in on the small school prospect with high NFL draft pick potential from inside an hour from College Station.

Kristopher Ross, North Shore
Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis has been in contact with the 6-foot-3, 265-pounder with quick feet and long arms. Baylor was the first Power 5 offer earlier in the week. Ross moved to the North Shore High area from Port Arthur, where he used to play alongside Jordan Thomas and Jaylon Guilbeau.

Defensive end:
Omari Abor, Duncanville
Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis is already all over the 6-foot-4, 240-pound end with a very high ceiling. Jeff Banks was also all over Abor while at Alabama. Abor will be a priority target.

Ernest Cooper IV, Arlington Martin
Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis has been in contact with the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder with a frame and game similar to Jackson Jeffcoat. Stanford is considered the heavy favorite.

Derrick Brown, Texas High
Texas has been in contact with the 6-foot-4, 200-pounder since the coaching change in Austin. Oklahoma is the favorite for the EDGE prospect that is a very good scheme fit in the new Texas defense.

Linebacker:
Harold Perkins, Cy Park
Texas A&M and LSU have been trending for the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder that is pound-for-pound one of the best athletes in the 2022 class nationally,. LSU has an appeal as Perkins is from Louisiana, and has family in New Orleans. The Aggies have plenty of momentum in the Houston area, and is attractive with good buddies P.J. Williams and Donovan Green committing to Texas A&M earlier in the week.

Trevell Johnson, Arlington Martin
Texas has reached out to the hard-hitting, instinctive linebacker since Sarkisian was hired. The Longhorns were at the top of the 6-foot-0, 200-pounders list prior to the coaching change.

Kip Lewis, Carthage
Texas assistant coach Blake Gideon offered the fast rising linebacker last week. The 6-foot-1.5, near 200-pounder has seen his stock blow up[ since Carthage won yet another state title with offers from the likes of Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor, Arkansas, and others.

Ish Harris, Pilot Point
The 6-foot-3.5, 190-pound jack of all trades at the small school level projects to linebacker at the next level, and Texasā€™ Drew Hughes has reached out to Harris in the last 12 hours. TCU, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Baylor and Arkansas are among the early offers.

Safety:
Bryan Allen Jr., Aledo
Texas defensive backs coach Terry Joseph has reached out to the 6-foot-0, 190-pound safety since being hired at Texas. The former LSU verbal has Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas at the top of his list.

Landon Hullaby, Mansfield Timberview
There is the connection to Texas, and the fact that Terry Joseph has already been in contact with the 6-foot-0, 185-pound versatile defensive back insect arriving in Austin that leads to the Longhorns having a great shot here. There is a prior relationship with Joseph with Joseph offering Hullaby while at Notre Dame.

Bryce Anderson, Beaumont West Brook
The soft LSU verbal has Texas A&M, Stanford, USC and Alabama in pursuit. Now Texas has entered the picture after Terry Joseph spoke with the father of Anderson on Friday.

Jarred Kerr, Lexington
A recurring theme, Texas defensive backs coach Terry Joseph has been in contact with the 6-foot-0, 180-pound versatile playmaker since being hired by Sarkisian.

Chace Biddle, Garland High
The prior staff had offered the athletic safety prospect. And It has heard the new staff has interest, and has maintained contact throughout the change.

Cornerback:
Denver Harris, North Shore
Texas defensive backs coach Terry Joseph and what will be area recruiter Bo Davis are already all over the elite cornerback prospect. The competition will be fierce from Alabama, Ohio State, LSU and Texas A&M.

Terrance Brooks, Plano John Paul II
The son of former Texas A&M and NFL safety Chet Brooks had Texas at the top of his list prior to the coaching change. Terry Joseph has reached out since coming to Texas, and the Brooksā€™ are fans of Joseph. Joseph was heavily recruiting Brooks ta Notre Dame. Stanford, Oklahoma and Texas A&M will provide competition.

Jaylon Guilbeau, Port Arthur Memorial
The Texas verbal has Texas A&M, TCU and others working to flip the 6-foot-0, 180-pounder that plays boundary corner for the Titans.

Julian Humphrey, Clear Lake
Texas defensive backs coach Terry Joseph has reached out to son of former Galveston Ball star John Humphrey since arriving in Austin. LSU is the most recent major offer, and Texas A&M has been on the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder as long as any Power 5.

The 10.18 was an unofficial, hand time from last year (as a sophomore), that was officially a 10.44. I think his fastest official time was a hand-timedĀ 10.32. Hard to get many laser timesĀ at 3A school, especially with COVID, etc.

That's still fast as shit.

Thompson - who's still just a junior - may get to run in the UIL State meet, or the Texas relays this year and put up some numbers. If he can get in the legit 10.2 range, he willĀ most likely runĀ track in college (probably both track and football ala Marquise Goodwin,Ā Kalon Barnes, etc).

The new staff will meet together for the first time today. One of the main topics will be recruiting, and we expect recruiting territories to be discussed and assignments to be delegated.

In looking at the recruiting landscape and each coachā€™s resume, this is what makes sense to us. Remember, coaches still arenā€™t able to hit the road, so Zoom calls and positional recruiting irrespective of territories will remain a central theme of the 2020 cycle. Hopefully that changes in April.

HC Steve Sarkisian
Area: West Coast, wherever needed
Duties: Quarterbacks, high priorities regardless of offense/defense, skill players, staff closer
Comments: As far as head coaches go, we expect Sarkisian to be a volume recruiter and eventually a volume closer.

OC Kyle Flood
Area: East of the Mississippi, Cen-Texas (Austin to Waco)
Duties: Heavy OL positional recruiting, OL elites wherever they are
Comments: Heā€™ll recruit nationally for OL targets, but his previous ties will come in handy for recruiting other positions as well.

TE/ST Jeff Banks
Area: I-20 corridor in DFW (Lancaster to Mansfield/Arlington), California, Arizona, wherever needed
Duties: Volume recruiter, territories and positions donā€™t really matter
Comments: He has a skeleton key and goes where he wants. Heā€™s known for recruiting Texas but his four highest rated recruits are either from Arizona or Florida. Texas is loaded in 2020 so heā€™ll be busy in-state, but expect him to rekindle relationships he already built while at Alabama and Texas A&M.

RB Stan Drayton
Area: Northwest Houston, heavy positional recruiting
Duties: Running backs
Comments: Jaydon Blue falls in his natural territory of Klein/Cypress. Expect Drayton to spot recruit his position in-state but also nationally, especially with the expectations and hype of Bijan Robinson growing by the day.

WR Andre Coleman
Area: North of I-30 and West of 75 in DFW. This is IT Happy Hour territory. Hopefully they put Banks here.
Duties: Wide receivers and players within his territory
Comments: Expectations are that heā€˜ll become a quality recruiter regardless of position. This is a large, talented region chock-full of his position for him to prove the doubters wrong. I think heā€™ll be good.

QB AJ Milwee
Area: From western DFW to where they start to put beans in their chili, Panhandle, Wichita Falls
Duties: Quarterbacks and players within his territory
Comments: His big value add, besides connecting with quarterbacks on the chalkboard will be evaluating players in person and on film. Heā€™ll be good in camp settings.

DC Pete Kwiatkowski
Area: West Coast, Cen-Tex (Austin and south), Coastal plains
Duties: Front-7 personnel, especially edges and linebackers; heā€™ll be used to sell the overall scheme to defensive recruits and will eventually excel in this area. Heā€™ll need in-person contact for that to truly resonate.
Comments: Heā€™s new to the region and also a coordinator, so theyā€™ll likely keep him close to home rather than on the road as much as positional coaches, especially in-season. He has a long career finding gold out West so expect that to continue. Evaluation will be a big part of his value add.

DL Bo Davis
Area: I-45 and east in Houston, Golden Triangle, Louisiana
Duties: Defensive linemen and players within his territory
Comment: Positional recruiting for Davis will be very important, and also means heā€™ll spend a lot of time chasing studs outside of his territory. Itā€™s not a coincidence there are a lot of studs traditionally in his territory.

Co-DC/LB Jeff Choate
Area: West Houston, Fort Bend, Alief, Highway 6 to Galveston
Duties: Linebacker and players within his territory
Comments: Choate had this area while at Boise State and Washington. This time he gets the home field advantage of having a favorable logo on his polo. Texas has traditionally done a poor job in this talent-rich area. The staff changes should help.

DB Blake Gideon
Area: East Texas, Cen-Tex
Duties: Defensive backs and players within his territory
Comments: The thinking is Gideon will become a quality recruiter regardless of position because of his youth and tenacity. He also has a fine story to tell, especially to underdogs. East Texas is good underdog territory.

CB Terry Joseph
Area: Eastern DFW, Northeast Texas, Louisiana
Duties: Defensive backs and players within his territory; positional recruiting regardless of territory
Comments: Along with Bo Davis, Joseph makes a formidable pairing for recruiting Louisiana at a time when LSU is on the ropes. If he can land Sark a Speedy Noil (minus the issues) there will be statues built for him. Heā€™s off to a solid start with new offers out to priority safeties and corners. Land Terrance Brooks and Denver Harris and his first class is guaranteed to be a resounding success.

Again, this is speculative. Weā€™ve gerrymandered these assignments to fit what we perceive to be the best fit for each coach. Please keep in mind territories arenā€™t rigid. They donā€™t wear neck monitors like Arnold in The Running Man. If Bo Davis wants to go a mile west of I-45 to ā€œrecruitā€ @PinkertonsBBQ he wonā€™t get in trouble. Coaches will go where theyā€™re needed, especially when it comes to their own position.
