Maalik Murphy previews spring football season with first game Friday

Nick Harris

After the fall football season in the state of California was canceled last summer as the COVID-19 pandemic raged in the Golden State, government officials out west deemed a spring football season possible last month in order to get student-athletes back on the field.

For Texas commit Maalik Murphy, it will serve as his first season as the full-time starter for Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra, even if it is for just a shortened six game schedule.

"I'm ready to prove to myself that I can get out there and do what I do best," Murphy said. "And that's be a leader, be a good student to my coaches and not letting anything get to my head. I'm ready to just go out there and ball out and hopefully get a couple of wins in."

Serra's six-game schedule will start on Friday when they take on their biggest rival Long Beach Poly as Murphy and the Cavaliers will look to extend their winning streak over LBP to four games.

"Our biggest game will probably be against Long Beach Poly," he said. "They've been our rival for ten-plus years. We go back-and-forth every year. Every week is gonna be a good week, we don't have any gimme games. We'll have to take every week with a straight-forward mindset."

The rest of the season schedule features Chaminade on March 19 (with live coverage from Horns247), Los Angeles Cathedral on March 26, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on April 1, La Puente Bishop Amat on April 9 and Mission Hills Alemany on April 16.

"With the shorter season and less time, there's no room for error or mistakes," he said. "We have to go out there and be efficient immediately. There's no time to warm up or have a bad game. It's a new season and a new year, I'm ready to do it."

Despite bigger opportunities to play at other prestigious programs in the Los Angeles area, Murphy waited his turn at Serra and is ready to take over the reins of a program he grew up dreaming of playing for.

"Loyalty has been always been a big thing for me, it's always at the top of my list," Murphy said. "Growing up, I always wanted to go to Serra. At four years-old, I had pictures of me in Serra gear and it's always been where my mind is at. No matter who was there, that's where I wanted to be and I knew that. I had to sit a couple of years, share time, but now that it's my time I'm ready to go. When somewhere is the place to be for you, you'll do anything to put yourself there."

Murphy is the highest-ranked commit in the 2022 class for Texas and the highest-ranked quarterback in California. He is the No. 34 overall prospect in the country and the No. 4 recruit in the state of California, according to 247Sports Composite.

Mike Roach:  Texas making impression on rising DE Derrick Brown

Spoiler

Texas making impression on rising DE Derrick Brown

Mike Roach

The rise of 2022 Texarkana (Texas) Texas High defensive end Derrick Brown has been swift. The three-star prospect picked up offers from over 20 programs. Despite the quick attention, Brown said he’s been handling the craziness of recruiting well.

“It hasn’t been that overwhelming,” Brown said. “I feel I’m handling it very well.”

Brown isn’t close to narrowing anything down, but several schools are standing out for him right now. Texas offered recently, but the Longhorns are coming on quickly.

“Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, Arizona State, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Colorado and Ole Miss are the schools standing out most right now.”

Jeff Choate has been the lead recruiter for Brown, and the two are forming a strong bond.

“I’ve been talking with coach Choate,” he said. “He’s saying I could be an immediate impact on the team.”

A long, athletic pass rusher, Brown is being recruited as an edge rusher who could switch between playing with his hand down and the outside linebacker position.

“They see me as a jack,” Brown said. “I would be playing defensive end and outside linebacker.”

Brown is still building relationships and looking into schools. He doesn’t want to make a decision until the fall, and his fit within the defense is going to be the most important factor in the decision.

“I want to make my decision by the middle of the season,” he said. “The fit is going to be most important when I make the decision.”

At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Brown is ranked as the No. 26 weak-side defensive end in the nation and No. 68 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

When I was a child our preachers name was Richard White. Richard preferred to go by Dick, so the phone book listing was White, Dick. Always made my pre-teen self chuckle when I perused the phone book.

Many moons ago, my ex was a server at one of the Black-Eyed Pea locations. A customer named Richard Head regularly brought in various folks for business lunches. And no, the guy didn't go by Richard. "Dick Head, table for four!" was a common refrain. True story, bro.

Meh. The town I grew up in was/is a tiny dot on the map. When I say peruse the phone book I mean flip two pages and be done.

Haven't really heard much of LSU being a factor for many Texas kids this cycle.  They have 1 commit from Texas in CB Marcus Scott, who I don't think has ever been mentioned on these boards.  Just seems a little odd to not hear them mentioned with many guys.  Would be nice to flip the script for once and get Mathews.

They're a tire fire internally and had to flip a bunch of their staff. They'll be a pest again after canning O

I first mentioned this guy in this thread like a month ago as my hope for an additional CB. I did that for no other reason than I thought his name was fucking greatness while clicking through a CB list at 247. If he ends up signing with Texas I will claim for the rest of my board life that I had it the whole fucking way for the greatest UT name since Happy Feller.  Or Lance Gunn. Or Cotton Speyer. Or Colt McCoy. Or someone else because we’ve had a lot of cool names.
