The Athletic - National recruiting big board: The 10 most impactful uncommitted 2022 prospects

Includes Denver Harris (#1) and Devon Campbell (#9)

9. OG Devon Campbell

The particulars: Five-star prospect from Arlington (Texas) Bowie
Ranking: No. 7 overall, No. 1 offensive guard

The buzz: You could make the case that Campbell is the most important remaining uncommitted prospect in the state of Texas. If you wanted to argue that Campbell should be No. 1 on this list, you’d have a strong case. He was clearly one of the top prospects at the Under Armour All-America Camp Series regional in Dallas in mid-March. He’s big. He’s fast. He’s agile. And that’s why he is considering offers from Texas, Texas A&M, Florida State, Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Houston and LSU. His importance to the in-state schools goes without saying, but every top program that recruits Texas is trying to land the talented offensive lineman. He hopes to be able to visit schools before making a decision, and where he ultimately lands should give us a nice indication of which program is recruiting the state the best.

National recruiting big board: The 10 most impactful uncommitted 2022 prospects

National signing day for the 2021 cycle has come and gone, and though a few prospects are still waiting to sign — most notably five-star defensive lineman J.T. Tuimoloau of Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic — the focus immediately shifts to the next batch of recruits.

Here is the third edition of our 2022 big board, following the post-signing-day edition published in early February and the March edition. This is a list of whom we consider the most “impactful” uncommitted prospects. “Impactful” can mean a lot of things, from importance to a specific school, a big regional recruit, a trendsetter or simply a prospect who has an interesting recruitment. As players commit and the landscape changes, this list will change, too.

Let’s continue with the April edition of the national recruiting big board.

1. CB Denver Harris

The particulars: Five-star prospect from Houston (Texas) North Shore
Ranking: No. 6 overall, No. 3 cornerback (247Sports Composite)

The buzz: The Steve Sarkisian era has gotten off to a great start at Texas, but there was a speed bump on March 11 when four-star receiver Evan Stewart of Frisco (Texas) Liberty, the No. 40 player nationally, decommitted from the Longhorns. Texas, however, is still on track to sign a top-five class in Sarkisian’s first go-around, but the Longhorns need to add Harris. He’s the second-highest-rated player in the state — behind five-star quarterback and Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers — so Harris’ value is clear. Texas A&M, LSU and Alabama are also involved, so this is a high-profile recruitment and a chance for Sarkisian to prove his mettle.

2. QB Gavin Wimsatt

The particulars: Four-star prospect from Owensboro (Ky.) High
Ranking: No. 89 overall, No. 3 dual-threat quarterback

The buzz: The top eight quarterbacks in the country have already issued commitments, so even though this is the beginning of April, a lot of coaching staffs are already feeling pressure to land the quarterback of the future. Wimsatt is the highest-rated quarterback in the 2022 class who remains uncommitted. According to his 247Sports profile, he is most closely considering Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Rutgers. Believe it or not, Rutgers is the only program that has received a Crystal Ball projection, and it came from Steve Wiltfong, one of the most plugged-in analysts around. Obviously, Wimsatt is an important prospect to in-state Kentucky, but could you imagine the statement this would make for Greg Schiano if Rutgers lands a prized quarterback from SEC country?

3. DT Walter Nolen

The particulars: Five-star prospect from Cordova (Tenn.) St. Benedict at Auburndale
Ranking: No. 2 overall, No. 1 defensive tackle

The buzz: Five-star quarterback Ty Simpson of Martin (Tenn.) Westview committed to Alabama, and Nolen appears to be most closely considering the usual suspects in Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and Michigan. That means the top two players in the state of Tennessee — both ranked in the top 30 nationally — will likely wind up signing with programs outside of the state. That’s a tough start for Josh Heupel at Tennessee, but it takes time for a new staff to make the necessary inroads before landing these types of talents. But more important than the geography in this recruitment is the type of player Nolen is: a 6-foot-4, 300-pound no-doubt-about-it defensive lineman who will contribute on Day 1. Winning a national title requires stud interior defensive linemen, so it’ll be important to track where Nolen ends up.

4. WR Tetairoa McMillan

The particulars: Five-star prospect from Anaheim (Calif.) Servite
Ranking: No. 18 overall, No. 3 wide receiver

The buzz: In the 2021 recruiting cycle, USC signed five-star defensive end Korey Foreman, four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis and four-star cornerback Ceyair Wright, all of whom were the No. 1 players at their position in the state. If that’s how Clay Helton is going to recruit regularly, the Trojans will make the College Football Playoff soon. It seems to be turning into a trend, as the Trojans already have a commitment in this cycle from five-star Domani Jackson of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, the No. 3 overall player and the No. 1 cornerback in the country. McMillan is a top-20 player from Southern California, and USC seems to be the team to beat. Are the Trojans on the verge of returning to greatness? Conquering their territory is where it starts.

5. RB Gavin Sawchuk

The particulars: Five-star prospect from Littleton (Colo.) Valor Christian
Ranking: No. 24 overall, No. 1 running back

The buzz: You would be hard-pressed to find any issues with Oklahoma’s 2021 class when it comes to offensive skill position talent, but the Sooners suffered a gut-punch when five-star running back Camar Wheaton of Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial surprisingly signed with Alabama after favoring OU for the entire cycle. Oklahoma’s offense is poetry in motion, and in the 2022 class, Lincoln Riley has a chance to land the nation’s top-ranked running back. The Sooners seem to be the team to beat for Sawchuk, but he is also considering Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Stanford. Plucking this talent out of Colorado would be a nice get for any of the aforementioned programs, but this one would mean a ton to the Sooners after what happened with Wheaton.

6. OT Josh Conerly Jr.

The particulars: Four-star prospect from Seattle (Wash.) Rainier Beach
Ranking: No. 55 overall, No. 7 offensive tackle

The buzz: You can’t talk about Washington’s 2021 cycle without mentioning the fact that the Seattle area was home to three top-10 national recruits. As we wait for Tuimoloau to make his decision, it is becoming increasingly clear that Jimmy Lake and the Huskies will come away with only one of them — quarterback Sam Huard of Bellevue Kennedy Catholic. Landing the five-star QB was a must for Washington — especially since his dad (Damon) and uncle (Brock) played the position for UW — but you can’t help but wonder “what if?” when it comes to all of that talent in the surrounding areas of the Huskies’ campus. Conerly isn’t a top-10 national player, but he is a stud athlete from Seattle who is currently considering Washington along with Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, USC and others. This is yet another opportunity for Lake to make a splash close to home.

Last month’s ranking: 7

7. OT Kiyaunta Goodwin

The particulars: Four-star prospect from Charlestown (Ind.) High
Ranking: No. 47 overall, No. 5 offensive tackle

The buzz: Ohio State has recruited as well as any team in college football, but those who closely follow the Buckeyes know there is a little left to be desired when it comes to recruiting elite-level offensive tackles at the national level. In the 2021 cycle, Ohio State seemed to be in the driver’s seat early for five-star offensive tackle J.C. Latham of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG, but Latham ultimately signed with Alabama. Goodwin gives Ohio State another chance to land a stud offensive tackle, and this time the prospect is much closer to Columbus. Goodwin, who lives near Louisville, is also high on Kentucky’s big board — the Wildcats offered him when he was in middle school — and he’s also being pursued by Clemson, Alabama and just about everyone else. This recruitment is a chance for Ohio State to shore up one of its few recruiting weaknesses — and that is a relative term.

Last month’s ranking: NR

8. DE Dani Dennis-Sutton

The particulars: Four-star prospect from Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh School
Ranking: No. 62 overall, No. 4 strongside defensive end

The buzz: Penn State’s 2022 class is off to a phenomenal start after a tough 2021 cycle. James Franklin signed only one top-10 player in the state of Pennsylvania last year, which makes no sense considering he is widely regarded as one of the better recruiters in the game. Maybe that was just an anomaly given the crazy circumstances of the pandemic year, and the way the Nittany Lions are recruiting now makes it easier to buy into that explanation. Dennis-Sutton isn’t from Pennsylvania, but he is in a great location for Penn State to pick up a top-end talent. He’s also considering Alabama, Oklahoma and others, so this recruitment isn’t going to be easy.

Last month’s ranking: 10

10. CB Khamauri Rogers

The particulars: Four-star prospect from Lexington (Miss.) Holmes County
Ranking: No. 65 overall, No. 7 cornerback

The buzz: Lane Kiffin is in Mississippi. Mike Leach is in Mississippi. There’s a lot going on in that state. Rogers is the top-rated player in that state in the 2022 class, a year after the lone top-100 player in Mississippi — four-star receiver Deion Smith of Jackson Academy — went to LSU. Rogers is still considering Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Notre Dame and Miami, so it will be fun to sit back and watch the Leach vs. Kiffin battle.

IT

Spoiler

RB Tavorus Jones, El Paso Burges (2022):

The West Texas tailback and Texas continue to trend favorably. UT wants two in 2022, and with Jamarion Miller looking unlikely, and TreVonte Citizen still scheduling visits, the staff has increased dialogue with the four-star.

Jones will visit Texas on June 18th-20th for an official visit, assuming the NCAA lifts the dead period ban.

This is rather unfortunate. He and Citizen were by far my favorite RB2 options, but I never considered Citizen very likely so I was really hoping we’d get Miller. We still have some solid options, but those guys are difference makers.

But doesn't Tavorus Jones fit the bigger back mold better than Jamarion Miller?

Jones is listed at 5’10, 180 so no. You might be thinking of the other in-state kid IT likes. Can’t remember his name.

I also don’t buy that we need a bigger back that much. If a big back happens to be your best option, like Citizen, then great, but it’s not such a need that we should pass on a better player like Miller.

Fwiw, 247 shows Jones is 5'10" 180 lbs., Miller is 5'10", 185 lbs.

I think IT is high on DeAnthony Garson out of Newton. Can’t remember if that’s the site that’s high on him or not though.

IT is always huge on Newton kids because ETX, and they always have grimy recruitments and a low pan-out rate.

Idk that it’s been reported that we entertained it, but that he wants to do both has been by IT.

I think both Beard and Sark would like to have full-time committed athletes since both programs are in rebuilds. Just my wild speculation.

My wild speculation is that Sark would be fine with Marshall doing whatever and that Beard would want better bball prospects

Looks like our pals in College Station did a great job of selling the SEC. Auburn, Alabama, LSU, and Texas A&M.

Genius 100 year decision.

Hey, we finished 4th! We almost beat Clemson once! Our losses are quall-itt-teeee. Our Hall of Champions is full of...full of something.

Thanks. We'll fill in the blanks, Aggie.

Yup, agreed.  And their “100yr decision”  is a perfect example what happens when one’s contempt for their “rival” outweighs the love of ones self.  Their actions are clouded by hate.
