Digital Horse Racing (ZED & NFTs)

In reading the General Chat on the Zed discord, it sounds like a lot of people have stopped racing all but their strongest horses because the matchmaking and competition being so strong right now.  Despicable Lemon has now run 100 races and I've hit the pause button on races for the moment.  He's still looking pretty strong, especially for what I paid.  I think his odds look even better than the results, so I think waiting a bit to race him more will help maintain his value.

i have no idea how breeding will go.  it looks like you can set your own price for a stud fee.

theoretically, if you are fast clicking and have the ETH, you could mate with any stallion placed in the stud farm.  I see 2 things happening.

- If a stable want to keep the bloodline in-house:  the top Nakamoto and primo racers are going to set insanely high stud fees, then breed in house (and pay themselves back the ETH).  There may be a way to lower the rake amount from ZED by dropping the stud fee just for the time to breed it yourself then raising it again.

- Everyone else will throw out their stallions at rando prices and we will have to wade through the data just like when buying/browsing for horses.  If you have a stallion that's iffy, it might be better to go low at first to at least get paid right off the bat with one of the 3 stud fees available.

i just picked up a buterin genesis z9 nag to breed with.  only a few races with 15 odds but bought for ~$600.  I don't know if the market for fillies is going to go up as we get closer to breeding, but i imagine it will.  Everything else i had seen in that price range was all 45+ odd crap.

Also eyeing this one:  https://opensea.io/assets/matic/0xa5f1ea7df861952863df2e8d1312f7305dabf215/26642

https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/26642

6 races, sub 10 odds in g-race and sub 15 odds in class III in the 5 races so far.  asking .45 ETH ($1200) but probably cannot get at around .3 as there is already a bid at .35 right now.

That's kinda what I'm looking for, but I'm having a hard time paying that much for something that is still basically unknown and looking a little chunky in the middle of the U so far.  I like those odds at that price though, so I'm probably going to just have to bite the bullet on something similar.

I think you're right on the filly market - it's going to go up the closer to breeding we get.

Yea, I have no clue what to expect or what my strategy should be for breeding.  The one thing I'm pretty sure on is I want my own filly that has decent race results/odds to breed with Despicable Lemon.  Finding her is proving to be a real PITA.

i am going to look to pick up a Z2-Z4 Legendary Nak filly and colt after breeding starts.  Should be a ton of them available.  Then you can start adding some of that expensive blood to a stable.

If you want to spend for another U-shaped filly, here is one for 2ETH  https://opensea.io/assets/matic/0xa5f1ea7df861952863df2e8d1312f7305dabf215/12197  will do well if stays in class IV, but profile breaks down in class III.

- my oz&lbs horse has a strong win/place/show profile but sucks at finishing 10+.  just moved up to class I - no idea if that would merit anyone paying for a stud fee, but if I could breed it with a Nak horse that could compete in class I, then having a L-shaped profile would great.

You should look for a filly with a backwards L to breed with oz&lbs... They could throw off a lower class monster and you could probably find one cheap af if you dig around enough.

it helps if you think of ETH like casino chips with little intrinsic value.

i have been following the female sales pretty closely and anything with an established profile is going for a lot.  you got a great deal on Lemon.  unraced Buterin Genesis are still going for a crazy good premium right now.

Geez. Is Reasonable so bad that we can't even get one of our own to plow her?

Reasonable is a boy.

The normal process is that mare's owners get the offspring. The stallion's owners get the stud fee from the mare's owners. I think we've discussed breeding Reasonable and Red Bull. I'm willing to share ownership between the 2 ownership groups and share the breeding fees. No stud fee for Reasonable.

What do the other Red bull and Reasonable owners think?

I’m ok with this. I think you still have to pay a breeding fee to ZED, but it should only be about $100.

This horse sold for 17 ETH (~$42,500) yesterday: https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/362  a Z1 with only its G race completed with 3.14 odds and a 9th place finish.  Bonkers.

Z1 drop price was ~$36K so not that crazy i guess.   not sure what an avg Z1 g-race odds are, but pulling a 3 means it has pretty good potential.  There are a lot of Z1 that run 15+ odds in the g-race.

sub par raced Z2 Nakamoto are going as low as 5 ETH ($12-13K) which the drop price was ~$19K.

you just have to be on at the right place right time to snag stuff like this: https://opensea.io/assets/matic/0xa5f1ea7df861952863df2e8d1312f7305dabf215/8082  this sold for .5 ETH ($1300) yesterday.  drop price was $1600 and the 2 paid races were higher dollar races so it's odds in the cheapest races would be a lot better.

There are lots of just NFT traders that scour the lists and snatch up any bargains then immediately jack the price and list again.

going to look for a genesis Finney filly before breeding starts, but not holding my breath.

Yea, you're right, I forget that the drop prices were so high for the Z1s.

I might change up my strategy and buy a couple of cheap fillies for breeding and hope to get lucky.  Thinking back to looking at Steph Curry's parents - they were nothing special at all, so a lot of this could be random.

Buy a few like this for .2 = https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/23772

Rainbow Doll is already bid up to .37 - are you bidding on it?

And damn, Bingo Baby at .5 is a screaming deal.  Good on those traders that can find deals/value.  It's a tedious process for sure.

no, not bidding on Rainbow Doll.  .4 ETH ($1000) is likely what it is going to take; too much imo for a Z9 that is unproven.  really just looking to buy 'not glue' Buterins Z8/9 ~ $600 range (.2-.25 ETH).  May just wait and try my luck during the next drop which is supposed to happen June 5th/6th or so to snag a Finney filly.  Not sure how they determine the drop prices.  I can't see them doubling from last time though so i think they will still be 'reasonable' and should help drive down the existing unraced genesis market pricing to approach TERA drop prices.

Yeah, i think good horses can come from trash (or not elite) parents.  Here is Gun for Hire's (& sister) parents.  All of them are inverted V-shaped

Trash or not, I can guarantee that King Razor can command whatever stud fee he wants.

I support this.  It was mentioned at some point about trying to get a Genesis mare to breed with Reasonable.  I'd like to do that and see what we come up with.  I'd be willing to put $200 towards the mare and then whatever breeding fees are.  We may make a champion, we will probably make a donkey, but I think with patience, we'll come out no worse than even after races or an auction.

I think there's something we can make work, but I had a rough night so my brain is still a little foggy. But I think this suggestion, as proposed, only benefits the people who have ownership interest in one or the other. I don't think there's any upside for the folks who have an interest in both horses.

Reasonable-only owners:

     - Normal breeding: Get stud fee at market price, no offspring.

     - Proposed breeding: No stud fee, but they get an ownership interest in the offspring that they otherwise wouldn't have gotten.

RB-only owners:

     - Normal breeding: Pay stud fee at market price, get full ownership of offspring.

     - Proposed breeding: Save on stud fee, receive diluted ownership interest in offspring.

Owners of both:

     - Normal breeding: Stud fee is a wash since we're essentially just paying ourselves. Get full ownership of offspring.

     - Proposed breeding: Stud fee is still a wash. Get diluted ownership of offspring.

That's as far as my brain is going to get me right now. Somebody who's better at math can probably come up with some sort of formula where all three ownership groups receive roughly the same benefits. Or someone may point out how I'm completely wrong.

FOMO got the better of me.  I bought the cheapest Z9 filly with a win on the market at .32.  10.5 odds in the G and pretty f'n average everywhere else.  But it does look like the previous owner was just splashing into whatever races popped up, so she may not be as bad as her current record reflects.

https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/21661

Now I need to decide if I want to sell my first horse or put some more fuel in the tank before the drop.  I've had this one listed at .37 but haven't posted anything about it on the for sale board on the Zed discord yet.

i've taken to the notion to just keep any genesis horse no matter how crappy.  who knows what could be sired by that horse.  I listed my non-winner Z7 Finney Colt for about 10 minutes then changed my mind.  I think genesis horses are going to spike right after the drop if we have another wave of people pissed that they could not get in on it.

if you look at the super long term view either

- lol, ZED run has like 5 users and Z1 Nakamotos are $10 for a dozen.

- betting on digital horses catches on, all the genesis horses are dropped and there is still a demand.  There is still going to be a buzz for genesis horses, even crappy Buterins.  does that buzz mean crappy Z10s are going for 2 ETH or just maintaining their value?  who knows

NFTs seem pretty fucking stupid to me, but then i was never a sports card collector or could give fuckall about memorabilia and stuff like that.  I look at the other collections in some of these people's wallets and and am WFT is this shit? But add in the gaming/gambling aspect and the ability to make your own NFTs that could or could not be valuable as a racer or a breeder or to just resell and now sir, you have my attention.

- Also as they add attributes to the horses that you can see, you don't want to have sold off an idiot savant horse that has a stupid high attribute in say speed, but just sucked at all the other ones.  maybe that would be worth something as breeding stock.

I had to look up the conversion for 3.2 ETH. That's fantastic and hilarious at the same time. My dad owned ACTUAL thoroughbreds when I was growing up and I don't think he ever paid much more than that for a horse. Not counting inflation.

food for thought

https://zombie.racing/the-power-of-the-z1-naka-why-we-should-value-the-boys/

tldr - dude thinks that Nakamoto covers (stud fees) could end up being very lucrative based on the fact that Genesis sire can keep an Exclusive or Elite at the same level (but the filly can't).  With an ever expanding base of Exclusive/Elite fillies and a finite number of Genesis studs the supply and demand ratio keeps getting more and more out of whack.

xZED-Breed-Type.png.pagespeed.ic.lB5E-v8Mvb.webp

Quote

This is certainly not financial advice but looking at the supply/demand of the Nakas only, I think we could ‘tentatively’ assume a minimum market price of 0.5 eth for even the most average Nakamoto z2 genesis by the end of the year. If they’re in the stud for a week and all 3 covers are taken that equates to a monthly income of 0.84 ethereum. Over a year that comes to 10.08 Eth! For a z1 its not out of the questions to hit 1Eth per cover, your yearly return hits over 20Eth! The current Naka z1 male floor is 11eth and a z2 4.25eth. Z2’s look pretty good on these numbers!

anyway, you can monkey around with the stud fees but using some fairly conservative numbers it might not take long to recover your costs on buying a Nak for those outrageous prices.   I don't know what the ZED rake is (10%?) on stud fees.   ROI even col is # of months to break even on purchase.

image.png.b87314eac912c3e89a8beddf63838a5b.png

you could make back that fee in 7-9 months of breeding.  Maybe that is why people were willing to pay $20-40K for these things.

Or ZED could get raided by a 3-7 letter acronym government agency and and it all goes tits up.  These guys that were in from day 1 did not pay hardly anything for their Naks (i am guessing) so it is all house money to them.

so with that said, can you buy more ETH by using a kidney as collateral?  asking for a friend.

so i think i see how these NFT grinders are operating.  They look up horses that the owner has not started an auction for yet, then start bidding on them with a low ball offer.  A lot of times there is no activity on the account for weeks+ so owner is probably not up to date on pricing.  If the owner bites, then they keep going through the horses trying to get them all.  It usually takes a few sales for the owner to wake up and check the market.  Most opensea accounts are set up to email the owner when a bid is received.  If you can hook a person that just an NFT collector and got these horses cheap 3 months ago that's where the crazy deals are had.

- It's all the guys with "NFT" in their opensea handle.  I watched them snipe each other up to a certain level, then they are out.  But that's how they get these crazy good deals.  They sorta provoke the horse owner to sell by creating activity on their account.  I saw one that bought an unraced Z1 Nak for 0.85 ETH (yes decimal is in the right place) 7 days ago.  holy S!  But they want to turn around and sell them quickly, so normally they will list at or below floor and drop their price every few hours to get a sale.

anyway, i wish the horse sexytime would hurry up and happen.

Has anyone seen an speculation on the potential drop prices?  wondering if they will stay the same or go down.  the opensea market seems lower (than TERA drop) on the expensive (unraced) horses Z1-Z4 and higher on the Z5-Z10 genesis.  I think a lot of the people who got those horses cheap/early are cashing in and willing to sell below drop prices.

yeah, might target a Z6 or Z7 or maybe just a Buterin Z8.  Those unraced are still selling above drop prices right now.  Everything Z1-Z5 seems to be right at or below drop price.  Z4/Z5 are right at last drop price.  So the value is getting those Z6-Z10 in the drop.  The 3-5x premium for unraced Buterin could be coming down as 1000s more of them should be in the next drop.  so that's why i will target Z6-Z8 for something.  if those Z1-Z4 go for higher than last drop, then the floor will rise on the market.

i scored this bad boy a few days ago https://opensea.io/assets/matic/0xa5f1ea7df861952863df2e8d1312f7305dabf215/1103.  unraced Z3 Szabo colt for about 1/2 of what they were going for in the last drop.  A bunch of these sold really cheap from uninformed sellers and the brokers snagged the 4-5 that were available for 1.75-2.5 ETH and i bought one off of them for 3 ETH.  Market is still pretty high on them around 4 ETH for unraced.  There are only around ~70 genesis horses left each of Z1-Z4, so I think those will jump in price at the drop even though market is at or below.  See the chart below for how many are left and how many sold in the last drop.  This could be the last drop ever for the Z1-Z5.  The market is really picking up on Legendary Nakamotos no matter the racing results probably due to breeding.

I have been bidding like crazy on dormant accounts trying to wake up someone to sell.  There are soooo many Z1/Z2/Z3/Z4 Genesis unraced horses out there in seemingly dormant accounts.  If they stay dormant and since there are only 1000 minted each of those, they will be even more scarce in the game.

I plan on breeding that Z3 and even with setting the fee low around .2 ETH (min would be .1) that would generate .34 ETH per month.  I have not been able to see any ranges for stud fees for unraced.  I think i could get at least .35 ETH per as trash Legendary Szabo floor price is .4 right now.  That makes the pay back time on that 3ETH price about 5 months if I can fill up 3 spots per month.  if this dude is right (https://zombie.racing/the-power-of-the-z1-naka-why-we-should-value-the-boys/), then the demand for the Z1-Z4 genesis should only increase as the demand for Legendary breeding (genesis sire x legendary dame) should increase as more and more legendary fillies are created every month.

Nice snag!

The only flaw I see in your estimated returns is the possibility that breeding isn't left open permanently.  I think Zed is going to be pretty careful about protecting the scarcity/value of horses and I don't see them flipping the switch on breeding and just leaving it open in perpetuity.  That seems like it would be really depressing on values and that's a big part of their future.

Thanks.  guy was advertising on twitter about Z2 and Z3 below floor price.  this one was listed at ~3.6 or so and i put a bid in at 3 and sorta forgot about it.  The Z2 Naka went for just over 6 ETH i think.

yeah, i have not seen anything either way.  breeding is where ZED will get the most money to put back into game and make their nut after drops are done.  Since they have restricted the # of foals and number of covers that can happen every month, I think they will leave it open for a pretty long time; at least 3 months.  All it does is increase the level of horse you need to race as better and better runners are discovered and this turns to a vicious cycle that perpetuates more demand for breeding to keep competing in races.

- This will output a TON of trash horses that may serve no purpose at all.  maybe they come up with a way to players to 'recycle' glue horses for perks/rewards.  That's the biggest downside i see to leaving breeding open indefinitely.  Then you throw in the other variables like how they run in the rain, top speed etc... and some of those trash horses might have a redeeming trait that is worth breeding (match your decent horse that is low in that trait with a trash horse that is high).  Just spitballing

- They also may/will expand the racing tiers.  maybe make sub tiers based on odds with in the class (just guessing).  They have said something about finding places for every horse to race.  As they get more $ into the game and if the base keeps expanding, there is no reason to not expand on the number of races as long as they are still filling up in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm real curious how this next drop plays out.  With breeding coming back soon and many changes taking place, BTC down 30%+,  I would not be surprised to see this drop go much "slower" than the last one. The anticipation on the last drop was huge. I'm not sure this one will carry the same punch. I've completely stopped racing my horses waiting for things to sort out. I have two Z8 horses, both slightly profitable ~+30% ROI but under current racing have no real long term value.  The better horses are known and the ones placing in majority of races now.

For me the dynamic of the game has to fundamentally change to get me racing and interest again. These changes are coming, just waiting on them. Adding new drop horses into the mix won't do much except push my current horses down the list.  I will likely race soon after post drop though as new players start racing their unknown crappy horses.

holy S!  just saw this beast https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/15745

10 races at class I - 6 wins, 2 place, 1 show and then 1 7th.  for sale for 4.5ETH

pulled sub 2 odds in G-race and pretty much sub 4 in all other races.  curious as to why they stopped racing.  maybe it broke the game or something.

looks like the drop and breeding are pushed out.  new drop date is ~Friday 6/11 and then breeding to follow.

can we put reasonable out to stud?  does it cost money to do that?

ZED is saying that breeding will start again back half of June (after the tentatively scheduled drop hopefully next week).  To breed a male horse, it costs nothing to put them up in the stud farm.  If your or another owner want to breed, a fee is paid by the female horse and the male's owner gets to keep a portion of that.  The game gets a cut of every breeding fee.  If you breed your own horse, there is 35% discount on the fee paid.

I have not found anything that explicitly lays out how the process works.

- the male owner commits to put their horse in the stud farm for 1, 3 or 7 days (the longer the stay, the higher your cut).  horses cannot race during this time.  What i don't know is if the fee can be changed while in the stud farm or if you have to wait out the entire period at the set price.

here is a little google sheet that i cobbled together.  you can play around with the bloodline, breed, # days etc.. to get an idea of what fees might there for putting a horse out to stud.  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AWbCuyVrsEwO1XGdN1ObYEZeLAwARxdw/view?usp=sharing

- fields in blue are the inputs.

I think it has the latest formulas as everything changed from when they briefly opened up breeding back in early April.

The market for Legendary and Exclusive Nakamotos has gone through the roof right now.  Everyone is anticipating a scarcity of Nak blood in the breeding pool.
