Seems like a good distance for RB. He was closing hard. Can you put a call into the stables and tell his jock to keep holding him back until the last 500 metres and then let him go?

I was in this race too and yea, Beats Me caught another gear and smashed it.  Looking more and more like you've got a great one there huh?

How many races do you think a horse needs before you can make a pretty educated assessment of its potential?  25 or so?

I just discovered this site as well:  https://zedranks.com/horse/20802

It seems like a Zillow.com type of estimate for horse values.

The odds say a lot quickly but you need at least 25 to see the finish distribution. Maybe 50.

couple of observations

- File under no shit, but racing only the cheapest races has really improved my winning % and 11th place finishes (still can't get any 12th).  Running even the $4-5 races was causing lots of 3rd place and middle finishes.  https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/21001  64 races and no real curve yet.  I think if i can be patient and stick to the cheap races, i might start seeing a better pattern.

- prices on unraced and <5 raced genesis seem to be coming down.  may try to grab some female Buterins Z7/Z8 if they get to $600 range.

Breeding - has anyone seen anything online about real strategy?  I have been trying to see how different finish curves propagate or what curves might make a solid U-shape, but had not found much online from the older players who have had the chance to do it.

- Take Steph Curry.  here are his parents and grandparents and their curves.  Hopefully this shows up.

image.thumb.png.1bb8149830d46ce375fe0a76859979f5.png

So it was not like Steph had perfect U-shaped parents or even grandparents.  pretty much the opposite of U-shaped.  Had a great-grandmother that had a good win/place/show profile.  His Dad has a crap profile. Steph has 6 siblings

image.thumb.png.6a73f92d46dada083cae830709fd3d53.png

again, hopefully this shows up.  Same pops, different moms.  mom is on upper row and sibs are on the bottom.  only one really has a pretty good U or closer to V shaped curve.  You can see the 5th pair - the mom had a V shaped curve, but combined with dad's crappy curve, the result is inverse U.  Same for the 3rd pair.

So, breeding is going to be random as hell.

I'm of the belief that breeding is currently closed possibly because the logic was messed up. This horse gave me pause to the whole thing and whether I wanted to really venture too much further into Zed until things get vetted a little more.  First question is how could this occur. Second bigger question is why this owner is not racing this horse ??

It's a bred horse who has raced 11 times (none since April 10th) and has won every since race. All but latest by a significant margin.

Its WORST odds is 1.47...

@gyroprotagonist  I agree with both of y'all that breeding must have been borked and looking at bloodlines doesn't really give any insight into how a horse came by it's traits.  It all seems random.  Your horse is looking pretty dang good so far I'd say.

Mine has the U shape performance nailed....except for 1st and 2nd place.  https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/20802

I raced it a shit load this weekend and it has fallen all the way down to class V.  I ran three class V races this morning so far and thought for sure his performance would improve at this class.  Finished 3rd, 7th and 10th with the best odds being 10.47.  Maybe if I can stay in class V for a while I can pick up a few more wins and 2nds to improve the U a bit more to sell this one.  In looking at the fields in these level V races, I was surprised to see how many decent horses were in there.

I also see a lot of unrealistic pricing in the market for horses with shit odds and worse results than my own horse.  There are a lot of mediocre horses for sale at .3+ I don't see how there will ever be a market for those horses at that price unless Zed continues to add tons of new users.  I'd like to buy another horse, but finding value is a beating.

I’m with y’all on thinking breeding may have been screwed up somehow. Not sure if that’s the reason it’s closed right now though. They do have an interest in managing volume to keep prices more stable while expanding their user base. Unlimited breeding could lead to massive price swings and scare people away.

I think horses like Steph Curry can always pop up out of the blue, but what will be more telling is what the horses he sires end up looking like. Once he’s got a few pups with other great horses, surely some of them will also be ballers. If not, then breeding is a total crapshoot.

that horse just moved up to class 1 and it did win the first race, but maybe they are waiting for breeding to open up and did not want to have a blemish on their record?  But yeah, they could be making 1ETH per day racing probably.  Maybe ZED put the halt on that horse for some reason.

- I am still unclear on if you can charge whatever you want for the stud service or if it is some set amount based on bloodline etc...

There is always going to be some insider shit going on between the top players and the devs.

yeah, you need to shift that curve, lol.  would be a beast.  but keep racing in V if you can.  I have seen that having the best odds in a race can also mean you will finish 11th or 12th and that should be viewed as good unless you are already strong in Class I.  This horse can sometimes work it's way down to class V  https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/15694  fucking LOL

But see how it finished 12th at his best distance in class V?  It had the best odds, but was sorta 'rewarded' with a 12th place finish.

yeah, i would like think you can breed a curve profile with another curve profile and get a somewhat expected outcome (if you did it 100 times a pattern would emerge), but you can't do that really.  Mares can birf 2 per month.  I think top players probably got to beta the breeding and run some sims.

remember that horse that someone linked where it had the worst curve.  almost totally J-shaped.  https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/7042

image.thumb.png.1570d60e5a25c0482ccc4ae1d45656be.png

You can kinda see how that curve was formed.  This is only the bottom of the chart lol.  Anyway, this poor bastard has some good original blood from https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/6682 a good Z10 Buterin Gen

i wish more of the horses had longer race histories, but if you squint you can sorta see a pattern emerge.  But, if you had an idea about how to shape curves over generations of horses, you could turn all this 'trash' that is being sold right now into something.  It's kinda why i might start looking to snap up cheap genesis fillys just to have more breeding stock to play around with.

But agree, when breeding starts, market is going to flooded with horses.  I think that will be the time to snag some Legendary Nakamotos to add some fancy horse to the stables.

Here's the horse I'm trying to buy:

https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/25064

This is the guy I've been chatting with on Discord about buying this horse for .3:

https://opensea.io/accounts/Markmadison

He's posted screenshots of his Zed account that show he has the horse in his stable, but it's not showing up in his Opensea account?  He said he bought the horse from a guy on Discord and used a broker instead of opensea to avoid fees.  .3 is a good price for this horse but I don't want to get skeezed out of money by someone who doesn't actually own the horse.

He posted a screenshot of the discord chat where the transaction went through last time:

image0.png?width=282&height=610

What do y'all think?  I don't see how the horse wouldn't be in his Opensea account if he really owned it, but I'm still a noob and don't fully understand how all of this connects.

I don't see any way to connect his discord to his stable.  He gave me his full name and his instagram account, it seems like he's a real person (or at least using a real person's info), but the horse is shown as being owned by someone else on Opensea: https://opensea.io/accounts/chain/matic/0xf7237c66330324d7e5786e8a5da1229b285fb54e

I don't know how that is possible?  I've searched the Zed discord for mentions of a broker and it does seem like it's a real thing, but I don't know how it's possible that the same horse would show up as owned by someone else.

State of the Horse - Reasonable Measure

Overall, Reasonable Measure has turned out to be a bad racer. He finally won this past weekend but he rarely finishes in the money. Even worse, he rarely finishes in the bottom 2 so he doesn't drop in class which would potentially mean easier races. He has a classic bell shape finish distribution which isn't good. see image.

In contrast, a U-shaped distribution is considered the Zed ideal as you finish 1st and 12th the most. This earns you the most while keeping you away from the best classes.

The positives

  • We still have $291 (from the original $370) in our racing balance so plenty of funds to keep racing.
  • He's a Genesis (no parents) horse, which will continue to be rarer. He could be worth more in the future.
  • It's believed that the Genesis horses have a higher potential to create good racing offspring with the right mare.

I plan to keep racing him a couple of times per day. I will keep him in the inexpensive races.

Odds are the guy and what he's describing is legit but personally I wouldn't take the chance. I think the fees on opensea are reasonable. The fees fund opensea and quite possible Zed, making both better.

yeah don't know too much about it.  only the seller pays the fee, so it's really of no benefit to you.  if you want the horse via open sea, offer to pay the 2.5%. That's a whopping $26 using ETH at $3500 as an example.  Jumping through hoops to save $26 seems iffy to me.  If you were buying a Z2 Nakamoto for $20K, then yeah that would save the seller $500.

It's a good horse and at .3ETH that is a GREAT deal for that profile and G-race odds + Genesis.  I hope it's legit, but offer to pay the fee and see what they say.  if the deal gets hung up for $26, then it's a scam.

or maybe offer to meet at a well lit Target parking lot to make the exchange.

😂 He told me he's in North Carolina so it would be quite the drive.  I'm thinking he got scammed, or he's a really good bullshitter.  He was going to chat with the guy he bought the horse from and the broker and get back to me. We'll see if I ever hear anything from him.  If that's all the fees are then I'll insist on doing it through Opensea and can bump up the offer to cover the fee - good idea.  It's a good looking horse for sure, when I asked how much he wanted I was expecting at least double that.

If you really want the horse, ask him to calculate the Opensea fees, add the fees and $10 (or whatever) for his troubles and list it on opensea.

The one key is that you want him to list it as negotiable at a much higher amount. Then you make an offer at .3 + fees + $10. He accepts the bid and you get the horse.

A sub-10 odds horse for under .3 seems hard to believe.

I was able to make an unsolicited offer to the owner of the horse on Opensea.  Agreed it's hard to believe.  And why would Zed allow "brokers" to have control of who owns a horse?  That seems to run contrary to everything the blockchain backbone is all about.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts.  I don't think there's any way I'd send funds around outside of the OS marketplace.

It's connected... if you click on his stable in Zed, to right of the name is a discord icon you can click to copy it. His matches.

It's his only horse, so I could see where wouldn't be in his opensea account IF he's never connected to opensea using the account.  Could always just ask his to connect to opensea, doesn't need to list, just connecting would then link so horse shows in his account there.

This is what raises flags for me... ""He acts as an escrow. He gets the horse. You send me the ether. He sends you the horse..." If he's the escrow, the ether and the horse should be sent to him. Also, the fees aren't that high. Seems like a lot of risk for little reward. I don't know if it's possible with Zed, but if so, have him show you the blockchain transaction from when he bought the horse. A screenshot of a discord chat isn't proof of anything.

I remember seeing a warning on Topshot advising not to sell moments outside of their platform due to them not being able to keep the transaction safe. I assume that's applicable to any blockchain tech. ZED and Topshot want you to trade on their platform so they can get the fees, but they don't own the NFT and can't keep you from sending it via other means.

I'm still communicating with him.  I think he's a noob too and may not fully understand how his NFT would be held in a different wallet than what is connected to his OS account.  I don't understand the broker deal though and agree completely with you on the escrow as he describes it.  It's such a good price on that horse that it's worth some brain damage to me to make sure it's bunk before I totally walk away.

@SquishMitten

One worry about buying offline is whether someone has hacked the owner's account. I believe Zed has locked some horses because they've been declared stolen and wrongfully sold. Now that could also happen with Opensea as well but at least you as the buyer should have some protection if you followed all of the Zed/Opensea policies.

I'm going through with it.  The middleman posted in the general Zed chat and tons of people were vouching for him.  The seller transfers the horse to the middleman (East Coast Stables) through the Zed settings and then after I send funds he transfers it to me.  A lot of verified users and/or stables that I have heard of were vouching for this guy.  He posted a screen shot when the horse hit his stable and I checked on OpenSea to see if the other horses I could see in the screenshot were in his stable and they were.

Hopefully my new horse doesn't wake up laying in an ice bath with his kidneys missing.

This one is interesting.  Z5 Genesis Finney mare.  last drop they went for $3800.  this one listed at $2800.  I have scouring for a Genesis filly/mare to bring in to the stable before breeding starts.

now only 1 race that drew 16 odds, but this was back in Dec 4th.  I have heard through some messages with the kyh guy that there was a update to ZED that changed some of the horses odds quite a bit and that happened 'in Dec' but not sure on the date.  so could be a gamble on if better or worse (or no change).

Also, please check paid races when looking at profiles.  look at this horse.  https://knowyourhorses.com/horses/1841 you would think what a stud and the last 3 races where it drew 45 odds was some kind of glitch.  but those were the only paid races of its life.  I have been able to enter exactly 1 free race in all my time here and only seen 2 pop up when i am looking for races. so i just assumed the vast majority of races are paid and that W is a W, but the comp level is way better in paid vs free.

Holy shit.  I just raced Despicable Lemon in my first race and he f'n smashed it.  He won by almost 2 seconds in a 1400m race: https://3d-racing.zed.run/replay/CSP3ayhI

I'm trying not to get too excited, but it seems like I could have a bird's nest on the ground here.  He's got 5 wins and 5 lasts in 31 races with <10 odds at every length except for 2400m.

I can't decide if I should sit on him now that he just bumped back up to class IV with a 16% win rate and 29% ROI or if I should keep racing to see if I can build out a more well-defined U shape?

I think you need to race him. Get 50-100 races in him to see where he stands.

Sounds like a good pony. I’d keep him running!
