IMHO, it's the greatest country song ever written.   "He Stopped Lovin' Her Today" is the greatest performance, but "Sunday Morning" is the greatest song.

Hard to believe that "Country Music" has devolved into songs about pontoon boats and mud tires, but here we are.

If I hear another fucking affected southern accent in a country song my head is gonna explode. The crap they peddle today as country music is an abomination against man.

Anybody that writes or records a song that features mud tires, tailgates, moonshine (or "good stuff"), or just mentions F150s in any capacity...they need to me sent to GITMO.

See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans,
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile
Once he had a future full of money, love, and dreams,
Which he spent like they was goin' outta style
And he keeps right on a'changin' for the better or the worse,
Searchin' for a shrine he's never found
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse,
Or if the goin' up was worth the comin' down
He's a poet, he's a picker
He's a prophet, he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.
He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars,
And he's traded in tomorrow for today
Runnin' from his devils, lord, and reachin' for the stars,
And losin' all he's loved along the way
But if this world keeps right on turnin' for the better or the worse,
And all he ever gets is older and around
>from the rockin' of the cradle to the rollin' of the hearse,
The goin' up was worth the comin' down
He's a poet, he's a picker
He's a prophet, he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.
There's a lotta wrong directions on that lonely way back home.

Well, when you're a Phi Beta Kappa jock who earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford and subsequently flew helicopters for the Army Rangers . . . I guess it's an OK line.

point of order:  Kris graduated from Ranger school before he went to Rucker for helos.   He didn't fly to support Ranger ops.  Mofo was Ranger qualified!

So, it's even a better line.

A couple of years ago, Amanda Shires summed it up perfectly.   "I can hold my breath longer than I can listen to country radio."

And as far as spiritual lyrics...it's hard to beat this verse.

Tell me Lord, if you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from you
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you.

And I would stack this performance of this song up against "He Stopped Loving Her Today".  Damn, Kris could write.
