The Gallant Knight was the shit. In my day, it probably peaked in 2009. I believe it closed December 31, 2020.

Question for the old timers, when was Rice Village safe and cool place to hang out? I work with a guy that spent a lot of his youth bouncing around Rice Village bars.

Is rice village no longer safe? jesus I’m old

Rice village? Shit, I felt more comfortable creeping the 5th and 3rd wards. I only went down there to eat lunch a few times with my wife when she worked in the medical center. And a few times when I worked off bissonet and the Texadelphia was down there. Can’t recall the last time I was down there.

Scarier than the Gallant Knight back in the day?

Well I think I’m @billfromlaketravis’s age or so, the Gallant Knight was my Thursday spot in 2008-2009 (before Vintage Fridays, RIP) and was definitely not a scary place. The Silver Slipper wasn’t either - older crowd that got dressed up for dancing and Zydeco. Admittedly, it felt a little voyeuristic in that we were crashing in on a spot that was totally off the spatial geography of white Houston. But those moments waiting for an Uber to confirm they’d come pick up you at 1 am in the Nickel? Pretty terrifying.

Vintage was awesome. Why does every successful club get burned down for the insurance money?

Rice Village never has been not safe.

The original Galant Knight wasn't in the village. It was a little shack on Holcombe and closed 2006.

Wait, someone seriously thinks Rice Village isn’t safe?

The guy who thought it was rough says he's from Lake Travis (according to his user name), he's clearly a bubble boy.

Houston bars I miss:

- Jackson Hole: What a name for a bar in the Montrose. It was a solid post college bar. It's the Pit Room now.

- Gallant Knight on Bissonnet: I think it's an Orange Fitness now. Oh well, at least West U moms can keep it tight.

- Jimmie's Ice House: I don't really miss it, but it was so much better than Bobcat Teddy's.

- Vintage: Another top post college bar. Probably the best. You had to look sharp because you were absolutely going to run into people you knew.

- Bubba's on Washington: Nice deck. Really a shitty bar. Their pot roast came out of nowhere and surprised you. We'd have rush parties there to recruit in Houston. Yeah, I didn't ask about the logistics, and I wasn't in leadership, so I think I'm square with the TABC.

Honorable mention: Sherlock’s. It was a chain, but a solid pub and much needed in certain parts of town.

Yeah, that dive was was on Holcombe. It reopened on Bissonet in 2008. Wasn't the same

That sounds like a terrible idea... like opening a TGI Fridays in the old Liberty Lunch space and expecting it to draw the same crowd. Probably best I missed that.

About the same time I moved away was when Sammy's opened up in 2016 Main, hoping to rekindle the remaining lightning in a bottle from Gallant Knight (or as I recall the name, "Monroe's Gallant Knight").

I lived across the street for a while. Good times. Sorry Bill but Jackson hole was a douche factory. Where was vintage? Don't remember that one.

A lot of hot chicks at Jackson Hole. I probably shouldn't have lead off with it, but I'll stand by it.

Vintage was on the corner of Shepherd and Kipling. Across the street from the PetSmart. Link: https://www.yelp.com/biz/vintage-lounge-houston

Jackson’s was a solid Saturday spot. It’s still there, really, as The Patio.

At its peak, Vintage was like the Studio 54 of Houston. If you went to UT (and especially if you were Greek) you knew 80% of the crowd. I’d argue that it was one of the best post-grad bars to have existed anywhere in the country at the time, besides Smith Point in DC when the Bush twins graduated.

True Recession millennial grads had their moms drop them off in the PetSmart parking lot.

Fing this. Tech, SMU, LSU, and TCU Greeks were also all over the place.

That was us.  Mostly Texas grads.   I want to say we went to Vintage routinely in like 2004 and 2005.  But I could be off on timeline.

I grew up about ten blocks east of Rice Village (corner of Bissonnet and Mandell, essentially) in the Oil Bust years. Rice Village was not unsafe in those days but it was a little bit seedy. The Village Theater was screening porn and you could smell the weed coming out of reggae club Caribana in the Rice Stadium parking lot. I was going in there at 14 and getting served stout rum punches with no ID whatsoever. Danny Goeb later had a sports bar at Rice and Kirby and a Little League buddy worked there and had the keys. We'd go there after practice and drain a good portion of a keg. Hungry International also didn't care too much about the drinking age.

Right up to about 2008 or so, Kahn's Deli was a front for high-end weed. After Katrina, some New Orleans bikers tried to horn in on the business and the Kahn kid called in a favor from the Russian mob. Then he sold out, and it went out of business, because the buyer didn't know what all Kahn Jr was doing to keep the place afloat.

This makes sense now. The Russians tried to make a go of it after but failed miserably.

Great sandwiches. News to me on the other thing.

Gallant Knight was a house on Holcombe for years. Moved to where Timberwolf was on Bissonnet & Kirby (both places were great and safe).  My older brother was in town for the first time in a while and I took him to Timberwolf (he’d never been).  We walked in and the dwarf came out of the bathroom on rollerblades and skated to the bar.  My brother looked at me and said “well, it can only go downhill from here.”

Someone mentioned Vintage (on Kipling), that place was a shithole.  Ask Huge.

Better question is who remembers Birraporetti’s on West Gray?

Hops House on Hwy 6 used to be amazing, as was Big John’s Icehouse (at least in high school).  I was served the last Lone Star at Kay’s (/csb).  And TK Bitterman’s will always have a place in my heart.
