41 Years Ago Tonight

I was pretty young then, but here's what left the biggest impression on me from that game:

Quote

Leiding announced his presence at Texas literally with the opening whistle of his freshman year. ABC had Texas and Arkansas start the 1980 season on the evening of Sept. 1st. Arkansas received the opening kickoff and before the returner reached the 20 yard line, Leiding launched himself over a potential Razorback blocker and knocked the returner out cold.

That passage was written by Stephen Ross after Jeff Leiding passed away just over 7 years ago. I tried to find video of it but couldn't. It was the birth of a Longhorn Legend. RIP Jeff!

I was sitting on about the 30 yard line on the east side of DKR for a Monday night game against Arkansas.  ABC TV had moved the game to September 1 because they wanted the UT/Ark game to be the first televised game of the new decade.  There was great energy on campus in the run up to this game, and anticipation for the new season.  We destroyed piggie, in what started out to be a very promising, but ultimately disastrous season.  I just realized that we are now exactly the same amount of time removed from that game, as that game was removed from Germany's invasion of Poland.  No wonder the youngsters think I'm old...I am old...furk.

Do you know Armybrat?

I was there, also on the east side and also recall Leiding blowing up the Arkansas return man. Even in the packed stadium (with its many gaps to allow sound to escape), the sound of the “CRACK!” filled the air. Leiding was also injured on the play, not sure if kept him out the rest of the year, my memory fails because like ‘83 upthread, I’m also old.

That was the start of my senior year at UT.

Went to Jorge's, which was then on Guadalupe (?) just south of the Campus. Damn, those margaritas back then were killer. Both my date and I had 2 of those things. And we were feeling no pain.

Had the flask of Jack Daniels in the boot for the game. Found parking near the Nighthawk on the Drag.

If I recall correctly, my date that night had a fairly liberal definition of her own morality.  (The Golden Age of Promiscuity) So, we hoof it to the game.

Electric atmosphere, and Jack was doing his job ... until ...

About midway through the 4th quarter, the date looks at me, says... I don't feel so good, and then BOOM!  Passes out in the stands.

Oh, the joys of being young.

Jorge’s on Guadalupe, it was the best…

…well right after the Golden Age of Promiscuity.

It's immensely disappointing that there doesn't seem to be any video of this game anywhere.

Yeah, I don't understand this at all.  This was a nationally televised game on ABC, so there has to be video of it somewhere.  You'd think LHN could work it into the rotation.

25 years ago last night I got laid.

Just got laid and it was fucking sensational.  My wife and I were at that Arky game on the east side at the 15 yard line.  I remember Bill Flemming was the sideline reporter for ABC.  Oh, yeah.  41 years later, I can still deliver the goods.

Yep.  Had Leiding's career not gotten sidelined by injuries we would mention him with Nobis, Hager and Johnson.  He was that good.

6 years ago,  I was in a jury pool where the defense attorney (an acquaintance who was my age) referenced the difference between the sexual mores of today and those when we were young.  Back in the day, I thought I led a pretty dionysian lifestyle, but my behavior wasn’t even in the ballpark compared to the behavior of young people today.  As an old, I would still be clueless had it not been for that jury summons.

That was back before AIDS was invented and anything you could possibly get could be cured with a shot.

Porn had just begun to become more mainstream.

Long enough past the 60s, hair everywhere, birkenstock wearing tree hugging sexuality so young women were more astute and aware.

Oh yes. Good times. Good times.

I honestly don't remember, but i may have been at that game. If not that one, then others that year. Us youngsters used to ride our bikes to the stadium from our hood in south austin and get in for free during half time.

edit: just saw it was a monday night. Nevermind.
