Jon Favreau’s Star Wars TV Series is Set Before The Force Awakens
By Cooper Hood

Jon Favreau finally reveals the first details regarding his Star Wars TV series, notably when it takes place in the saga’s timeline. Lucasfilm is broadening the franchise’s reach since reviving the saga in 2015 on the big screen. While the films receive most of the attention, there are tons of content coming through comics, novels, and television. Lucasfilm and Disney are bringing another animated series to life this fall in Star Wars Resistance, but they also recently announced that Favreau will be shaping the first live-action Star Wars TV show.

Lucasfilm and Favreau refrained from sharing any information regarding the series when it was first announced, but questions still arose, such as how long the series would last, when it would debut, and what characters will appear were. While there are certainly a lot of questions surrounding the project, possibly the biggest is, when does it takes place in the saga?

Jon Favreau answered that question at the world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story, telling Nerdist that it not only takes place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens but also that it’s set seven years after the Battle of Endor, in which the Rebellion defeated the Emperor and crushed the Empire once and for all.

The placement of Favreau’s series after the Battle of Endor but still decades before The Force Awakens is a big deal. It is the latest example of Lucasfilm finally opening up that major gap in the timeline for additional stories to be told. Resistance is going to tell stories leading right up to The Force Awakens by the time everything is likely said and done. Whatever Favreau’s show is, it will further bridge that gap between the movies.

Even though Favreau says his series will feature entirely new characters, the placement in the timeline could allow for some creative cameos, just like what the studio did with Star Wars Rebels. There’s no telling how closely tied to the movies the series will be, but this could certainly be a place to briefly explore the life of Boba Fett and/or other original trilogy characters. Boba Fett isn’t a necessary inclusion, but Lucasfilm is definitely keen to the idea of using him again. If Favreau’s series takes a look at the underbelly of the Star Wars universe, as some suspect, there’s certainly a chance for the bounty hunter to make his return.

However, Favreau’s tease of cutting edge technology could be an indication that this series is still a ways off. He’s currently in the writing stage and there’s no word on when production will begin. Plus, he’s already got his hands full with The Lion King and then The Jungle Book 2. Furthermore, the TV series won’t debut until Disney’s streaming service is actually available, which won’t be until next year at the earliest. Regardless, knowing that the untitled Star Wars TV series takes place before The Force Awakens opens up several possibilities.
