So I had an issue with my Jeep Cherokee yesterday

Pretty simple really - dead battery.  Bought a new battery and it's running fine now.

However.....during diagnosis, I wanted to push it out of the way in the parking lot it was in.  It's keyless with a fob so getting it into neutral was a challenge. I had to pop the shifter panel and push the override button to shift to neutral.  But it still wasn't in neutral - wheels were still locked.  What did I need to do to really push it?

Parking brake?

I do see some reference here and there to needing to step on the brake still to make it shift.  You'd think that would stop the lever from moving, as it does in normal operation, and also that that "interlock" is electrically operated so also fuct with a dead battery.  But still  . . . .

So many shifters now are nothing more than switches, I don't know what the hell you do in similar circumstances.  There must be a workaround.
