TFB says Quay is all Texas and if he doesn't end up in the class it would Texas choice ( a distinct possibility)

That's been the feel from the 9.95ers as of late. Basically, he could commit any second but don't expect that he ends up in the class.

Without knowing any of the details, hopefully he can pull his shit together and have a productive college career. It's a hell of a lot easier to provide a great life for your kid with a degree than without one.

1) I thought RGBIII's post about TFB meant he WOULD end up in the class, if Texas took him.

2) Outside of his commitment issues and the drama related to that, does he have off the field issues?  (Handlers/$$/grades?)  If he does not, why wouldn't Texas take him at some point, if he made a credible commitment?

3)  Purely from a football standpoint, is he a clear take?

1) Right. He wants in, don't expect the staff to take his commitment is how I interpreted that.

2) If Texas is waffling on whether he's a take or not proves out that he does have off-field issues, imo. Because, see #3.

3) Yes.

Possible.

- I interpreted it as a statement not about commitment, but about whether he would actually end up in the class or not.

- So, ignoring commitment/"accepting" commitment, I took their statement to mean a) he wants to be in the class b)  at signing time, if he's not in the class, it's because we've said no.

We'll see ....

I fundamentally don't understand how what you're saying is different than what he said more succinctly

He has off the field issues, he is clearly a take on talent, the staff is holding off on accepting his commitment but I have heard that is because they dont want another public decommit in addition to his off the field stuff (it isnt a legal issue) so they are just waiting till further along in the year to allow him in.

He's already publicly committed and decommitted twice. That's a big red flag for them already.

I recall his two decommitments. He does seem like a "today's special" kind of recruit ala Jordan Elliott. I thought there was something more when off the field issues were mentioned like legal trouble or poor grades.

No one has ever mentioned anything specific that I’ve seen, but he had a kid at 17 and goes to skyline, so  some other red flags, like qualification concerns, wouldn’t be surprising.

It also doesn't really matter what they are. He's a talented kid with off the field issues. Knowing what those issues are won't give more insight into whether he comes to Texas or not, and speculating is just Surly board porn.

Jordan Elliott was a pain in the ass, but he also turned out to be a really good football player at Mizzou. I get being annoyed by guys like him, but I don't feel great about the idea of Herman turning away talent because they are annoying teenagers, especially when he's an annoying grown man.

We already took his commitment once, qualification concerns didn't stop it then. I guess maybe the grade situation technically could have drastically changed since then, but if there aren't any legal issues, I'd guess this is Herman being a stickler about a kid's indecisiveness again a la Noah Cain.

Oh sweet a Bmore/DC recruit CB'd to Bama. I see great things for us in this recruitment.

There is apparently data that suggests the college success rate of people who decommit multiple times during their recruitments is pretty low.

We also didn't kick out Elliott, he left to be with Brick.

Well to be fair, Elliott was at one time a silent commit to a Herman lead UH program. He must have fallen in love with Brick, but the results worked out well for him.

Ok this offer's interesting. The Cal offer is at least a good sign - Wilcox knows his shit on defense. Penn State, his "dream school" (barf) just offered as well.

Maybe Drayton hasn't quite mastered IG yet and thought he was DMing with TreVeyon Henderson?

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we only take Brooks. This class is deep enough that I think our current depth could support reallocation of that spot in the class. A wr perhaps...maybe a pass rusher project...

Considering at this time is very funny and sad. As of today I am hoping for more to be excited about at that position but perhaps Brooks turns out to hit a high ceiling.

He’s a top 3 WR in the state.  The rankings don’t do him justice because Skyline doesn’t have a QB that can throw.  He tears it up and dominates at all the camps and 7 on7 tournaments.  Bama and LSU would take his commitment, if that’s any indication of his talent.

Following this recruitment, he’s a 17 year old that may not have the right guidance or support to help him through the recruitment process.  He’s committed and de-committed twice.  He wants to commit to Texas but also still wants to take visits.  He also had a baby but that isn’t why Texas isn’t taking him.  Herman just doesn’t want to be dumped twice.  They will recruit him and take his commitment close to signing day from what it seems.  Being 17, he may also go to a visit to LSU and commit on the spot...

LSU boards act like he's behind others on the board at WR.

LSU has a pretty great crop of in-staters (Thomas, Hilton, Pazon) that their boards will be pretty familiar with. Fud has been banging the drum for offering all of them so we can get the ones LSU has to pass on for national talent, Pazon specifically who can FLY.

If you're LSU, you take any of the highly regarded national guys (Quay may be in this group), then fill the rest of your spots with in-staters. Boards always favor local products.

Mike at Night (Notes and Comments from the story):

Spoiler

— As I mentioned earlier today, Texas has been in contact with Michigan wide receiver graduate transfer Tarik Black. Despite some online rumors, I was told by sources close to the situation that there is nothing imminent between both sides. While the Longhorns need a big body on the outside, remember that Black has yet to visit Texas. In a case like this when rumors start to come about, pay attention to the basic details. While Texas could take his transfer without him visiting, it’s unlikely that would happen, based on the way the staff has operated in the past.

Quaydarius Davis released a top six yesterday that included Texas along with LSU, SMU, USC, Oklahoma State and Florida. As I mentioned in the past, it looked like Texas was close to having Davis back in the class a month or two ago, but things got complicated. This is actually a case where the COVID-19 shutdown might help the chances for Texas and Davis to reunite. Still, there are a few hurdles to clear.

— I spoke to another college team source today who indicated to me that out of state recruiting might be out of the question in this cycle. Not only will the visit timetable me condensed, but parents might also be more apprehensive sending their kids away following this pandemic. Fortunately, Texas is loaded in-state in 2021, but the Longhorns are a bit behind in the class. It will be interesting to see how the dynamics change. (later clairified that the new coaches are behind: "They don’t have a lot of ties to this area and are just getting familiar with these kids. They also didn’t have the chance to build a strong relationship through multiple visits during the spring.")

— I checked in with some sources regarding four-star Katy Taylor offensive lineman Bryce Foster. There’s been some recent talk that Foster is trending towards Oklahoma, and I was able to get the latest. Oklahoma is and always has been a strong threat for Foster. In fact, last year I wrote that Oklahoma would be the bigger obstacle for Texas than Texas A&M in my mind. Foster visited Oklahoma shortly before the COVID-19 shutdown, and that visit is fresh on his mind. Foster has always been very patient and stern about sticking to his timeline, and it would surprise me to see him make a decision without taking his final visits.

— I also checked in with sources regarding four-star Cy-Fair running back LJ Johnson. It sounds like the race for Johnson is intensifying as Georgia and Stanford are ramping up their efforts. I checked in with a source near Johnson who told me not much has changed in his recruitment. A source at Texas told me they felt good about where they stood with Johnson, but there were multiple irons in the fire for multiple backs. I’m not sure I’d predict Johnson to Texas right now if given a choice between the Longhorns and the field, but I don’t think they are out of it by any means.

Comment notes from Roach:

  • Texas is in a good spot with Camar Wheaton and Jonathon Brooks, on the offensive line I feel things are improving a bit with the Brockermeyers, and there are defensive linemen like Jordon Thomas and a great spot for Landon Jackson.
  • Texas is in the race with Fatheree but I think they are further behind.
  • Both sides decided to go their separate ways with Brandon Campbell.

LJ Johnson going to Stanford would be hilarious all around

This is the kind of shit Hamm used to always post and you could always tell when it came directly from the kid or his circle. In the race? Texas hasn't even bothered to click the link to see what day the race would be on before closing the tab out of sheer apathy.
