Joseph Cook: Tommy and James Brockermeyer to Alabama

Quote

Tommy Brockermeyer, a five-star offensive tackle, and James Brockermeyer, a four-star center prospect, committed to Alabama today over mutual finalists of Auburn, LSU, and Texas. Tommy and James, the brothers of current UT linebacker Luke Brockermeyer, the sons of former Texas All-American Blake Brockermeyer, and the grandsons of former Texas offensive lineman Kay Brockermeyer chose Alabama over a school they have deep familial connections with.

Why? Both are highly-rated and have legitimate dreams to get to the NFL, but especially so for Tommy. He’s a 6-foot-6, 280-pound tackle with five stars to his name. Since Blake was drafted by the Panthers in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft, 11 Longhorn offensive linemen have been selected in the NFL Draft. Alabama had over 11 offensive linemen selected in the NFL Draft in the *last decade*.

The rationale behind what was a business decision is abundantly clear. Like any... *any* offensive lineman recruit, they want to see evidence they’ll be developed and utilized. Texas’ 7-5 regular season record including disappointing offensive line sputterings versus Oklahoma, Baylor, and Iowa State assuredly are part of it. Tom Herman and Herb Hand did not do enough on the field last season to convince Tommy and James that Texas was the place for them.

The host of evidence available for Alabama was enough to overcome the significant amount of emotional connections the brothers had to Texas. Where does Texas turn to next for tackles? The Humidor today explains Still, as recruits, many of those players are seen as steps down from the Brockermeyers. Compound that with not only missing one potentially elite offensive lineman, but two, and today is a tough day for Texas recruiting.

This might be the worst miss of Tom Herman’s time at Texas. There’s time to recover, but it’s hard to fight back from the painful original sting.

Because saying “fuck them” because they didn’t choose your school, and blaming their Dad for skipping over a school who’s fan base is calling for the coach’s removal when he could send them to the best football school in the country, is beneath you.

Are you from the football board? Better yet, are you new to Surly? This is the Atlantic City of the Internet - always descending, but yet to find rock bottom.

Can someone fill me in on what happened with Turner? That recruitment was very quiet and last I recall we weren't thought to be leading, now all of a sudden he's on commitment watch?

Carl, who has been very right about a lot of things the past 2 weeks, said his commitment video is complete and it's for the good guys. We'll see.

You underestimate my pettiness.

So what if he got both Brocks but whiffed on Sanders and Bowman? I see Bowman as a 5 star.

I'll take those two over Tommy and the brother package deal.

It shouldn't be either or, it should be errbody but we decided to go 8-5 and not have a lineman drafted since the great depression.

Like I've said before, if we play football this year it's Big XII title or bust and anything less will be a colossal failure.

No, and we have no idea if that is true. But, the older son is on the UT football team so there is scuttlebutt that the turmoil last year and coaching changes were brought to Blake's attention.

Well, crap.  Saban has huge turnovers in his coaching staff every year.  The only stable coach at Bama is Saban....apparently, works for them.

Mike Roach: What's next for Texas in offensive line recruiting?

Quote

It wasn’t supposed to turn out this way.

2021 set up to be a monster class for offensive line recruiting. The in-state talent was as deep as it’s been in a decade at the position and it was headlined by a Texas legacy three generations deep in Tommy Brockermeyer. Texas was also set up with an emerging Duncanville pipeline and four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd. Add in names like Bryce Foster, Jonah Miller, Reuben Fatheree, Matthew Wykoff and Donovan Jackson, and it was hard to see Texas striking out completely.

The Longhorns were banking on a strong fall season, but COVID-19 put that in doubt as well. Is it time to hit the panic button up front? Let’s take a look at where Texas can go moving forward.

Still on the board

Of the primary candidates still on the board, the two biggest are Savion Byrd and Bryce Foster. Byrd seems to be waiting, but while Texas once had the edge in his recruitment, the Longhorns have been on a downward trend for quite a while. SMU leads on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, but LSU and Oklahoma are also involved. Texas must do anything possible to regain footing with him.

Foster was once trending to Texas as well last summer, but time allowed other schools to make a move. Oklahoma is the trendy pick and Texas A&M holds significant ties to the family. Foster said he’d like to wait to take his official visits to differentiate one school from another, but that might not happen now. Foster maintains everyone is even, but my guess would have Texas in third place at best right now.

Jacksonville (Fla.) Bishop Kenny offensive lineman Michael Myslinski is also a factor. A family friend of Herb Hand’s, Myslinski visited Austin on his own a few weeks ago to get a look at the campus. He spoke highly of Texas and the Longhorns could be in the mix with schools like Iowa, Maryland and Florida State. Iowa currently holds the 247Sports Crystal Ball lead, but Maryland feels confident as well.

New options

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Garland Lakeview Centennial center Ezra Oyetade-Dotson offered by Texas soon. The Longhorns have been talking with him over the last month and getting to know the All-American. A fan favorite and rising prospect, Oyetade-Dotson has the potential to be one of the top interior linemen in the state of Texas.

Georgetown offensive lineman Connor Heffernan could be the next in-state prospect the Longhorns move on. A Baylor commit, Heffernan ranks among the Top 70 in the state of Texas. The Longhorns would have to flip him from his current commitment. Canon Boone from Dickinson should be a guy to keep an eye on as an offensive tackle candidate. At 6-foot-4, 280 pounds, Boone has the room and mobile ability offensive line coaches look to build on. Colorado, Mississippi State, Purdue, and Virginia Tech are the schools at the top for him.

Argyle tight end Jasper Lott is likely headed for a future at offensive tackle. At 6-foot-6, 255 pounds, Lott is likely to play above 300 pounds. Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado and LSU have all offered. Mineola offensive lineman Jackson Anderson and Desoto offensive lineman (and UCONN commit) Yakiri walker are others that could land on the radar at tackle.

247 made it rather clear the Brockermeyers were headed to Bama quite some time ago, nothing new. If it wasn't for a decade of futility Herman would've had a chance to land those kids, Bama is a juggernaut that has been pumping out OL talent to the NFL for years. Texas is a program struggling to produce 4th and 5th rounders and win 8 games a year.
