So there’s a simple explanation for the Brock twitter follow. Six years ago, Charlie Strong met Ms. Brock at a fundraiser and with his wife fucking panache decided that he had to have her. But seeing Mr. Brock he knew he had to play the long game. Even then it was apparent the kids would be huge prospects, so Charlie set about to destroy the program to ensure that the Brocks would go elsewhere and create a split in the family. After losing the Kansas Charlie knew he had succeeded. He laid in wait for a few more years until the kids committed to Bama and then activated his sleeper agent, Brian Carrington, to follow Ms. Brock on twitter and destroy the family. Fuck Charlie Strong is so smart.

Except, Charlie Strong is an analyst at BAMA! Indeed, he won. Kristy secured.

Probably reality is setting into mom’s head that she’s going to have to fly into bumfuck Tuscaloosa to watch these two play for an asshole cheater when she could have had all 3 sons play within a drive at her alma mater.  Probably not happy that the entire longhorn community doesn’t want them near Austin.  She’s probably pissed at what Luke is going to have to deal with playing for Herman now that he’s faced this mild public humiliation for not getting 3rd generation legacies to come play for us.  Good job Blake...

Random thought that is a little off topic. For the 2021 season, I think you're going to see teams adding seniors who received an extra year of eligibility but who don't count against scholarship limits being added to the contenders in attempts to play for a championship. For example, we're going to see Bama add 20 extra seniors to their already overfull roster.

The 2020 season will be about managing lack of roster depth, while 2021 will be about contenders filing holes and adding talent with 5th/6th season seniors.

The guys that stick around are either a) not NFL guys, or b) need more tape. The need more tape guys aren't likely to go to a contender to ride pine, and the not NFL guys are probably just depth at a contender.

I don't think you're wrong by any stretch, I just think it will be more about upgrading depth over adding impact starters.

Suchomel did a Turner interview after his visit. No news there other than Turner is quoted as saying Texas is telling him he's an SDE.

That probably isn't long term true, but it is what he's being sold today.

For the time being, we can credibly show him Broughton and Collins playing there right now

They seem to be really inconsistent about projection. They'll go nuts on a guy like JoJo Earle and project him as a running back, which I believe is why he's in the 80's. Then, they'll leave guys like Sanders out because they can't project his skill set to DE effectively.

The whole spin is "most in-depth evaluations and rankings, ever" and they are getting lost in the weeds a bit.

Somewhat related roster question: does the automatic waiver basically give the incoming 2020 freshman an opportunity to have 6 years to play 5  years + 4 games? Meaning, all 2020 freshman can play 10 games this season and still have 4 years of eligibility. Then next year they can play 4 games, redshirt, and still have 4 years of eligibility?

If so, seems like no reason to go out of your way to red shirt guys this year. Obviously the great ones will be gone in 3 or 4 years regardless.

(Mike Roach) The Stampede: Notes and updates on 2021 targets

Quote

Believe it or not, there will be high school football in Texas this week. As the 2021 class gets underway (at the 4A and below levels), Texas will try to fill out the needs in the 2021 class. The Longhorns landed a new quarterback over the weekend in Austin High's Charles Wright, and I've got a little bit more on him and his plans once he makes it to campus. Can the Longhorns finish off with their needs on the offensive side of the ball and where do they stand with the elite running back targets in Texas?

Defensive recruiting has been strong during this cycle, but Texas still needs a strong finish, particularly in the front seven. After a weekend of checking in with sources and talking with kids, I feel we have some answers on where these prospects are leading. In this week's edition of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly gathering of recruiting intel, I complete a whiparound of the major targets for Texas and look at where the Longhorns stand with each of their major targets left on the board.

—Charles Wright is the newest member of the Texas class. The former Iowa State commit flipped over the weekend and it was really a dream come true for the Austin High School passer who grew up in a Longhorn family. I talked to Charles off and on throughout the weekend and we discussed what was in his future. Wright made it clear that he understands the challenges at Texas when it comes to finding playing time, and he understands the type of talent that Quinn Ewers possesses. Wright is almost the perfect program guy to take in this class because his dreams of playing at Texas will have him locked in. Don’t expect for him to settle for a seat on the bench though. Wright made it clear to me that he was coming to compete, and he felt the job was as winnable at Texas as it is anywhere else. He’s a very competitive kid, so I expect him to push whoever he’s competing with once he reaches campus.

—It sounds like Oklahoma had a good recruiting weekend with their “Sooner Summit.” Texas target Camar Wheaton did make it up this weekend, and I was told he had a strong experience. As far as his recruitment, a key source near Wheaton told me that the visit went well and he enjoyed hanging out with the other guys. This source didn’t feel like there was any major movement with Wheaton’s recruitment at this point. If anything, Oklahoma probably grabbed the edge following the visit, but Wheaton still hasn’t made a decision. LSU and Alabama are two of the other schools in the running, but I’ve been told that Wheaton is close to narrowing down to a final two. I wasn’t told for sure who would make it, but it sounds like it will be a Texas/Oklahoma battle.

—If Cy-Fair running back LJ Johnson picks Texas, that would make things easier for Wheaton. In checking with sources near Johnson, I continue to hear that Texas remains in a good spot for the four-star running back. I still feel good about where my Crystal Ball prediction sits, and I think that Stan Drayton is likely turning up the heat on both of his top targets. Drayton will have to fight off some other schools including Texas A&M who previously held the lead in this recruitment, but I think Texas is in the top position as of now.

—I’m very interested to see how wide receiver recruiting turns out in 2021. Texas holds commitments from Pompano Beach (Fla.) Monarch’s Jaden Alexis and New Orleans (LA) Warren Easton’s Casey Cain. As the staff tries to close this part of the class down, things are starting to get tricky. Let’s start with Ketron Jackson. I wrote last week that Arkansas was making a ferocious push. Despite just about everyone near Jackson pushing him to Texas, the loyalty he feels to Arkansas is playing a big role. Arkansas wide receiver coach Justin Stepp has been putting in a ton of work here and it isn’t going unnoticed. I’m not ready to change my Crystal Ball quite yet, but this one has a chance to really get away from Texas.

—McKinney North WR JJ Henry may be bumping up his timeline. I talked to him over the weekend, and it sounds like he’s realizing he won’t likely be able to take any visits this fall. I’ve been told that Texas is likely at the top of his list along with Texas A&M. Look for Henry to cut his schools down to a top five sometime soon before moving towards a decision in the next few weeks.

—I’m not sure what Texas can do at offensive line to salvage this class. Herb Hand’s had a tough cycle despite holding a commitment from Hayden Conner for over a year. As Savion Byrd continues to trend further from the Longhorns and Bryce Foster looks like more of a longshot, Texas is working on Highland Park OL Jack Leyrer. After throwing up a developmental Hail Mary with Jesuit’s Ryan Lengyel and losing him to Baylor, Texas pivoted once again to Leyrer. The Longhorns will have to make up some ground quick as Leyrer is already pretty far along in his recruitment. Stanford, Vanderbilt and Northwestern are the other schools standing out with The Cardinal in the perceived position of strength. Leyrer wants to take a visit to Austin on Friday, and we will see if that changes anything for him.

—Speaking of self-guided tours, Shemar Turner took one this week. It sounds like the process is speeding up for him. In fact, he’s getting tired of everything going on right now. I was told before the weekend that he’s tightening his circle as much as possible, so information is becoming harder to come by. I’d expect Turner to take some more trips to some of his other favorites like this as his parents go along to get a good look at the possibilities. I still feel that Texas is at the top of the list here, but A&M and Alabama are making it a tough race to the very end.

—La Porte’s Albert Regis doesn’t talk a ton, but he recently included Texas in his top schools. Even my best college sources say that Regis is tough to get a good read on, but it sounds like Texas is putting in a ton of work for him. The race feels like it’s breaking down as Texas vs Texas A&M, and I’d give Texas the edge as it stands right now.

—We don’t talk a lot about Garland Lakeview Centennial DL Ikechukwu Iwunnah, but I checked with a source near him recently. It feels like Texas would be the likely destination when Iwunnah makes his decision, but it will depend on how the numbers play out. I’m going to try to make a trip to Lakeview sometime this week if they allow me out, so I’ll have a better idea if that happens.

—I think Texas the defensive staff is doing what they can to flip Mansfield Legacy DL David Abiara. In fact, the talk around the Notre Dame commit is not if he will flip but when. SMU is a school I’ve heard doing some great work in this recruitment, and Oklahoma appears to be back in the picture. Sources I spoke with don’t have a great feel for where Texas stands in this recruitment, and that’s probably not a great indicator for the Longhorns. Texas would have to pull off a stunner at this point.
Texas leads on the Crystal Ball for Terrence Cooks (Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports)

—Shadow Creek linebacker Terrence Cooks will likely make his decision in September, and I haven’t heard anything that would make me change my Crystal Ball at this point. I think this is Coleman Hutzler’s masterpiece in this class and it should play out for Texas unless something crazy happens.

—Speaking of linebackers, the Longhorns are still working on South Oak Cliff’s Jaydon Williams. Texas offered in the spring and appeared to be in a strong position before Williams committed to Arizona State. Despite Texas being a dream school of sorts, Arizona State has a pretty tight hold on Williams. It will be tough for the Longhorns to pry him away, but the staff will continue to work.

—Austin LBJ safety Andrew Mukuba should win the award for best concealment of his recruitment. While most sources I speak with feel Texas will be a finalist and probably the favorite, one source with knowledge of the situation believes Mukuba is definitely headed elsewhere. As Mukuba looks further into defensive back depth charts and talent coming in, Texas has a few things working against them with the way they’ve recruited at that position over the last several years. Having Billy Bowman and JD Coffey in this class doesn’t really help either. Mukuba seems to tell just about everyone something different, but my best read on the situation says this comes down to Texas and Clemson.

—I’ll end with a quick 2022 note. Guys are being really careful with what they say right now because they don’t want to be perceived as followers, but there is a lot of communication going on with 2022 prospects. I talked about the workout Quinn Ewers organized with Evan Stewart, Phaizon Wilson and Armani Winfield the other day, and there was supposed to be another prospect there. I can’t go into great detail yet because I’ve been asked not to, but Texas is making waves with a talented in-state prospect. There are some delicate parts of this recruitment, so we can’t get deep into it. We will see if Texas can keep the momentum up with this player.

Yep. The grad transfer scene is going to be a complete free for all. There will be hundreds of players able to transfer all with immediate eligibility. They are going to have to implement some kind of scholarship limit or structure to it.

(Eric Nahlin) Scoop: Another QB commits to UT, 2021 DL recruiting, 2022 WR recruiting

Quote

Recruiting is indeed picking up as the season nears:

- Texas five-star commit holds passing session with priority targets
- The staff adds its second quarterback in just over a week
- A future five-star defensive lineman took in Austin
- The staff continues the push for a dominant defensive line with a Houston area product
- UT is getting off the line quick in 2022 WR recruiting

By: Justin Wells

Charles Wright, 2021: Austin High quarterback Charles Wright flipped his commitment from Iowa State to Texas on Saturday evening. Literally. He was offered Saturday afternoon around 3:00 p.m., committed on the spot, and went public a couple hours later. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Wright said. “I’ve dreamed about this day ever since I was little and to be able to say that I’m going to be a Longhorn is amazing. I’m extremely thankful to be in this position. I’m just ready to get to work and compete.”

What’s he going to bring to the program? “Leadership and a competitive nature that’s going to make everyone better.“ At 6-foot-0.5, 192 pounds, the composite three-star is ready for his final ride with the Maroons. “We have a great group of seniors that have put the work in,” Wright said. “We’re going to be explosive and really exciting to watch. There’s a lot of pieces in my game that I want to showcase this year and I just can’t wait to get back out on the field.“ More on Wright from Eric and Gerry.

Armani Winfield, 2022: It was more than just a late night workout. Winfield has caught many footballs on the fields at Lewisville but last Friday night was different. After hooking up with Southlake Carroll signal-caller Quinn Ewers, the Lewisville receiver and a few other area prospects showed up and showed out on Friday night. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound 96 composite four-star holds 35 offers including Alabama, LSU, and Arizona State. Texas, OU and Texas A&M probably stand out the most.

“I'm pretty sure I set this up,” said Winfield, who doesn't lack for confidence or a big smile. "(Ewers and I) were on a FaceTime with a bunch of athletes that are really considering Texas. I asked Quinn if we could go throw. Quinn got the group chat jumping and we made it happen." Winfield’s growth and maturity has been impactful, according to his coaches. He was an unanimous District 6-6A first-team selection as a sophomore in 2019 and Co-Offensive Newcomer of the Year as a freshman in 2018. He's totaled 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns on 85 catches in his first two seasons at Lewisville.

He's been raised by his mother and I don't think he'll go too far away from her. But two out-of-state schools are pushing too. "Texas, most definitely," said Winfield about who stands out. "Ohio State and Arizona State too." "I like Texas because I grew up in Texas," Winfield said. "Why not put on for UT? I feel like me growing up in Texas, I can bring my skills, and with the new NIL rules, building that brand. I already have my fanbase right here."

Winfield doesn't have a set timeline for his recruitment, but I've heard he might want to lock down a spot in the 2022 cycle. The biggest takeaway from Winfield was how much he enjoys being close to home and making friends with other elite-level athletes.

Evan Stewart, 2022: You think watching his Hudl is fun? In person, he’s flying.

The 6-foot-0, 175-pound wide receiver from Frisco Liberty was in the house on Friday night. The 97 composite four-star is a two-sport athlete that also dominates in track and field. His verified times include: 10.7 100m, a blistering 21.08 200m, 24-6 in the long jump, and a 47-9 triple jump. He’s one of the most explosive athletes in the country. With 30 offers in hand including LSU, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, OU, and Notre Dame, he has the foundation for a fun recruitment.

“Quinn (Ewers) had put this together,” said Stewart about the secret passing session. "He hit me up on Instagram and told me, 'I'm going to add you to our group chat and we're going to throw with a few other guys.' So we got together and got some work." It's a good way to get to know each other. "I've known (Armani), we just have a good connection," Stewart said. "He's funny. Me and him both laugh all the time. Quinn... he's cool, and so is Phaizon (Wilson). I don't know them as well yet."

Stewart has goals for his upcoming junior season, and not just adding more followers to Tik Tok. "My expectations are trying to break records," Stewart said. "I'm talking about 50 (catches), 2,000 (yards), and a bunch of touchdowns. I'm coming hungry." When it comes to recruiting, Stewart is soaking it all up. "Texas, OU, Oregon, Penn State, and Baylor," Stewart said about who recruit him the most. "I like Texas. I like the burnt orange. I like the all-white jerseys. I just like their swag when they come out. Coach (Jay) Valai puts out a good vibe."

Stewart speaks with Valai the most, considering it's his recruiting area. He also talks to Andre Coleman, but has a great relationship with UT's new corners coach. There's no timeline for this 2022 stud, but Texas looks fantastic and Ewers is on to something special.

Charles Wright, 2021: It’s convenient when the right call is also the easiest. Needing a high floor, competitive signal caller in the class, UT didn’t have to look far to find the best option. After a short diligence period, they didn’t overthink it, either.

IT: What was your read on Charles Wright? I remember you liked him.

Big 12 OC/QB coach: Really like him. Competitive. Does more with less at Austin High. Able to extend plays and make plays out of the pocket. Smart. Fits mold of smaller, under-recruited chip-on-the-shoulder kind of guy.

IT: It’s like old times. Texas loses Milroe (like Perrilloux) and has Ewers following (like Jevan Snead). People overlook the Wrights (lIke Colt). Who knows how good he’ll be but he’s who I thought should replace Milroe.

Big 12 OC/QB coach: I think you could be spot on about it.

IT: Any thoughts on his arm, accuracy? His completion percentage isn’t great but he’s running for his life.

Big 12 OC/QB coach: Accuracy is good and above average arm strength.

Texas needed a Buechele type and might have landed someone every bit as good, if not better. Buechele struggled on field-side throws and didn’t show the improvisation skills Wright has. We won’t know what from Wright’s tool-kit transfers from high school to college but he’s going to be far from a clipboard holder thanks to a favorable composite of traits.

Shemar Turner, 2021: IT saw the DeSoto defensive lineman last week. Here’s what an out of breath Turner said before his UT weekend visit.

Inside Texas: What’s the latest on recruiting? Who do you talk to the most?

Shemar Turner: Right now who I’m talking to the most, I’m talking to Texas A&M, Texas, LSU, and Georgia a lot right now. Bama, we‘re talking every now and then. But recruiting has been going good for me. Nobody is leading right now. I really like (Jeff Banks, Alabama) and them up there; I really like Coach Price (A&M) and what they got going; I like Coach Johnson and what he has going at LSU; I like Texas, I like Coach Giles and Coach Hagen and what they have going on up there. Everything’s been pretty cool.

IT: With all these schools even, what’s going to be the deciding factor? What are you looking for?

ST: Hopefully I’ll be able to take official visits sooner or later. Right now, what I’m thinking is it’s probably not going to happen. But I hope it happens because it will make my decision a little bit easier.

IT: What are you looking for a far as football on the field, as far as fit?

ST: Right now I want to see how some of these seasons go. Texas switched their defense so I want to see how that’s going to go. I just want to see how everything goes with these teams on the field.

After the recorder was off, Turner said he realized he might be a defensive end for some schools or a defensive tackle for others. As of now he’s indifferent. His defensive line coach mentioned he’ll play at 305 in college. I agree with that, and there will still be very little poor weight. He’s a specimen.

Charles Wright, 2021: The commitment of Charles Wright from Austin High School shores up the quarterback room for the foreseeable future with Hudson Card already looking the part, Ja’Quinden Jackson still working out at the position, and Quinn Ewers committed in 2022. When wanting an up close evaluation of Wright, the best person to call is former NFL Pro Bowl QB Jeff Blake, who has been working with the 6-foot-0.5, 192-pounder for half a decade.

“One thing that I really like about Charles is his work ethic,” Said Blake, who trains a number of quarterback prospects in Central Texas, Houston, and nationally. “He has a great work ethic. He’s always working on the fundamentals, watching tape and strengthening his body. He’s probably gained 10 pounds of muscle in the last year. He trains all the time. He understands the game of football, plays with good vision and throws a good deep ball. A lot of guys aren’t used to having to put a team on their back. He’s capable of doing that because he’s had to. He may not win all of those games, but he’s performed well.”

Blake sees one specific area Wright can continue to improve on, but it’s the case with all young signal callers. “You can always continue to improve pre-snap and seeing the hots. That's part of a natural growth at the position. He’s been starting since midway through his freshman season, and has continued to improve every time we worked together. He has a thirst for the game.”

Albert Regis, 2021: La Porte defensive tackle Albert Regis dropped his top 6 of Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, and Arkansas on Saturday. While Houston is quietly said to have a puncher's chance, this is still the Longhorns vs. the Aggies with Texas holding a slight advantage. Texas defensive tackles coach Mark Hagen continues to build a strong relationship with Regis. In terms of where Regis and Texas stand, the 6-foot-2, 300-pound DT has been made aware that he is the priority defensive tackle commit for the Longhorns in the 2021 cycle. Texas will only take one true DT in the class, and they want it to be Regis. Regis doesn’t say or talk much, but he did relay to IT that Texas (Hagen) is the only program he spoke with over the weekend. After feeling like he committed to Minnesota too quick the first time around, Regis maintains that he is not in a hurry to make a decision the second time.

Ewers lending a Hand, 2022: If you are wondering who Quinn Ewers has reached out to since committing, it’s more than just offensive skill players (and more than 2022 recruits for that matter). Not only was he on a Zoom call last week with Atascocita OL Kam Dewberry, but he has also reached out to Kelvin Banks Jr. from Summer Creek. Banks, who IT hears has LSU, Texas and Texas A&M as the top group, said Sunday he responded to Ewers — without giving away too much. “I told him how much I like the school and the program, but that I’m not in a hurry to make a decision.” Banks said he plans to get to Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Baylor and possibly Auburn and Tennessee when visits open back up. Banks is a must-get OT in the class.

Shemar Turner, 2021: The five-star, by our count, from DeSoto is being recruited as a DE (look at what was written about Regis). Texas began Turner’s recruitment as his leader. After falling behind, they are ascending due to work of Giles and Hagen on Turner, and Giles and Tom Herman with Turner’s family. It’s Texas vs the SEC (Alabama, A&M, LSU), and the staff understands they are in for a real battle. The visit over the weekend went well. Turner was able to spend time with current Texas students and get a better feel for the school. In our estimation, he profiles well to the student side of things in Austin. This recruitment can’t be won in August, but Texas continues to solidify it standing. If you’re betting on a frenzied December recruitment, put your marker here.
