Texas -10.5 over Maryland

The Texas Longhorns were the hottest team in Las Vegas this week when the South Point sportsbook posted the first college football point spreads in town.

The Longhorns went from underdogs to favorites in their Week 2 clash with USC and attracted enough early action in their annual showdown with Oklahoma to cut the line in half.

Texas hosts the Trojans on Sept. 15. The Longhorns, who opened as 1-point underdogs, drew enough action in the first few hours to move the line to Texas -3.

The Longhorns, in their second season under coach Tom Herman, opened as a 12-point underdog to Oklahoma. That line quickly was bet down to Oklahoma -6. The Sooners and Longhorns meet Oct. 6.

"I'd call that a pretty big move," said Chris Andrews, veteran college football oddsmaker at the South Point. "I must have had Texas, Stanford and Oregon underrated. Every game involving those teams drew action."

I hadn't even realized this was being played at FedExField.

Maryland only averaged about 39K in terms of attendance last year so no way they come close filling out 82K capacity. Maybe the opening game creates some buzz for Maryland fans, but seems like there will be a lot of empty seats or Texas fans.

The University of Maryland keeps calling me to buy tickets because I called and inquired.  I told them I was a Longhorn and they still call...repeatedly.  It doesn't help that it's at FedEx, which isn't walkable from UMD.

They'll bring more than their average attendance and there's a strong Texas contingent in the Washington area. Should be really solid turnout. Hopefully it's a night game so the weather isn't hot and humid as balls

There's going to be plenty of Longhorns there.

If it was at College Park, I'd go to the game, but I'm not giving Dan Snyder my money.  Fuck that guy.

I'm with you, pal.

In related news, I don't know why anybody would be sweating tickets for this game. Attendance will be lucky to be 50K and FedEx holds over 80 thousand. You'll be able to Stubhub decent tickets for $20 before kickoff.

Yup.  Unless you need to be way down on the lower bowel, you shouldn't have any trouble finding tickets. None of the MD students are going to haul their asses out to Landover to watch the Terrapins.  Most can't even be bothered to walk across campus.

"I don't have to do it myself" - so at some point in the past, you *have* had to swallow yourself?

"Kiss my kids for me. Before you fuck my wife if possible, they're supposed to be in bed by eight."

You sound like Paul Rudd's character in "I Love You Man" trying to talk shit.  Jobin, is that you?

Sorry.... Never saw that one.   I do apologize.   I hate it when I am dragged down to the level of tex pete,  but I was originally responding to a poster that said "show me a loss".  Kidding or not I responded with my opinion that I  see multiple losses.   No-one wants to be wrong more than me,  but as of now,  thats the way I see it.   I am not a TH fan,  but I was a Texas before most of you guys were born.   First game I remember watching with interest was the Texas-Navy Cotton  Bowl.   Been a fan ever since.   Sorry I offended.   I just gave my honest opinion.   Neg away.   I can take it. ☺️

The season can't get here fast enough.  Baggins first season at aggy is going to be one huge steaming Pyle of sheep shit.  They will not be favored by 10.5 against anyone except the FCS juggernauts on the schedule.  I can't remember, are they playing Northwestern State or is it McNeese?   Maybe Nicholls again?  They  love Louisiana directional schools on their schedule.  I guess because that will be their primary recruiting competition after Baggins shits the SECSECSEC bed his first two seasons.  Saban, Dabo, Ogre, Coach Boom, the State of Mississippi, and Goiter Jr.  are going in dry.  UAB gonna tap dance on that ass.   Auburn too.

I mean, you're probably right, but this is a thread about Texas. I'm tired of the highlights of our season being the misery of A&M.

I'm not questioning your math and I know other conferences are guaranteed extra losses by playing an extra conference game per team, but can you show your work on this? I'd like to show this to an "SEC friend". Thanks

10 team conference playing 9 conference games and 3 OOC games

so you have 120 total wins and losses with 90 of those in the conference and 30 of them OOC

you are GUARANTEED that you have a 50/50 ratio of wins to losses in the conference games because one team has to win and one team has to lose so the only winning % the conference games can have is 50% and the total number of wins in conference games is 45 wins and 45 losses so 45-45

in the OOC you have the CHANCE to have a win WITHOUT the guarantee of a loss for your conference team so the best POSSIBLE record you can go in OOC games is 100% or 30-0 and of course the worst possible is 0-30 or 0%

so that means the best POSSIBLE winning % you can have with 9 conference games is .625 or a record of 75-45 because you have 45 conference wins and 45 conference losses and then 30 OOC wins (again this is the best POSSIBLE) record with the worst possible of course being 45-75 or .375

so now you have that same conference playing only 8 conference games and 4 OOC games so that is 80 conference wins and losses or 40-40 .500 and then then best POSSIBLE OOC record is 40-0 which means that your conference COULD go 80-40 or a winning % of .667

so when you play 1 additional conference game as a 10 team conference you have GUARANTEED that your conference will have 5 additional losses spread throughout the conference no matter what you do in the OOC because you have taken 10 games and moved them from the POSSIBILITY of going 10-0 to GUARANTEEING that you go 5-5

now of course there is no guarantee that you will win all 10 of those games if you switch them to OOC games Vs conference games, but the reality is all you have to do is win one additional game 6-4 instead of 5-5 and you have done better for the conference overall winning %......so when you play 10 additional shitty teams in the OOC you have a good chance to be 8-2 in those games instead of a GUARANTEED 5-5 if they were conference games

now here is the part a lot of people ignore that has been proven with a mathematics study on the PAC 12 playing 8 Vs 9 conference games

because so much of your strength of schedule is based on conference opponents even with only 8 conference games you really improve the strength of schedule for the conference when you improve that winning %......because suddenly a bad team in the conference that goes 5-7 with 4 shitty OOC games instead of going 4-8 still reflects as an overall better team in the strengthen of schedule for the other EIGHT conference teams they play with that one additional win because there is no such thing as a "good loss" in strength of schedule Vs a piss poor win.....a piss poor win is better every time over a "good loss to a tough team"......so when you are smart enough to know that no matter what a conference is going to have some teams that do shitty every year (and some that might do shitty for many years) it makes sense to try and give those teams the ability to just get some win on their schedule so that they can get some traction AND so that they look like slightly less bad dogshit on the schedules of the top teams in the conference and even the middle teams

and in addition even with a conference with 12, 14, or even 16 members the best POSSIBLE winning % stays the same based on the number of conference games....so the Big 10 playing 9 conference games (a stupid decision that Nebraska and others are already regretting) you have  14 teams X 12 games = 168 wins and losses combines

with 9 conference games you go 63-63 in conference then you have the POSSIBLE chance to go 42-0 in the OOC for a best POSSIBLE winning % of 105-63 or  .625

14 team conference playing only 8 conference games is 56-56 and a best POSSIBLE 56-0 in the OOC for a best POSSIBLE winning % of 112-56 or .667

so each additional conference game guarantees that you will have .042 less of a winning % for the conference as a whole which does not seem like a lot (or even some % of that if you do not win all the additional conference games, but still do better than 5-5 in them), but when you consider that each additional win over 5-5 means that 8 other teams in the conference are playing a team with one additional win it adds up fast for overall conference strength of schedule

and that does not get into getting additional teams into bowl games and the extra exposure and extra practices that your weakest teams really need
