Does it? Most of it looks like super generic action movie pablum. You could have told me this was a Mission Impossible trailer and I wouldn't have been surprised.

Also does every Bond movie need a facially disfigured villain? Malek's character just looks like a Dr. No retread.

Do you enjoy the Bond films?  If not, why are you here?

So damn disappointing.  Probably the movie I've been most looking forward to for over a year.

Me too. I hope there aren't any problems with it that keep making them move it but just telling us they want the most people to see it.

Maybe - if they ran it like Disney did with Mulan, in addition to being in theaters, they could make tons of money. Possibly rent it for $29.95 for a 2 day limited rental. I'd pay that.

is giving it to a subscription based service more profitable than releasing it via various digital outlets for $30-$50 a go? I assume much smarter and in-tune people than me are working this out.

It’s only $4.99/month so if you subscribed for one month to watch an exclusive streaming movie, it’s the same price or cheaper than most streaming rentals.
It's more a hassle than anything else. I think also they'd make you pay $30 on top of the apple tv subscription like disney did for mulan.

I get that but if you currently use a physical Apple TV then it’s incredibly simple to activate Apple TV+ and then subsequently cancel it when you are finished. I say this because I had similar thoughts to yours and then I did that so I could watch the Tom Hanks submarine movie and it was pretty painless.

All of that being said, I would strongly prefer to see No Time to Die in theaters, even if it means waiting longer.

I don't think they'll make this Bond movie another pay $30 sort of deal. This is all about getting signups. If it were about just pure cash, they'd throw it on iTunes like the other movies were done in March and April (Trolls 2). This is more to get people subbed into their service like the Tom Hanks WW2 was supposed to do.

If you have bought an Apple device any time recently, you may have access to Apple TV+ and not even know it. Think you get like a year "free" with purchase of a device.

yeah. my MBP display was out of sorts and needed to get replaced which was done via AppleCare. After that was done, I get an email saying I had AppleTV+ because I purchased a new device...

Wouldn't surprise me.  MGM is not going to care what streaming service gets it (well they may not want WB/HBO or Disney), and they don't care if they get their payday is spread out over a month from butts in seats, plus rental sales, etc., or if Apple swoops in with one big check.

Apple has deeper pockets and is more desperate.

This. Buying the rights to the Peanuts holiday specials and putting them behind a paywall in order to drive subscriptions seems pretty desperate.

That said...Being a Bond film fan who thinks three of the four the Craig films have been good to very good, I'd have first-day paid $20 to "rent" this had it dropped on Prime Video like we did for my kid when Trolls was released. I'll shell out $5 for a month, watch Bond a few times, the Hanks WW2 flick, and whatever ATV+ has, then cancel.

That pissed a lot of people off, even people who haven't watching the Peanuts specials in years.

Yeah, I doubt that very much. Also it’s not uncommon tactic for streaming services to buy up shows to build up a catalog. What’s so different here?

If Sesame Street can move to HBO, I think we can live with Peanuts being on a streaming platform.

MGM is now the equivalent of a “Group of 5” mid-major.  It’s also owned by its former creditors after its bankruptcy a few years ago.  They have been angling for a sale, and had hoped to use the Bond film rights as the crown jewel to get someone to buy.  With the money form that now in doubt, makes sense they’d just put it out to the highest bidder, or maybe try to get Apple or Netflix to buy teh studio.

Sesame Street still airs on PBS.  HBO gets first dibs, but kids aren’t going to notice a time delay since there’s multiple Sesame Street airings a day on their PBS stations

The Peanuts thing made the national news, because nobody  wants to watch a Peanuts Halloween special in the spring

Good point on Sesame Street, and lol on Peanuts making national news.

It’s not a bad move. They won’t recover 25% of the production costs in the theaters right now. Offer them 50% and they may take it.

For as much as Tenet is considered a box office flop, it had a budget of $200 million and a worldwide box office of $341 million.

No Time to Die had a budget of $250 million. I can’t imagine MGM would sell for any less than $350 million. Even with the terrible theater situation in the pandemic, a Bond film is almost sure to outperform a cerebral time travel film.

Don't some theaters have agreements that the studio gets say 90% of ticket sales the first week, 80% the next, etc., etc.

Because if so, then it would be a flop for the studio if the majority of people went weeks after it came out.

Apple could pay them $350 for rights and then a percentage of rentals (I’m thinking $24.95), which would be huge, and then when theaters open up put it in the theaters and let them keep all the money. It would be huge for Apple in getting rentals and subscriptions. Disney allowed Mulan to be a lifetime viewing as long as you keep subscribing to Disney, but that ended once you stopped. I heard Mulan was not a good movie so I’m not sure how that turned out. Bond will get a huge following because - it’s Bond. Whatever, I just want to see the damn movie!!!

Damn.  No wonder Apple was possibly the final contender.  A cool $600 million.

Other studios, such as Paramount and Sony, have raked in tens of millions by selling movies like “Greyhound,” “Coming 2 America” and “Without Remorse” to streaming services while the exhibition sector continues to struggle during the pandemic.

Quote

However, multiple insiders at rival studios and companies said that a possible Bond sale was explored overtly, and believe that MGM was at least open to the possibility of unloading their crown jewel for a princely sum. The studio was said to be looking for a deal of roughly $600 million — a price tag that was deemed too rich for two of the free-spending streaming services.

Quote

Moving “No Time to Die” to a streaming service poses some logistical challenges. The film costs more than $250 million to produce and has lined up several promotional partnerships to help defray those costs — including Land Rover, Omega watches and Heineken. Those companies may have been expecting the film to hit theaters and might not be thrilled with a streaming-only bow. “Coming 2 America’s” sale to Amazon, for instance, was contingent on making sure that its promotional partners, McDonald’s and Crown Royal, were on board with the change in plans.

This will make six full years between films.  Has there ever been that much of a gap between Bond films?  At this rate when it's finally released, Daniel Craig is going to show up to the premiere in a diaper with a walker.

I'm losing interest.

The movie will now release in theaters on Oct. 8. It was originally scheduled to open on April 2.

It’s hardly a surprise that the Bond film has been pushed back to fall. Hollywood has been widely anticipating that “No Time to Die” would face another delay as coronavirus cases continue to skyrocket.

these movies are an absolute beating to film.  casino and quantum came out in 06 and 08, but only skyfall and spectre came out in the 12 years after that.  craig will end up doing 5 movies in 15 years, so there have been plenty of breaks.

there was a 6 year gap between license to kill and goldeneye (obviously they switched bonds).

if they were smart, they would cast the new bond and start pre-prod now, so they can have minimal time between the next films.  aim for summer 2023.

Somehow missed the trailer when it came out awhile back.

Just saw the new TV spot. It looks great.

ADA is hot as balls. Malek is great in most everything. I like that they brought back the American agent from Casino (has he been in any of the others? I feel like it was just that one).

In. But then I love Bond films.

IIRC Felix Leiter, the brother from Langley, was in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace but not Skyfall or Spectre.

Also... (re)watching Casino right now.

This is the best Bond film ever made. 2nd is a more interesting conversation. Craig nails it. It's smart but has its action moments. He taps hot ass but a lot of it is pretty dark.

Just fantastic.

And quantum should have been delayed until after they got a script

The hour long game of Texas Hold 'Em in the middle just kills the pacing for me.
