Wouldn't having everyone verified be a good thing? No more pet avatars & bots spamming/trolling every fucking Twitter thread.

Sure, but it'll also likely mean there will be less dis/misinformation being spread around. A lot of people are about to learn they've been getting their info from bots

All of these are good things to keep in mind and, combined with the problems he'd run into trying to loosen moderation, are why in one sense I'm not overly worried about this. Though I don't love giving Elon fucking Musk access to everyone's DMs and whatever info twitter requires to authenticate users. He's pretty near the top of the list of people I would expect to abuse that power.

However, despite Twitter's relatively small user base, it has disproportionate cultural influence because it's where all of the "elites" talk to each other. It's replaced the New York Times as the driver of what is the major news of the day for a lot of the media, it's where politicians frequently signal to each other, etc. It plays a really major role in modern American politics. Considering that, it's not great that House Republicans just threatened the Twitter board with political retribution if they didn't sell to Elon. There's no reason to think he won't put the thumb on the scales to help out the GOP, much the way Facebook has.

Came here to post mostly this.  Twitter is absolutely where elites— politicians, academics, journalists, and so on— go to talk to each other, fight, and shout. The Economist also has a pretty damn small readership, but it’s maybe the most influential publication in the world.

Anyway, Twitter under Musk will absolutely censor/block/restrict some content it’s just a question of where Musk himself wants to draw the line. He’s an interesting personality but I am more fascinated with who tends to become a Musk Stan than I am the man himself.

I don't think it will, I think ignore functions and stuff will just improve so you don't get randomly blasted by crazy shit you don't want to see.

A lot of what is wrong with social media is it is geared to keep people in the app as much as possible looking at as many posts as possible with as little effort as possible.

Not for women or other marginalized people that could be subjected to harassment or real life shit.

I don’t post as “myself” here because I don’t like pervy messages.

I don’t post as “myself” on Twitter because I don’t want my real life friends and colleagues to know about my obsession with Harry Styles and Jonathan Bailey (embarrassing) or my vocal politics (could be damaging to my career and could ostracize me socially).

I post as myself of Facebook because I only accept IRL people on there and I HEAVILY censor myself - I’ll share work stuff, pictures and updates on my kids, and random social stuff. NEVER about politics. NEVER. Hell. I rarely even post about Alabama football anymore because I have a lot of AU, FSU, UGA, UF, UTenn, and LSU family and friends who still get way too butthurt about it.

There’s plenty of good reasons to keep a degree of anonymity on these sites.

I’m sure if I attracted a dedicated enough adversary, they could figure out who I am on here and on Twitter but it’s good enough to silo my online activities as a regular person and very online person.

Plus, how will they verify? Want a copy of my driver’s license? My SS number?

Fuck ALL THAT. I don’t want Dorsey or Zuckerberg or especially Musk having that.

Fair points, but doesn't the cloak of anonymity cause people to behave in ways they would never do under a verified account? I would think it would curb harassment. And Zuckerberg already has that and more if you are an active Facebook user, particularly on the app.

Call me crazy but I think they'll find a way to believe their favorite right wing accounts (bots) were unfairly silenced by the globalists....

As a daily user it will be interesting to see how the content changes if bots are brought under control.

Imagine thinking only “one side” deployed Twitter bots.

Ivermectin is trending this morning and it’s a bunch of people saying how great it is so I guess this worked and the crazies feel like they won somehow with Elon buying twitter.

This is who we are. Everyone wants to fight it and try to pretend like it's different, but this is who America is. The good news is our stupid people are slightly less stupid than the next country's stupid people.

Boff sides!

One side will be surprised to learn their favorite accounts were bots.

The other side will refuse to believe they were bots and cook up a fresh Q globalist conspiracy.

Basically.

Another interesting point is I think there will no longer be “ads” for legacy media like WaPo. Used to see them pretty frequently. Pretty sure they were just free, targeted establishment propaganda.

Less inane “fact checks” featured.

just like all the people that need to open carry an AR15 into 7-11 to get their dick hard said that Obama and Biden getting elected was the end of the 2A; nothing happened.  Believe it or not America is still standing and they can still choose to combat ED by cosplaying with guns as they like.  I suspect twitter will be the same.  maybe Trump gets his account back.  maybe dumbfucks get to spread more disinfo.  political twitter is fucking awful anyway as it is.

i guess i am saying

We can lament either side on rich fucks having too much power and either side may have their panties in a wad over something on a given day, but we apparently love this shit in America and fight tooth and nail to not only keep the wealth disparity but grow it...for reasons.

if twitter is used to start a fascist uprising that eliminates democracy then someone can take a screenshot of this stupid post and put it on twitter to shame me.

I think the greatest danger is Musk using his access to Twitter's info on users to do petty shit like swat people who criticize him on there, rat them out to their bosses for saying shit he doesn't like, etc. He's going to try not to for a few days or weeks, but he's not going to be able to help himself and he's eventually going to abuse his power as owner of Twitter for dumb personal shit.

Not that the trolls will believe it, but the Twitter algorithm already favored conservatives:

An interesting (take it with a grain of salt) blind poll. I don't know if you guys are familiar with Blind (I use it for my company to get the scoop on layoffs and rumors, etc.) from NYT:

Many Twitter employees feel personally invested in the company’s effort to encourage healthy conversation — even if they do not directly work on content moderation — and have pressed executives to crack down further on hate speech and misinformation, six employees said. They see Mr. Musk’s proposal to revert to Twitter’s early, lax approach as a rebuke of their work.

But other employees have argued in internal messages seen by The Times that their co-workers have shifted too far to the left side of the political spectrum, making employees who support Mr. Musk’s plans too uncomfortable to speak up. In a worker-run survey of nearly 200 Twitter employees on Blind, an anonymous workplace review app, 44 percent said they were neutral on Mr. Musk. Twenty-seven percent said they loved Mr. Musk, while 27 percent said they hated him.

You are right.  The problem isn’t that Elon’s Twitter is going to allow free speech.  It’s that the American public is largely dumb as fuck, short on time and long on misinformed opinions.  Twitter just allows someone to project information. You still have to have an audience that information resonates with enough to subscribe/follow/like.

What smart people need to realize is that that their facts, data and supporting evidence don’t matter.  Everything they have learned pre-social media about debating ideas is wrong.  The most well researched and crafted dissertation has no chance against a two sentence tweet authored in simple terms to appeal to simple people.  And for every such dissertation that is not read by anyone but a select few academics, there are millions of social media posts that have already shaped public opinion one way or the other.

Smart people’s intelligence works against them in this arena.  It is the age of the information zerg.  Proofing, fact checking, being reasonably certain you are correct before projecting — these instincts are wrong.  It’s why someone like Trump, an idiot whose stupidity is only exceeded by a narcissistic belief in himself, can be incredibly effective shaping public opinion and controlling the conversation.  He isn’t burdened with the need to validate anything in his own mind.  It just pops into his head and he projects it out there with more confidence than those with much more rigorously self-vetted opinions.

Tl;dr:  tl;dr

TL:DR - firehose of falsehood trumps critical thinking. Pun intended.

Twitter is going to censor. Obviously, there’s not going to be child porn on Twitter, or other blatantly illegal content.

But Twitter is not going to have ISIS beheadings or recruitment, either.  It won’t be a home to shit like Reddit was, that was creepy but legal like that forum where people shared creeper pics of underage girls.

I doubt they’ll allow blatant doxxing. I doubt they’re going to allow even certain forms of racist and hate speech.

Don’t get twisted, you cannot be a free speech absolutist. There will absolutely be shit that’s taken down or blocked.

You think it is just Trump and the right?

Our media -- social and regular -- does a terrible job of informing the public on basic facts.

I saw another poll where the majority of white liberal women thought that 9 percent of the American population has died from Covid.

Then you have this--

Trump claiming he won't rejoin Twitter if they unban him.

Quote

“I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” Trump told Fox News in a statement that was issued shortly before Musk’s $44 billion buyout offer for Twitter was accepted unanimously by the company’s board.

“I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH,” Trump’s statement read.

hmmmm

Is there any interpretation other than Twitter itself was overstating certain political figures following and understating others? Why would they do that?

Knowing almost nothing about these kinds of algorithms my blind guess is that number of followers was one of the inputs involved in determining how much reach your account had.

Gotta clean up shop before Elon takes over.

Well guess I’m going to get my Twitter info on this thread for awhile as the DT one has gone to shit…same handful of posters in a frenzy throwing out woke memes, pummeling Eddie on his argument against shadow banning and jerking each other off.
