Jack Ryan Season 1

Spoiler

interesting take but disagree

  • The attack on Suleiman's village as a child was not a drone attack, it was a manned aircraft attack.    The drone pilot specifically said that drone and manned aircraft are two drastically difference attack methods from a moral standpoint.    Wasn't he resentful that he was pulled away from a career as a pilot?
  • While I'm sure the death of his family minus little brother, would be traumatic, Suleiman seemed to want to be westernized.   He was educated, interned at a bank, and wanted to continue working in digital banking.  He rebelled when he was marginalized for not being western.   He didn't reject Western society because the West killed his parents.
  • Ryan did not stop the military from attacking the compound from the air.  It was the discovery that the prisoners were there. Yes Ryan wanted an attack with ground forces but that was never going to happen just to save the boy.   Ryan had nothing to do with that decision.  He definitely convinced the President to order saving the boy.

My mistake on the nature of the origin attack.   That certainly weakens the connection.   On Ryan, my point was that he, as the moral example on the show, was fighting for ground troops, and preparing them for the mission, even if just to save the boy.  That another factor ultimately persuaded the president to do it doesn't really take away from that message.  And I thought him speaking up about it early on in the discussions delayed a decision to just bomb the place, but I could be mistaken.

I am 5 episodes in and its definitely a lot of this.

Its still an interesting watch, but if this was called  "Random CIA analyst tracks down a bad muslim"  it would hold the same concept.

I mean they do have James Greer, and they have Cathy Mueller written in,  but for some odd fucking reason, even though Clancy gave a pretty good backstory to all 3 of those characters, this show has completely re-written their backstory.

I know it sounds petty, but why the fuck do you take the time to buy the rights to Jack Ryan, and suddenly have him graduate from Boston College instead of Annapolis?

And Cathy Mueller- Ryan.... it was established in all the books that she was a badass ophthalmologist.    So now shes suddenly a badass epidemiologist?

and James Greer might actually not have even served in the Navy, he's just a lower-level CIA middle manager

I get that its a reboot, and they are trying to catch Jack when he was "younger" but it just seems  pretty stupid to change normal backstories without a specific reason.  So far, I see no reason why we changed Cathy's specialty, or Jack's alma mater.

Spit balling here-- Bio terror attack coming next season?

By the end of the last episode, I had forgotten about the drone pilot.  I wonder if his story included being captured by Suliman and getting caught up in the main story but they decided to cut it during the edits.   Perhaps they couldn't completely eliminate it or they would be too short of material.   You're 100% on that it made no sense.

And the drone pilot's weird story about hooking up after the casino visit, and husband in that story was Lee Tergesen (Oz, Generation Kill.)   I wouldn't believe they would hire him for a 5 minute side story.

Possibly the drone pilot will somehow come into play in Season 2 and they wanted to introduce him in S1, but that doesn't make too much sense.

The couple from the drone pilot scene - their names were characters from A Streetcar Named Desire - which Alec Baldwin went on to star in on Broadway after Hunt for Red October.  I think it was a nod to Baldwin getting fucked over by Paramount (they basically shoved him out to get Harrison Ford in).

The couple only appeared in that one scene and Alec only did one movie...

The actress who played Blanche was 50 when they shot it.  Nice body of work.

Alec Baldwin was who I pictured as Jack Ryan when I read the first few Clancy books.

I was pissed when they cast Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. But not as pissed when they cast William Dafoe as Clark. Thought Clark was supposed to be a bit bigger and helluva lot more intimidating.

He was supposed to be moderately burly, if not overly lean and fit. I even seem to recall the books even describing him as kinda hairy.

The Clark-like actor in this new series is nearly as bad as Dafoe: small, scrawny, and he whines like Slorch.

I honestly assumed the drone pilot backstory was a just a plot device to explain why he decided to go rouge and shoot the bad guy, thus letting the wife escape.

Seems like Clancy always had some sort of side story going on in the books.

I don’t recall many (if any) superfluous storylines. They all seem to intersect in one way or another.

It's been a while since I read Executive Orders, there was a storyline about some rednecks on the way to bomb the White House or something. They got stopped by the cops. The end. That storyline was shit anyway, but would have been better if they just edited it out.

I think the drone story is either there for the second season, or something happened late in the shooting/editing, and something was removed.

But then again, they drop these all at once, so it's not like they are shooting and releasing and get halfway through the season and have a problem shooting in the last episode or two and have to drop a subplot.

The guys running the show were involved with Lost.  Been a while since I saw it, but I think Lost had a storyline or two that was never resolved....

5 episodes in, enjoying it so far , but this could have been any generic CIA character. Greer is all wrong and don't care for the actress playing Cathy.
On a positive note, side boob in Ep. 2 was very impressive.

Yeah that was my overall feel. Entertaining show but nothing particularly special. Just finished all eps.
Also John Krasinski’s nose is huge. Reminds me of Wallace from W&G.

Yeah, I kept thinking of the character as Bunk throughout the series. They shouldn't have bothered using the Greer character for this role and just saved it for someone else.

Jim Halpert is fucking terrible in this and horribly miscast. He has one look, which is part sad, part scared. Abbie Cornish is fucking ugly. Her face and head are almost perfectly round. They are either hiding 250 lbs with CGI or she's 8 months pregnant. And again, she's fucking ugly. And Jim sucks at this.

So it wasn't just me. I couldn't get passed her round head until they showed her titties and then I was wondering if it was a body double.

Regarding Jim, as others mentioned he did a terrible job of portraying his struggle to be honorable while doing what is needed to complete the mission. As I recall, Ryan was constantly questioning the way this world works but not in a pissy manner which is how Jim approached it.

I thought the same thing, Clark was supposed to be more stout than Dafoe or this current actor.

I was surprised one of the Coast Guard pilots didn't introduce themselves as Manuel "Portagee" Oreza with the way they were just tossing out Clancy characters.

I liked it. Looking forward to season 2. The drone episode was better to me than some people stated. However, him coming to visit the father seemed out of the blue. It’s scary that this all could happen. Those are some bad dudes. Evil.

What do you mean “this all could happen?”

speaking of which, will Without Remorse ever see the light of day as a movie?

Ask and you shall receive. One Michael B. Jordan movie coming up.

Actually, two with Rainbow Six. About time they make that one...pretty much a can't-miss popcorn movie as far as the Clancy-verse goes.

going to be some pissed off people, for a variety of reasons.

I don't see it; and not because of race. John Clark always struck me as the quiet rage type. Even Dafoe's characterization seemed off to me. Maybe Michael B. Jordan will surprise...

and how are they planning on doing both Rainbow Six and Without Remorse given how many years apart those are. Clancy's novels have always been future proof in a way but a young John Clark leading Rainbow Six would be too different. So its either that or 2 different actors

Without remorse on paper should be awesome. Without remorse in this era of Hollywood is destined to suck unfortunately.  Clark tortured dudes in that book. They won't go there will they?

I stayed away from this thread and spoilers for jack and honestly the series hooked me. I understand they probably take creative liberties on characters to enhance the story and aren't true to the novels but that's what happens with tv/movies a lot. With all that said,  not good acting for halpert for sure but I enjoyed the show. Wish they would have followed up with drone guy (was that Brad from pulp fiction?) and intersected with the main story line one more time.

Yeah all of this. Greer will always be 'Admiral Greer' to me.

I can't believe I shaved my balls for this. Really disappointed. Started out OK but then went to shit.

I am on episode 7 and I am not going to bother finishing. Jack Krasinski's acting is horrible. The female Doctor is horrible. The scene where Jack Ryan and the Turkish guy get into it was horrible.

Just bad.

I am way late to the party (obviously) but just finished it last night. I thought Halpert was fine not great but fine. The first half of the season was solid and then it went off the rails. Especially the last episode. It felt like they thought they were going to make 10 or 12 episodes and then at the very last minute they decided to go with 8 and rushed the living fuck out of the end.

Not great but I will give Season 2 a shot. And I thought Abbie Cornish was fine, especially as a doctor.

Just finished binging the series and not at all surprised to see so many of you miserable fuckers can't manage to enjoy a good yarn.

I've read ALL the Clancy novels, including the ghost-written ones post death.  I was irritated at first that they changed the characters so much, but I got over it after a few episodes and enjoyed it for what it is.

A few thoughts:

- If he is John Clark, yeah it's all wrong compared to the novels, but they are clearly going different directions

- The complaints about the casting of JK as Ryan are silly.  Ryan was NEVER supposed to be a badass.  The whole basis of his character is that he is a smart, principled everyman thrust into extraordinary situations.  I think that part comes across well.

- I would wife Abbie Cornish.  I like the casting a lot.  Cathy is smart and driven and that shows in her portrayal. Plus, nice tits and nipples.

- The drone piolt subplot felt too much like pure societal commentary with only tangential plot relevance.

I'm looking forward to Season 2.  It's well acted and has great production values.  Yeah, the writing could be tighter, but they can improve that.
