Michael Dickson

Sure. That's a bit of a reach for me, but with Dickson's elite placement and consistency, I can buy it. But acting like letting him drop to the 5th is some massive blunder by GMs on par with drafting projects at QB in the first round is silly.

Poona Ford going undrafted bothers me much more.

Seattle is going to get a shit-ton of value out of both of them.

I'm in the PNW and most Seahawk fans seem quite happy about The Punter.

I wonder what effect punting in frequent drizzle is going to have on his production.

I feel like Seattle is the worst weather that he could go to. There are colder outdoor stadiums, but Seattle is the wettest one.

Serious question - does rain really affect the ability to punt?  Maybe makes receiving the snap a bit tricky, but otherwise how is it an issue?

Ball might be a little heavier. Might affect his accuracy too.

I was thinking that it would make for a heavier ball & affect the spin/placement. He might have fewer land inside the 10 and go out of bounds than on other fields.

I don't know this for a fact, but it seems to make sense when I think about how the foot actually spins the ball off the outside of the foot in kind of a "controlled slice" motion.

Makes sense to me!  Thanks.

You slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night, didn't you?

Seattle was 30th in net punting avg, T-6th in most punts returned, T-8th in most punt return yards allowed avg, below average in touchbacks, and middle of the pack in punts downed inside the 20. If their other special teams players aren't shit he should be able to win the job just fine.

When's the last time a kicking specialist was drafted round 5 or higher and didn't make the team?

Jon Ryan is a fan favorite in Seattle, but he's been in decline for a year or two. Dickson will almost certainly be his Week 1 replacement barring injury or an inexplicable drop in skill level.

You don't trade up for a guy who won't win the competition going away.

The guy is the best punter I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of them.  The dude puts the ball where he wants 99% of the time.  To me that's his main strength.  Gives his teammates a chance to make a play.  Hook 'em Dicko!

It was hilarious reading Seahawks fans complain that there's not much difference between a good and bad punter and pointing at average length as their metric. Half of Dicko's best highlights are 30 yard, corner of the field hangers that his gunner downs at the 2. That's a lot of what makes him so special.

Yep.  Tear 'em up, Dicko.

Which means Petey must get his special teamers up to speed if they hope to weaponize Dicko to his full potential.

I noticed that Dickson (and the other Aussie punter we got) follow through with their knee bent and toe down.  The classic punter follow through is a straight leg with a high toe.  Dickson is small guy and doesn't seem to have especially powerful legs.  I wonder if the Australian rules way of kicking that that school teachers is just better.  If you follow through with knee bent more rotational inertia of your leg is transferred to the ball instead of staying in your leg?

That's how they're taught down under. If you ever have a chance to watch an ARFL game, watch how they kick the ball. All just like Dicko.

It's a tiny little country, with fewer people than the state of Texas, but they sure do produce a hell of a lot of good punters.

I think everyone agrees that dicko is a badass who will do great in the nfl, but do we really think that “NFL coaching” is gonna make much of a difference for the guy?

maybe coaching for his special teams bros I guess.

The coaching comment was kind of silly, but now that he doesn’t have to worry about class or anything else, he can devote all his time to his craft, which usually results in improvement, especially for someone who’s only been punting an American football for three years

I'd like to know who the other two assholes ahead of him are. The punter had like 2 bad punts max last season. One of which came in the bowl game he won the fucking MVP for. Just can't imagine one better than DickO.

Saints P Thomas Morstead and Titans P Brett Kern.

New Zealand only has around 4 million people, fewer than many cities, and they’ve dominated world rugby for about 100 years.  that is crazy.
