2006 Rose Bowl National Championship Stories

So many great stories on TOS.  Don't hesitate to repeat them here.

We didn't go.  We had a five month old and couldn't get away.  Suffice it to say, we woke him yelling at the TV.

From the impromptu victory celebration.

I don't have a particularly interesting story, but the thing I remember most about the game - and the whole thing was a bit of a blur, but I swear this happened - was on the 4th-down stop...it felt like an eternity for the refs to get the chain out there and measure. So I'm watching the screen at the Rose Bowl, and when they were extending the chain, they sort of paused just for a second before they straightened the entire thing out, such that it looked like they had made it...I was actually in the middle of yelling "GODDAMNIT!" and then they extended the thing all the way and jubilation ensued.

I remember that more than anything else. That and not wanting to leave.

My mom (Texas Ex) ordered her first HD TV for the sole purpose of watching this game.  Best Buy was supposed to deliver it the day of but it got delayed and wasn't going to come in until the next day.  So we moved the couch about 10' forward and parked it 4' in front of her 32" tube TV.

Was at a and IN and Out Burger Joint trying to damp down our drucken post game fugue and some swag bitch started bitching about all the Texas fans and I walked up to her table and looked at her BF and told him that he need to tell is “Butt Puppet Girlfriend to shut the fuck up!”  He just looked at me catfishing mouth opening and closing then the whole place burst out into the Eyes of Texas

True story but I was pretty drunk at the time and well Vince Fucking Young and all.

My story also.  USC fans thought they had it and were cheering, UT fans were quiet.  A second later, that reversed, UT fans were going crazy and USC fans went quiet knowing there was no way they were going to stop VY from getting his team in the end zone.  My ears were ringing for days later after that game.

My friend was a season ticket holder and had purchased 4 tickets to the Rose Bowl via his season ticket package.  He told me that I could have one of the tickets.  After seeing how much the tickets were going for on the secondary market, his fucking brother with whom he shared the season tickets unilaterally decided to sell two of the four tickets which obviously included my ticket.  I've never met the brother, but if I do - he will die a slow painful death..

Blah blah blah... Vince... Young ... Scores!

That, and when we stopped USC on 4th down (the play, not the measurement of the gift spot they got when the original spot was overruled), I immediately screamed, “We won!”  The USC fans next to us looked like they knew it, too.

My wife was pregnant with our first child, and in that first trimester period when she went to bed every night at 8pm. But she stayed up through the very end cheering her ass off, then went to bed and I stayed up until 4am drinking Scotch, watching ESPN and reading the entire internet.

I was in the UT end zone/ game day desk side. VY scores in opposite end zone for the final go-ahead. The UT end zone ERRUPTS. Guy next to me in his 50’s who’s married and most likely has children, turns to his wife and says “This is the best day of my life!”. She screams and is extatic.

I’ll never forget that. Now that I’ve been married and witnessed my children’s birth I can’t say that.... at least to my wife.

My best friend and I watched it at the Houston Exes party at some sports bar at a mall, can’t remember where. Anyway, we get there kind of late because he had a medical school interview. I went with him to Houston because he was my football buddy and I couldn’t imagine watching it without him. So we get to the bar and it’s packed as fuck, of course. We really aren’t sure where we can sit. All of a sudden we notice a table for two just sitting there open with a perfect view of the TVs.

So we just go grab it. It was awesome. The atmosphere there was amazing. There were some USC fans there that were heckling everyone when it looked grim for us. But we knew. We knew that Vince just needed the ball one more time. And then, The Stop happened.

When Vince scored the winning touchdown, that bar went fucking ape shit. I still get chills thinking about it. People were jumping on top of table, jumping and hugging each other. It was so amazing. So glad my BFF got to experience that together.

Was there. It was great.

One thing about the game is that it just predates the ubiquity of video cameras and also YouTube, so there aren’t as many reaction videos as subsequent big games.

I remember really enjoying one video of a casino going fuckin’ bonkers for VY’s touchdown, but haven’t seen it in years. If anyone knows the video and could post it, I would gladly mail you some Totino’s pizza rolls.

I was there. One of the greatest days of my life. I memorialized it by writing a short story about the whole day. A lot of cool things happened that day, one thing in particular.

In the fourth quarter, there was the usc touchdown play where two Longhorns were down injured in the end zone. I think Brown had just broken his arm. A lot of the Longhorn fans worried that this might be the final blow to knock us out of the game. As I searched for inspiration, I looked upward to the sky. The blimp was overhead. The digital display on the blimp showed a happy face. At that exact moment the happy face winked. I suddenly became ultra-confident that we’d somehow win the game. I told my buddy and it fired him up too.

The only lapse in confidence was what the poster above mentioned. Before the refs stretched the chain, it looked like we were short and everyone around us groaned. Awesome day.

@Caesars Palace Sports Book. USC fan talking shit entire game to our group but mostly to Me and Friend (Georgia fan). After they go 38-26 he crumbles his sports ticket and throws it at our feet.  He says "That was my crying money in case USC lost". Proceeds to go buy beers and offers us one which we both told em to fuck off. Friend picks up ticket and it's a bet for UT ML for $500.  Game ends and he slumps in his chair as we taunt him.  Friend cashes ticket and buys us all beers including him. Woman whom  I assume his G/F begs friend for sympathy and to give money back.  We laugh and celebrate more..

Fast forward about 2 years and my wife is watching some plastic surgery show.. She calls me in the room. The girl is on tv with same guy getting a boob job done. Sorry no pics. Turns out she was an adult film "star".

Was at the game with my then wife.  As soon as the chains stretched out I turned to her and said it's over, we won.  Every person in the stadium knew it.

One thing I remember is on the second to last play they threw a swing pass to Bush and from my angle it looked like he was in the open field and just one missed tackle from taking it all the way.  Fortunately we got him, but I remember thinking what a kick in the nads it would have been had the Longhorn defender not made that play.

So many memories of the day, but what I remember with a bit of regret is how the actual day ended.

We were up early trying to deal with a ticket SNAFU (some of you who bought through a Texas Exes vendor may remember that).  With the early start, the bus ride to the Rose Bowl, the tailgating, the intense game,  the long wait to get out of the Rose Bowl and the interminably long ride back to the hotel, we were spent after drinking all day long.  We went up the hotel bar for some wings and beer. When the game highlights came on, we cheered with all the other tired fans.  I felt like we should be at some incredible street party or whooping it up somewhere instead of stumbling through a relatively quiet hotel bar.  But, that was all we had in us by then and there were no obvious options around us.  We drank some more and headed up to the room.   Blah.

I did a behind the scenes tour of the Rose Bowl this past Saturday.  My FIL, who was a 50+ year member of the Tournament of Roses and about the biggest Trojan honk on earth, passed in December and one of his dying wishes were that some of his ashes be strewn on the field.  Which is illegal so of course we didn't do that (cough).  But I posted this pic in another thread.  This is now prominently displayed below the press boxes on ground level.

My favorite memory was selling our 4 seats to the game for $1,000 ea to Texas fans.

I rushed out of the Rose Bowl after the trophy presentation to get to LAX for a red-eye back to Houston and then a connection to Columbus for my sister-in-law's funeral the next morning (my wife insisted I go to the game).  I'm waiting to board my flight, still decked out in Texas gear, when a t-shirt USC fan coming off the plane actually starts talking shit about how USC is going to crush Texas.  MF'er didn't even know the game just took place.  I don't even remember what I said to him, but I do remember how happy I was to say it.

It all started with a discussion about how we were driving there with some buddies and I’m trying to convince my best friend to go. He respectfully declined at a Christmas party we went to and on the way home we were cruising down 360 and BAM we hit a the biggest buck I’ve ever seen at about 3am near 360 and 2244. Insurance check comes through for him a few days later....and bam, he’s in for the road trip of a lifetime.

Phase 1)

I should start by saying that we first went to the Alamo Bowl to see Nebraska play Michigan with a weird ending where Michigan almost ran back the final kickoff with some laterals. We went because one of my best buddies little brothers played for Nebraska and he ended up getting caught on the river walk with some weed after the game and kicked off the team. Nonetheless we all got wasted, acred like proper donkeys and had the first game in the books.

Phase 2)

We rent a shit mini van and make the drive to Phoenix, AZ. We end up in a nice hotel in downtown Phoenix and are set for the following day to go to the Fiesta Bowl. We’re next to Sun Devil Stadium (the bad ass stadium not that new shit) drooling over the plethora of AZ sluts and hammering werewolf killers (Coors light sponsored event) like they were fresh filtered waters in the middle of the Sahara. Some dildo walks in the bar and says he’ll sell his tickets right now as it’s the 2nd quarter. We offer him $20 and waltz in the game. There we are, about 30 rows up on the 50yd line watching Ohio St and Notre Dame go at it. Jeff Samardzija, Ted Gin, etc...

So sometime in the 4th quarter, I go get a hotdog. In the condiment line this Oh St dipshit cuts to the front of the line and everyone starts losing their mind. For some odd reason I happened to be wearing a navy blue t-shirt (not planned). I went to confront him, he kindly tells me to fuck off, mashed mustard and his hot dog in my face. I said, “jokes on you pal, I’m from Texas, we beat your ass (show him the Longhorn tattoo) and you’re without a hot dog now.” Notre Dame fans were cheering me like I was Rudy. I’m covered in mustard for an excellent performance ahead of me in Tempe for the evening.

A bit later, I’m wearing this mustard covered shirt and we are talking to the whole bar in Tempe as my band of monkeys and me are absolutely skilled in idiotic drunken performances. At some point we get an extra filthy round of black Chardonnay (Jagermeister) and right before I take the shot a guy in an Ohio St jersey asks, “Hey Texas, tell me who wins and why in the overly hyped title game.”

I hold my shot, look over to him and his sea of Ohio bar flys and I say, “Listen here, if you were paying attention, we beat Ohio st and the buckeyes just beat Notre Dame. In order for USC to beat Notre Dame, they had to have the Bush push just to run past those competent Catholics. So, my math comes to Texas by 3!!!” I slam my shot, my boys agree....and so with another night of shenanigans, we were soon on our way to LA the next day.

Phase 3)

The next night we ripped in on sunset Blvd, near the primrose hotel, the rainbow room and some other bars in a stupid part of California. I specifically remember this guy smoking his brains out on the patio of he rainbow room and everyone treating us like the complete dickheads that we actually are. You’d hear, “have a nice trip home after you get your ass kicked tomorrow.” And many other comments that capture the confidence and lack of awareness of facing the greatest Rose Bowl performer in the history of the game.

So we continue to ramp it up and we end up ordering late night room service and my buddy eats some bad chicken. To cut to the chase, the next morning I’m ready to bite the neck of of every bottle thrown my way and one of my buddies, has really bad food poisoning. He looks like McConaughey in Dallas night club, he’s sweating like a blind lesbian in a fish market, shitting and throwing up every time he can smell porcelain. So...here we go.

Some of the monkey bus had tickets. Some did not. Me and my buddy did not have tickets so we were slamming drinks to make our way to Hooters on Colorado Blvd to catch the game. I was young, broke and careless. The game meant everything in the word to me but I simply did not have the resources to get into the stadium.

The scene was nuts. Colin Cowherd and his live radio show after blazing through the hills to Pasadena in a psycho’s cab that cost over $200. I’m blasting my buddy telling him to quit being a pussy and drink more while he looks like it’s his last moment after his battle with the 16th century plague.

I keep going while he gets in a cab around halftime and leaves as his insides are completely gone. I meet up with friends, celebrate, and do everything you can possibly imagine until 4am west coast time. We get back to the hotel and I begin hitting my buddy in the face with a #1 whataburger cheeseburger meal (no tomatoes) screaming that it was the best day of my life and I can’t believe we won. Me and the other monkeys were jumping on the bed being complete jackasses and we finally cooled down after my buddy clearly didn’t feel well and did not enjoy the shenanigans.

The next morning we need to drive north to go skiing in Arizona. We wake up and turn on the TV. My buddy that was deathly ill sits at the end of the bed. ESPN is on.

I notice something. His eyes get wider and wider. His jaw gets lower and lower.

“What tha fuck!” He screams

“I went to sleep. I felt horrible, I turned it off when we were down big. It was 6 minutes left!!!! We fucking won???? I thought you guys were just being dickheads about us wining when you stormed in at 4am!!”

He missed the whole fucking thing....he missed the greatest championship comeback of all time.

I commented on ESPN radio the next day while we were in the Mom van on the way back. The question was, “who do you pick #1 after last night?”

My first sentence, “Did you even watch the game last night?”

1. The fourth down measurement, mentioned by other posters.  The raucous yells from USC fans when they set the marker down short of the ball, followed by the even louder cheers from the Texas fans when they actually stretched out the chain.  Fastest momentum swing ever.

2.  Right after the final play, when pandemonium was breaking loose, the main scoreboard briefly flashed "CONGRATULATIONS USC - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!"

I swear you can hear the USC fans cheer on the TV broadcast when the ref first sets the stick down on the 4th down stop. They thought they had it.

A couple of things that have always stuck with me were how loud the "Eyes" sounded at the end of the game and just how euphoric I felt in the following days. My dad and I drove to Vegas the next day, and, to use a cliche, I felt like I was walking on a cloud everywhere we went.

I also had a buddy that paid a cop a few hundred bucks to handcuff him and walk him into the stadium under the assumption he was being detained. Once inside, the cop let him go. He bounced around the stadium, standing in aisle ways.

I was a DOD contractor working in Iraq.  Seemed like everyone around me at work didn't give Texas a chance.  I was on the receiving end of quite a bit of shit talk.  All I would say is "we'll see".  I didn't have a TV in my trailer, so I got up at like 2:00 AM and went to the office and watched the game on a tiny TV.  My nerves were completely shot.  I remember I got up and ran outside twice during the game.  Once after the measurement and again after VY scored.  I was the only person in our work trailer that actually watched the game.  By the time the other got to the office the game was over and it was glorious letting them know.

I attended with an old fried of mine, and it should go without saying that we were definitely intoxicated, but after the game we walked around the Rose Bowl at least twice looking for USC fans to fight. As I recall there were no takers but my memory is pretty fuzzy. I'm sure we looked totally harmless as drunk on tequila (our go-to flask filler) and pure MNC euphoria as we were.

Also a few times in the 4th my buddy hollered (paraprhasing) "God, I'll never ask for anything ever again if we can win this game" so IMO that right there explains our football team's performance since. I warned him about the consequences and he gave no fucks and repeated himself. So there you have it.*

My favorite moment might have been the interception near our own goal line that was initially ruled incomplete. Crowd went nuts when they made that call, and then it got really, really loud when they showed the replay.

Also we tailgated next to some USC fans that were grilling Cornish Game Hens or some shit and drinking wine. We gave them endless shit about that and they were great sports about it.

* I reminded him of this during the next one when... Well, you know when.

This.  Calls the entire story into question.

They used to have them in California. I will not waiver from this minute detail. You can find that they have. I vividly remember that orange and white stripe bag wailing across his face as if it were yesterday. This particular one was in Valencia.

My wife got two tickets, stuck them in a vase full of roses, and promptly told me to call my buddy and go to the game. We sat right behind the Texas band tuba section and enjoyed some of the filthiest taunts and insults I've ever heard. Watched Selvin young run it in right in front of us, and later saw Tarell Brown break his arm at our goal line. When VY crossed the line on the other end of the field, our section went totally berserk. I've never witnessed anything like it. It was like a bomb full of cocaine had gone off -- everyone exploded, screaming, crying, jumping around, high fiving, hugging....total strangers just going absolutely maniacal with unbridled joy. I still have the video I took on the final play and love watching it. Seriously one of the greatest days of my life.

While technically true, unless the poster got into a Delorean with a flux capacitor, there were no Whataburgers in Southern California in 2006. Last one closed sometime in the 80's.

We showed up at about 8;00 am and parked on the golf course near the 9th hole and started gitting our game on.  After all you can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning.  We tailgated with some really friendly USC folks and got hugged on my some of the most beautiful women I have ever put my hands on.  Tit and ass petting, etc.

Bought souvenirs and were in line with “Da Fonz”. And man he is really short.  Tailgated with these other USC folks who were handing out free malt drinks that were way too sweet, but one of my friends really liked them and was just getting hammered.  We were so drunk by the time we went to our seats...

I was using my trusty camelback blatter and hose program and had a quart of Crown in my pants.  THe valve leaked and I had Crown all down my jeans.  I was worried that I was going to get busted so I poured beer on it to hide the whiskey smell.  Yeah I was that drunk.  Walked up to our gate and there was absolutely no security.  I could have walked in with a handle in each hand.

We were on about the 5 yard line up near where ESPN had their stage.  We got everyone to start yelling “Herbstreet”. When ever he was talking and he even waved at us.  You know, HEEEERRRRRB. STREEEEEEET!

The game, heartattack drama for the whole thing.  When Reggie tried to do the lateral.  Then VINCE FUCKING YOUNG!!!!

My friend who was drinking all the malt junk was sitting in a different part of the stadium.  He vomited all over the folks in front of him and spent the second half passed out in our car.

When we finally staggered out of the stadium we couldn’t find our car because we were only by the 7th hole not the 9th.  We were frantically calling the guy who drove accusing him of leaving us...  We found him and ol’Milky passed out and then went to the In and Out Burger and had the “Tell your Butt Puppet to shut the fuck up”. Moment.

We were so hung over the next day flying out.  Greatest game I ever went too!

I also used the blatter program for the OU game.  We had upped our LHF so we were under the deck with serious alumni.  I pulled the hose out of my pocket and started squeezing my junk where the blatter was and this nice Milf looked over and said “Son just what are you doing?”  I smile and she held up her coke for me to service.

What a fucking season!!!

I was a young airmen at Shaw AFB I had 5 friends over all from SoCal.  I was the only Texas fan. I had a 1 year old asleep. All game these fuckers talked shit. All game they talked about Texas football not being good. Until the stop. The stop that woke my son up and my wife bitching. The stop that shut those fucks up. Stoic as fuck I looked at them and said ball game fuckers. VY about to spray your faces. They knew it. One dude left on the TD with my son screaming I went sprinting into my front yard yelling. My neighbors called the cops. He understood and let me off with a warning.  3 of those fuckers Unfriended me

Bladder.  The word you are looking for is bladder.

That's where I sat, and I recall saying that to my wife.  But I was only in my 40's at the time.  If it was me, I do have children, twin boys, and I stand by my words, it was the happiest day of my life.  But the proudest day of my life was this past weekend attending UT Freshman orientation for both of them.

Sat in the opposite end zone from the orgasm. Was offered $2000 for my ticket walking into the stadium. I seriously considered it because I was a broke twenty-something Dad and I never win at gambling. I ended up taking down the house that night. I can’t remember either of my kid’s first words, but I’ll never forget how loud The Eyes was that night. My only regret is that it happened before the advent of the smartphone. I still have my Razor with crappy pics and video.

Plenty of pics from 2009, until I walked into a rooftop pool in Hollywood Hills and almost missed the game because no one could reach me.

took a charter out therr

Cotton Speyer was in our group.

Stayed all the way out in Dana Point for some reason.

The charter company would never give us our tickets, the whole time... so the running conversation was obviously "where are our seats"

Bus takes us all the fucking way from Dana Point to the Rose Bowl... still no tickets.

"Tailgating".. whatever... nobody gives a shit... where are our fucking tickets?

ESPN starts and ends their show in the parking lot with Jackie fucking Sherrill there some how... still no tickets.. the bands are assembling to march in, the biggest thing to happen to my school, athletically, in my life and I am drinking Tito's next to a bus in a parking lot in California.

"Tickets are on the way... just too much traffic trying to get in here"

Somebody is going to be assassinated at this point.

Last minute.. dude shows up with the tickets... my then wife and I got "Section 2"..bout half way up and in the center of the SC end.

She and I were the only burnt orange specks in a sea of those entitled pricks.

I took shit.. even from the sixty year old something SC professor that kept yelling "MACK.. YOUR TEAM IS ILL PREPARED" starting with Ross's fumbled punt return and continuing through most of the rest of the game.

I lost my give a shit after I met Henry Winkler in line for another vodka Redbull and started throwing my tiny wife up and down everytime something positive happened for Texas.

The only good thing about section 2 was that it is directly on the goal line where history happened, and I was able to convey my thoughts and realease YEARS of pent up shit, up to and including the ticketing fiasco.. to every one there.

A couple of SC ladies hugged me, impressed with my vigor.

Fuck that bus... I met Selvin Young on the field after a very emotional "Eyes Of Texas" and and stayed out in Pasadena until 8am the next day.

Visiting NYC and was at some UT-ex bar, but it was also advertised to the USC alum so the patrons were half half.

Great game through most of it.  At around T-5m or so, i remember accepting that slow sinking feeling of accepting a loss.  (They had just scored a 2nd TD in the quarter, to our lone FG).

And then Vince Young happened....  those USC fans never had their mood flipped upside down so quick...
