I drove a 40th anniversary edit long ago. Fun car but…

The A/C doesn’t work for Texas, and the huge central tunnel makes you rest you legs against it and get carpet sweats.

If the digital dash, pray it doesn’t break. Impossible to fix or replace. The only other main issues were the electrical system (seemed to eat batteries - which is a pain in the ass to access) and the ever-present cooling issue. Always fighting with part of that system as it just didn’t like 100 degree summer days.

Starter sucks too, but GM.

Thanks. This is good info too.

I’m under no illusion - he will wreck it. Every teen wrecks. It’s not that expensive so it’s not about that. A very serious wreck yeah I’d be worried. But it’s got airbags and good crumple zones on the front. but no it’s not a Camry or Volvo. I’ll say though I actually ran a pretty good record one wreck in my first 4 years then none for a long time. Then a rash of wrecks but I’m not gonna tell you what those coincided with, i’m already getting enough heck as it is. 🙂

I don’t know that I would trust 20+ year old airbags to perform when it matters.  Just food for thought.  Back when I was in a customer-facing role in the insurance business I would print out my own driving record and claims history to show parents who flinched at the cost for insuring male teenage drivers.  Generally speaking, they suck at driving.  Good students, bad students, dweebies, dickheads, they all suck until they get some miles under their belt.

edited to add:  the two pieces of advice I would give people from my insurance days are: 1) buy teenagers something cheap,  big , and at least suv height when they first get their license, 2) don’t take up motorcycles as a casual hobby.  If you are a lifelong rider, go for it.  If you are very passionate about it, give it a go.  But if you just think it would be cool to ride a Harley every other weekend, don’t do it.

delete, post above cover 20yr air bags.

*I would also have been dead driving that car at 16. A roll over in a C4 convertible took 3 fingers from my old boss. My college roommate flipped his old man’s when someone pulled out in front of him on a hwy in SATX. Still a damn fast and dangerous car.

it has new tires.

inspection came back squeaky clean.  car's in fantastic shape.  I'm going to add an after market collision warning system I think plus new stereo with car play and bluetooth.

I'm working on a contract for him.  wrecks it he gets the remainder of my car budget to buy a new one ($4000 more or less). so he will learn on a beater if he fucks this up. first ticket (if it's under 20 mph over) he's grounded from it until he completed defensive driving, second ticket (assuming its under 20 mph over) it's a month.  3rd ticket (assuming under 20 mph over) the car is mine.  it has a governor on it at 100mph, I'm considering adjusting it to 85 mph.  gas is all his, insurance is half his, any increases based on driving record are all his, repairs are mostly his (I'll share in big ones *if* he's saved up $150-$200 per month).  I drug test him weekly, zero tolerance on alcohol and driving. zero tolerance on excessive speeding.

All diligent things, but behind the wheel of a car like that, and it's damned hard to not press the pedal (it would be for me, and I'm 58). You came here asking for advice, and giving a 16 year old a rocket ship is simply not what I consider prudent. That's just me, the first thing out of my mouth when the kids asked for something big was no, and they had to convince me otherwise.

85 MPH that you can get to in about 7-8 seconds (just guessing there) can kill you dead if you lose the back end.  For damn sure post some pics though !!

being fair here, my request for advice was actually pointed toward technical issues, not should I do it or not. A few guys got that.  To conVINCED's point, I'm stubborn like that.  For me I feel like I wasted at least 10-15 years being miserable and now I'm a "live large and drink every last drop with a slurpee straw" kinda gal and that's just who I am and how I make decisions.  Risk is not something I'm afraid of.  I get the risk, I knew it going in. Could be a disaster I get it.  I'm also working my son very hard and I will have hard, hard rules on this - and I'm not going to fuck around, that car will sit if he abuses the privilege.

My first car was a sports car, my ex hated her first car (Geo Prism), though her car was my law school commuter car and was one of the best cars I've ever had.  But we are predisposed to do what we are doing and it might be a very big mistake.  I do think though that a governor on top end speed takes a TON of risk off the table.  And I will say that decision is a direct result of comments like "God saving a fool" and "sending a teen into a whorehouse with a wad of cash" and other less colorful but serious stories that made me ponder.

I might seem like I don't listen, but I do.  we are getting the car, that's done.  What I did change is setting some very serious rules and also not trusting him with the top end speed.

Now if he doesn't get a few blow jobs out of this, I'm going to be very disappointed.

Weekly drug tests?! Seems like there are already some fundamental trust issues.

And with all the GPS monitoring, speed governing, stepwise contractual agreements etc., that you have in mind with a car like this is actually more like sending him into a whorehouse with no money. What's the point of a Corvette if you can't drive it the way it was meant to be driven?

I'm not being flippant here, but as long as you're all in on the adult shit, you may also want to talk to him about organ donation if you haven't already. It may serve to help reinforce the stakes of this decision you both have made, and someone else's 16 year old probably really wants a kidney for his birthday.

Your kid will figure out how to disable the governor within a week.  What does that cost btw?  Just curious.  If my parents would’ve put one of those on my car there would be one more 87 Mustang GT still roaming the streets.  Also, as I learned from the movies, the ‘ Vette gets ‘em wet.

I'll drive it weekly and confirm. he disables it, the car is mine.  he's a teenage boy - he can't be smart and dumb at the same time here.  when he tries to get smart he's at his dumbest.  I'm a nosey, nosey parent. I'm always up in his business. I've also got a looooong track record of enforcing consequences that are more inconvenient to me than him.  he knows that.

I don't know what it costs, price doesn't matter, but I talked to the inspector guy , he said the 100mph was on it and told me I could get a different one lower.  I have 2 months before my son can actually drive the car alone (yes the keys will stay with me - and we have locked closets and other security features in our house to keep the kids safe from themselves).

I respectfully disagree.  weed is like beer when we were teens and I'm not ok with teens smoking weed.  It's extremely harmful to a developing brain.  I did and I wasted 2.5 years of my life.  I'm not letting that happen.  He actually has a lot of leeway with me.  He doesn't smoke, but he has and the way I nipped that in the bud was a 1, 2, 3 strikes on weed and I told him third strike I'm testing any time I like.  In a hood like Lake Travis, you've got to do something as most parents don't even care.  Every one of his friends and every one of their friends and theirs and theirs smokes.  it's just that prevalent and if I want him clean, I have to take a much harder position because my cohort of parents just don't give a shit.  Freedom is an interesting thing - you get more the more responsible you are and if you take the short cut to get more freedom you lose it.  But on weed in his school environment, yeah no longer "trusting" him as the context is way too unfair for him.  Frankly my tests are what give him cover to tell his friends no, so it's actually quite the positive for him.  For the most part he's got a lot of freedom but I'm not afraid to yank it from him.

Hopefully that doesn't just steer him towards drugs that metabolize out of the system more quickly, or those that aren't covered by whatever test kits you use.

two points - he's pretty scared of harder drugs, and regardless of what everyone says, weed is the gateway drug here so keeping him clean there is a big part of it. but second - he can't hide the changes drugs have on him.  grades, attitude, motivation, etc. etc. and I'll parent him then too. But the end yeah, if he really wants to get away with it, he's got 18 months til his 18th birthday at which point he will move out to do so.  the car is in my name though so if he moves out for that reason, I'll yank the car.

Not sure where all of you are in the child rearing phases, but I'll tell you, teens and weed are a very difficult thing to deal with now, much like smart phones and porn for the younger boys, weed is just everywhere.  how you handle it is up to you, but if you don't handle it, it will handle you.  I've just seen too much of it with kids that would otherwise be super engaged in other activities not to be active in that space.

he's a good kid, but he's a kid.  I'm going to do some responsible things to help mitigate risk but let him have a car that will make him happy.  in the end I really don't think that's all that crazy of an approach.

now i just hope this one's optispark holds out for a couple of years...

Alcohol is THE gateway drug, not weed.  Alcohol is what you encountered in the wood with the older kids or in the cull de sac, or stole from your parents. Weed comes after alcohol for most everyone.. This thread is drifting for sure.....

actually it's weed now.  my son tried weed in middle school before alcohol. it's easier to steal (every house has it now), it's easier to hide on your person, and it's everywhere.

sorry for the drift, I came to ask about technical issues with that model of corvette and I even posted pics.

Yeah touche', it probably is more accessible now.  I'm old....it was harder to find back in the day, and beer was what we could lay our hands on easier just opening  our parents refrigerators..

The corollary to my first car being a 65 Mustang with a newly rebuilt 302 is that after seeing what their most responsible son had done with that, my parents bought his just slightly less very responsible little brother an 82 Mustang LX with the 4 banger and just enough juice to get to school and back.

They’d learned their lesson.

Truth.  And not to break my arm patting myself on the back, but I was the proverbial good kid.  I got good grades, was successful in various extra curricular activities.  A regular Opie Griffith.  But damn that car was hot.

Looking back, I'm sure my Dad thought he was doing a good thing giving me the car he would've loved to have in high school.  But then later he also told me the various ways he'd nearly killed himself in it during his 20s, and I was like, "WTF Dad?  After all that you still gave it to me?"  His response was that he knew I was more responsible than he.  Which I was.  But it still didn't stop me from doing a few irresponsible things.  Ah well, youth.

I remember reading something about a dad who would buy his sons 60's, inline 6 mustangs that were basically a body, 4 tires, and an engine that would probably not start. He gave them the car, and a tool box, and said make it run, and it's yours.

That act apparently created a strong sense of ownership, and responsibility for the cars that made them value, and take better care of them.

I waited for a good while to get a decent shot of the "good vs evil" with my Skylark and the GNX. There were maybe 6-7 GNXs in attendance - kind of strange to see that many.

A couple dudes I noticed from afar arguing about something to do with my car - didn't make the effort run over to give them any resolution...

Just to get the thread back to classic cars. Here's 3 in one picture.  I really liked the color of the Camaro but I think it was a  one year wonder and not very popular since I think I have only seen 2 or 3 since. Hard to see in picture but it was light beige not white. Dad bought it used and i swear it must have been bought originally by Hertz.  Neutral color, small v8 but vinyl top. Inside pointed out that you could order cars back then with "odd" options. It had something like AC, power locks but manual windows, shifter was on the column and white vinyl seats.

My first car was this 69 mustang.

I still have it because in my senior year my dad traded me his 85 IROC Z for a few months.  I drove the IROC off a cliff on a tight corner and wedged it between the side of the hill and a tree.  Couldn't open either door and had to take off t-tops to get out.  Wish I could find a picture of that.

Beautiful.  This is all I've ever wanted.  I don't need a Ferrari or a Lambo, all I need, is one of these in my garage.

Yep, not really a fan at all of the Lamborghinis, or most of the other super cars, they look a bit comical to me. Ferraris's have some classically gorgeous lines, but I like my Mustang just fine, and dandy thank you very much...

I was so close to getting a brand new 85 Z with a 5 speed but I got a little squirrely in the test drive. Pops was not impressed. Ended up with an 82 Firebird with a whopping 165 hp 305 auto.

Y'all are some lucky mofos.  Must come from surly1%.

As mentioned before on this thread, my first car was an '81 Dodge Omni.  And not even a GLH or Shelby.  Just a two-tone beige and white shitbox with matching dents in both front fenders where my older sister tried to drive it between two trees at a high school field party.

My 1st vehicle purchase was swayed by having a friend that also had the same type.

Circa 1986, a 14 year old Beetle.  Not that old, yeah?  I currently drive a 2004 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins... 349,000 miles on it.  17 years old.  & In far FAR better condition @ 17 years old compared to the 14 year old bug... even though the Ram has it's own share of problems that are inherent with the Dodge name (don't even get me started on the Beetle's propensity for spontaneous combustion).

Anyhow, imagine this in a '72, functioning headlights, Florida plates vs. Virginia, soft blue color vs. red (whatever the factory blue version was back then) & since it's a VeeDub of that era, zero air conditioning with the exception of flipping the triangle vents to push some breeze.

When I got my 69 Mustang it was just an old car the neighbor was selling to get a more reliable one.  It would be like buying a 2000 mustang v6 for a kid today that had a so-so AC and stained carpet.
