Global Entry application

They’ve said the GE ID card isn’t really good for anything but at the St Thomas airport today, you had to have the card with you to go through the GE line at customs. Luckily we all had them with us so we were able to skip the poors line.
I never caryy my card. I'm curious about this. So if you do the GE in another country does that mean you just skip the kiosk in the US? Saves you 5 mins?

Never seen a kiosk in another country.  Somehow we got flagged by customs today coming back from Belize.  Had to go through the agricultural inspection area.  They x-rated our bag and never even opened it to search.  They couldn’t explain why we were there.  Global entry wasn’t much help today.  Flight was 2 hours late from Belize, so we missed our connection in Houston to Austin.  Luckily we all got a spot on the last flight.  It was a shit show all around today flying.

Based on this thread I looked into Clear membership. $179 but if you are a member of the Delta ff club or have the Delta amex card you can get a discount to $109 or $119 depending on your level. Costs $50 for additional family but they have to be older than 18 for some reason. Seems expensive unless you often find yourself in long lines at the TSA security checkpoint. As a GE/Known Traveler I don't have a big problem with it. With Clear they would escort you to the front of the line, even the KT line. I'm thinking about joining but probably not worth it. No credit card reimburses for Clear except for Centurion. Best you can do is get the discounted fee with the delta card/status or with United status. I guess Clear used to have decent perks but they reorganized and I don't see anything about perks on their site now. Also they're just in US airports on the departure side. If they could provide services on the international arrival side and hurry my luggage off the plane and into my hands they'd have my attention.

I think the USVI is a special case because flights go to the domestic terminals on the mainland but it’s outside the customs zone. So, they just have you clear customs there before you board. It’s the only time I was asked for the card.

I signed up for the Clear trial before my current trip but the lines leaving Houston were nil so I didn’t really see any advantage over my TSA precheck other than my wife had to use the regular line while the kids were covered with my TSA precheck.  Headed home right now and there was no Clear lane in their American terminal in Miami so got no advantage on the return trip.  I will be canceling my Clear trial before it expires and just stick with my GE...

There were plans right before covid to put customs and immigration agents in certain major airports like LHR but I guess covid paused that.

Also I think a lot of you are missing the point on CLEAR.  Unless you consistently fly out of a major airport it's not really something you are going to use 80% of the time.  If you fly once or twice a year your odds of needing it at all are really low.   If you fly 10 times a year and you are spending +$20k a year on travel spending ($99 in my case) is really nothing to avoid the 2-3 times where the ID check line is 30 mins long.    It's like a lot of things.  You hope you don't need it but if you do you sure are glad you have it.   It's just a tool you keep in your back pocket.

AMEX platinum now reimburses Clear annual fee up to $179 per year. They're also boosting the annual fee for that credit card to a ridiculous amount while throwing in a few more benefits like Clear that you may not gaf about.

edit - it appears that the benefit would be good for both the main account holder as well as an additional card holder (like your spouse) but I haven't verified that.

Tangent and probably the credit card thread, but Amex is really taking Plat in an odd direction with the recent annual fee and "benefits" increases. For me, the card is rapidly losing its justifiable value.
Sapphire Reserve just increased the fee by 100 as well.

Is that the thread nobody's posted in since August or am I failing in search? https://www.surlyhorns.com/board/index.php?/forum/35-6th-street-journal/page/2/  I've been wondering what to do about our plat card. The only benefit I really value is the centurion clubs. The wife travels solo on occasion too and I know the centurion lounges are super important to her. The rest is just nice-to-haves at best - just stuff you have to spend your time squiggling through amex's terms and conditions so you feel like you're earning enough of your annual fee. Even their Fine Hotels and Resorts program has negligible value since hotels figured out they can just charge amex customers more per night for the extra benefits they offer.

Has anyone done the interview on arrival lately?  I plan on doing it Monday when I re-enter from Mexico.

Do you have to make an appt for the interview on arrival, or just submit your app in advance and get approval to go to the interview stage?

It's actually "Enrollment on Arrival" - if you are conditionally approved and just pending an interview, all you have to do is show up when you arrive from international travel and do it on the spot.

I'm sure it's somewhere in the first 6 pages...but just got my re-up email.  I let it lapse during Covid, didn't even really think about it.  But gotta get back up in the air so renewed it and they re-upped me without going back of line/new interview/new background check.  Anyway, message said my number was rebooted so I'm good to go on entering it when I book tickets...but there was literally no mention at all about my existing card.  I tested it out and yeah...my old number still works under the TSA box of a flight reservation...but what about when I get to the airport to actually scan through the TSA priority line when they do the scan thing?  Will my old card just suddenly come to life?  Weird that there was zero mention of that in any of the 2 emails I just got.  I can't be the only one that just forgot about it during 18 months of no international travel.

Thanks to any of y'all with insight here!  Drinks on me at that one bar in that one terminal.

When I renewed a year or so ago, after mine lapsed, they sent me a new card.

I applied and got the ‘schedule your interview’ a month later, went the next day. Everything fine. But some cocksucker forgot to enter it in the system so I’m stuck in govt office limbo hell and haven’t had the patience to sit on hold for hours.

Did you ever need to use the card whilst waiting on the new One though?

No I didn't. Matter of fact, I've never had to use it. I add my number to my airline profile, and it always gave me pre-check. Coming back into the country I just scanned my passport. I used the card once going through TSA, but that was just because I wanted to make sure it worked. Nobody has ever asked me to show my card.

The card is mainly used if you have that added feature for expediated passage at select Canada-US land border crossings. It has to have that extra feature endorsement on it to be accepted.

However, we could show them to use the Global Entry line flying from St Thomas back to the mainland. Maybe trusted traveler numbers are not included on domestic tickets? No idea why.  Even though it's considered a domestic flight, it's outside of the customs zone so you have to clear customs in St Thomas prior to boarding to the US.

Back when I was traveling back and forth to Calgary, you needed to have the card to jump the security cue in Calgary and sometimes only Nexus holders got the jump.  I went ahead and got the Nexus card but now that I tried to renew my GE, I included Nexus but you can't do that renewal at normal GE offices and he nearest one to Texas is St. Louis...  Of course if you paid for the NEXUS renewal and then decide you want just the regular GE, you need to start over and pay the fees again...

A few years back, when I reviewed mine, it stayed in that status for 9 months. During that time Mrs Mo applied and got hers back, while I waited. Who knows why it took so long,

My Global Entry expires in June so I submitted a renewal application, which is now pending.

The GE application website said that due to increased application volume and a backlog, they have extended the grace period for expiring memberships to 24 months. That’s crazy but I won’t argue. Does anyone know if that includes Precheck as well, or will I lose my Precheck access while waiting on GE to be reapproved?

Clear is the bomb. I fly ~20 times a year out of Denver and Houston and other airports. I like being able to just roll up, walk through, and hit the lounge.

Wait, so you get to DIA early enough to visit the lounge before your flight?  Why would you do that to yourself?

Most of my flying is 20 hour + international trips. I like to settle in and have a drink or two before I start that party. Plus I take the train to dia from downtown and I like to leave a little leeway 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Gotcha.  International changes the math a bit, for sure.

Just a heads up. Read an article yesterday that a few people are being asked for their global entry card before going into the GE area. CBP has stated that should not occur. I guess the poors are trying to use GE. You might consider throwing your card in your bag on your next international trip

Yup. They asked me for it in Toronto. I was like, no why tf would I carry it, I’m flying. They let me through anyways (it was just for the GE/Nexus security line) and then the kiosk recognized my face immediately when I bypassed the regular customs line at YYZ

Renewed my GE toward the end of last year and got conditionally approved in November. No interviews available at DFW before doomsday. Even using the appointment tracking sites there was nothing viable. My only “realistic” option was to get to Del Río. My GF’s mother travels there to see family so, WTF, we’ll go with her sometime soon.

Got an email yesterday that I’d been approved, no need for an interview, effective immediately with a new expiration date.

Is this just a recognition that they really can’t keep up with demand or something else? Not complaining, but when I got the “status changed” email and saw “no active applications” some strong complaints crossed my mind at first.

I renewed my son's GE. Instant approval.
The card is worthless if you are traveling by air. Some people have reported being asked for it in order to use the kiosks

I’ve never been asked but this is why I carry it on most every trip.

Even though they say it’s only required for arrival by land or sea from Canada or Mexico I don’t put it past customs to no misapply their own policies.

Toronto Pearson asked me for it.  I will not be traveling through a Canadian airport without it now.
