Minnesota coach PJ Fleck gets contract extended through 2026

Nov 5, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Undefeated and 13th-ranked Minnesota has agreed with coach P.J. Fleck on a contract extension through the 2026 season, including an annual raise of more than 25% from his current salary and an eight-figure buyout for the first year to cover the university if he were to leave.

Fleck signed his new deal on Tuesday afternoon, delaying his regular weekly news conference by a half-hour. The contract, which is pending final approval by the Board of Regents, will pay Fleck $4.6 million in 2020 with a $50,000 raise scheduled for each season thereafter.

His prior deal from 2017, when he was hired away from Western Michigan, had him making $3.6 million this year. The original contract also called for a $1 million payment to Minnesota per remaining season on the deal if Fleck were to skip out, but now it would cost him $10 million to do so anytime before Dec. 31, 2020. Fleck did his best to put to rest any concern about him using the Gophers as a steppingstone to a more prominent program.

I know but I love anything that shits on Tilman.

I'm surprised Northwestern has not done better. They made big investments in fb and expected to become like Stanford, not stay like Northwestern. The facility is pretty incredible but the recruiting bump has not met expectations.

Man, you could build a really good staff from that group. I like Hand and would immediately trade him for Bloomgren, I'll also take Mason, Addazio, Brohm, Sitake and Frank Wilson while I'm at it. Could Tom manage that type of a staff?

Saban manages staffs like that every year, but not many  could effectively handle that.   You need giant balls to smother all those egos if you want a high power staff like that.

Tom can't even handle the shit eating tweedle dumbs he has,  so I would have to say no.

Taggert to Alabama as a consultant by this weekend, calling my shot right now.

Going to Alabama as a consultant is like rehab for coaches.  It gets the stink of their last job off of them, and then they can go  back into the pool.

If you’ve ever read the blog portion of coacheshotseat.com, you know two things.

First, the guy is a bit unhinged. He regularly posts these Bob Wheeler-style, ellipse-filled  rants about “real men” based on platitudes quoted from their ghostwritten autobiographies.

Second, the rankings are kind of just his opinion of who should be fired, not rankings based on insider info, rumors, or anything like that.

Yep honestly, we could do better, occasionally he has some first year head coaches in there which is just ridiculous.  He also doesn’t care when they got extended, which matters.

There's votes of confidence, then there's pretty much the opposite of that:

"Coach Muschamp is my coach. That's the message. He will be my coach through the end of the season," Caslen said. “And then, just like any other coach that's out there, whether it's a soccer coach, whether it's the equestrian coach, whatever, they're going to do an end-of-year assessment, the athletic director does. Then, we'll see what’s up.”

COLUMBIA — It’s been a frustrating football season at South Carolina. Nobody’s happy with the results on the field, and there have been plenty of discussions about the future of head coach Will Muschamp.

Some scream for him to be fired. Some defend him.

And one person no longer works for him after allegedly fighting with another man who was dressed as Muschamp for  Halloween.

Aubrey C. Walker, a USC student manager on Muschamp’s staff, was let go from his position after being arrested on Halloween night. Columbia police records show he was charged with public disorderly conduct and taken to jail after physically fighting with another man in Columbia’s Five Points district.

Walker apparently took offense to the man’s Halloween costume, which depicted Muschamp holding a sizable check.

  • By David Cloninger dcloninger@postandcourier.com

The costumed man’s name was not listed on the police report. But with the incident happening at a crosswalk in the middle of Harden Street on Halloween night, several people witnessed it.

Walker “appeared to be intoxicated” at the time, the police report says, and continued to be “loud and boisterous” when an officer attempted to stop the fight. He was taken to jail and released the next day on a $257.50 personal recognizance bond.

“I heard one of the cops say, ‘He said he works for USC football,’” one person who witnessed the incident said. “I thought, ‘Oh, that makes sense.’ He never said a word the entire time but he didn’t like that check.”

A USC spokesperson confirmed that Walker was removed from working as a student manager. Walker did not respond to a request for comment. His attorney, Columbia’s Neal Lourie, confirmed Walker was his client but declined further comment.

The Post and Courier obtained a photo of the costume. The man is dressed in Muschamp’s game-day attire, wearing all-black clothing with a headset and eyeglasses. He’s holding a giant check.

The check is in the amount of $18 million with “Buyout” written in the memo space (Muschamp’s buyout would be around $18.75 million if he were to be fired on Dec. 31). It is made out to “Will Muschamp” and signed by “Every Gamecock Fan.”

Rutgers: The return of Greg Schiano as head coach, which had reportedly been “at the goal line” last week, hinges on the 14-person Board of Governors, who is expected to recommend Schiano’s full hire, according to NJ.com. By law, the BOG must provide a 48-hour heads up before convening in a special meeting to vote on the hire, needing a majority vote for final approval and the article adds that introductory presser could be later this week.

Report: SC staffer allegedly fought man dressed as Will Muschamp

By GARRETT STEPIEN       14 hours ago

The 2019 college football season at South Carolina has been a roller-coaster ride, center on the Gamecocks' future with fourth-year head coach Will Muschamp.

Since South Carolina (4-7, 3-5) upset then-No. 3 Georgia (9-1, 6-1) 24-17 in double overtime Oct. 12, the Gamecocks have lost four of their past five games as they enter Saturday's open date.

So South Carolina's week off should be quiet, but recent headlines have made the past couple of days anything but that.

The latest news story to pop up came Tuesday when the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier reported that the Gamecocks fired a member of the football team's coaching staff for allegedly fighting a man dressed as Muschamp.

Citing Columbia (S.C.) police records, the Post and Courier report said that former South Carolina dismissed student manager Aubrey Walker after he was arrested on the night of Halloween for fighting another man dressed as Muschamp, subsequently spending his night in jail for public disorderly conduct.

A spokesperson for South Carolina confirmed that Walker was terminated from working as a student manager.

Walker, meanwhile, did not respond to the Post and Courier's request for comment.

Walker appeared to have taken offense to the man's impersonation of Muschamp for Halloween, a costume that the Post and Courier's report said "depicted Muschamp holding a sizable check."

The Post and Courier said that it obtained a photo of the man's Muschamp costume, which included a typical Gamecocks game-day outfit in all-black clothing, a headset and eyeglasses.

The "giant check" was made out to "Will Muschamp" in the amount of $18 million with the word "Buyout" written in the memo space and signed by "Every Gamecock Fan."

According to the Post and Courier's report, Walker "appeared to be intoxicated" during the alleged altercation and remained "loud and boisterous" when a police officer stepped in and tried to stop the fight.

Muschamp is 26-24 overall and 15-17 in SEC play with one game left in his fourth season as South Carolina's head coach.

He leads the Gamecocks into a daunting task of a season finale next Saturday, Nov. 30, when they host their in-state rival — No. 3 Clemson (11-0, 8-0 ACC) — at noon ET on ESPN from Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.

The off week started Monday with a report from SCNow.com that South Carolina president Bob Caslen said that athletic director Ray Tanner reached out to Florida State officials for advice on how the Seminoles parted ways with second-year head coach Willie Taggart, who was fired Nov. 3 despite being owed $18 million.

“No, but our athletic director has,” Caslen said, according to SCNow.com. "And they’ve got a whole lot more money in their athletic endowment than we do. I know that, for a fact.

"Listen, for the record, (Muschamp) is my coach, period. And he’ll remain my coach, just for the record. If you look at the athletic director’s statement (Saturday, supporting Muschamp before his team’s 30-6 loss to Texas A&M), that’s the same that I endorse."

Caslen then retracted those comments later on Monday in a statement released through the university's athletics communications and public relations:

"Let me set the record straight: Athletics Director Ray Tanner did not speak with anyone at Florida State University about coaching contracts."
