That is at best a lateral move, but more likely a step down.  AZ is a horrible job.

BREAKING: Illini hire Bret Bielema as head coach

ByJEREMY WERNER 8 minutes ago

Illinois has hired former Wisconsin and Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema as head coach, the school announced on Saturday morning.

Bielema, a Prophetstown (Ill.) native, led Wisconsin to three Big Ten championships before moving on to Arkansas, where he led the Razorbacks to three bowl games in five years. Bielema will make $4.2 million annually on a six-year contract, Illinois announced. He will be at the Illini's game Saturday at Penn State.

"Illinois and the Big Ten is home for me, and I can't be any more excited about the opportunity in front of me with the Fighting Illini," Bielema said in a statement. "We want to build a program that makes Illini Nation proud and regain the passion that I've seen when Illinois wins. We want the young men playing football in the state of Illinois from Freeport to Cairo and from Quincy to Danville dreaming of wearing the Orange and Blue and playing at Memorial Stadium. I look forward to re-connecting with the high school coaches around the state making it clear we intend to keep our players home.

"We will build an outstanding staff for both player development and recruiting. The University of Illinois has incredible facilities and is known as one of the world's outstanding academic institutions. We will hold the young men on our team responsible both on and off the field while coaching them to be champions in life. Jen and I, along with our girls, are excited to get to Champaign-Urbana and get started on the journey. Go Illini!"

Illinois athletics director Josh Whitman said in a statement: "Bret Bielema is a proven winner. With three Big Ten championships to his credit, few coaches can match his familiarity with, and success within, the Big Ten Conference," said Whitman. "In our conversations, it became clear to me that he is a life-long learner who is continually looking to grow and improve, and he has enjoyed unrivaled mentorship from some of the game's most distinguished coaches, including Hayden Fry, Kirk Ferentz, Bill Snyder, Barry Alvarez, and Bill Belichick – all of them current or future Hall of Famers.

"Importantly to me, Bret, a native of our great state, grew up an Illini fan and is committed to seeing the football program at our state's flagship grow and prosper," continued Whitman. "Bret's blue collar work ethic and genuine, authentic manner will allow him to form strong connections to his players and staff and positive relationships in our community and our state. These qualities, combined with his commitment to education and his track record of success, give me great confidence in his leadership of our football program."

This is surprising...

Auburn appears to add another candidate in head coach search

By John Brice -   December 19, 2020

Auburn’s search for its new football coach has yet another name emerging in the mix.  Sources on Saturday told FootballScoop that Auburn, through their search firm, is vetting West Virginia head coach Neal Brown.  It is not known if the University has or will attempt to schedule a meeting with Brown.

Brown’s success at Troy, where his Trojans won 10, 11 & 10 games in ’16, ’17 and ’18, catapulted Brown to the head coaching position at West Virginia. Undoubtedly, the success he had 90 minutes down the road caught the eye of many an Auburn fan.  At WVU, the Mountaineers have won 5 games in each of his first two seasons leading the program.

Brown has a relatively friendly contract as it pertains to buyout terms, per his pact with the Mountaineers. Per a review of Brown’s contract, if he left West Virginia before the end of this calendar year, Brown would owe the school $4 million. If he left in the ensuing year, that figure drops to $3.5 million.

Auburn has interest and is in the process of conducting multiple interviews this weekend after it somewhat surprisingly fired Gus Malzahn, with a $21.45 million buyout included, last Sunday on the heels of the Tigers’ 6-4 campaign.

Interim head coach and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is a strong candidate. Auburn also has expressed interest in and worked to schedule interviews with Louisiana coach Billy Napier, Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, Brown and potentially other candidates.

Update on Auburn’s coaching search

By John Brice -   December 20, 2020

Auburn’s search for a new football coach is bringing in another name into the Tigers’ interview and vetting process: UAB coach Bill Clark.  Multiple sources late Saturday night told FootballScoop that Clark had emerged as “someone of significant interest” as the Tigers’ administration has continued to seek the right replacement for the fired Gus Malzahn.

Clark’s been a proven winner and garnered national attention for his work atop a UAB program that just a few years ago was shuttered. The Blazers on Saturday captured the Conference USA title at Marshall to wrap up their regular season at 6-3. It’s the program’s second C-USA title in the past three years, all under Clark’s tutelage, since UAB reinstated football in 2017.

An Alabama native, Clark has spent his entire career in his home state at both the high school and collegiate levels. Multiple coaches with deep Alabama ties spoke to FootballScoop about Clark’s strong respect at all levels in Alabama.  Clark declined to answer on Saturday when asked by reporters if he planned to or had been contacted by Auburn. Sources confirmed to FootballScoop Saturday night that there had been contact between Clark and the Auburn search committee/firm.

Though just a week old, Auburn’s search has been a wild ride.

College football coaches throughout the sport have indicated in-house candidate Kevin Steele, the Auburn defensive coordinator and interim head coach, had an immediate plan and pitch to Auburn officials on Steele’s credentials to be Auburn’s next head coach as soon as Malzahn was dismissed.

Steele’s marshaled key support in some corners at Auburn, including allegedly holding sway with key Tigers’ benefactors and some former players.  Auburn also has vetted and worked to set up interviews this weekend with Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and Louisiana head coach Billy Napier. Elliott has stated publicly last night, he doesn’t have any “plans to interview [with Auburn] tomorrow”.  Yesterday, we noted Parker had been vetting the candidacy of West Virginia head coach Neal Brown as well.

With Parker Executive Search assisting the process, Auburn is scheduled today to have multiple interviews with prospective candidates.

Report: Multiple NFL teams seeking to interview Pat Fitzgerald

By Doug Samuels -    December 20, 2020

https://footballscoop.com/news/report-multiple-nfl-teams-seeking-to-interview-pat-fitzgerald/

The potential opening to really keep an eye on here is with the hometown Chicago Bears. Born and raised in Chicago, we’re told that Fitzgerald is a top target for the Bears, should the job officially come open as many expect it to. The Bears and Matt Nagy had lost six games in a row before last weekend’s win over the Texans, and many believe a new direction is needed after they have slipped to 6-7 after starting the year 5-1.

Sources have shared with FootballScoop that with the turnover at Northwestern, Fitz appears more willing to consider NFL pitches this year than before.

Because of his body of work at Northwestern, especially the success they’ve had this year, Fitzgerald’s name will be one we continue to hear connected to NFL jobs as bowl season marches on. Chicago opening would mean that he wouldn’t have to move his family, and he’d be able to coach the team he grew up in the Windy City admiring. Those that know Fitz, know how much of a draw that could be.

Fat Pitzgerald is such a self-important ass-stick that it would be a lot of fun to watch the Bears job chew him up for a few years.

As candidates drop out, Auburn forges ahead in search

By John Brice -   December 21, 2020

Jordan-Hare-Stadium.jpg?fit=4239,2742&ss

On Monday, hours after interviewing with Auburn officials and “connecting well,” per sources, with Tigers’ director of athletics Allen Greene, Louisiana coach Billy Napier announced he was remaining atop the Cajuns’ program.

Additionally, Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian no longer is considering the Tigers’ top post, per sources with direct knowledge.

So, where now does Auburn turn?   Industry sources on Monday afternoon told FootballScoop that Auburn is speaking again this afternoon to UAB head coach Bill Clark, who first emerged as a potentially prime candidate for the job over the weekend after Clark’s Blazers captured their second Conference USA championship in three years.  Clark is 51-26 all-time as a college head coach, including an 11-4 run atop FCS Jacksonville State before winning 40 games in five seasons at UAB. Thirty-four of those wins have come in the four seasons since UAB’s resurrection from a self-inflicted death penalty. He was a championship coach in the Alabama high school ranks before taking the Jacksonville State job in 2013.

Kevin Steele remains the Tigers’ interim coach and has been an in-house candidate after making a bold push for the job in the aftermath of Gus Malzahn’s firing on Dec. 13. However, sources late Sunday and Monday told FootballScoop that the perception was that Steele’s candidacy for the vacancy was slipping.

The search is still ongoing. As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.

So is Greene staying at Louisiana like Nick stays at Miami and Mel Tucker stayed at Colorado, or is he really staying?
Because saying you are staying seems like it can be worth millions of $$$'s when it means you could move for the right price

I think you are referring to Napier???

Some comments on Finebaum just now suggests that Auburn may not be done with discussions with Napier... may be a smokescreen to get past upcoming bowl game for the Ragin' Cajuns...

"UTSA will face No. 16 Louisiana in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl on Saturday, December 26, officials announced on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the SMU campus and the game will be televised nationally on ABC."

Change of plans -- Major headed to the Redneck Riviera instead of Arky State

Sources: Major Applewhite pulls U-turn on Arkansas State, will now coordinate different Sun Belt school

By Zach Barnett -   December 21, 2020

Major Applewhite will not be the offensive coordinator at Arkansas State and will instead lead the offense at South Alabama, sources told FootballScoop on Monday.  Applewhite previously had a verbal agreement to join Butch Jones, whom he worked alongside on Alabama’s support staff for the past two seasons.

However, we’re told Applewhite had a change of heart and will now head to Mobile instead of Jonesboro. Applewhite never signed a contract with Arkansas State.  South Alabama and Arkansas State will play annually as rivals in the Sun Belt’s West Division.

Wommack and Applewhite have never worked together previously. Their paths have only crossed once, a 2013 Ole Miss win over Texas when Wommack was the Rebels’ safeties coach and Applewhite the Longhorns’ offensive coordinator.  In addition to Texas, Applewhite has coordinator experience at Rice, Alabama and Houston. He was Houston’s head coach from 2017-18, going 15-11.

We reported last night that McGill-Toolen head coach Earnest Hill will coach running backs for South. Bruce Feldman added Gordon Steele will coach offensive line and Rob Ezell will coach tight ends. We can confirm those hires. Receivers remains open at this time sources tell us.

Sources: Orgeron making major staff changes at LSU

By John Brice -   December 21, 2020

A tumultuous year defending its College Football Playoffs championship is ending with LSU again making significant changes to its assistant coaching staff.

Multiple sources have told FootballScoop across the past week and again Monday that Ed Orgeron is not retaining defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, after just one year with Pelini in charge of the Tigers’ defense in Pelini’s second stint in Baton Rouge.

Orgeron hired Pelini shortly after the Tigers’ 2019 CFP title when then-defensive coordinator Dave Aranda ascended to the head coaching post at Baylor.  As it struggled to a 5-5 season, coming on the heels of losing double-digit NFL Draft picks as well as wunderkind offensive coordinator Joe Brady to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, LSU battled a porous defense and a quarterback carousel in its 10-game, SEC-only schedule.  The Tigers, under Pelini this year, yielded 35 points per game and struggled especially in pass defense, where teams threw for more than 320 yards per game.  Said one source with knowledge, “I know Pelini knew he was out before the last game.”

Pelini’s contract was $2.3M per year for three years (so roughly $7 million) fully guaranteed.  Sources indicated to FootballScoop that additional changes also are expected to the LSU staff.   Ross Dellenger has shared, and we can confirm we’ve been told the same, that defensive line coach Bill Johnson is expected to retire and safeties coach Bill Busch is not expected to return.
