CFB coaching carousel

This seems like the wildest coaching carousel season ever and I’m here for it. Lots of good jobs open but not enough good coaches to fill them

Seems like many said the same thing about three years ago and two or three years before that.

As teams get quicker trigger fingers this is going to be the norm going forward.

Tressel wasn’t really well known but he won 4 national championships at Div I-AA Youngstown State. Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti was a candidate. During his interview he asked if Ohio State and Michigan play every year. When told that they do he said they have something similar, it’s called the Civil War. That ended his candidacy.

Sounds like casualfan folklore.

There’s some weirdness this season, too.

I give both Mullen and Orgeron slightly better than fifty percent chance to get one more year if their off-field behavior wasn’t so bizarre, whiny, and/or borderline sociopathic.

Lake almost certainly gets another year to pull it together at UW without his little on-field temper tantrum and player slap. UW isn’t a program that’s known for yanking the rug out as fast.

Its funny, the more coaches get paid “fuck you” money, the less likely admins and boosters will tolerate asshole, “fuck you” behavior.

With the salaries and buyouts these guys have, they’re laughing all the way to the bank.

Has the state of Florida ever been this bad at the same time?

Florida, Florida State, and Miami are all dumpster fires.

Florida State needs to buckle in with Norvell. His is a team that has gotten better, played tough against Notre Dame. I think they'll beat Florida this week and get themselves to bowl eligibility.  The team is going in the right direction. He is bringing in a good, not great class but it's a roster that can compete in the ACC. It's not a repair job, it's a rebuild and he's got them going in the right direction. I don't know if he'll build a dynasty there, but he can capitalize on disarray at Gata and the U to fix roster issues, get them into the 8,9,10 win season range. Then if they're not happy they can look around and get a coach in there to take the next step.

That was the ultimate nail in Mullen’s coffin. When you look at last year’s accomplishments it didn’t translate into recruiting.  It was more egregious when you look at Miami and FSU’s struggles. He should have been able to lock down everyone not going to Bama and Clemson at a minimum, but his class was still subpar. That’s why the next hire has to prioritize recruiting.  Mullen set this program back years.  The next guy should get more rope because of it, but now our AD is also on the hot seat, so who the fuck knows.

I think Norvell is pretty safe right now but he was pretty much dead man walking about six weeks ago. They aren’t back to vintage FSU standard by any means but as you pointed out they are improving week to week.

Provide a link.

You are the same old drunk that says you won’t read a quoted article without a link.

I heard it on the radio and that was years ago. Don’t be ridiculous.

How long have you been waiting to play that card? Probably a long time because if you follow my work then you know that when it comes to current events I always cite my source whether it’s tv, radio, or if there’s an article I can link to then I always post it.

Some insiders are saying Stricklin is leaning towards Billy Napier because he is the easiest to vet through his southeast connections. I don’t think that solves the recruiting problem. Florida needs a splash hire to get a solid class this year and knock one kit of the park next year. I think Kiffin would be that guy but people say Stricklin won’t go down that road. Cristobal is probably the best target out of the current realistic options.

The answer to that guy’s question is he thought this was his best ISU team, and that he could win the B12 with it. Now that he has failed to do that, he needs to jump while anyone still wants him.

Why would USC still want him? After all that, with USC pulling the trigger firing their coach and starting their search back in what, like week 2, they'll end up with Matt fucking Campbell? They settle for a barely 500 coach with what was supposed to be his best team ever who's a lifer in the rust belt/midwest. The guy who supposedly coaches up 2-3 star talent to play 4-5 star football (or whatever). That'll somehow translate to Los Angeles and USC? Talk about a horrible fit.

That’s a very good question. I was just responding to the question in the posted tweet, which assumed that USC was taking him.

Cristobal didnt do himself any favors with how his team finished the season. Even before the smooth buttfucking that Utah gave them, they were flirting with losses for awhile. The tOSU win looks pretty good, but it took awhile for Day to get Stroud cooking on offense. If they were to play now, tOSU would murder that Oregon squad.

Having spent 6 years at FIU, he probably has some good connections in and around Florida. On the flip side,  he left with a 27-47 record, although I'm sure the program was trash when he got there. I'd probably rather roll the dice with Joey Freshwater who had actual success to at FAU (26-13) after taking over a garbage team, and presumably has more recent recruiting connections.

I honestly don't know why Cristobal would leave Oregon. Everyone else is a mess in the PAC, he can haul top 10 classes, Uncle Phil pays the bills. Why go do a down to the studs rebuild across the country and fight with UGA, Alabama, Clemson, and everyone else for recruits?

These schools all have to hire someone. You have a bunch of good programs chasing around after folks like Franklin, Aranda, Fickell, and Napier. It's not clear to me Campbell is much of a step down from anyone in that group.

I agree. In this age of being able to basically pay athletes whatever you can afford, there are few places I would rather be than UO with Phil/Nike. I was just commenting on a potential move to Florida. I thihk you would be insane to make that move, when you can hang out in the Pac 12 with Uncle Phil.

With this coaching market, I don't think anyone would be upset with "settling" for Cristobal. He is an OL guy and has shown an ability to recruit and manage a staff. You can do much worse.

There are so many openings, the offseason coaching search will resemble a gangbang porno, with a bunch of AD's standing around with a maintenance stroke waitin' to get their dick wet. Ending up with Cristobal will seem like a win no matter where he goes. But, I think he stays put although his $4.5M/yr year salary is gonna get supersized.

Yep, and you really don't want to last as likely will not get who you want and will have to pay way more for them then you wanted

Speaking of Utah, if I were an AD I'd at least kick the tires on Kyle Whittingham.  He's had a long, consistent run of success. The program obviously has tougher sledding in the Pac-12 and they took a dip after joining, but he's got them back to regular 8-10 win types of seasons. He recruits better than he should there and gets kids in the NFL.

He's Mormon and it will be hard to lure him away, but USC or UW should for sure ask what it might take.

Because it’s easier to convince kids to move a 4 hour drive away from momma than a flight across the country. He hauls in top ten classes with that working against him, he can haul in top 3 classes if he’s recruiting kids to stay in state.  You need top 3 classes to compete for a MNC.  He has deeper roots in Florida than the PNW, so it’s not like a move across the country would be an issue,  he would be going home.

I do agree about the rebuild though, there’s no short term fix for Florida unless the portal is really kind. I also agree that it’s easier to sit in Phils pocket and be secure in your job with 8-9 win seasons.

UL’s AD seems to think Napier is leaving for Florida, as of yesterday.
