"Big" movies you've never seen

Some of these posts are mind bottling. I think I've seen most "big" or "classic" movies going back to the 1960s, and quite a few before that. Part of that I can thank my parents for, as they're sort of movie buffs. My Dad's DVD collection is impressive, to say the least.

I've never seen any Harry Potter, any Fast & Furious, and only the first LOTR. Couldn't give a shit about any of the recent "big" superhero movies.

The only other one I can think of is Grease, which came out when I was a little kid. My older sisters were crazy about it, so it was always on around the house, but I had no interest in it. I've seen enough scenes to feel like I've seen it, and I know the music. But I've never sat down and watched it from beginning to end.

Watch a random selection of a half dozen movies made in the 1930's. Then watch Citizen Kane. When I tune into an old b&w movie on TCM it's pretty easy to quickly guess whether it was made before or after Kane.

Not really all that important to me, most of the b&w movies I like are the gangster types with Cagney, Robinson and Bogie, Angels with Dirty Faces being my favorite, love the ending.

Unless you flat out are trying to avoid it, or really young, I don't know how an adult could have missed out on Caddyshack.  I'm only 34 and that movie was in heavy rotation on lots of TV networks when I was growing up.

31 here. It was on heavy rotation in my middle school bedroom because boobies.

Derka Goo is the only one on here to give a good explanation of why we hasn't seen a shitload of incredible movies that most of us think everybody has seen.  I'd like to hear from more of you how you have managed to have never seen The Godfather, Goodfellas, Lebowski, Shawshank, etc.  Start with your age and your favorite movie, and we can probably figure out the reason.

The one I listed, it never seems to show up on the boob tube and I never was that inclined to go rent it.

Have seen all of the ones that have been listed by others.

I turned 47 today. My favorite movie is The Princess Bride.

Well then you aren't one of the people I was wondering about.

Schindler's List - rented it from blockbuster way back and put the second VHS in first and watched the ending, was so annoyed I didn't watch it, still haven't.

Haven't sat through any of the Godfather's from start to finish

Gone with the Wind, Amadeus, Patton

Several Hitchcock movies. If it was made prior to 1970 and my dad wasn't watching it on holidays, I probably haven't seen it.

I've never seen Schindler's List. Went to see it, but ended making out during the movie with my girlfriend. To be fair, my parents were staying with me and we couldn't get any alone time.

That movie is an emotional trip... #GoodFlick...

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by all of this. I mean many of y’all love talking about recruiting 17-18 year old guys to play sports seemingly with no end. Don’t get me wrong, I love Texas football, but y’all’s priorities are all kinds of fucked up. Especially if some of y’all are also wasting hours of your life watching reality tv bullshit.

"Big" Movies I've never seen:

Schindler's List

The Goonies (seen bits & pieces)

Gremlins

Twilight series (my wife says they are "big"...whatever)

Predator

Alien (seen bits & pieces)

All of the other subsequent Aliens

That’s a solid list of a bunch of shit you don’t need to see. SL is the only one you should see and I’ve watched it once and never plan on watching it again.

Those are worthy of a watch.

Never seen Goonies or the Men in Black series, or the Matrix series.

The son looks at me in utter disbelief I haven't seen the matrix . All the way thru that is.

It depends. I’m too old for Goonies. It was probably a seminal movie of your youth. It wasn’t for me and I just can’t get into it. If you’re not big in sci-fi horror, then Aliens is optional.

I don’t think anyone is too old for goonies.

Never seen Goonies. I was 16 when it came out. Never saw the need but I know people are passionate about it.

There's no need to ever see any of the Twilight shit unless your wife guarantees you special sexual favors in perpetuity for putting up with that shit. But if she does, be warned she'll double down when you're visiting Olympic National Park & forces you to drive to Forks, WA where the shit is supposed to take place. It's a long ass drive to a nothing fucking town with nowhere good to eat (but you can at least pull into ONP at numerous points along the way).

I'm wondering how many of those who've admitted to not having seen Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Godfather, etc. have ever heard of "slightly" smaller films like The Graduate, Cool Hand Luke, The Searchers, Midnight Cowboy, Bonnie & Clyde, Double Indemnity, etc.

Y'all need TCM in your lives.

The Godfather II is so fucking great it is absurd and comical that someone would refuse to watch it just so they could say they have never seen it.  Your loss dumb asses.

I have zero interest in seeing it. I’ve seen bits and pieces of all three and nothing about them kept my interest, because Mafia movies in general don’t interest me. I didn’t like the Sopranos that much and stopped watching Boardwalk Empire for that reason. I don’t know if it’s becsuse the whole guido culture bothers me, or the whole crime family loyalty bullshit, whatever it is, it’s not for me.  I understand this perpelexes you. Some people just don’t like some things.

The problem with this thread is that it's about "Big" movies that you have never seen.  I don't see a problem about not seeing a "Big" movie.  Pearl Harbor and Mama Mia were both arguably big movies and they sucked.  There is no real loss in missing those.

Godfather I and II is simply in another class.  That would be in a thread titled "Great films that are part of our (and film's) cultural heritage that you haven't seen."

Part of the reason you watch these is so you can get an understanding of American and world culture.  So you can speak a common language of western civilization.  The same argument can be made regarding books like Grapes of Wrath or One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Some important movies are popular, and some popular movies are trash.  There simply isn't much of a debate about a movie like the Godfathers I and II or even Schnindler's List.

If a great and universally celebrated and critically acclaimed movie is not "your cup of tea" then you are simply not prioritizing your continuing and lifelong education.

You probably can't see how hard I just rolled my eyes.

However, if you try and tell me you never saw Point Break or Road House, then you sir, are dead to me.  Dead.

Are you referring to Hitchcock movies made before 1970 or just movies in general? Because all of the best Hitchcock films were made before 1970, most before 1960. If you're talking movies in general then I just can't fathom that. That's forty years of material you're missing out on.

This is the confusing part to me as well. I understand that there are plenty of people for which movies--and TV in general--just aren't their thing...I just wouldn't have expected to find them on an online message board, in a forum titled "Movies and TV" no less. You're okay wasting time talking to strangers about inane minutiae, but carving out a couple of hours for a popular movie you know is really good is pushing it? It's a weird disconnect for me.

Clearly, this thread also proves that some people take movies way too seriously; I don't love Star Wars, The Godfather, etc. nearly as much as most and I usually roll my eyes at all the "high art" talk...but you pretty much have to actively avoid seeing some of the movies listed growing up, unless you're Amish.

Same except I did see Forrest Gump about 8 years after it came out in theaters.

I keep meaning to watch the Godfather movies and Shawshank but never really feel like committing the time to sit down for a long movie.

Dude. I hate lists in general, and I don't know how they include A Hard Day's Night and not The Adventures of Robin Hood, for example, or a host of others. But I'm guessing you wouldn't score a lot of matches on any similar list.

I've seen the twelve you bolded and about 45 others from that list. (I even own A Hard Day's Night on DVD. Same with The Adventures of Robin Hood. At one time or another I've probably owned as many of those films on DVD as you've seen. I currently own half of those and some others you haven't seen like Cool Hand Luke and The Hustler.) You're missing out on a lot of great movies.

You should check out The Grapes of Wrath if you ever get the chance. Apart from the story, I don't know if I've ever seen a finer piece of b&w cinematic craftsmanship made prior to Citizen Kane.

And you have to see 12 Angry Men. I envy you your opportunity to see it for the first time. Do yourself a favor.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not avoiding any of them.  I just haven't gone down that rabbit hole yet. Sorta silly but one of my favorite movies from growing up is Harvey, watched it multiple times.

Then yer ripe for the rest of the B&W classics......  Cool Hand Luke.......  sometimes nuthin' can be a real cool hand...........

If you find Audrey Hepburn attractive, that's reason enough to see Roman Holiday. The story is lighthearted and kind of silly but they find every different way they can to make her look breathtaking. Hairstyles and wardrobe and settings high and low, you'll fall in love a dozen times over. I wouldn't put it on that IMDb list but it definitely has its charms.

You probably can't see how hard I just rolled my eyes.

However, if you try and tell me you never saw Point Break or Road House, then you sir, are dead to me.  Dead.

Point Break and Road House are national treasures and should be celebrated as such.
