Tom "the turtle" Herman [Lame Duck or greatest 5d chess player ever?]

Friendly reminder: Dabo Swinney went 6-7 in his third season at Clemson. The next year, be brought in Chad Morris at OC and Brett Venables at DC. And Clemson won the ACC Championship and never looked back.
Herman should emulate Swinney's example. Get two new coordinators and let them have real input.

Mensa ain’t bringing that quality of coordinators in.

This.  The position is bigger than the coach.  Its two worlds.  Dealing with the power on the inside and then coaching the coaches/players.  For all of Mack's problems he understood this and handled accordingly.

How does that effect his decisions on coordinators , position coaches , etc?

or schemes?

Apples and Oranges.

It’s bizarre that such a genius apparently doesn’t recognize :

-shit fundamental play

-failed schemes (that are repeated over and over)

- pathetic coaching and player utilization

- failure to take advantage of tactical in game situations

He doesn’t have to micromanage it, he just has to make sure it’s happening and if not correct the issue.

That’s what a decent HC does, not even at the high functioning level.

And yet , fielding the worst defense in the land and mediocre offense , that is bailed out occasionally by random exceptions of excellence thru athleticism rather than scheme/design, .....seems to be ok with the CEO.

Not clear why he cannot see these things and take corrective action but he doesn’t and won’t and shouldn’t be here but will be thru next year unless a felony is uncovered or a major NCAA violation.

I think you underestimate how many want to play for Texas vs how many want to play for Herman and his staff

Also, depends on who we hire. If we get a top tier coach, I doubt we would have too many decommitments.

I was answering based on the notion of firing Herman today. There's not nearly enough time to hire the replacement in advance of NSD1. Guess guys that planned to sign that day could push it to NSD2 in that event.

Not sure anything matters anymore at this point until there is a replacement for the HC, whether that’s measured in months or years is up to the folks that pay the bills, the BMDs.

We have seen what he can , can’t, and won’t do, in addition to the trash on the field .

if randomly we win, great , but no more expectations or hopes for anything until this faux HC leaves the 40 Acres.

I skimmed. OU has had 13 over that period of time, Ohio State I think was six, A&M 14, Baylor 13.

So it seems to me that doing it 21 times means you're dicking around in games you should be winning by 10+

You can still see the boob thing as well, sort of.  Okay, it's not the same.

But I can also provide pics of gold teeth, baseball bat wielding, sledgehammer, urine color chart and other cute things if you're interested / it if helps.   We're also just trying to help each other cope so happy to comply.

Any and all distractions help at this point.  Show me your delicious food porn, funny videos of people hurting themselves, all that shit.  Just....make the football season and our government stop.

I'm going to assume we finish out 6-6....we MAY beat Tech but I'm not betting on it.......but I have a good idea that Sankey does his best to schedule the aggys against us in the Bowl game....I would if I was him.......we are down, it's the aggys best chance to beat us in awhile, and the ratings would be unbelievable.  IF all that comes to play and we lose in the Bowl, would THAT be enough to get rid of our arrogant prick of a HC?

All this fire Herman is just horseshit, imo. Yeah, the horns haven't looked great the past few games. It takes work. Maybe Tom ultimately isn't the guy, maybe he is.

You know, all this "stop masturbating with Vise Grips" is horseshit.  Yeah, your penis is a bloody stump, but it takes work.  Maybe it ultimately is a bad idea, maybe not.

Just now Stugotz on his weekend observation segment;

”someone, anyone...tell me how Tom Herman still has a job”

He still has a job because it would cost the university a fortune to fire him. Also because it’s stupid to fire a coach mid-season.

Asithappens, he's not the guy. In year 3, Texas is an underdog to both Iowa State and Baylor. Both programs seem closer to getting over the hump with their respective coaches.

(Narrator: He's not the guy.)

At any rate, no way he gets dumped just months after signing a 2-year extension. He's back next season -- hopefully with new coordinators/revamped staff (top-to-bottom). I would *hope* however that next season is his prove-it-or-lose-it campaign.

A few notes:

I spoke with the parents of some starters. The parents and the players really like Herman. It is truly a family atmosphere. They like being here and while there is some in fighting, the reasons are easy to overcome - like corners being upset with the headhunters for missing assignments and not locking up.

A lot of the players (on defense) are second guessing each other. If you are having to worry about your position and covering for another player's missed assignment, you are going to screw up. So, right now there is too much second guessing on defense.

Personally, I don't like the fact that we get no pressure from our defensive front and force our defensive backs to cover for too long. Then, we blitz from random positions rather than using a B Backer built for rushing. And, in the process give up long plays to uncovered players. Basically, we take too much risk with too little return and we run a system that is pretty complicated for younger players.

For me, this means that Herman needs a new DC. Orlando is his man, though, so it may be difficult. I can see the case for keeping Orlando another year to determine if this year was an anomaly. After all, we have had a ton of injuries in the defensive backfield and we really miss G. Johnson. However, considering the amount of returning starters, I really think Herman should cut his losses and not risk his job due to problems with coordinators/position coaches.

Todd Orlando would push aggy's antiquated offense's shit in. Shutting down pro-style offenses are the only kind he can shut down.

Which 9.95er shared this? or is this a classic tree fitty take?

If Herman went out and hired two elite coordinators, I could talk myself into getting excited for next season, even if I still wouldn't believe in Herman as the head guy. Sadly, Herman is way more arrogant and prideful than coaches like Dabo and Coach O, and I can't see him actually admitting the weight of his staffing mistakes--even if only to himself--and making sweeping changes.  That may ultimately be for the better of the program if it gets Herman out of here quicker and a better coach in, but it's not like Texas has been great at identifying good coaching candidates, and I'd hate to see UT waste Sam's junior and senior years.

So I guess I'll have to hope that his brief moment of clarity in demoting Warehime and hiring Hand after 2017 can repeat itself tenfold  (err I guess sevenfold or eightfold?) this off-season.

I'm a long-time follower of Westlake football. Each week, playing with HS kids, Lake Travis and Westlake somehow manage to field better coached teams than UT that progressively improve as the season goes on. The offenses are more dynamic, and the players are far more disciplined, and they get better.  True, they are playing inferior competition, but if we flipped the coaching staffs,  I have no doubt that UT would get better and Westlake/LT would get worse.

Why?  We only ran 1:01 off the clock and forced Iowa State to call 1 of their 2 timeouts as it was.  Iowa State wasn't going to run out of time before scoring.  If anything they would have scored too soon if not for us jumping offside on the fg attempt.  If we were going to give up on killing the final 4:01 when we got the ball back, we should have just punted on 1st down to give Sam even more time to lead the game winning drive.
