Captain Marvel (aka, the appetizer before Infinity War 2)

I liked it. I picked out the head Skrull actor as soon as I heard his voice. Had some light humor similar to latest Thor and Galaxy Guys. 90s setting was fun also.

Alamo had a good preview thing they do before a movie when you get in early before trailers. It had videos of a narrator explaining the history of Capt Marvel and all the versions.

No nudity but I was Brie would show those tig ol bitties.

So the nerds will bitch and the average Marvel fan will enjoy it. Sounds about right.

This is probably it exactly but with merit.  It's not a great Marvel movie.... it's Marvelously mediocre.  It's probably a little better than mediocre but this isn't going to be confused with one of the stronger outings.  For the average movie goer who just wants to see cool CGI and stuff blow up, they'll be entertained because it was that, decently entertaining.  But for those that follow the the universe or have deeper interest in the source material, this was probably a mildly disappointing outing.  The story as backstory is fairly on point and interesting as its a connector for the Kree/Skrull arc.  And the usual beats are present.  Hero's journey.  Some comedic attempts.  Visually stunning CGI.  But it also played the Marvel playbook in a bad way....

Spoiler

A big name actor who will eventually turn into the baddie.  Seeing Jude Law as the mentor turned enemy was so transparent and seen from a mile away.  Nic Fury's eye wound was beyond stupid.  Playing loose and fast with the character of Mar Vell is going to incite some of the true nerds.

It simply wasn't a very tight movie.  Larson does her best and she has the sarcastic looks down pat, but her comedic timing isn't very good in this and overall she was meh.  The first half is pretty groan worthy in terms of cinematic coincidences and I thought the ending was shrug worthy.  Is that it?  Again, some good action scenes, enough story comedy to have a few laughs, and it's pretty light and breezy.  It's not outlandishly silly like Aquaman or unnecessarily dull like X-men Apocolapyse but this isn't an ambitious film.  It basically is a connect the Marvel dots for the next stage and an obvious attempt to get some girl power in the universe going.  When people say it's in the Ant-man/Wasp category, I get it.  It may be a tad below for me but this isn't going to piss anyone off.  It's a nice safe hero flick with is entirely forgettable.  However, I do wonder if Marvel is going to have some issues going forward.  A ton of charisma is checking out with some of the OGs and although you still have some fantastic actors like Cumberbatch, Holland, Johansson (who is sticking around) and Rudd.  There's some pretty dull ones too.  This one is more the latter....

Yeah, nothing personal against joeycovers, I've just never understood the common position that sex is bad and murderous violence is okay for kids to watch. We all should hope that someday our kids have fulfilling intimate relationships and also hope they are absolutely never involved in the murder of a human being. So why do so many people prefer their kids to watch the thing they never want them to experience? Makes no sense.

I'll get off the soapbox now. Going to see this movie early Sunday to save money. Has to be done when IW2 is coming up and it's expensive as hell when you've got 5 people to pay for.

Or Thanos choking Loki to death complete with throat crushing. But oh no, there might be sex!!! Has any Marvel movie even had a sex scene/implied sex scene outside of Iron Man?

My 6 year old daughter looked over at me after Gamora got tossed odd the cliff by Thanos and asked “Daddy are you going to do that to me?”

Me - Probably not. Did you clean your room?

Im going to go by myself a father of the year coffee mug.

My 9 and 5 year old are dying to see it.. Just making sure no intimate scenes or anything. They saw Infinity War.

Intimate scenes are a no go but slamming an old lady's head into a metal pole is all good? Interesting.

Does watching violence excite you? If so, you're probably a psychopath.
Does watching porn turn you on? If so, you're normal.

Humans react very differently to scenes of violence and scenes of human intimacy. There's been science done about it.

Because I can explain that they are superheroes and it’s make believe. Not trying to have the birds and bees convo with them.

Its not like I take them to see the John Wick trilogy

Holy shit.

Within hours of Captain Marvel’s release, an orchestrated troll campaign went into action. Tens of thousands of negative reviews, largely from people who almost certainly hadn’t seen the movie, flooded Rotten Tomatoes, tanking the aggregate score of the newest MCU entry. That this was an obvious bad-faith trolling tactic is clear from the numbers: As ComicBook.com notes, in less than 12 hours, the site had racked up almost 60,000 reviews for Captain Marvel—compare that to the 53,000 reviews given to Avengers: Infinity War over the entirety of its theatrical run, and it was immediately apparent this was a troll-led bombing campaign. The site has already purged roughly 54,000 phony reviews, and presumably that process will continue for some time.

Backlash, I assume..... from RT's "new" scoring system, to Larsons' comments, to people wanting to bash Marvel.  Pretty silly waste of time.  I was wondering what was going on.  I checked and it was like at 32%.  It's up to around 50 and I assume will continue to get up into the 60's.  79% for critics now.  IMDB's audience score has it about 6.7 for whatever that's worth.  Metacritic about the same.  It's coming in on the low end of the Marvel MCU.

All of this.  I didn't like what they did with  Mar Vell, but can look past it.

It was entertaining, but certainly not amongst the best Marvel Movies...probably not close to WW, which is what it's being compared to.  Definitely worth the watch, especially if your into these movies.

Family Watching Movie White-Knuckles It Through Unexpected Sex Scene

The family was last seen letting out deep sighs of relief as the depiction of intimacy was interrupted by a barrage of gunfire and the film’s villains crashing through the bedroom window, mercifully returning the story to a scene of graphic violence.

Yeah, some of you neckbeards are out in full force.  Good grief.  You want to know how I ranked it?  Fuck you, that's where I ranked it.

Nerd here.  Very good movie.  Vis effects were stunning.  Theb90s songs were a good choice as well.  Enjoyed seeing the curtain pulled back a bit more on the Skrull & Kree, but I'm a sucker for the cosmic stuff.  Kree can be equally deceptive and corrupt as the Skrulls for sure.  That irony is pounded on over and over in the comics.  And I still enjoyed the twist in the story.

Heavy-handed prequels come in the form of Phantom Menace and The Hobbit.  This was not, so you're wrong about that.

Goose was great.  I'm wondering now if that's why my cat hacks up its food on a daily basis.

Daughter really loved the movie, and I felt they did the female superhero coming into her own the right way.  It may not have been the way everyone was expecting, but I'm not so sure it could have been done any differently without screwing it up.

Predictability?  News flash, all stories have already been told in the general sense.  If it's true that there's supposed to be a "greater" struggle in Endgame, then Marvel is doing a great job disguising the foreshadowing.

I will be buying this movie for sure.

It was okay.     I thought the 90s songs and the 90s winks were cute the first couple of times, and full eye rolling when No Doubt's Just a girl came on.

Def bottom 1/2 of MCU.   Probably bottom 1/4.   Thor 2 the only one i would say is def worse.   Its IM2 and 3 level without the RDJ charm.

I liked the cat.

It will be fine for girls that want to see a badass chick on screen.   Or better yet, have them watch Buffy the tv series.  It did all the chick power stuff much better.

I thought she was funny enough for someone who spent 6 years superseding her emotions. Fury was a good tandem to make her funnier.

Goose fucking rules obviously.

Thor + CM + Quake would be pure awesome just saying. Too bad Daisy will never be an Avenger

Actually it was a Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back tie-in.  Fury and Marvel driving around beating up critics of the movie.

Brie Larson and Sam Jackson just left my house. They superwedgied me and shortsheeted my bed.

They said " thatll teach you to badmouth our movie"

The attempts at comedy were not good. I don't think it was all the delivery. I just think it was forced writing. Too much, too soon. Characters meet each other and in seconds are acting like a buddy act? The story was ok, but seemed like it was mostly in service of the Marvel Universe than the character herself. It did make me want to go back and read more about Ronan the Accuser  though. A problem I have with the Super-Hero movies is that eventually comes that hero with powers that seem to be just projected energy (in whatever form), and sooner or later you realize there is no accurate way to gauge just how powerful they are. The writers turn it up or dial it down at whim. Look at the number in Avengers alone now; IronMan, Vision, Scarlet Witch.. now Captain Marvel.

Vision, SW, and CM all get their powers from the Infinity Stones in the cinematic Marvel universe. So their energy is going to be higher than any other including Iron Man. 3 of the 4 couldn’t beat Thanos. CM we’ll see.

So let me guess, the incel "no girls allowed" types who hated it when it was announced still hate it now even if they refuse to watch it. Everyone else who either was excited for it or at least open minded like it just fine. I'm looking forward to it and have heard good things.
