I’ve got a Hispanic friend who went to the Trump rally yesterday.  Coworker of his gave him a $600 ticket.

So out of curiosity I watched a bit of Trumps speech on CSPAN.  I didn’t expect anything different and wasn’t surprised…just constant self-fellating, diatribes against Biden and nothing of actual substance.  No mention of Cruz that I heard though he named about a dozen GOP members in Texas.

No real point here…just have a sick feeling macroeconomic conditions, some brought about by the prior R admin themselves, is going to get that asshat re-elected.

They were on sale like a fireworks stand.  Buy one, get 10 free.

The thing about the COVID conspiracy stuff...step back for a moment and take a look at the folks denying the Apollo landings.  For those moon landings to have been faked, it would have meant that thousands of Americans who would have had direct knowledge that we didn't land on the Moon, would have kept quiet.  Thousands, probably tens of thousands (since a whole shitload of amateurs outside of NASA/aerospace industry were monitoring everything with radios, telescopes, etc.) would have had some inkling that it was faked..  But wait, there's more!  The Soviets would have been able to detect if we did or didn't land on the moon (and probably the Brits, French, Japanese).   The Soviets would have made damn sure that every country in the world was informed that the US tried to fake the Lunar landings.

The COVID conspiracy - the virus, response, masks, vaccines, Fauci, etc....I think that would have been a bigger coverup than the Apollo landings, because the chain of events that it involves would be so much more elaborate, and could have failed at any step (starting with the the virus not being all that deadly, or escaping in the US, etc.), and countries around the world have easy access to the virus.  If we had deliberately fucked around and planted the virus in China, I think China would not only have figured it out, but they, like the Soviets in 1969, would have made damn sure that every country in the world was informed that the US created it and planted it in Wuhan.  And if people in the US created it to get Trump out of office, that means a shitload of people would have direct access and would have to keep their mouths shut, and they'd have to do it in a facility that would leave some kind of trail if it got out or whatever.

But these people want to believe in The Big Lie, because it's comforting to them, because otherwise Trump failed on his own, and given that their identities are tied to Trump, that means they chose a loser, which would reflect poorly on them.

I call these people "Flat Earthers".  It makes them scratch their heads when they say the election was stolen and I retort, "Oh, so you're a flat earther?"

the entire Covid - virus, response, masks, vaccine, Fauci, was all an elaborate plan to steal the 2020 election from trump

The best way to respond to these grandiose conspiracy theories is to remind folks Clinton couldn’t get a blow job in the Oval Office without the whole world finding out. But sure the 2020 election, pizzagate, 9/11 etc… all went off without a hitch.

Michael Berry is great listening.  I have noticed that he and the lunch hour guys (that stupid aggie blogger and some cartoon character) still harp all the time on masks which surprises me given how little salience that issue has left in real life outside of maybe a handful of the more liberal states where these guys have few if any listeners.

Unfortunately your friend is correct.    But you don't have to watch some long movie to understand how the liberal cabel stole this election and handed it to Biden.   I have linked a 6 minutes video which sums it all up if you open your mind.   It's all there man... just look for the signs!

I don’t understand blaming Biden or the federal government in general when gas prices go up.  Are there really red blooded freedom loving Americans that want the federal government to direct private businesses to set prices of their products?  Seems like it’s just good old supply and demand capitalism!

maybe we should have the feds pump their own crude, build their own refineries and the. Be able to sell it to the American people at a reasonable price?

They want the government interfering in private business when it suits them.

A book retailer may be facing a legal fight in Virginia over selling certain young adult books.

According to a Facebook post, Attorney and state delegate Tim Anderson and his client Tommy Altman, a congressional candidate in the district around Virginia Beach, said “the Virginia Beach Circuit Court has found probable cause that the books “Gender Queer” and “A Court of Mist and Fury” are obscene to unrestricted viewing by minors.”

Quote

The post goes on to say that Altman has directed Anderson’s office to “seek a restraining order against Barnes and Noble and Virginia Beach Schools” in order to stop the sale or loaning of these books to minors without parental consent.

“We are in a major fight. Suits like this can be filed all over Virginia. There are dozens of books. Hundreds of schools,” the Facebook post reads.   Bookriot reports that neither of these books contains pornographic material, nor do they fit the definition of obscene.

This is just fucking pandering to the base, but it will take up valuable court time, cost taxpayers money, and will be forgotten after the elections.

It's an election year.  Even when it gets thrown out in court, it'll have served its purpose (and cost the taxpayers money in some way).

For me, the questions are 1) isn’t this already the law? 2) if not, why not? 3) why the close vote?

The difficult thing here, I suppose, is defining gouging.  In the antitrust context, at least, pricing strategy offenses are not regarded as illegal in most cases because they tend to be self defeating.  That is, if pricing is so low as to actually injure competitors, it will injure the predatory pricer first and more gravely; and if prices are exorbitantly high, it will just attract competition and no one will buy. Antitrust is only one area where pricing comes under scrutiny, though, and probably wouldn't apply to most "gouging" cases.

Osteen certainly sucks but I don't get the impression that he is overtly political in his church. At least, no more than we are in my UU church where we work for <gasp> social and racial justice, assistance for undocumented students, climate change, etc. I wouldn't want churches taxes unless super blatantly political. Now the Tennessee dude? Yea, fuck him and his "church".

The Kentuckian had already spoken with President Joe Biden by phone ahead of the trip, telling him that he wanted to blunt former President Donald Trump’s influence by conveying to allies in Eastern Europe that “Republicans still believe NATO is important.”

“My argument to [Biden] was, I want to reinforce with the Europeans after some loose talk during the Trump years about whether NATO is important, that at least at the moment, the most important Republican we currently have in Congress has a different point of view,” McConnell said in an interview in his office Thursday just off the Senate floor, a few hours after the chamber had sent the aid package to Biden’s desk.

Keep connecting those dots, Mitch….you’re almost there on what needs to be done to make the GQP respectable…..
