And I'd bet there is one pharmacy in that small town that filled all 335,000 opiod scripts

oops I just read the entire article - I was way, way off base (there were 2 pharmacies the dispensed over 20 million)

The prescriptions were filled at two Williamson pharmacies just four blocks apart that dispensed some 20.8 million painkillers over a decade.

and even more disturbing

Four days after the feds raided Mountain Medical, Hoover fled to the Bahamas, where she and her husband say they own the 700-acres Little Ragged Island. They planned to turn the island into a clothing-optional resort, though it’s unclear whether they took steps toward building one.

At the time, her medical license was suspended because she had been accused of asking a 17-year-old girl during her first gynecological visit seven years earlier in Philippi, West Virginia, if she or any of her female friends would “have sex with her teenage sons,” according to administrative agency records. She was allowed to continue practicing, but only under the supervision of another doctor.

The whole opioid crisis is a joke. All of the actors trying now to act like innocents.

From the creators of Oxy to the doctors to the pain clinics to the pharmacies and everyone else in the supply chain. Was nothing more than a legalized drug cartel.

And now that the pendulum has swung other way and a ton of previous pill takers have been pushed to the street the industrial prison and police engines are involved.

Making money on the user from addiction to arrest to incarceration.

Just a fucking joke.

Even more disturbing after that picture up there of the two of them.

Redneck hillbillies getting jealous of the dark Mexican cartels having all the fun and money, so they decided to lobby for some lax pharmaceutical regulations and they went and got themselves into the drug trafficking business.  And the best part is not only did they control the supply, they were the dealers, too.  Cut out the middle-man and save!

Why does this sound exactly like the plot of "Ozark" to me?

Well, when you're selling there are 2 ways to make money: sell to the top or sell to the bottom.

Rich people have high expectations and there aren't too many of them.  Requires a high price premium product, and then more work keeping the customer happy after the sale.

Poor folks will take what they can get, and there are a whole lot more of them.  They also lack the means and opportunity to be selective.  This whole situation is predatory.

This.  Big Pharma is in on it, too.  You don't think they didn't know they were shipping YUGE amounts of pills to these small, rural pharmacies?  Nonsense.

Well, see, this one mostly involves white folks, so....yeah.

Yeah, which is why this is a CRISIS. Not a War. Crises require treatment and rehabilitation. Wars require militarized police and mass incarceration.

Truf.

Doctors, pharmacies, drug makers all are fucking guilty as shit and all deserve the worst punishment imaginable.

Side story-

My MIL was at the tipping point, I started taking her to her doctors appointments and realized her two doctors (PCP and specialist) were fucking awful doctors. I switched doctors to those I knew closer to where we live and she is taking about half the pills she once was and has never been in better health then she has been in the last year.

Doctors that are nothing more than glorified drug dealers makes me lose my shit.

Even in logistics, there has to be somebody sitting at a computer saying - Shit there sure are a whole hell of a lot of deliveries to the middle of fucking nowhere.

I'm reminded of a subplot in "Breaking Bad", the big pharma precursor chem company had a hand in the illicit drug business. Here we have people who will be turning to heroin at some point and it would not surprise me in the least to find that someone at PharmaCo has a financial interest in the opium producing countries.

Yep,  a customer service rep with a HS diploma, typing in orders as they're received. Shut the fuck up and type. Do you know how many people there are out there that would kill for this job ?

May have been thinking it.

But I assure you, everyone involved saw this:

...and kept their mouth shut.

Need to be careful here how we define "Big Pharma."  Purdue Pharma, the principal culprit here, sells a whopping four drugs.  Endo, another culprit, is rather a minor player. in the grand landscape of pharma. Janssen, the J&J sub, is truly "Big Pharma" and they have a terrible record with almost all abuses with which pharma can be smeared.

This has been mentioned on the old site, but I highly recommend this book.  Really fascinating, sad and somewhat hopeful at once.

It is a must read for anyone interested in or effected by the opioid crisis.

I may be confusing backwoods hillbilly pharmacies, but I think the 60 minutes episode on big pharma/opioids about a year ago discussed the exact pharmacies in question.

That was the episode that shamed the Trump administration into rescinding Tom Marino's nomination to run the DEA. Congress got a fuckton of money from big pharma to keep the party going.

Here's a link to the transcript/episode

Seems kind of fun? I could play the “teenage son”, but 40 years older.
