Football isn't long for this world

One unintended consequence of football and the opportunity it presents is that it raises a number of kids out of bad situations.

Every year there's probably a half dozen or more kids who say they would probably be dead back in their old neighborhoods if it weren't for football.   Thousands of kids get a free education that will help them for life, and hundreds get to go make real money in the league.

In the over all scheme that's not a lot of people but it would be a shame for that to disappear.

Prayers for this kid

Maybe.

But people were calling for football to be banned a little over a century ago-there were literally multiple deaths every year-before Teddy Roosevelt stepped in to make the game safer.

I expect continued rule changes to protect players, continued serious injuries, because there’s no way to completely eliminate them, and continued occasional calls for its demise.

Also there hasn’t been video produced because based on at least 1 eye witness account there wasn’t a specific play where this happened. Meaning there wasn’t a helmet to helmet hit that resulted in immediate injury.

Currently, just speculation as to what happened. A medical report would probably explain better than watching video of the game

I hear what you are saying....   but there are a lot of other activities that grievously injure more people than footsball....   Like Cheer-leading...  cheer-leading is much more dangerous. /noBartO'Kavanaugh

And we could decide as a society to help a ton of kids out of bad situations that don’t happen to win the genetic lottery and arrive into this world with the body type to effectively help push a leather balloon up and down a 100 yard stretch of ground.

I like football a lot but the helping kids out of poverty defense makes us look like an inept morally deficient society.

Not to mention for many of them it breaks a perpetual poverty cycle that otherwise likely wouldn't be broken. And then their kids are more likely to make something of themselves...and so on.

I’ve always thought it’s weird that as a society we like to sing the praises of sports (including ones now known to have long term health issues) as a way out of the hood, like it’s a good thing society provides.

But if you aren’t physically gifted in ways that please the masses, tough shit for you.

But we’ll still keep patting ourselves on the back for giving some of you the sports way out.

Haha, I am watching girls soccer now...

But hopefully there are newer technical advances that can track the biorythms of athletes deemed in a "health risk", but that means college football would need to have full coverage health insurance on prevention, not just after an injury is found...

A GoFundMe page has been launched by Tennessee State to provide funds for the family of Christion Abercrombie, a Tigers football player who is hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a head injury in a game against Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Members of Abercrombie's family have remained at Vanderbilt University Medical Center since Abercrombie underwent emergency surgery.

The goal for the GoFundMe is $250,000.

Abercrombie is a sophomore middle linebacker from Atlanta. He transferred from Illinois after last season.

Earlier Monday, two other GoFundeMe pages were launched by individuals — Fachon Reed, the sister of TSU coach Rod Reed, and Nashville resident Jake Waddell.

Those accounts were taken down at TSU's request because of a potential violation of NCAA rules. The NCAA also told TSU any other crowd-funding attempts may put Abercrombie's eligibility in jeopardy.

Why is anyone worried about his eligibility?  There isn't a chance in 100,000 that this kid plays again.  Family is gonna need help taking care of his needs and bills.

NCAA needs to show that it has a heart and cares about the young men they are allowing to act as gladiators on Saturdays.

NCAA has it's head up it's ass...again.

Nice racist post you cunt.

It's alarming pieces of shit like you are allowed anywhere near people's kids, much less as a teacher/coach.

I can't go there with you on this one. It is a fucking given that countries in Latin America love and support the sport of soccer. Same for folks in Europe. I don't understand what is considered racist in that post, and I'm not being insensitive.

Fyi.....

In college, women's soccer has a higher rate of concussions than men's football or soccer. Indeed, among college sports, women's soccer has the highest rate of concussions.

In college, women's soccer has a higher rate of concussions than men's football or soccer: 6.3 per 10,000 times women participate in soccer practice or a game versus 4.9 for men's soccer and 6.1 for men's football. Men's wrestling and hockey have even higher rates at 12.4 and 8.4 respectively.

But concussions aren't the only problem. In total injuries, both men's and women's soccer exceed those of men's football. Total injuries for men's soccer are 11.14 per 10,000 practices or games and 9.7 for women's soccer. For football, the number is 9.5.

College sports are about twice as likely as high school sports to result in concussions. At the high school level, the numbers for soccer aren't quite as bad as for football. High school football is the riskiest. But girls' and boys' soccer are still the second and third most dangerous sports for concussions, followed closely by girls' basketball.

There is also data showing that, while football causes a higher number of concussions, girls and boys' high school soccer is responsible for more of the serious concussions. We can tell that from the recovery time. Concussions from soccer are about twice as likely as football to require 22 or more days of recovery.

Most concussions in soccer occur for the same reason that they happen in football - collisions with other players. But in soccer, there is another problem: striking one's head against a hard ball over and over again. In high school, contact with "equipment" (mostly the ball) is about nine times more likely to cause concussions in boys' soccer than in football. Soccer balls are even more dangerous for women.

Unfortunately, soccer players are much less likely than football players to recognize that they have suffered a concussion. So, they are less likely to take the time to rest and get treatment.

........If football is such a scourge, where is the concern over soccer or other sports? Indeed there are a number of sports that are less "safe" than football.
