2018-19 Houston Rockets Thread of running it back (mainly)

You guys know what Chandler means, right?
More length!!1
fuck it.. let's roll with Russ, Harden, Gordon, PJ, and Clint...

against LeBron, AD, Kuzma, and Boogie...

I mean, at least KD is gone east and Klay won't be shooting over every perimeter player until March...

length matters when Harden is your big perimeter defender... and PJ is your small big.

it's not length for the sake of length... Morey did that for years, too... everybody was 6'8" with limited skills...

but to play switch everything against GSW or DEN... or out/in/out or whatever LAL is going to do, somebody has to defend taller players and try to get 6 boards a game... Austin Rivers?

Rumor has it that the Rockets are trying to trade for Robert Covington as part of the CP3/WB trade. They would use the Shump S&T idea floated for iggy, but it would cost considerably less since Shump would only get about 8m in that deal, and even less if there is other salary added. RC's caphit is only 11.3m this year, so it's a doable trade, but it would likely cost another pick or two to make it happen. RC has 3 years 36m left on his deal and he's only 28, so you would get your money's worth out of him. I would absolutely love to get him instead of Iggy, he's a plus defender, and could fill the Ariza sized hole in our roster we had last year.

Damn that would be huge. Covington is definitely one that got away.

Actually, the Shump contract would need to be only 3m to make it work if it's included in the CP3/WB trade, or use some smaller contracts to make it work like Hartenstein+1. The 1.25x 38 million gives about 9m more in available space to use in a trade if they add another contract to that trade, since CP3 and WB are basically the same cost. Hartenstein is non-guaranteed, and they announced the other day that he agreed to push back his guarantee date to later in July. This is presumably to help the Rockets facilitate a trade, or stick with the team if it falls through, otherwise he would likely be cut.

The other part of the rumor is that Minnesoata wants to attach Dieng's 2 years 33m to anyone taking Roco's contract. The Rockets don't have to be the one to take on his deal, but they may have to pay someone to take it. OKC could take it if they send 5m in salary to Minnesota (Patterson works) but they probably don't want to add salary. It would be tricky, but if there's a way to pull that off, the Rockets would be so much better next season. Other option is to include Capela to swap for Dieng. Not sure how bad that would be for us at Center, but this team doesn't really use Capela that much in crunch time, so maybe that would work better. WB/EG/Harden/Roco/Tucker as a small ball lineup would be fun.

Clutch or Dave hardesty is like most fans that overreact to the entire "we have no future" shit. It's like people don't get we have two superstars and if we wanted to hit the restart button we could flip them for a King's ransom of picks, Plus it's the NBA and it is by far the easiest major sport to start over quickly in.

Kinda funny from Clutchfans

The Sports Media:

2017 - Westbrook is amazing, he is better than Harden and he is making history

2017- Harden & Cp3 can never work together - they proceed to win 65 games

2018- OKC is the biggest threat to the warriors, they are better than Houston

2019- Westbrook will not be guarded in the playoffs. Westbrook and Harden can never work together

You know if the Rockets had no history of guys coming and playing better I would understand but I can down a list of guys.

D-Mo- Hasn't done shit since he played for Houston

Green- Career revived in Houston

Faried- Doubled his numbers in this system

CP3- One game away from the finals after hearing it wouldn't "work"

Capella- Developed beyond anything anyone ever thought

Beverly- Developed beyond anything anyone thought

Parsons- Best years were in Houston

So it's not like Morey doesn't have a track record of getting guys that revive their career or getting them to fit in his system so that should help some have a little optimism Westbrook could possibly work out better than we think.

I still don't love the deal but the contracts are basically a wash and WB is younger and easier to flip IF it doesn't work.

Funny thing is, Miami is where CP3 wants to go, and they are willing to take him, but they want their 2 First Round Picks back in the process...

Would be hilarious is OKC had to turn around and give up nearly all of what they got from us to get rid of that contract. To me, that's the best part of this trade, we got out of the CP3 deal without paying much.

Unless you count the 47 million in Westbrook’s last year.

It will still be more desirable over the next 2 years than CP3 would have been. The injury history of CP3 really knocks down his value too, whereas Russ is unlikely to let anything short of an amputation keep him out of a game. Plus Russ sells tickets in a small market, CP3 probably won't. He will be a desirable star next offseason, while CP3 will be looking at retirement.

Pick protections and transfers from the Russ trade:

  • Rockets’ 2024 first-round pick (top-four protected)
    • If this pick falls in its protected range, the Thunder will instead receive Houston’s 2024 and 2025 second-round picks.
  • Rockets’ 2026 first-round pick (top-four protected)
    • If this pick falls in its protected range, the Thunder will instead receive Houston’s 2026 second-round pick and $1MM in cash.
    • While that $1MM is conditional, it technically must count toward the Rockets’ traded-cash limit for the 2019/20 league year
  • The right to swap first-round picks with the Rockets in 2021 (top-four protected)
    • Since the Thunder also own the Heat’s unprotected 2021 first-round pick, Houston will receive the least favorable of those three first-rounders, while the Thunder will receive the two most favorable picks (unless the Rockets’ pick falls in the top four).
  • The right to swap first-round picks with the Rockets in 2025 (top-10 protected)
    • This pick swap was originally reported as top-20 protected, but the protection is actually 1-10, meaning it could still end up being a lottery pick.
    • The Thunder also have the right to swap first-round picks with the Clippers in this draft, so they won’t necessarily swap with Houston even if the Rockets’ pick falls outside the top 10 and is more favorable than Oklahoma City’s pick.

Coming in September. Simmons briefly made fun of this on his podcast with Zach Lowe.
Hopefully he means "Shut up and listen to others" and not "shut up and listen to me."  Could go either way with this guy.
Isn't this the guy that got stock tips from known racist Daniel Figurelli?
